“If they were a little more talented as a group they could be something” In Australia and New Zealand they are something. They are a great comedy band. Also that song at the end, birdplane, that is one of their songs
I found this song a long time ago. It’s great! Unfortunately, I only found two great songs by these guys, from around the same time. The other song is ‘How To Write A Love Song’. I think you will enjoy it equally or more: ruclips.net/video/L2cfxv8Pq-Q/видео.htmlsi=ufbExVM3EYt4BMEi
There is a video of them doing this song at a concert. In the intro, Benny says to Jordan, "They [the audience] know all about this. Why don't you?" and Jordan answers "I am feigning ignorance to maintain a comedic conceit."
The reason "Canvas Bags" gets such a big laugh is because Tim Minchin had just been on stage and performed it - they dropped it in at the last minute as an extra joke. There are also many different versions of this song that they do - as you say, they could go on for hours.
They're from Australia playing at the Melbourne Comedy Festival (also in Australia) so there's quite a few Australian songs in there that might not be as widely known internationally
As an Aussie that saw this years ago..I am just so proud of this act! -And just love it when I see someone (especially foreigners) see it for the first time. They not only got the base joke of the whole act down, but they build something creative and completely engaging in every single verse...practically every line ups the ante. From Jolly Swagman to C'mon Barbie, to Canvas Bags...and Canvas Bags was hard to top considering Minchin had only just played it on stage...but the finale ,"Now doesn't that sound familiar?"...and the final stroke of genius, "That's all it takes to be a star." Just so, so well put together. P.S. I've seen a lot of versions, and almost always noone catches the first joke before the song , "we've been a band for close to 40yrs now...". (they're each about 30!). I've even heard them ramp it up to 50, and it still goes over everyone's head!
The shtick for the axis of awesome is based on benny being the best singer and also the most forgotten. Along with the left guy being a terrible singer.
Important context for sure (really also quite unsure whether or not she knew this). But to be fair it's also rather irrelevant if the sole point of this video is reacting to their vocal skills :)
I always saw it as Benny being the brains of the operation, Jordan being probably the more conventional singer/rock musician, and Lee just being there for comedic relief. Although you can argue that Benny is probably a better singer than Jordan too.
@@drewdavis2392 I found it hilarious that "Birdplane" was the one that got her to go "Pitch, though, middle guy. Pitch". I'm curious how she would have reacted if she knew that one was actually their own song.
The thing to keep in mind about Axis of Awesome is that they are "comedians who use music" rather than "musicians who use comedy." Benny -- the piano player -- is the only actual musician in the group, the others being actors/comedians who have some musical talent. Lee -- the guy with the guitar who you wondered what he was doing -- is actually their primary songwriter. Benny, by the way, has a series of solo videos where he examines "the other four chords."
It's a "cookie cutter" because those chords sound really good together in that order. It's the first four chords of Pachebel's Canon (D A Bm G), so it's quite old, too.
@@drewmiller335 Good but at this point boring. After i was taught about modulations and how they work i haven't listened music the same. My guitar teacher basically ruined simple harmonies for me but i don't blame him.
If you want complex chord changes, listen to jazz. Pop music is meant to be easily digested. Using a simple chord progression that sounds good just makes sense in context.
What was crazy for me was that even an old folk song like Waltzing Matilda works. Also, as a rule, if there are Aussies it's best to expect swearing. We do it a lot.
It's not an Australian thing, as it might be said. Don't make us Aussies known for swearing all the time I think you're wrong there, because I'm a typical Aussie and know where it's appropriate to swear.
Axis of Awesome is a comedy band, they are somewhat meant to sound kinda 'bad' that's the tall guys bit he is meant to sing bad. It's made funnier when he is given songs that are hard generally to sing "if i were a boy" is high af
This admittedly isn't Jordan's best performance, imo - I don't know if they worked with a voice coach later, but they got a lot tighter as a group as time went on. Lee (the one with the guitar) can't really sing, so they play that up for comic effect (they also act as tho he's very dim, but as he's their tech person -among other things- I'm pretty sure that''s also just for comic effect). I love AoA & really hope they start touring again someday! I adore their songs 'I Love Being A Cow' (it's a Christmas song! lol), '1 in 3', & 'The Glorious Epic of 3 Guys Who Are Awesome'; honorable mention goes to 'We Are So Young'! Check them out sometime!
Exactly what I was thinking. Their intention was to be humorous, and they nailed it. They don't all need to have pitch perfect angelic voices to entertain
Love this channel !!! The Melbourne comedy festival does give a warning to good folks who might be offended by swearing Some of the audience in Melbourne are somewhat bohemian and alternative These guys are more of a comedy act that can sing.
I'm sure Sara wont see this, and even if she does, she probably wont pick the band since they're not what most of her viewers would normally listen to, but hear me out: Beast In Black. The singer has an amazing vocal range. Absolutely nuts! You can go listen to their first single "Blind & Frozen" either recorded or live version, and hear what I'm talking about. I have never heard another male with a similar vocal range, it's insane.
I preferred your previous setting for the sound. In this new one it sounds like the audio is captured much farther from you and we can hear the room echo, which gives it a cheaper feel.
OMG I agree with you SO MUCH about the 'shame' that all the big hits are these simple repeated chord progressions with minor variations. Unfortunately the reason it works is it gives a subconscious sense of familiarity that makes new pop songs already feel warm and nice and thus can also easily become hits. It's all about making money at the end of the day. Absolutely adore you, you're amazing and I wish I could take lessons because you sing so beautifully and me so terribly!
My Senior year of HS, my band directors showed my class this song and it was extremely eye opening and absolutely hilarious! I went on to study composition in college and it's insane how widely used those 4 chords really are used!
You should watch their "How to Write a Love Song" video if you haven't already. You'll never listen to 90's R&B the same way again. Also watch a couple of Benny Davis's solo songs: "Stay at Home Dad" and "Lonely Girl" are amazing.

