I was skeptic about GM products and how bad Scotty treats them. Now my friend bought a 08 Chevy Tahoe and it’s been a huge mistake, problems everywhere and no sign of getting better.
Hyundai Kia also Notorious for Evap problems incorrect flow so purge solenoid issue, Large leak easiest fix.. fuel cap or also Fuel tank pressure sensor vent valve clogged as Scotty said.
We just replaced that charcoal evap canister in November, on our 2008 Matrix. It can easily be done without taking the wheel off. I was able to fit under the rear of the car and removed the dead canister in 30 minutes, and put the new one in under 20 minutes. The canister with hoses was from my local Toyota dealer for less than $300. And none of the codes came back. Before replacing it, wiping the codes was just a temp fix. The evap codes would come back in a couple weeks.
Toyota made my mom get a new charcoal canister. The engine light came on again so they couldn’t fix it tried to make her pay more and told her she should buy a new Toyota. She did buy a new car 😃 a brand new Honda
Scottie, I've been trying to pass emissions for 6 months. Here ya go, I have a 2004 Ford Freestar SES that I bought from my Mom. Well. I guess the van doesn't like me cause the check engine light came on. I had 2 places tell me there was too many codes to repair without big expense. Soo, I decided to do myself with a friend who has way more experience than me. I'm a 64 yr old female and know some things but not all. Codes were misfires, sensor 2 bank 1. So, changed all plugs, wires, air cleaner. All 4 O2 sensors. Still shows running lean. Change MAS sensor, still lean and sensor 2 again. So, I exchange O2 sensor and replace in case it's faulty. Still getting codes. Get a smog test, leaky screw loose by EGR, fix that and replace upper & lower intake manifolds, lower had small leak. Needed new battery, replaced that, got oil changed. Ignition coil was just recently done 1 yr ago. Engine light still comes back showing me sensor 2 bank 1. I'm at a loss. Don't know what else to do. Any ideas, HELP!
Hi Scotty! I inherited a ‘95 Buick Roadmaster with 70K about 1.5 years ago. It’s my only car and now has 110K. I took it to a reputable local shop for an alignment and found out I need to replace the upper control arms, upper and lower ball joints, inner and outer tie rod ends, plus pitman and idler arms. The service writer was kind enough to show me my car while on the lift and have the mechanic point out what actually needed replacing. While I trust their honesty and transparency, they quoted me $1,700 for parts and labor. Unfortunately, I just don’t have that to spend, so I’m planning on doing the work myself. I just recently started doing work on my own cars and have never worked on suspension components, but I’ve always been fairly mechanically inclined, so I feel confident I could do the work with the right tools and repair guides. Do you think it’s a good idea for me to do this work myself, or do you think I should find a way to pay to have it done? Thanks!
Did I see a plastic engine cover on that Toyota? That I also see a plastic intake manifold on that Toyota? Same things scotty wines about on the bmws, vw’s, MB’s, Audi’s.
That's the PCV hose, which at 2:05 is still attached. if that hose was off it would be a massive vacuum leak, the engine might run, if it did it would idle high and set system lean codes, nothing to do with the evap. Also the vent hose doesn't run to the intake manifold, that's the purge valve. The vent valve vents either to the atmosphere, or into the air filter box. Which is something you're accurate about, people replacing air filters on toyotas and pulling the vent hose off while doing so. Scotty Toyota evap canisters have such a high failure rate that Dorman OE solutions carries them for most all Toyota models the whole way back to 95ish, especially the older models with the rubber diaphragm that deteriorates.
That tyre shake was a common problem on certain Jaguars late 60's, 30 Mph, sideways shake, one of our dealers down under claimed just before he died a few years ago that he was the man who worked out which tyres were right for the job.
Guys let’s appreciate that Scotty is in 110 weather just to record today’s video I live near the guy and boy it’s makes me not even want to pop the hood to finish my wiring
As an auto mechanic(now retired thank god) I used to clear that loose gas cap code all the time. I would never charge for that and I'm sure that unscrupulous shops do. I have a MAC code reader about the size of a credit card that uses global obd that was a no brainer to do just plug it in- no ID push a button light is gone. I had an 86 Suzuki Samurai (new)that had a light that came on the dash that read "emissions". Come to find out that comes on periodically to let you know emissions are "good". There is a slide switch on the column(hidden)that turns it off. What a rip. Dealers were charging for this "repair".
