No matter how well it holds up in a modern context, Ocarina of Time will always stay in my heart. The experience I had with the game as a nine year old back then was special, unique and can never be replicated again. After seeing so many suddenly decide Egoraptor is the ultimate expert on what makes a good Zelda game and what doesn't, it's SOOOOOOOOOOO good to see OoT is still very much appreciated.
One thing I love about OOT is how the story evolves. The game allows you to acquaint yourself with the world, and get to know the characters and the landscape. You grow fond of it by playing through the first few chapters. And THEN it gets effed up by Ganondorf. The market is obliterated. Your Kokori friends are hiding indoors. The Gorons are dragon fodder. Zoras are frozen. By the time things go bad, you already feel like a part of Hyrule. And thus your quest takes on that much more weight
There were actually a lot of people who predicted the impact OoT would have on games for years to come. It's one of the reasons why many publications gave it a perfect score. It was the first 10/10 that IGN ever gave out, in part because they realized that the game was an absolute technical milestone that people would be talking about for decades down the road
I will never tire of OoT retrospectives. The characters, the story, the music, the battles, the worldbuilding, and of course the artstyle. BotW is the only LoZ game that has come close to capturing that.
I think, part of why I fell in love with the dark souls franchise, is that it felt like a more fleshed out aspect of ocarina of time. Namely, the sword-fighting, lockon, aspect. And I think I've play OoT since I was like 7 years old or something. So there is a lot of nostalgic value there.
12:22 You wanna bet on that part? I only needed to roll constantly enough to REACH Hyrule Castle Town from Kokiri Forest safely BEFORE sunset several times for each playthrough before the Wolf's howl. And NO, I didn't even NEED to walk backwards for a faster pace.

Im not a big zelda fan either but I do enjoy what are considered some of the more different zelda games in Links Awakening, Minish Cap and my favorite Zelda Majoras Mask
I agree about the Temple names. I would have preferred something like: Forest Mansion Fire Cavern Water Temple Shadow Catacombs Spirit Palace Ganon's Tower Just to give some variety
What stands out to me about OoT is the overall atmosphere, which they absolutely nailed. Every point in the story feels real and immersive, every action you take feels meaningful. I can honestly not make the same claim about several modern games I've played.
One of my favorite games of all time… I remember buying it on release day.. it was the first Zelda game I purchased with my own money. Zelda, Zelda 2 and a Link to the Past were gifted to me. I never understood the complaints that everyone seems to have with the water temple. I never had an issue. While I do prefer a Link to the Past, Majoras Mask and Breath of the Wild over Ocarania of Time… this game still has a special place in my childhood. The mainline “The Legend of Zelda” games are timeless and ageless. ( except Wind Waker, I barely was capable of slogging through that hot garbage the first time and have never been able to bring myself to push through it again) I’m currently introducing my daughter to the series… starting with the original and playing them in order of release… the way I played them.
I loved coming back to Kokiri forest and pretending I was telling the others about my adventures and I was kinda sad not seeing Saria around, just to later on learning I had enter the Sacred Grove. I used to just hang around in the temple of time listening to that amazing chant. I felt my destiny was calling 😂
ahem, you can make it to Hyrule castle before nighttime running forward. It gets down to the wire, and often I am entering Hyrule while the drawbridge is literally raising, but still pretty doable.
I had the opposite experience on a number of points. For example, I struggled with the Ganondorf fight but felt the Ganon one was far too easy. I think I only took one hit on the latter, but died a number of times on the former. Great game
@@CloudConnection Just finished the video. I was surprised you didn't enjoy the fishing because my immediate memories of the fishing hole are really positive. I remember spending a lot of time hanging out in there as a kid, and I recall the controls being really satisfying and the environment quite relaxing. But you then reminded me how luck-based it was and I realize there's no way I would put up with that now as an adult. I probably spent a few hours trying to remove the dude's hat in the fishing hole. I haven't played through OoT in full in nearly 20 years, but all of your criticisms and praise ring true to my memories of it now.
Yeah when I say I didn't enjoy the fishing, it was purely because of the luck factor. I agree that the controls are responsove and it does have a relaxing atmosphere - but for me, the reliance on luck that's mostly out of your control kills it.
As always the development part is always new and interesting information in your videos and this development portion was filled with interesting facts. I was so excited to see this video from when you announced it and I'm so glad to be able to watch it. This is without a doubt one of the most important games to me personally and to gaming in general and the fact that we can still make thorough discussions about such an iconic game says a lot about its... development lol.
