Nunavut is the northernmost Canadian territory. Life here is different from elsewhere in Canada and most of the population is still made up of Inuit.

I’m from Nunavut and yes, the suicide rate is so high. I could count 30 people i knew died from suicide. Including my friend who died by suicide in 2012, who i dearly miss everyday 😭😢
Pretty harsh, what do you think is the main reason behind it?
@@GeoPerspective Housing crisis, food insecurity, family loss from suicide, can’t find a job, breakups. Theres lots of different reasons.
No wonder there are no conditions to immigrate to Nunavut you need human being
Sorry to hear that. Are you okay? 🙏🏿🙏🏿🙏🏿

So we are arctic cousins? JK.
Thanks for sharing! Nunavut has always been so interesting to me & I’ve wanted to learn more about life their. Also, your accent is heavenly.
Thank you and thank you :)
Just saw the film Slash/Back which was filmed in Pangnirtung, using the local population as actors in it, and learned how little I know of this huge land mass just north of me. The town of Pangnirtung wasn't discovered by the outside world until 1929. Among other things I didn't know of were that the Inuit/Eskimo people are that far east of Alaska (yeah well obviously lol). Enjoyed learning more about the northern territories from this vid.
And the film Slash/Back, enjoyed it immensely. It's a low budget horror flick with rubber monster suits and bad CGI, but the comradery of the four friends of Inuit girls made it fun. Just zone out and enjoy the adventure.
Pangnirtung was founded as a trading post in 1921 by the HBC, the Inuit were entirely nomadic before relocation by the Canadian government in the 50s and 60s
Also, could you include more photos/videos of the residences and residents?
I found out a few months ago that I have a tiny bit of Inuit. So I have been trying to learn all I can about them. I am in awe of them. Hardy survivors in the most remote and difficult areas in the world. And yet they have done it for generations. I am so proud to know I have a little bit of them in me. Loved your video. Take care.
A person I knew in grade 3 passed away during a blizzard dew to starving because their parents wasn't able to afford food before the blizzard, he was only around the age of 8, after that I notes the rcmp brings food to houses during the holidays, and more people are willing to offer food on Facebook if they see some one asking or offer food if they had leftover food.
Respect from Alaska!
Yeah they have some forms of shelters, housings, finances, ownerships, and kinds of settleings
When I thought about the possibility of moving to Nunavut, I thought Amazon wouldn't ship there at all. But thanks to this video, I learned that Amazon Prime works for Iqaluit. It didn't even work for Hay River, NT when I lived there.
From Cambridge Bay. Amazon does ship up here but be ready to pay for shipping. It takes about 2 weeks for packages to arrive.
There are also many other online shipping options.
A fate comparable to Greenland, Alaska and easternmost Siberia. Inuit and its culture are like an endangered animal species that we will only understand when it is gone. Thank you very much for an honest, heartfelt lecture.👍👍👍
thanks for watching :)
Minus 30 degrees during the year... I won't have Nunavut LOL 🤣 #DadJokes
For the record, it's still -30.
Not during the entire year, but only in winter. In summer the average is 8 degrees, which isn't bad at all.
My name is Qaumariaq Inuqtaqau from Iqaluit. Got a petition called article 23. You will see why Inuit are suffering from discrimination and 7 out of 10 Inuit are hungry been asking are government for help last 8 year petition has 5100 names
Yes, Canada finally!
This is such a great video!! Do you have a list of references/citations about the displacement of families to the islands? I'm really interested in learning more about this and how this displacement may relate to the tb crisis in the 1950s and 1960s.
Thanks :)
Its pretty much just wikepedia, I didn't dig deeper for numbers.
Great video! Steve from Kentucky
thanks for watching
I was up there in Aug 2007 & The Army dropped me off on a tiny island for 6 days. We were resupplied on the 5th day because we ran out of food!
What were you doing there
Corporations should use their shipping fleets to supply northern isolated communities at same prices... as a cost of doing business in the south. They need to make their products available everywhere at similar prices... hook up with the resource industry to wholesale shipping of food up north. Like a company store taking a loss (but it's really subsidized by continuing business in the rest of the country)
There's definitely a lot of potential for them up here. As getting goods up here is expensive, large corporations would definitely have a ton of business if their fleets can do it faster.
I've noticed in videos of the Nunavut supermarkets, that there is a huge amount of soda, fast food and junk food on the shelves. Seems with high prices, people would spend more on necessary food.
I want a trip to watch Toronto raptors! I’m 17 years old, lost 3 best friends already I’m from Nunavut
Thank you for sharing.
We should make this a country,.
@Xaviar 77versus99 Relax
While northern Norway, Sweden or Finland may be in the Arctic they are not barren tundra like the Canadian Arctic. However, as for shipping goods to remote Arctic communities is expensive, so is the transport of people. The cheapest place to go would be Inuvik on the Arctic Ocean as it can be reached by road. By air, the cheapest place to fly to is Iqaliut as their are regular flights of large airplanes from Ottawa by multiple airlines. Going further afield than that is much more expensive as smaller communities are generally served by small prop airplanes; something like the size of a Dash 8. A couple exceptions to this are Cambridge Bay and Resolute; which are centres for research in the Canadian Arctic. Personally I have been to Iqauliut, Arctic Bay, Resolute and a Canadian DND research station on the southeast coast of Devon Island. Their are no permanent settlements on this huge Island. Space agencies have used the interior of the Island to simulate conditions on Mars.