Don't know what the guy on the left is doing? You mean Lee? He's providing the funniest parts, that's what! It's just that you weren't paying enough attention! You were also talking over a couple of his best bits so you completely missed them.
just for the record - the reason waltzing matilda got such a reaction from the audience is that waltzing matilda happens to be aussie's unofficial anthem lol
Time for Nightwish "Romanticide" live in Wacken 2013. My tone deaf ears tell it might have other chords than these four. Having Floor singing is a plus. ;)
Meeeeh, you don’t really watch that AoA vid for their vocal performance (although it is one of their best lives on YT). You really just watch them for the concept and the fact that they can sing
Hey I saw you recently reacted to voiceplay and you were very impressed by them. They recently dropped a new song: "oogie boogie song". Their bass, Geoff, takes the lead and is absolutely amazing!
As a player trained in jazz and who listens to metal, I greatly appreciate your wish that the average listener might give songs beyond that chord progression a try. Keep preaching it
I have a question, around 5:29 you comment on the pitch of Jordan (middle) but it's during an original song (Bird Plane) so how do you know what it's meant to sound like? Is it just bc it clashed with the instrumental?
Haha YES! Such a yt classic! When this came out my friends and I in orchestra were always trying to come up with our own fav songs to fit with 4 chords lol! Man good times
I personal think, that the reason we tend to like theese songs with the 4 cords is because, there are som much noise in our daily rutines..., cars, planes, PEOPLE, traffic in general and tv's, music, radio and so on and on and on... We have started to found peace in some minor things..., we can't go BIG in how we hear music, because we are so feed up by noice, talk and so on, so many people can't relate to more than 4 cords in general... We are emposed on the fact, that we are hurting our self, with all the things we want to do..., instead of the things we need to do, therefor we use our limited amount of energy on many things, and therefor we can't get too much envolment in each thing... Just my theory.... 😋🦿🔉🎤🔊🎶🎵🎼 And it has always been like that..., some people like some things better than other..., some like Beethoven, others Bach, or Mozart..., but even then it was the ear..., by time we have been inclined to hear more and more of the same...
They have multiple versions of this and have other ones where they even include music by Pavoratti I believe, as well as many other songs not done here.