This is a great video I really appreciate how you're not just stating what was new and interesting about the game but how it's relevant as well and comparison to other games that were coming out at the time. 5 out of five stars ✨
I'll never forget being a dumb kid playing this with my cousin and after weeks we finally collected the spiritual stones and opened the door of time.... I'll never forget that moment. 20 something years later I still consider it the best game I've ever played
Excellent video. There are a couple of things that amaze me about this game. Firstly, it's so so much better than the majority of other N64 games of the time. I think that's why it got such widespread acclaim because back then people didn't realise that the N64 console was capable of such an epic adventure. Secondly, it's the only Zelda game I've actually enjoyed. I've always found RPG style games to be my least favourite type of game. My favourite types of game are racing, sports and shooting. I like games you can turn on and after a few clicks on a menu you can be playing a high action, fast paced round of whatever it is you're playing. I also prefer games that are similar to real life scenarios like Forza Motorsport, CoD or FIFA. I tend not to like games that involve any kind of fantasy or magic elements, which this game obviously has. So the most impressive thing for me is that I like it. I just wanted to keep playing and I was so involved in the story and quests that nothing else at the time mattered except progressing further in the game. It's one of only 3 adventure/RPG style games I've ever completed (the other 2 being Stick of Truth and The Fractured But Whole and I only completed them because I'm a massive fan of South Park). I didn't like Majoras Mask, I got bored of that after about 10 hours and never finished it. I really didn't like Skyrim and I really don't like Breath of the Wild. I found them boring and tedious to play, whereas I found this engaging all the way through and I absolutely love it. It's not my favourite game ever (Forza Horizon 4 is) but because of how I continued to be engaged by it and because it does things I didn't think an N64 could do, I would personally crown it the "Most Impressive" game of all time.
When the review gets to Link grabbing the Master Sword, I believe the reason his spirit is locked away is because Ganon hadnt officially attacked yet. In other Zelda games, he does set his plan in motion so the boy (Original, A Link to the Past, Wind Waker) doesnt have his spirit locked away.
This was our first shot at a game like this, lay off, we did our best. You make the first 3D open world game and think of every little thing…we tried our hardest!!!!
Probably among the games that shaped my tastes as a young un. This along with Resident Evil 2, Final Fantasy 7, NiGHTS, Shenmue, Metal Gear Solid and Goldeneye. Among many
It's definitely true that, by modern standards, OoT doesn't hold up as well our memories suggests it does. Though I'd argue comparing any N64 game by modern standards is unfair. Same could be said of the early consoles like Atari or the Commodore in relation to what 2D games were in the SNES era. Let alone now. That said I do very much love Ocarina of Time. In fact it was probably the first Zelda game I had the skill to beat. Eventually. Though that probably was partly due to the prima guide I know we had back then. Not even ashamed as I would have been 5 when OoT released in the US. (Had prior experience with ALttP, but that game was too hard for tiny me for a long time. On and off replays where I got further in each time before backing off. Turtle Rock held me captive for . . . a while as a kid.) It has problems of course, but most of them are only so noticeable in hindsight even if they are more a product of the age and availible technology. Usually. Like how Z-Targeting was better, faster, and more responsive by the time Wind Waker released. Or hell even Majora's Mask to an extent. Ocarina of Times' credits still stir my emotions to this day. The whole climax does really. The whole final section after entering Ganon's Castle may be my favorite in the series.
What’s crazy about OoT is that, as well known and well received as it is, it sold less than Mario Kart and Goldeneye… and this was long before Mario Kart was the system seller it became later.
It's still the highest ratted to this day. It came out during the biggest leap in graphics literally ever at the time when games first started doing real true 3D. Gameplay mechanics first put into OOT are still being used to those day such as the lock on mechanic which is literally the same mechanic now used in the souls games, also great games by the way. I can list many more reasons why it's probably still the best game ever made in my opinion but I won't bother the video does that anyway and most watching it have probably already played it and loved it just like myself.