“Vent Can Get Clogged Up With Crud”. So put it right under the back of the car where ALL THE CRUD flys around. GMC trucks!!! Lots of room under the hood but 😾NOOOOO we put them under the box on top of the tank like mine is. You get to pull the box while they save $ .50 a unit on hose. “Oh what a feeling”🥴
I will say you seem to do a lot of fixing up on your Toyota. 17 years, 300k miles later my Buick Rendezvous still runs like a charm and never gave and issue. Just basic maintenance.
Hey Scotty and everyone else, I have a 98 Camry and about four days ago I got in and tried to turn my car on. But the key wouldn’t budge. It just went into accessory and no further. The steering wheel wasn’t locked until I tried to “unlock” it because I thought the steering column was locked up. So I don’t really know what to do, tried again yesterday with no luck. Thanks everyone
Thank You for sharing your experience and knowledge with us ! You will never know how many you have helped over the years - many more than you realize.🌞
I had an evap code on my 2008 Toyota and the part was almost $600.00 and the gas tank had to be removed to replace it. It lasted one day. I traded the car after that since I didn't want costly repairs every time that inspection came due.
Funny, always trash talking Chevrolet.. When I had an '09 Silverado 5.3l 4x4 (purchased with 60k miles) it had an evap vent go bad anytime I topped off the gas too much but the part was like $29 in LMC truck catalog. Eventually I just bypassed the stupid vent and never had another problem. Put 280k miles on that truck, that was the only issue it really gave me. Changed oil every 10k miles using 5qts royal purple and 1qt synthetic Lucas, proactively changed water pump at 125kmiles then again at 250k.
Good day Scotty. I LOVE your channel and I love your advice that you provide. You're a gem. I wanted to bring to your attention something I ran into up here in Canada. I bought a Toyota Venza in 2010 and I absolutely adore that vehicle, it is so sturdy and well built and that is why I was surprised that I had to endure 8 years, yes EIGHT YEARS of speed wobbles on my car. A long story short, I bought a winter tire package direct from the Toyota dealership I dealt with and as it turned out, they put rims and tires on my vehicle that did not match the OEM specs of 114.3, they jammed on 115.0. This is what caused me to have balance issues for over 8 years as well as the requirement to replace both front bearings
Cheers to the 1994 Celica. It never gets old. He really dislikes General Motors. I got a 2020 orange Camaro. I think it's a cool ride. It's 2.0 turbo. It's light weight though.
My '02 Toyota Echo threw a P0440. I could not for the life of me figure out what was doing it. 1) Replaced Fuel Cap w/ OEM. common fix. Nada. 2) Did a smoke test. Smoke was leaking from filler neck. Changed that. Nada. 3) Replaced Vapor Canister!!! $$$. Check Engine Light came back after a month. 4) Decided Purge Solenoid was final solution. Ordered aftermarket $70 shipped. Realized hose connecting Solenoid had tear. CHECK YOUR HOSES!!!
I had this code on my old car. The only inconvenience I had was a few times it took me 2/3 times longer to pump fuel due to it not venting properly. I left the code on a week or so later it somehow corrected itself, cleared the CEL and I was able to pump gas normally again.
Scotty great channel, but another issue jacking up cars it is NOT as easy as it used to be. I dented my VW bug 2003 trying to Jack it at the dot with my floor Jack.
got a 90s civic, staring to make noise during braking and driving, + since the muffler fell off, 300,000 miles, the thing stutters when changing gears, auto trans by the way
Take a picture first... lol.. gotta love the simplicity of it and how overworked some today seem to make it out to be. Of course I'm not in no 94 celica either... just another one of your favorite German wallet carousel or whatever the bimmers are being called these days..
The only reason Scotty holds on to that old Celica is cuz he's sentimental and cheap... and wants to let everybody know it's OK to have an old but reliable car. When he and I was were young low-tech cars was how us working class were able to afford to go to college or at pay for our kids to go.
Scotty, my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup short-bed 4 cylinder leaked some oil from the rack and pinion. Now I get an intermittent high speed vibration at 60 mph. Got new tires & balancing the problem persists....intermittently. Worry? Don’t worry?