In the first minute you've mispronounced two names already, Iqaluit and Ellesmere.
Is there any mainstream corporate lie that you don't repeat in this video?
Nunavut should be called halfuvit cause that’s what they got
This high speed narration is distracting at minimum. An old saying is "never use 2 words when 1 will do". In that sense, this narrator should listen to David Attenborough. His pacing is impeccable. As well, he knows when to let visuals do the talking.
yeah, I used to rush way too much
@@GeoPerspective ... I'm glad you've reconsidered. After all, I clicked on this video to see what's interesting about Nunavut. I didn't want to leave so quickly

Did you notice the fruit bowl was just under $60.00 dollars! What??! When, in America they cost $12.00 - $14.00
@@Lily_049 yea that’s insane. Gotta save up for a trip there!
@@Lily_049 But I mean, the fruit bowl was over 2 kilos and the salad bowl was over 2 kilos as well. Fruit and vegetables don't grow there, and they expire quickly. Other things aren't usually that much more expensive up there.
Damn, I didn't know anything about this. Awesome video!
50 dollar small salad what if no one buys it and goes bad they just throw it away ..???
Yes.
In the harsh months of January to March where temps are often -40 or lower and the salad HAS TO be flowing in by plane you're lucky to eat good looking produce not touched by frost. Heck, it's only September and our lettuce has looked like crap for the past month and is left out for purchase until it's unfit to eat.
Thanks for adding an honest perspective on the social history of Nunavut, I learned things I didn't know before even though I am Canadian. High quality video.
This was awesome! Thank you!
I live in Resolute!

