The best part for me was the scene where Gunther is carrying Myne alongside Tuuli. I definitely teared up to this scene given the subtle beauty and implications. Gunther has such a pure and purposeful soul, it's no wonder his family adore him and others follow him. Also, look at that artwork! Who do I need to thank at Ajiado for such wonderful art? I want some of these scenes on my wall! As for the rest of the ep, it was an excellent episode for reacquainting the audience with the prominent characters and setting the tone for things to come. As for what's to come, I recall thinking while reading the light novels "this would be great if it were animated!". I honestly can't wait. I feel like we're in the midst of something special that few are aware of. When the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings was published for the first time did anyone really notice? When the first Harry Potter book became available was it much more than "yet another young adult fantasy"? "Ascendance of a Bookworm" got me into reading light novels and I've read quite a few different series since. I can tell you that Miya Kazuki's writing skills and the story she tells are set apart from the rest. She writes in a flowing manner with purpose. You never feel you're wasting your time as she puts a lot of thought into each page and passage. When you open up one of her novels you're stepping into the world she's painted and exploring it along with its beloved characters.

I think the Jenny screen was super great, it really was a reminder that "bad shit was gonna happen this season" vibe, ominous and dark And the way she looked down on Delia is actually really great character display, but for most it wont seem like much; but when you know the context those eyes says a lot about what was in her mind at the time. the contrast between her and Delia is also really great. I loved this first episode so much and so happy you're doing these reactions! Maybe it's just because it feels like it's been so long but seeing Benno and Myne interact like that was just so funny. I do think these flashbacks are a good way to 'fix' things they skipped over in previous seasons but i do wonder how anime only people feel about the new info does it seem too convenient or just accepted that it was missed? The light novels do so much world and character building that everything feels right and callbacks are rewarding so hope the anime onlys feel the same. Amazing as always magpie can't wait for the next!!!
Totally agree about Gunther. I loved him in the books but i love him even more in the anime. They did such a great job of getting his character across.
Great insights, especially the messages you pointed out in the opening! My glob this season be waterworks. I suppose my favorite scene would be Lutz being sort of 'rescued' by Mark. That's like subtle but consistent implication for our gentleman Benno's righthand man there ehe.
10:30 i assumed the one holding the tray was the one who told fran about delia and also the scene was to emphasize the nuance of delias life at the temple... fran did say deliah needs to survive in the temple if mynes not around .. perspective from a non light novel reader
Didn't really look much at the shot of them walking towards the temple, but looking at it here it is great, life at the streets as you say and the light from the windoows.
I definitely feel like Benno is much shoutier in the Anime vs in the LNs. I mean, they definitely describe him raising his voice, but him outright shouting at Myne happens only a couple of times in the LN by this point, and both instances that clearly come to mind are within 5 minutes of each other as Myne makes two pretty significant blunders in rapid succession, being her walking back from the temple in her blue robes, and her saying that Benno would basically bring the funds over immediately.
Loved the episode, but my greatest fear for this season (or series in general) would be for the anime to gloss over the backstory for Fran, Arno, Wolf, Jenni, or... stair climbing events in general. A big part of this series for me is that things are not "fine", but things continue and characters can improve themselves and become better human beings. (I think I said that in the least spoilerish way possible...)
Your title card made me worry something was wrong with the new season, so I'm glad it was about something else. Still trying to get the light novels. (Got the first one and loving it) but the shady green hair guy caught my attention too. Oh dear.
I'm so excited for season 3 let's go!!! I'm a part of the LN gang, so I know where this season's going. And knowing what's happening at the end of this season, I've gotta say having so much focus on Myne's two lives and how much lonelier she is alone is definitely a good play. I want to stay as vague as I can for the anime only fans (Come on guys its about a story about a bookworm and her books you guys need to read it :P) but I'm sure the LN readers can guess how I'm feeling knowing what's ahead.