And the owl flys you around. And you can get around with short cuts like dark souls. So i feel lile the people who say that its too big havnt playrd the game in a while and are just looking for something to complain about so it doesnt just look like theyre just praising the game too much
@@maicalk5405 sure but the game iisnt meant to be grinding enemies. The poes arent even worth killing. The empty field with the music. Reminds me of real life walking through a field .. It would slow the game down so much if you had to fight people in the field. Take away from getting to the next thing to do
This thing about people don't liking to press start to change the boots in the water temple is something that I heard since, maybe a decade or so. But back in the day I NEVER heard about it. I think it has something to do with modern sensibilities. People are used to better interfaces. I don't think it's a problem like all of you pretend, it's just something that could be improved. Not such a big deal at all. You don't have to change boots so often, just think what you want to do before starting to do it. In fact I'd apply some of that reasoning to the entire water temple. The design is actually great, it forces the player to really THINK what he is doing, the mortal flaw is just one. In one given moment the camera doesn't point the right place when rising the water level and there's a small hole that the player can easily ignore. Which translates into a lot of walking and swimming and switching boots over hours, trying to figure out what's missing. That was fixed in the ocarina of time 3d release and now it could be my favorite temple ever. And I mean EVER, in the entire franchise. From the design and mechanics point of view it's way too advanced for its time. It used the 3d environment brilliantly when no one had used it ever. The verticality, and even the bosses. Dark Link is freaking great.
42:14 Are you kidding me? Ganon is a pushover compared to Ganondorf. I dont know how many times I've fallen from the high platforms where you fight ganondorf. Meanwhile Ganon you just jump around him and hit his behind. Of course the timed escape form the castle is harder than either boss.
I hate when people claim it's just nostalgia. We didn't have everything back then,we couldn't see everything at the tap of a finger. We played Zelda games and we seen adventure movies with swords and nights. But aside from a tiny sprite in the snes games... there was no game where you could really feel you were in a world and really the character. Mario64 and OOT are such a huge leap from what came before. I know it's impossible. But try to imagine having never seen this and all the games and movies (with Special effects) that came after, imagine none of that exists.then one day your older brother comes home with this,Mario64 and wave race. Plus It isn't because of nostalgia, it IS my nostalgia for my childhood.
As a kid, I despised Navi for just straight up leaving at her earliest opportunity. "Hey Navi, we did it, we saved Hyrul!" Navi: "Bye loser" then yeets right out the window D=
What do you mean walking backwards is the only way to get to Hyrule Castle for the first time faster? I just rolled and always made it by the raising of the bridge.
I hated Windwaker when it first came out. Not because of its graphical style but how it ended. As time shifted though and I've thought back on the ending and the events leading to it. I've come to really appreciate it. Making Windwaker one of my favorites in the entire franchise. I also think Zelda's influence is still being seen today something have aged like milk but others have aged like fine wine. It's still being felt.
Finally a positive Ocarina of Time review I personally think that this game is my favorite Nintendo game ever made not my all-time favorite because that title goes to Donkey Kong Country 2 but I do agree that this is my second favorite video game ever made it's a masterpiece and no other game will ever take that away from this not even Majora's Mask despite what a lot of people will have you believe that Majora's Mask is better than this game but here's the thing not a lot of people got to play Majora's Mask because it was panned by critics and a lot of fans back then I mean I didn't even know what this game was until way later in my teenage years so in my opinion Ocarina of Time is the best Zelda game ever made though a lot of people will say breath the wild is the best game in the series and I'm not saying that game is bad I just haven't played enough of it and from what I played so far yeah that game is actually the best game but not better than Ocarina though I will say graphic wise breath of the wild has the best graphics hands down. Now when I say that I like Ocarina of Time I'm talking about Ocarina of Time 3D for the 3DS the original game despite it being a classic really doesn't hold up anymore still look pretty good game but not what I would consider better than the 3DS version however despite me saying that that's not to say I think the original sucks in fact I like playing the original I just don't think it holds up anymore that's all I'm saying anyways that's all I have to say hope you guys have a wonderful day and remember stay cool
20:00 Well I disagree here. ANY item in the game has it's use and nothing feels replaced in any way! The Light Arrow deals 4 times the damage from a regular arrow and gives ALWAYS 50 rupees! I think it has it's uses! The megaton hammer gives Link the ability to flip enemies and lock them on the ground. Making it easier to fight!
i feel like i missed OOT's cultural moment. as an aspiring student of design i can appreciate all the uncharted territory OOT trailblazed but it just doesn't connect to me as a piece of art. it's a lot like Superman where i recognize the historic value but also don't enjoy reading about him as a character very often. it doesn't help that the kid dungeons are really bana outside of deku tree, and adult Link's only good dungeons are spirit and water from a layout and design perspective. no other dungeon really uses 3D space well and their ideas are iterated upon better in sequels. ultimately, i feel a lot of OOT's cultural staying power is a combination of nostalgia and the ground it laid for better sequels. it's game i want to like more but i simply don't, but i find essays like this a nice window into why this piece of art resonated with so many people
At 22:46 That moment was the first time I experienced fear in a game 😨 And at 22:56, I just froze and asked my father to pass this part 😅 That was the only time I asked him. My first playthrough as a kid.