NEW VIDEO ON NEWFOUNDLAND CANADA:
ruclips.net/video/23U-dVP_gzk/видео.html
Personally, I think the food prices are just right CONSIDERING WHAT THE FOOD HAS TO GO THROUGH TO GET HERE.
And I live here. Yeah, grapes are $30 a kilogram. But those grapes were grown and picked in South Africa. If you can pick me some South African grapes and ship them to me for under $30 I've got a snow Igloo to sell you in Nevada!
Its fair, can't complain about it really
@@GeoPerspective the prices are pretty shocking but a lot of healthy foods are subsidized by the government. I'm originally from Saskatchewan and for most common goods, like bread and milk I only noticed a $1-2 increase over what we paid back in Saskatchewan. Pop and chips are total crazy pants insane, but hey, who needs all that sugar flavoured water anyway!
Thanks for making this video and letting more people know about the Inuit, their culture and the modern problems they face. It's spreading the word that's going to get the wheels in motion to help fix the rampant suicide and housing issues this territory faces.
how are you guys able to afford food since its priced so high?
@@_electricfox your wage is equally higher than your southern counterparts. (Teachers in Nunavut make almost 100,000$ as a NEWB!)
For small family southerners it's a lot of money, but most Inuit live 10+ people per house and maybe only 1 of those people has a well paying job. The others are children, elders or freeloaders.
And then there’s me picking grapes for free in my back yard
Don't you think people in the Arctic would want the temperature to warm up? you said yourself, it's probably due to the harsh conditions
I wonder how many amateur radio operators live there
Thank you for such interesting information about Arctic territory of Canada . Why I want to know about it more ? Because I used to live in such areas and spend all my childhood in the North territories. All the best !
Thanks for watching:D
So the government considers this beautiful place as one of theirs, yet they are not concerned about the people's welfare?? Provinces like Nunavut should be getting more attention than the most established ones that have a productive and functional economy.. I'd be delighted to visit this splendid place ❤
Very informative and interesting, thanks! ....May I just make a small suggestion: could you please speak a little more slowly? Great video, amazing content..... thanks again!
Thanks for the suggestions, I have slowed down in my latest videos! What other regions are you interested in?
i dont understand the food shortage, most places are on the sea, why no fishing? can chicken houses not be built there? i live in south US so there is probably something i am missing.
I spent 2 1/2 years in Arctic Bay Jan 1972 to June 1977. No matter what you say, people can never really understand what it was like. If ice stopped your sealift, you went without. Housing was very poor. Cold yes, but it didn't stop us from a wonderful social life and friendships that lasted decades.
Thank you for reporting on Nunavut.

As an African American I am so intrigued by the Canadian Governments practice of making Public Apologies and recognition of the Government’s responsibility in the Detriment of parts of it’s population. I know an apology doesn’t make up for EVERYTHING but I just wonder if there is even satisfaction to be had from recognition of the plights the government caused.
Do Inuit people receive reparations? What the government did to the Inuit is pretty messed up, dislocating families and setting up arctic towns which then force a portion of their population into financial struggle. The Canadian government needs to do more for the Nunavut economy especially regarding its native people.
*Inuit. Not inuit people. The word inuit means people. Learn it 😅
@@daveshen0880 my bad!!!
@@Valorant-is-Trash Its ok.
I wish the government improved good politics to help people there.
Canada needs immigration to grow, and this place would be considered if it had the basic needs to live in.
Unfortunately, it is one of the places in the world where the natives are not taking into account.
Yes
Happy Nunavut Day! As a Canadian I noticed the term "Native" used a lot. While generally it refers to the initial population of an area; Canadians prefer Indigenous, or First Nations. Native is considered racist/derogatory. Knit pick aside, such an interesting video! I love channels that focus on highlighting Canada (the good and bad). Much love!
I like the way that you pronounce Cambridge and Soviet. Easier on the ears than the more harsh current standard, you trendsetting rascal you !
very good explained!
If you’re going to do videos on my home, especially as a colonizer, at least learn to pronounce our literally colonized named towns right.
could have done better, that's for sure
Bro he didn’t colonize Nunavut, he had nothing to do with that he’s not even living in Canada he’s European so take your anger out on Canada’s government instead.
He's not a colonizer your being nothing but an ignorant racist. This man did an amazing job.
Cope and seethe
You talk about Canadian "colonialism" and are even using a GDR manufactured monitor. You talk about the damage done by the DEW line. It makes me wonder about your political motivation.
yes their territory was colonized. It's crazy the mental gymnastics some people will do to not make it their problem.
@@jonathandpg6115 I don't have to go through any mental gymnastics. It's not my problem plain and simple. I'll let you sit up all night taking on the burden of a situation in which you had no personal involvement.
