i make cottage pie once a month, instead of using a packet of 'mixture' to create the sauce i use a can of oxtail soup with two oxo beef cubes added to thicken it up, it gives the sauce a lovely rich beef taste.

@@happyfeet4506 fry the mince & onion as normal, then add it to a saucepan with the oxtail soup and add the beef stock cubes (and few splashes of Worcester sauce if you enjoy it) crushed to thicken it up. Add to a oblong oven dish (or individual dishes), allow to cool for 5 mins, then add the mashed potatoes and cook for 1/2 hour on 180° (I put it under the grill to brown the top first). Hope you enjoy.

I used to eat the Asda cottage pie regularly as I worked within a mile of Asda so I would walk down and pick one up at lunch once a week but when I moved from that job I started to make my own and haven’t looked back. Home made cottage pie is definitely the way to go. I use a Pyrex dish.

I used to buy cottage pies and lasagna from Iceland for a quid! Not sure if they still make them but they were a bit bigger, and totally spot on!!
I bought a couple of boxes of "shelf stable" ready meals from a company called"Parsley Box" .... 10 different meals for £20. Best thing is they need no refrigeration!! And last about a year! Apocalypse food!!

Quick foodies, get to ASDA and hoover up all this wrongly priced Cottage Pies before ASDA realise they're priced the wrong way round! Superb review Gareth, I sometimes have the ASDA one if I working late with some microwave brussel sprouts. Hi made my Auld Mother a cottage pie just a few weeks ago. Cooked my mince in the slow cooker with Oxo carrot onion and lea and Perrin's sauce for 8 hours. Topped it with Idaho cheesy mash with added butter milk and cheese! My Mum didn't even know it was smash in a blast!

Hi Gareth. A great review of the 3 Cottage Pies.
The one that was more a red colour is how my homemade recipe is because of the tomato paste. What gets my goat is some brands label their product as Shepherds pie, but it contains beef, not lamb... Grrrr 😡. We also have a Sweet Potato cottage pie and it's just an awful tasting Slop. It seems you have a better product there in England.
Cheers Gareth, keep up the good work. 👍😀🇦🇺

@@sue-anneeast9685 I don't know how your mum cooked them, but if baked they are stronger tasting. Whereas if steamed it's a milder flavour. Don't worry, you're not the only person who doesn't like them. I don't like the White variety so much as the Yellow. Thanks for leaving a comment 👍😀

Hi Gareth. This is an intersting review. Strange how Asdas smart price one was more expensive than the Asda regular one. Usually I put chilli sauce on it when I buy these which isnt all that often. Getting the cottage pies out is nearly is impossible, you cannot avoid having to break them a bit. But you've definately highlighted the best and nicest one for the money. Quite a turn up for the books in this review - the regular one was the best. I think I'll include the regular cottage pie in my next delivery which is coming this Monday (Asda is where I shop - online mainly). Cheers for that and Im looking forward to trying it - so lomg as its still in stock. They've normally sold out shortly after you announce its the winner on your channel. Oh by the way, you've said before that you cannot stand to see good food going to waste. Please promsie me they all got all eaten 🙏. Cheers Gareth 👍.

@@CARLOS68 READ my initial comment again...
THE REASON THE 85P ASDA ONE WAS CHEAPER THAN THE CHILLED £1.20 ASDA ONE... IS BECAUSE THE 85P ONE IS FROZEN!!!!!
Again.... The cheaper 85p one from asda is CHEAPER than the other asda one which was £1.20 is because the 85p one WAS FROZEN... and the £1.20 asda one was chilled NOT FROZEN
You're making no sense!!! I buy the asda £1.20 ones... THEY ARE MORE EXPENSIVE THAN THE 85P one because it's not frozen!! Read my comment correctly before replying

......just been reading the reviews on the ASDA Spicy bean burgers..... and glowing, someone does say they're like the old Burger king spicy bean burger.... which were absolutely delicious 😋 I'd definitely recommend making a burger out of them though..... hopefully a better result than the Linda McCartney mozzarella burger!

Yes indeed. One of my favourite meals. Cottage or shepards pie. Only had the tesco and Iceland ones so far though. I eat straight out of the container. Plate if I add some veg or chips. You have the same spautula as me. Used to have a metal one until I ruined a wok with the thing. Scratched off the teflon. Now I have a new wok and silicon spatula. I add some grated cheese on top and some salt and pepper. Tastes even better.

The Tesco and Asda frozen ones would have been made in the same factory, hence the "IE" code in the circle. The Smart Price one would have been made in the UK and was fresh so would be why it was more expensive.

Hopefully no horses were harmed in the making of that stuff. I reflect on public sentiment from that news and still think about three things for the ones that have no issue
    1. They don't know how the horse died.
    2. They don't know if there was anything wrong with the horse.
    3. They don't know what medication the horse may have been consuming and residue left over.
All that info about cattle here is documented.

I agree the Asda Smart price is rather bland. Not beefy.
You need to try the Asda Smart price Chicken curry. For £1.20 it's quite pleasant.

I have tried the tesco one ant to be honest it went in the bin which was a bit of a bummer as it was my lunch at work.
the m&s is ex[pensive at over £3 but is definatley worth the extra which is fine if your not on a budget,

I had Morrison's today (only because I can't walk at the moment)...it was £1 and it was exactly like hospital mince and mash after a tonsils op. i didn't like the mash it was a bit powdery. I ate it with Aldi green beans. It was okay in an emergency and would have been better with grated parmesan before cooking.

Hi Gareth. Did you notice that the Saver pie says "Not suitable for freezing"? Maybe that was why it didn't taste so good. See 2:49

Have to admit I have microwave meals for breakfast in the winter, and I put some grated cheese on the cottage pies.

Morrisons do the 99p Cottage and Shepherd's Pie and they taste great. I tried these along with the 99p Hotpot you reviewed. Instead of cooking from frozen I defrost first and wack them in the air fryer or the microwave if I'm starving. Cheers Gareth. 👍🍻🍺