Oh yeah, I loved it. My boy Johann finally gets some screen time. Seriously, he got ONE LINE in the second season, and I'm pretty sure that was a flashback. I will say that the 'lived in' city is nice, but you have to remember that they are heading into the temple and the people on the street look like they belong in the south side of the city (patched clothing and bags). Remember, this is like right outside of Frieda's house and the Othmar company, based off the Baptism scene in season one. Light novels did not have anything directly with wolf, even in POV chapters. Nice to see the anime expand a bit on the story based on what was told secondhand. That bed scene where it goes between the bed at her home in the lower city, full of her family members and her bed in the temple, empty except for her does hit you in the feels. Yeah, there were those nights where she was sleeping in a bed by herself back at Frieda's, but she was rather sick at the time, and once she regained consciousness Frieda came and slept in the same bed with her. This is a hard and lonely winter for her, where every night is spent alone. From this point on she has to rely on Tuuli and Lutz for hugs when they come... and later just Lutz, and even that gets taken from her. I will blame Ferdinand for enabling her to continue that outside of his sight and not just give her shumils to raise like every other noble girl.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts ! Haha yeah you're right they arr walking in what looks to be the southern side of the city. I missed that because I was so distracted by the tears in my eyes 😆
Watching your videos made me feel like i talking about my favourite show with friend My friends don't watch or read bookworm, so i really-really love your videos About episode, i love relationships between Myne and people around her, like Lutz, Benno and her family. Even this one episode show it very clear, and it's kinda sad to know that will happen in their future. Well, /Spoilers in the future, Rosemine will surround a lot of wonderful people, but i just really love this relationship with family, Lutz and Benno. Well, i guess, it's how it works in real life too: relationships with new people can be great, but it will be different relationships and different people, and nothing will be the same
I also have no friends who have read this LN or watched the anime hence why I started this channel 🤗. I think this whole story is all about relationships and bonds with other people. Regarding familiar bonds, We see that while circumstances may change true love can and will stand distance and the test of time 😭.
I'm really glad they moved all the re-caps to the two preview... ova... things they released and went straight into it in the episode proper. I wish more anime would do that. I was quite surprised they showed the back of the noble that Wolf was involved with. In the novels the identity of the noble or nobles who did business with Wolf were never even hinted at and here we not only get to see his back, but together with later scenes that they already showed in the trailer, we know exactly which noble it is. I'm sure that the bow in the OP is not THAT bow... Myne specifically said THAT bow was a Japanese bow. That means hands on the side of the body and the head also bowed, not only the body. Maybe they are hinting toward it, but it is not THAT bow itself. In the LN the ink guild guys confronted Lutz outside the merchant's guild (and was carrying documents, rather than cloth), which is a very public and busy place, so I'm pretty sure they couldn't have gotten that physical with him, even though it is never specified what exactly they did. Wait... you thought that Ferdinand would relax... like, ever? Did you even read the books? :P
Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Also regarding Ferdinand, it's just me and wishful thinking!! Please let me at least have the hope of seeing him do something other than work and stress 😭
@@TheChatteringMagpi Actually, at this point he was looking much older than he actually was due to practically living on potions so he could get all the work done at the temple. Bezewantz was completely useless so he had to do his work, and he didn't trust any of the blue priests (especially not the High Bishops lackies). Ferdinand would LOVE to research, but he just doesn't have the time. It doesn't help that the Archduke and High Bishop kept dumping small chalices on them and the castle scholars keep requesting his help there.
My favorite moment was Johann times, not gonna lie. Myne's scene when she sleeps, I remember that she did this comparison at some point how she feels lonely in her big, empty bed in contrast to how she cuddled with her family in the lower city. Seeing it animated and hearing her break down just makes my heart hurt even more ;_;
I really like seeing Johann properly introduced. They gave him a good amount of screen time, plus my favorite scene of when he confused Benno for Myne's dad.
My favorite thing in this episode was how the Ink Guild plotline got going. Benno gets Main to sell the picture book, The Ink Guild gets one and sees the quality of her ink. This leads to them to start causing trouble. It's clean makes since and feels very natural. Very well done plot progression.
It's not the quality of the ink that's the problem, it's that she's using ink at all without going through the guild (even though they don't have the ink she needs).
In the LN Myne starts listing off all sorts of different inks that could be made. She wanted to confirm what kind was being made and then realized that although the Ink Guild ink was good for parchment, the acidity of the ink will cause holes to appear in plant paper over time. And for printing, she needs a stickier ink that they didn't make.