Skip the owls text as fast as you can, then roll your way to the castle. I couldn't make it in time only the first time I played. It never happend to me again. :)
I don’t think a game will have an impact on the gaming industry like oot did back in 1998 it’s still one of my favorite games ever made just right behind my favorite majoras mask
I'm planning to cover Majora's Mask next year as a follow-up to this video, but as for other Zelda games beyond that, no real plans for that yet. Maybe one day I'll get to them, though!
I'm glad you specified that the biggoron sword is great but the quest isn't so great. I love the quest because the sword is outstanding but the quest is a bit dry.
Ocarina of Time was never a game I owned for the N64, but it was a game I played consistently through friends and the like until I was in adulthood and started to collect retro games. I will say this, the N64 zelda games hold up. OoT is my favorite game. Period. Not even majoras mask comes close, although pretty good in and of itself. It's just challenging enough if you don't know what you're doing to make it tough to figure out what to do, but not so hard as to stomp your motivation to beat it (outside of the one key chest at the bottom of the center column of the water temple.) It doesn't hold your hand, but it doesn't make you feel like your swimming in open water with nowhere to go. You don't need everything to beat it, but if you're daring enough you can. BOTW is shit. There I said it. It holds nothing that makes zelda games what they are. Wind waker is a distant third to OoT and MM though.
One of the reasons Ocarina was so perfect is because it's what Link to the Past should've been, but ended up being a 2D prototype because they didn't have the technology yet.
How can link go from child to adult in 7 years? Does hyrule has a shorter life expectency which means 14 years old (or there abouts) is considered adult? I noticed Lon Lon ranch is hyrules only agricultural area. Hyrulians must live on Lon Lon milk, fish from lake hyrule an items from the wonderful hyrule market which is very small. It must be lack of decent food that creates hyrules short life expectancy or those skeletons at night?
No matter how well it holds up in a modern context, Ocarina of Time will always stay in my heart. The experience I had with the game as a nine year old back then was special, unique and can never be replicated again.

Fire Cavern
Water Temple
Shadow Catacombs
Spirit Palace
Ganon's Tower
Just to give some variety
That's why we have the 3D version on DS, that one looks way better today
You CAN actually make it to Castle Town before the gate closes if you beeline to the gate and roll there.
Yeah, I routinely get in before the first night, and I've never run any distance backwards.
You are such a UNDERRATED RUclipsr!! The research and care you put into your retrospectives is absolutely jaw dropping in quality!!
What stands out to me about OoT is the overall atmosphere, which they absolutely nailed. Every point in the story feels real and immersive, every action you take feels meaningful. I can honestly not make the same claim about several modern games I've played.
Get a ps4 and play Shadow of the Colossus if you want Atmosphere in a game!
( except Wind Waker, I barely was capable of slogging through that hot garbage the first time and have never been able to bring myself to push through it again)
I’m currently introducing my daughter to the series… starting with the original and playing them in order of release… the way I played them.
Great game
27:50 I never knew you could crouch under those blades.
Dude, awesome video. The amount of care, attention, and detail that went into this is phenomenal!
Thanks man! I'm very proud with how this one turned out
This encapsulates my youth like no other video game. Thank you for this video!
I'm playing this game for the first time on my youtube channel and I can say that this video is great.
Thank you so much!
@@CloudConnection No, Thank you for making such a great video
Very well done. I'm glad this is a critical look at the game instead of just a summary of its events - makes it more interesting.
Thanks dude - and yeah, I attempted to balance critical writing with enough summary to contextualize everything.
Thanks dude! It's a really important game to me as well. I'm glad to have done it justice here.
Goddammit why don't you have more subscribers and viewers. Your stuff is so indepth and high effort
Thanks so much! I try my hardest
"When he takes the sword out its pedestal that's when everything goes arrie"
*youtube shorts ad plays *
Well done man this was great
Without this game I wouldn’t have my masterpiece majoras and dark souls. Btw this is my second fav Zelda game also
They created a whole world and then people complain that the world is too big. The world should be big, otherwise it wouldn't feel like a whole world.
I've been waiting for this one and it was everything I'd hoped for!
What’s crazy about OoT is that, as well known and well received as it is, it sold less than Mario Kart and Goldeneye… and this was long before Mario Kart was the system seller it became later.
