Wow. What a great vid! SO much details in it. Thanks for the effort to edit it. I actually work there at DCA as IT Support tech. Good to see vids like this spacially in DCA. I would probably spot pictures at Gravelly Point Yard some time soon. Thanks again!
The windows are double pained so if one cracks, the other is there to keep the pressure and strength. And when they say crack, its not what you think a crack is. The window usually spiders and the whole thing pretty much shatters. Makes a nice loud pop or a shot gun sound as described by my friend.
Did any see the windows on the Delta 320 that battled thru a wild hail storm with smashed to front cockpit Windows so badly you could not see through them, the radar cover had been destroyed. Bound for Salt Lake City it landed in Denver. As bad as the cockpit windows were there able to hold pressure due to the second window holding firm.
+✈ NickFlightX - Aviation at its Max! ✈ I saw this first hand decades ago when as a teenager I was allowed in an L-188 Electra cockpit. Amazingly they were dealing with a shattered left windshield emergency and even then allowed me in the cockpit. It was as you described, a shattered mess of fractures but the other layer held. The emergency procedure for that was to reduce both airspeed and altitude. Even more interestingly, I was allowed to stay in the cockpit and watch the landing from the jumpseat.
Geez- I can't believe the idiots commenting on the shaky camera, seeing how you apologized up front and explained your situation. Thank you for sharing, BTW.
I had this happen to me twice and luckily they both happened, different flights of course, after takeoff and on approach. I personally didn't feel the need to declare an emergency for both times.
I saw an emergency landing for a cracked windshield recently and its not a big deal. I have a friend who used to fly gulfstreams and he had a windshield crack and he flew with that windshield for the rest of the flight and did another flight with that same windshield.
A Delta 747 make an emergency landing at (unoccupied) Midway Island because of a broken windshield. I could never get the details on how the hell they managed to get the PAs and finally the aircraft off the Isle or if the pilots lost their jobs for being overlycautious and subjecting 400 PAs to whatever hazards you might find on an abandoned island. Keep in mind there are windshield cracks and there are windshield cracks, the difference being one layer or both layers thick and the danger of depressuration. A small crack in the top layer isn't a huge issue in an unpressurized piston aircraft.
✈ NickFlightX - Aviation at its Max! ✈ If this is true, I find him very irresponsible and subject passengers to this is subject to him loosing his license. You really don't know much about the rules of flying when you say it was not a big deal.
Bobby Paluga Henderson Field on Sand island (Midway Atoll) is an uncontrolled airfield and maintained as an emergency diversion point for ExTended OPerationS (ETOPS) flights. Delta 277 made a precautionary landing due to a major crack in the windshield and a replacement 747 was dispatched with mechanics/parts to repair the damaged aircraft.
For as far as I know saying ' (callsign) TO (callsign), (messege)" or 'THIS IS (callsign)', so the words 'to' and 'this is', will result in you buying a beer for people. :-)
I thought the same until I noticed a lot of ppl running/walking in front of it. looked and sounded kinda like someone hit it going by.. it jerked pretty hard and far to simply be messing up on the camera angles
Is there no fence between you and that ILS antenna? Seems like a bit of a problem. Also surprised the ops guy went all "I'm taking control of the airfield" for a single plane with the window broken which was operating just fine. Seems excessive.
✈ AviationStation ✈ That's very impressive for such a small camera. I like how it picks up the detail of the wake distortion behind the last jet that landed in the video. Nice work! You probably know already, but All Things Aero (the facebook page) posted this video, and that's how I found your channel.
Jeffrey Lancaster Thank you very much! I have found it to pack an excellent punch while remaining very portable. If only my tripod were more cooperative! I did not know about All Things Aero picking it up, so thanks again for the notification!
***** Airport ops never issues taxi clearances in this video. At 4:07, the tower instructs the aircraft to switch to ground control and at 5:50 the ground controller instructs the aircraft to taxi to the gate.
+Suzanne Gillespie Yep! There's actually a park just north of the airport (off the approach end of 19). It gets pretty busy with cyclists and pedestrians during the daytime.
+BMWM3GTRLOVER it's the same with Most Boeing passenger jets, the last digit is replaced with the version number, so 744, 748, 736 or 739 are all legit identifiers.
Derpy_ ZexyZek Coming from the one who's username is "Derpy_ZexyZek" what kind of fucking language is that. Just because I made a typing error at 2 in the morning on a youtube video doesn't mean I don't know my native language. Fuck off you utter cretin of a specimen.
all of you complaining about the camera work and quality, how about you go film and upload videos to your own standards. stop your complaining every single video. if you can do better, do it
the complainers aren't the ones describing the channel as a tv station featuring non-stop aviation, captured in *smooth*, stunning high definition... one and a half out of three ain't bad
His job is to ensure the runway is clear of debris and you noticed he told tower that the runway was clear and back to his control, so the other planes could land.
Bingo, over reaction+people wanting to get in on the action, paid gawkers. Did you ever wonder why 5 or 6 police cars need to be parked around a minor car accident with no injuries? Paid Gawkers, little kids with badges
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 they are to check the runway if anything such as glass or similar falls off the aircraft and lands on the runway. you can hear him say the runways is clean and he's handing the runway back to tower.
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 Thats the airports main emergency vehicle, or would it make more sense to buy a separate truck just to check that when they already have a vehicle. Fire trucks aren't just Fire trucks, they carrys a full EMS team with tools for medical, mechanical, and most major emergencies.
Just what was the purpose of the "Follow Me" truck? I have to admit I would have loved to see the guy blown up into the air, not too likely unless the big boy is taking off, but just the sight of a passenger vehicle behind jet engines. Having had to unnecessarily use a slide in the middle of a runway because on our aborted take off we blew some tires, illustrates the overblown nature of "emergency response". If an aircraft can taxi to a gate and in the absence of fire, there is ZERO reason to use the slides. However in our reality TV world you never pass up a chance to make a mountain of a molehill.