Tricky thing about that sunset over the temple… if you've ever seen the maps in the light novels you'll know that the temple gate faces south… and the sun doesn't set in the north.
First off i really enjoyed the glow up the art and animation got, well desevered though for some reason it also feels like more of a last hurrah than a set the lbar for future seasons decision. Having recently reread these volumes in preparation though, I was actually a bit disappointed with this episode. Like you mentioned the lack of printing guild content was one. Myne selling the books in the LN was primarily a push to justify the printing guild not out of a desperate need for money as depicted in the anime, in fact she wanted to drive the price of books to the floor to make it easier for people to access. The Benno/Johann/Myne interaction in the anime focused more on first accentuating Myne's weakness and indecision before her gremlin rampage. In the LN she was actually quite gung-ho about it and Benno essentially said 'do what you want, she has the money for it' instead of first playing the guardian card. The animes agenda seems to really be trying to highlight Myne's weakness and indecisiveness, to push her into things slightly against her will. Knowing how the season is going to end I imagine this is to really accentuate that big payoff. Since we have so few episodes to work with I get why it's being done, but it does truly bum me out because she was certainly more decisive during this period about wanting to accelerate things at her own pace THEN getting reigned in. Hopefully they give her a bit more agency in the rest of the episodes and re-establish her act first justify later character that makes her so likeable.
When Gunther brought the (nuts?) For Myne I was wondering If I had a real bad memory caus'I didn't remembered what the hell it was, but thinking about it, it's anime supplementary content to fit the format I think. It's so interesting to see the difference between anime and novel !!!
The episode was superb. What i was a bit miffed about was that i read this season is only 10 episodes? While i understand that it adepts the rest of arc 2 and there might not be much more storrywise i was hoping they would instead using the episode count to exclude less from the sourcematerial. ,-(
The episode felt a bit fast for me, but I'm not surprised considering that the season will only be 10 episodes long. I just hope this will not be detrimental to the story later on in the season
Yeah I think this season will go at a breakneck pace, lol. But that means it will be action packed, too and that they will take their time at the end for the important scenes.
Yes. She made a contract that gave her 30% for ten years, 20% for ten years after that and then 10% for all time. This contract was made with all the ink guilds that use the recipe, not just the Ehrenfest ink guild. While this deal will eventually get her tons of money, right now she is the only one using this ink, so it's essentially just lowering the price of her ink to 70% of the price.
I am almost at the end of part 2 volume 2 and can someone please explain what exactly the thug did to Lutz? It's not clear in the anime. Did he beat him up, rob him or did he give him a good tickle ?
So I checked the LN. It says multiple men ganged up and cornered him asking him questions about "The Gilberta Company girl" but there is no indication that they actually roughened him up or harmed him (thank goodness).
It's on Crunchyroll! Unfortunately as of Spring Season they aren't letting us watch (the version with ads) like before, so it's behind the pay wall 😕 beta.crunchyroll.com/series/G6793XKZY
you can tell some of the animation is "conservative" i hope that is because they knew where they needed to put their time in (sylvester and spring prayer: ) also the opening having her run was funny to me, gotta enjoy that body strength while she has it neh?
I won't be able to put aside what I know about a certain green haired gray priest during this season. I shall be wishing him all manner of untimely ends, sadly we LN readers know what must come to pass.
I'm so confused because my crunchyroll app doesn't have this episode available. honestly if it wasn't for the hallairity of the book series "critical failures" that I've been reading i would be quite unhappy.
@@TheChatteringMagpi yeah I checked it again after watching your video and the options had changed from season one and four to season one and three and it is there as episode 27 of season three which I find strange because it is episode 1 of season 3 but I don't know why they have the whole of the series listed a a single season. And yeah, It is about a group of drunken idiots who while playing a very d&d like game anger the game master and find themselves suddenly in the bodies of their characters mid adventure
I was slightly bothered by the Benno/Freida scene. I just re-read the book not too long ago and their interaction was not nearly so hostile in the book. It made Benno seem far too petty. The chibi fight was amusing though.
@@TheChatteringMagpi Some day I'd like to hear a run down on how level of mana and the color of mana plays on a couple's attraction to one another, and their ability to procreate. I feel that at this point in the English LN the topic has not been covered as much as it could for obvious plot considerations. I honestly don't know, but I think it's going to be a VERY important point.