My fav game of all time :) good memories
Awesome. I remember Christmas '98... and the following months of fantastic gameplay. :D
Siiickk. Been looking forward to this one.
So i feel lile the people who say that its too big havnt playrd the game in a while and are just looking for something to complain about so it doesnt just look like theyre just praising the game too much
i kinda wish they had more enemies in the overworld because after you defeat all 10 giant poes it feels kind of empty
@@maicalk5405 sure but the game iisnt meant to be grinding enemies. The poes arent even worth killing.
The empty field with the music. Reminds me of real life walking through a field ..
It would slow the game down so much if you had to fight people in the field. Take away from getting to the next thing to do
good stuff. you hooked me on the banjo deep dives but love the zelda stuff too
This thing about people don't liking to press start to change the boots in the water temple is something that I heard since, maybe a decade or so.
27:45 about that, how about the music? I mean that forest temple tune playing in the background might be one of the best. But I think it all warks
You deserve much more subs. Keep up the great work they'll come
As a kid, I despised Navi for just straight up leaving at her earliest opportunity. "Hey Navi, we did it, we saved Hyrul!" Navi: "Bye loser" then yeets right out the window D=
Brooooo oh my god how do you not have more subscribers. This video is amazing and deserves more attention.
Not really
How are we going to get your subscriber count up? You deserve a lot more. Keep up the great work.
Thanks so much!
What do you mean walking backwards is the only way to get to Hyrule Castle for the first time faster? I just rolled and always made it by the raising of the bridge.
Just tried this yesterday on my n64 and can confirm rolling gets you to Hyrule castle on time
I swear that title theme always gets the best of me 😪
This is the greatest game of all time in my opinion. Can we have a sequel to Majorca’s Mask to complete the Hero of Time trilogy?
There is. It's called Twilight Princess.
Well made video, maybe make a sequel to this explaining the (new) legacy of OOT glitches
Will always treasure this title and it's story
I wish i could wipe my memory of this game from my brain so i could experience it for the first time all over again
Play the Master Quest. Trust me it's worth it.
Most difficult part of the game is fighting Dark Link without the cheese 🧀
I remember trying to get the Triforce under Ganons castle as a kid.
I hate the myth that you can’t get to castle town from the forest before night time. It’s incredibly easy and doable just by running.
i feel like i missed OOT's cultural moment. as an aspiring student of design i can appreciate all the uncharted territory OOT trailblazed but it just doesn't connect to me as a piece of art. it's a lot like Superman where i recognize the historic value but also don't enjoy reading about him as a character very often.
it doesn't help that the kid dungeons are really bana outside of deku tree, and adult Link's only good dungeons are spirit and water from a layout and design perspective. no other dungeon really uses 3D space well and their ideas are iterated upon better in sequels.
ultimately, i feel a lot of OOT's cultural staying power is a combination of nostalgia and the ground it laid for better sequels. it's game i want to like more but i simply don't, but i find essays like this a nice window into why this piece of art resonated with so many people
Good video. However you can absolutely make it to hyrule castle when you first leave lost woods WITHOUT walking backwards.
You absolutely *can* reach the castle without running backwards. It’s close, but I always make it now.
14:06 hahaha. So true that one!
Great Video, you should have more subscribers
At 22:46 That moment was the first time I experienced fear in a game 😨 And at 22:56, I just froze and asked my father to pass this part 😅 That was the only time I asked him. My first playthrough as a kid.
I dont know i find the pacing was just right and not to slow.
Skip the owls text as fast as you can, then roll your way to the castle. I couldn't make it in time only the first time I played. It never happend to me again. :)
Great video!!
I don’t think a game will have an impact on the gaming industry like oot did back in 1998 it’s still one of my favorite games ever made just right behind my favorite majoras mask
Growing up wuth this game in the late 2000's, I felt that the game did great.
Thanks for this I was bored af lol :)
Do you think this will turn into a series like your Banjo Kazooie one? Or just this one for OoT?
I'm planning to cover Majora's Mask next year as a follow-up to this video, but as for other Zelda games beyond that, no real plans for that yet. Maybe one day I'll get to them, though!
I'm glad you specified that the biggoron sword is great but the quest isn't so great. I love the quest because the sword is outstanding but the quest is a bit dry.
Yeah that quest is really boring and monotonous, but it's worth it because of how great the sword is, especially against the bosses.
I STILL have my golden special edition with the box.
Ocarina of Time deserves a remake. And we deserve it as well.