This trend is stupid and wastes your money Thumbnail: having a gas tank wastes your money. You have the keep buying gas for your car. How awful and money hoggin
Friend's jeep was throwing codes and running odd and getting crap(pier) mileage... I found a small hose had come off the air filter housing and went into the fan belt and got chewed up.... I also found a wasp's nest inside the air filter housing... where the air filter was installed upside down. Whole thing was full of road dust... how that didn't end up wrecking the engine I have no idea. At least the housing pops out easy enough to clean it out. Made sure it was bone dry before putting it back in. Runs a lot smoother now.
When I bought a used 2000 Elantra Wagon in 2008, the check engine was lit, and it read that same code (P0446). I drove it for 7 years that way without EVER finding what was wrong ! Here in Quebec city, with all the salt in the winter, one of the 3 fuel lines underneath had already been spliced before, probably rusted-through. All those lines had plastic sheaths covering their entire lengths. In 2015, I found that another fuel line was heavily rusted-through UNDERNEATH the sheath. It also had been a few years that the car smelled like fuel, without leaks. I had a mechanic replace all 3 fuel lines underneath. Later, after some thought, I assumed that the P0446 code may have been there due to the fuel evap line leading to the canister being probably rusted-through since a while, creating a vapor recovery leak. Maybe that was my problem all those years I owned the car ! I exchanged that car a few months after that repair job, since the idle suddenly became rough and the car had a new code for Fuel too lean (can't remember the code). I wonder if the mechanic had mistakenly swapped the 3 lines, creating that new problem !
smokedm420 Spiders don’t chew through wires and cause significant damage, but rats do 😳. Varmits is a word used in East Texas. My husband used that word constantly. He was from near Tyler. Scottie is such a great character - I love his hand gestures, vocabulary, mannerisms. Wit & wisdom!
Spiders are indeed attracted to vapors. There was a recall on my Kizashi that had a fault with the evap vent hose in that spiders could crawl in and build as nest, which could clog the hose, causing a negative pressure in my gas tank resulting in cracking the plastic tank. Turns out a cracked gas tank is enough of a concern to warrant a safety recall 😂
I’ve lived in TX my entire life and I haven’t seen or heard that spiders are attracted to automotive vapors before - very interesting (and horrifying!!!... just sayin’). I also didn’t know about their attraction to specific foam products used by Ford & Toyota. I’ve owned several Fords and not noticed. Yikes! I can attest to rats making their homes in the underside of vehicles, chewing wires, insulation materials, and plastics & causing great damage in a short amount of time (not my car but family members & a friends car).
Yo Scotty about those minivans... ive got a toyota sienna.. bought it with 150k on the odo and i have put 52 thousand miles on it since i bought it. I have had to make no repairs. I think you're onto something about toyota being an incredible manufacturer. Thanks for your vids.
Solar charging is good if you're going to leave any car sitting for weeks or months, they might consider renting these out at airport parking lots or such so you don't come back to a dead battery.
Another great vid! Man I appreciate all your advice. Your channel is so useful to so many. I am thinking of buying a car and I wish I could take you with me when I go car shopping, I’m sure you hear that a lot! Thank you for all your great vids. 👍👍👍👍👍
The solar car cover will 'work' for at least 100,000 days in Britain - they don't get much sun, so it takes longer for the UV rays to decompose the fabric... :)
Scotty, speaking of rubbing, would you want to talk about repairing wire harnesses with worn off insulation? A lot of mid 2000's cars had weird wire harness clips made of shotty quality and regularly snap off. It'd be great to get some advice on repairing these wires and adding appropriate friction tape.
Cost me like $75 just to change the canister purge valve on my moms car. (was a different car) but could not get it smogged until I changed it. Be aware if you clear the code then try to get a smog with out fixing the part, California will fail it cuz it does not have enough data to read.
Man your awesome, just started watching your videos... What is the best way to reduce valve clearance on a bucket shim engine? Get new shims" impossible to find the correct size", grind the valve seat lower or use a flat metal peace under the shim or bucket?
I would love to hear your opinion on the 86 Renault Alliance 1.7. I loved that car and drove it cross country. Unfortunately it blew up when it sprung a quick radiator leak.

This is what caused me to have balance issues for over 8 years as well as the requirement to replace both front bearings
Thank you for the emission code tips.
6:15. Out of balance wheels or out of round tires.
Not changing transmission fluid at 58k on a 05 Grand Marquis. Thank you Scotty.
rev up my engine uncle scotty 🕺🕺🕺🕺
CHECK YOUR HOSES!!!
i used to have a 2000 Volvo C70 and i got the EVAP code. it was a rubber elbow that dry rotted and cracked all over
I had this code on my old car.
