This is one of my favorite episodes. I’ve shown it to my own students on occasion. When she pretends to be shocked at the grade just reinforced that teachers are human.

I had a teacher in fourth grade, Miss Dunne, who was one of those teachers that everyone was scared of. She was my favorite. She was tough but she was respected

Teachers just didn't go around murdering children. So please get down from that soap box. Because the lack of fear is why we are in this situation of the world as we speak. Humans are animals and live on the similar principles. Without fear you have an unruly society/community. Fear is what keeps you safe. These children have no fear, therefore they are unsafe and bad for the ecosystem. You remove the predator from the environment the prey runs a muck. Runs wild, screwing up the ecosystem by consuming everything in its wake. That's what happens when no predator is around to keep the prey in check.
I've commented on this clip before, but I have to say I love watching it. Sonia Braga was inspired casting for this part. She played Mrs. Westlake perfectly.

I had an english teacher who made us read Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I thought it was such a boring book but in later years I really grew to love it. You really leanred some hard life lessons and that what goes around comes around and Estella & Pip got the biggest slices of Humble Pie. Pip changed for the better, while Estella learned god don't like ugly.
Watching this made me think of a teacher I had in high school that had really tough tests. He had 4 tests every semester that were all 100 questions, all fill in the blank and essay questions. I nearly had a panic attack every time when I was studying for the tests.
Mrs. Westlake is one of those teachers who are exacting because she cares. Students need teachers like that. And there is a difference between being exacting and abusive. And you don't need corporal punishment to be exacting.

Mrs. Westlake was a sizzling hot teacher. She didn't play at all. I remember in the 7th grade Peary JHS Magnet. (They called it Junior high then) Ms. Hall had the entire class in check. If you breath wrong Ms. Hall would be on your case. She wore these high heels and dressed like she was a lawyer in a court room. Shortly, after I discovered Ms. Hall lived not too far from me.
I remember her story talking how she was surprised that in USA she's wasn't white, (in Brazil she's seem as white) and only discovered when it was announced as a Black Brazilian in the show.

She was brilliant as Mrs Westlake but that was bad direction . They should have made Theo wait until Mrs W had her hair already up and glasses on before looking with surprise . Still could not understand that they made Theo's maths teacher and husband dine in the kitchen .

Theo's character didn't seem genuine in this episode. Trying to be all serious and proper in front of Mrs. Westlake was overdone and unnatural. I think the real Theo would've loosened up a lot more once he realized how non-threatening she was.
@@melvinbridgewater4955 actually, being a teacher myself I've seen this. Kids get very nervous when their parents and teacher are in a room together, and they tend to become very buttoned up. Even the most boisterous class clown suddenly gets very shy when mom and dad are watching. They wrote this very well and accurately. Plus realizing that your teacher is a real person with a life is always jarring. ;-)
@@jonthomas8569 Yeah, when I was a kid I thought teachers lived at the school. By middle school I understood they had a life outside of school, but it was still weird to know that. I don’t think I accepted that teachers were human beings with their own lives and problems until 11th and 12th grade.