@@iLuv4Play in truth I have written the script for a video on this and even had Beta Readers go through it. I just have to actually finish the corrections and stuff. I Will get to it soon, I hope.
In my opinion the 3rd season kind of pulls away from her and her family when her mother is going to have the child knowing she would more unlikely put more into her mother's child and helping but she needs to grow up so by this happening to her hopefully the fourth season this will teach her to grow up more and to be more aware of her surroundings cuz she's too naive
Delia is posed as if she is confessing to the Archbishop. Like someone confessing sins to a priest. Thankfully it isnt anything gross. But I also am overall uncomfortable with the scene due to our knowledge of Delia originally being groomed by him.

They missed a trick with Lutz tea service by not doing a close up of the official Bookworm Myne tea set merch :) :)
I saw this video pop up on my feed and it reminded me that episode 1 came out today. I rushed to go watch it before hearing your thoughts about it.
t
This was so very on the mark , Loved it ! Doing a great job ,
Loved the episode, but my greatest fear for this season (or series in general) would be for the anime to gloss over the backstory for Fran, Arno, Wolf, Jenni, or... stair climbing events in general. A big part of this series for me is that things are not "fine", but things continue and characters can improve themselves and become better human beings. (I think I said that in the least spoilerish way possible...)
I agree. To keep it kid friendly they might avoid certain story lines. I hope they don't, though.
Your title card made me worry something was wrong with the new season, so I'm glad it was about something else. Still trying to get the light novels. (Got the first one and loving it) but the shady green hair guy caught my attention too. Oh dear.
I LIVE FOR YOUR CONTENT
I'm so excited for season 3 let's go!!!
I'm a part of the LN gang, so I know where this season's going. And knowing what's happening at the end of this season, I've gotta say having so much focus on Myne's two lives and how much lonelier she is alone is definitely a good play. I want to stay as vague as I can for the anime only fans (Come on guys its about a story about a bookworm and her books you guys need to read it :P) but I'm sure the LN readers can guess how I'm feeling knowing what's ahead.
Its also free to read this month (April 22) on J-novel, thats the official published translation
Watching your videos made me feel like i talking about my favourite show with friend
My friends don't watch or read bookworm, so i really-really love your videos
About episode, i love relationships between Myne and people around her, like Lutz, Benno and her family. Even this one episode show it very clear, and it's kinda sad to know that will happen in their future. Well,
/Spoilers
in the future, Rosemine will surround a lot of wonderful people, but i just really love this relationship with family, Lutz and Benno. Well, i guess, it's how it works in real life too:
relationships with new people can be great, but it will be different relationships and different people, and nothing will be the same
I also have no friends who have read this LN or watched the anime hence why I started this channel 🤗.
@@TheChatteringMagpi Well... there is researching, which (at least to him) is neither work nor stressing. ^^
My favorite moment was Johann times, not gonna lie. Myne's scene when she sleeps, I remember that she did this comparison at some point how she feels lonely in her big, empty bed in contrast to how she cuddled with her family in the lower city. Seeing it animated and hearing her break down just makes my heart hurt even more ;_;
I really like seeing Johann properly introduced. They gave him a good amount of screen time, plus my favorite scene of when he confused Benno for Myne's dad.
@@TheChatteringMagpi I mean, technically Benno IS Myne's business dad hahaha
This is so true!!! 😆 great catch. You gotta admit it looks pretty though lol.
@@TheChatteringMagpi It could have been the west gate… except at that point in the anime she was on her way to the temple.
Two videos back to back!
Watching it I just thought “Johan you’re going to regret it.”
When Gunther brought the (nuts?) For Myne I was wondering If I had a real bad memory caus'I didn't remembered what the hell it was, but thinking about it, it's anime supplementary content to fit the format I think. It's so interesting to see the difference between anime and novel !!!

The sun sets at the north is cannon
TRUE!!! thanks for pointing that out, but... well... as long as it looks pretty I will let it slide.
@@TheChatteringMagpi it also did in seasson 1 :) its an anime thing and it looks cool
@@peterneimann9803 what? Really??? I hadn't even noticed 😆
Johan's journey of suffering begins
They DID warn him...