Scotty's bookshelves got messy again! ;)
Like the new video layout
Scotty, my 2008 Toyota Tacoma pickup short-bed 4 cylinder leaked some oil from the rack and pinion. Now I get an intermittent high speed vibration at 60 mph. Got new tires & balancing the problem persists....intermittently. Worry? Don’t worry?
This trend is stupid and wastes your money
Thumbnail: having a gas tank wastes your money. You have the keep buying gas for your car. How awful and money hoggin
WigWoo1 good profile picture
Friend's jeep was throwing codes and running odd and getting crap(pier) mileage... I found a small hose had come off the air filter housing and went into the fan belt and got chewed up.... I also found a wasp's nest inside the air filter housing... where the air filter was installed upside down. Whole thing was full of road dust... how that didn't end up wrecking the engine I have no idea. At least the housing pops out easy enough to clean it out. Made sure it was bone dry before putting it back in. Runs a lot smoother now.
Have any luck catching the codes. Mine doesn't throw them like that.
“Varmits can get in there, they are attracted to the gasoline vapors for some odd reason...”
"Spiders can get in there.....". Took me a few replays to understand.
smokedm420 Spiders don’t chew through wires and cause significant damage, but rats do 😳.
Eco friendly foam. Made from soy. To rats that smells like food. Toyota and Ford are notorious for using that eco friendly foam
Did anyone notice the shelf changing gradually?
My rooftop hvac units brass condenser pipes developed a hole from bad routing rubbing being too close.
Yeah use a jackstand because that's a Harbor Freight jack!
Solar charging is good if you're going to leave any car sitting for weeks or months, they might consider renting these out at airport parking lots or such so you don't come back to a dead battery.
How reliable would a 95 Lincoln town car be with between 50 and 100k miles that's been very well maintained?
Matthew Wood as reliable as a Toyota
Another great vid! Man I appreciate all your advice. Your channel is so useful to so many. I am thinking of buying a car and I wish I could take you with me when I go car shopping, I’m sure you hear that a lot! Thank you for all your great vids. 👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you Scotty please do a video about the pains of compact cars.
Very good content as always Scotty. Thank you. Nice to see the old school intro again. Always enjoyed seeing it.
On a 4 runner to replace about 1200 bucks! Solenoid and all and light still on!
If a wheel wobbles on front check to see it's not distorted if it is it could fail surprisingly lot of out of balance tyres are not actually round
The solar car cover will 'work' for at least 100,000 days in Britain - they don't get much sun, so it takes longer for the UV rays to decompose the fabric... :)
I noticed that on the Toyota, it's the "cover". On every other car, it's the "stupid beauty cover". LOL!
Best channel ever! 👍😁
Amazing Toyota design 💯
weird, when removing the engine cover, you did not say stupid beauty cover 😂😂😂😂😂
The Engine Beauty Cover Counsel must have found him.
😂😂😂😂👀👀
In sure he wouldve said something about the cracked insulation being from the mfg using cheap materials if it was another car brand
Cracks me up when neighbors buy a new car and park it in the desert sun because their garage is full of worthless crap.
Cost me like $75 just to change the canister purge valve on my moms car. (was a different car) but could not get it smogged until I changed it. Be aware if you clear the code then try to get a smog with out fixing the part, California will fail it cuz it does not have enough data to read.
You forgot to mention that you can trace the entire Evap system hoses from the diagram that is on the Emissions sticker that is under the hood.
Man your awesome, just started watching your videos... What is the best way to reduce valve clearance on a bucket shim engine? Get new shims" impossible to find the correct size", grind the valve seat lower or use a flat metal peace under the shim or bucket?
Always fun when it's slippery and wet 😂
Just a man doing what he loves. Reminds me of Johnny Dee in a weird way.
Found a used 2016 Ford Fusion with 132k miles for $5,500... good deal or bad deal, how would I know 😱🙁
As Scotty always says, have the car checked out by a good mechanic first.
I would love to hear your opinion on the 86 Renault Alliance 1.7. I loved that car and drove it cross country. Unfortunately it blew up when it sprung a quick radiator leak.
The engine needs some cleaning...
Real English Scotty would say it doesn’t matter lol
Hate the evap lol always the issue around here we have a lot of gravel roads