That must have been pretty frightening! Thanks for the info!

Last aircraft to land was a nice smooth landing. Great video!

Very good coverage of this. Glad it ended safely. Thanks for posting!
Professionalism from start to finish!
Seems like a lot of fun chasing that big airplane with emergency lights on
LOL
Edzi Zayari
Looool
Very cool. Thank you for posting this.
Excellent camera work
Great job filming this could not have been easy. Thanks for a great video.
I had this happen to me twice and luckily they both happened, different flights of course, after takeoff and on approach. I personally didn't feel the need to declare an emergency for both times.
Nice capture.
Great shot
Tnx! Nice job with ATC recording and video!!
aha lol the guy in the emergency vehicle is funny, he's having the best day ever
Good stuff. Nice catch and video! The Ops 2 guy doesn't sound like he's too authoritative in his job.
Nice movie of go around!
Ah heck it can happen, great video just the same!

✈ NickFlightX - Aviation at its Max! ✈ thats pretty irresponsible but the plane has to move I guess..

wow !!!! rare catch !!!!!
Fantastic catch! :)
Tower to OPS 2... OPS2, Go ahead......Tower to OPS2, do you have a glazier on board?

FlyingDutchMan225
I heard that's just a rumor. Over.
+FlyingDutchMan225 why it has 2 be a beer why not a soda ?
nice video
Shame can't keep the camera steady!
I thought the same until I noticed a lot of ppl running/walking in front of it. looked and sounded kinda like someone hit it going by.. it jerked pretty hard and far to simply be messing up on the camera angles
Well, being February in Washington DC, he was probably freezing.
+tjperez69 I'm thinking the jet blast from the engines was shaking the camera
Take out your phone right now, zoom in all the way and try to keep it steady, it is harder than it looks......
He forgot to bring his bipod for the phone to keep it steady
Is there no fence between you and that ILS antenna? Seems like a bit of a problem.
Also surprised the ops guy went all "I'm taking control of the airfield" for a single plane with the window broken which was operating just fine. Seems excessive.
it can be dangerous, if the window broke more it would cause very bad problems
Great video! What kind of camera and lens are you using?
Thanks! The camera is a Sony HDR-CX150.