The episode was superb. What i was a bit miffed about was that i read this season is only 10 episodes? While i understand that it adepts the rest of arc 2 and there might not be much more storrywise i was hoping they would instead using the episode count to exclude less from the sourcematerial. ,-(
Yeah I was so upset about the 10 episode thing. But at this point I will take just about anything.
I know it is evil. But I really enjoy Johann digging his own grave. The second he made it clear Myne was his only client, his fate was sealed.
Very cool
The episode felt a bit fast for me, but I'm not surprised considering that the season will only be 10 episodes long. I just hope this will not be detrimental to the story later on in the season
Yeah I think this season will go at a breakneck pace, lol. But that means it will be action packed, too and that they will take their time at the end for the important scenes.
Yey, cant wait!!! 💯🤩
Effa still has twitchy crazy eyes... (when a eye is a little bit more closer than the other). I'm starting to thing they do that on purpose.
Poor naive Johann :)
I can't wait for his reaction to what happens next... :P
Can someone tell me what happened to the ink contract? Did she sell the rights and recipe for it or both?
@@michaelmiller7465 thank you for explaining it for me. I thought she's getting scammed or forced to sell cause the guilds saw that she can make ink.
@@TheChatteringMagpi Thank you!
you pick up thing that i would never notice
I know they packed a lot into this, but i personally feel it could have been 2 instead of 1. I have to wonder how much was editted out.
It skipped quite a lot lol. I'll end up covering quite a bit once I do the animes comparison to the LN
Yeap, I knew that green haired guy was sus!
Where do you watch? It doesn't appear to be on crunchy roll
It's on Crunchyroll! Unfortunately as of Spring Season they aren't letting us watch (the version with ads) like before, so it's behind the pay wall 😕

@@TheChatteringMagpi Ah! Thanks!
Fair enough, it's a story worth paying for ♡
dos anyone know if there going to be a dub for this season
No word yet 😞 I read somewhere it would be at least three months after it airs before we get dubs though.
@@TheChatteringMagpi at least we’re getting it dub also I love your videos
you can tell some of the animation is "conservative" i hope that is because they knew where they needed to put their time in (sylvester and spring prayer: )
also the opening having her run was funny to me, gotta enjoy that body strength while she has it neh?
I won't be able to put aside what I know about a certain green haired gray priest during this season. I shall be wishing him all manner of untimely ends, sadly we LN readers know what must come to pass.
So much backlogged anime this season, cant wait to watch this episode
Would you also review Spy x Family? Loid reminds me a lot of Ferdinand
I'm also watching Spy x Family.... so .... maybe?
Spoiler for the end of season 3:
All this family focus hits so much harder when you know what's going to happen.
I'm so confused because my crunchyroll app doesn't have this episode available. honestly if it wasn't for the hallairity of the book series "critical failures" that I've been reading i would be quite unhappy.
Wait... what??? It's there in mine. That sucks!!! (But also I see you let a name drop oh ho ho ho.... a good and funny book?)
God Dammit ! I missed my first comment award
There's always next time! I usually post on Twitter updates on my progress and also when the video will premiere so you can have an extra advantage 😆
I enjoyed it, Just a bit too heavy on the spoilers on what's to come.
True, but I warned peeps beforehand that there would be spoilers soooo.....
I was slightly bothered by the Benno/Freida scene. I just re-read the book not too long ago and their interaction was not nearly so hostile in the book. It made Benno seem far too petty. The chibi fight was amusing though.
Probably it's a first episode thing, where they exaggerated just for the laughs and also because everybody loves a good DIO 😆
Spoil me guys about Myne and ferdinand marriage😭,like If myne has a feeling for ferdinand?and what about lutz?
Funny you should ask. I made a video about this ruclips.net/video/VuMiLwSWAtg/видео.html
I do hope we get that 4th season and that we get the chance to see her growth!
Delia is posed as if she is confessing to the Archbishop. Like someone confessing sins to a priest. Thankfully it isnt anything gross. But I also am overall uncomfortable with the scene due to our knowledge of Delia originally being groomed by him.
Oh you forgott the "like and subscribe" lets hope the youtube robots dont push this down :(
Just for you, I will include it in the next video 😆