Hello Tara, please react to Diana Ankudinova, besides Dimash this Girl blew me away like none .. a good Start would be her rendition of "Wicked Game". Other good Songs she covered on a TV Show were "Rechenka", "Human" and "It's a Man's World" and she was only 15 at these Performances
The middle dude reminds me of that person you know that sings well, but you can't help but think "If only you had some professional teaching, you'd be phenomenal". I don't mean that as an insult either, I love this song and I think both it and Axis of Awesome are...well...awesome!
They DO go on and on and on. Each version they play, they use different songs. Not 100% new songs every time, but they do mix it all up. Also, the big about the bird plane bit was a reference to another original song they've done. Which is why it didn't quite fit.
This exact performance is new to me (despite being in my home city), but I already loved the group and the song. Saw that you were reacting to it, and just thought "Tara's going to love this"
Tara you are absolutely gorgeous; the video was hilarious your reaction even more so. Keep up the good work, this was almost as good as your reaction to Home Frees cover of Man of Constant Sorrow.
One of my best friends did this as her final Music extension performance when we were in grade 12. There's even an updated version with more recent songs though that was 10 years ago now.

Quite a few years before an Australian singer by the name of Jon English did something similar with three of his own hit songs that were, as he put it, the same song written three times. (Or was it four, it was 25 odd years ago) I always wanted to ask Benny if that's where the idea came from.

The best reaction to this song I've seen by far, it's so "sing-alongable" and I love every moment that you sing-along as I do too!
For anyone who doesn't know, the chord progression they were using in this is 1 5 6 4. You can transpose that into any key.
Note that the 6 is minor. If you're playing in C, all notes are "on the white keys". It would be C - G - Am - F

They DO go on and on and on. Each version they play, they use different songs. Not 100% new songs every time, but they do mix it all up.
Also, the big about the bird plane bit was a reference to another original song they've done. Which is why it didn't quite fit.
That's the point. It's to show how many songs use the same chords. Did you miss that
Love the jacket!
You should react to Voice Play's rendition of Oogie Boogie's song from the Nightmare Before Christmas. It's mostly the bass, Geoff, and all awesome.
Tim Lattin *whispers* and this one!
This exact performance is new to me (despite being in my home city), but I already loved the group and the song.
Saw that you were reacting to it, and just thought "Tara's going to love this"
That was really great Tara, I had no idea about the 4 chords, but that's pretty awesome. and I must say, you look fantastic today girl.
Fun review. Just saw the latest release from voiceplay...the oogie boogie song. Geoff on full display. Really fun video.
And this one..
The MOST distracting "Jacket" of ALL time !
By the laser guided gaze of Gort, DAM!!!
Gota admit, she wears it well and it suits her.
Another great song by Axis of Awesome is Elephant in the Room
If she was my teacher I wouldn't be learning lmao. Gorgeous
That was fun to watch you laugh at this. Thank you.
These guys released a extended version, check it out!
Tara you are absolutely gorgeous; the video was hilarious your reaction even more so. Keep up the good work, this was almost as good as your reaction to Home Frees cover of Man of Constant Sorrow.
Beau Dermott is Amanda Holden's golden girl | Week 1 Auditions | Britain’s Got Talent 2016 Defying Gravity is a really good cover!
One of my best friends did this as her final Music extension performance when we were in grade 12. There's even an updated version with more recent songs though that was 10 years ago now.
Love how much you were enjoying the video!
I love this Axis of Awesome video!
vocal coach is stacked!
We love your reaction about Dimash. Please react 'Late Autumn' from 2017 The singer.
Der Typ der bei der GEMA die Titel eintippt, ist ein ganz blöder Penner.
Da arbeiten ja viele, sowohl Frauen, als auch Männer
Sie führen diesen Urheber-Verbund.... :D
@@sansirius3754Und der die Titel eintippt ist ein blöder Hund!
@@sansirius3754 Ist ein Songtitel
@@saemikneu ....ja...was du nicht sagst.
Love your jacket :D
Quite a few years before an Australian singer by the name of Jon English did something similar with three of his own hit songs that were, as he put it, the same song written three times. (Or was it four, it was 25 odd years ago)
I always wanted to ask Benny if that's where the idea came from.
Tara’s look was on point.
Thanks love!
Thanks love!