If now the Writing only would be animated it would totally look like Life is Strange ^-^
Try using a sturdy tripod next time.
Nice Take ! But Am Seeing Double Of Everything Now...
AMAZING Video :D
Awesome !!
Great video! How do you get those scanners? I'm sure they're not cheap!
Never heard of airport ops issuing taxi instructions before. What kind of ATC certification do they have?
***** Airport ops never issues taxi clearances in this video. At 4:07, the tower instructs the aircraft to switch to ground control and at 5:50 the ground controller instructs the aircraft to taxi to the gate.
Is there a bike path on the outskirts of the airport? I noticed several cyclists zipping past you -- nice and flat, I imagine!
+Suzanne Gillespie Yep! There's actually a park just north of the airport (off the approach end of 19). It gets pretty busy with cyclists and pedestrians during the daytime.

30 minutes in and I wonder why the plane didn't fly to an airport in the area or somewhere on the way to chi instead of flying back to origin.....?
Maybe it was the best airport with an American Airlines Maintenance Center. Just a guess though
+Tyler Hayes it was closest maybe. You know to far to return
I thought the flight number was 738, but turns out it's 40 and 738 is your way of saying 737-800 -_-
That is a common way to refer to a 737-800
+BMWM3GTRLOVER it's the same with Most Boeing passenger jets, the last digit is replaced with the version number, so 744, 748, 736 or 739 are all legit identifiers.

A/C registration? Thx.

Why are fire trucks deployed for a cracked windshield? I realise it's a priority landing but hey?
What happened exactly ??? A broken window ??
Essentially, yes. The information in the description contains all I know regarding the incident.
cant see the plane landing becuase the camera topk a dome sort of spasm

Wow

all of you complaining about the camera work and quality, how about you go film and upload videos to your own standards. stop your complaining every single video. if you can do better, do it
P.S. Thanks for uploading and sharing your video. I have no airports near me so I cannot take these videos. low quality or not, it's cool to see
the complainers aren't the ones describing the channel as a tv station featuring non-stop aviation, captured in *smooth*, stunning high definition... one and a half out of three ain't bad
Chase car for a cracked windscreen. He's going to do exactly what?
His job is to ensure the runway is clear of debris and you noticed he told tower that the runway was clear and back to his control, so the other planes could land.
how to get atc?
Lol, I got where the camera man is, often
I know what caused the incident. That livery!! It's killing all the planes :)
Why sister was on that plane she thought led me so I looked it up Thank God it wasn’t worse
i think the guy filming this video is having a seizure.
Thats real nice of you
its really hard to stabilize with that much zoom... try it yourself
That's what tripods are for:)
Richard Lu that was my first thought, too! ^^
LULU KNOWS LP 😄😄😄
Just wonder, just a cracked windshield, why they need fire truck?? Nothing serious unless the windshield is going to break at 20,000 feet
Bingo, over reaction+people wanting to get in on the action, paid gawkers. Did you ever wonder why 5 or 6 police cars need to be parked around a minor car accident with no injuries? Paid Gawkers, little kids with badges
Bobby Paluga 100% agree.
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 they are to check the runway if anything such as glass or similar falls off the aircraft and lands on the runway. you can hear him say the runways is clean and he's handing the runway back to tower.
so they need couple fire trucks to check
LAUNCH CONTROL 東瀛戰神 Thats the airports main emergency vehicle, or would it make more sense to buy a separate truck just to check that when they already have a vehicle. Fire trucks aren't just Fire trucks, they carrys a full EMS team with tools for medical, mechanical, and most major emergencies.
I remember this, I was working ground at the time he landed.

What do you expect him to be like a pro never expect much from these kinds of videos

That's us airways
Yeah, some crack!
hey great vid but a little shaking with the can I subscribe though
Damn, never flying American. Far too many problems with this airline.
+PW Gaming Any aircraft can hit a bird. Any aircraft.
OneSkiWonder And not every aircraft has such poor maintenance that a passenger's window gets cracked:)
PW Gaming The only aircraft that is maintained to perfection is Air Force 1. Commercial airlines as a whole don't sweat the small stuff.
OneSkiWonder lol true, or Virgin America:)
+OneSkiWonder I used to at an Airport couple years aback....bird strikes aren't that uncommon.
А что было то ????)))
who filmed this? Michael J. Fox?!
lol. Try zooming in your camera all the way and keep it steady, it is harder than you think.
terrible camera work. All over the place.
My
Well that was boring
uhhhh
Jesus!! Terrible camera work!!
