I have a '93 Cobra that I bought new and started modifying at two days old. It still has the stock short block with ported Edelbrock heads and port matched intake, custom ground cam, and headers - and a Powerdyne supercharger that I added around 1996. This was a kit put out by Powerdyne specifically for the '93 Cobra that had a one piece billet lower pulley that combined the Cobra underdrive serpentine pulley with the blower drive pulley. It was a BD10 as delivered, but I sent it back in to Powerdyne for a BD11 upgrade when the BD10s started having bearing trouble. My experience with this blower is different than on this Lightning, the Cobra made 429 HP at the wheels on a Superflow dynamometer. Other 5.0 Mustangs at the time running the various Vortech blowers were putting out more HP and torque, but usually not that much more. My best time at the strip was an 11.81 at 119 mph. The car is still a lot of fun, even if the newer muscle cars can show it taillights.
Not to pick on you or the car. But even new diesel trucks can give it a run for its money now 400 horse power and 1,000 ft of torque just the weight holds them back. Btw is your cars color that mysti chrome ford had? love that color.

I ran that same supercharger on my 98 Jeep Grand Cherokee 5.2 because it was the only supercharger kit I could find that would fit my Jeep. It really woke up the stock engine. As people have pointed out it can't compete with other superchargers for racing but adds a ton of usable torque starting immediately off idle. The problem I found was the bearings need to be replaced too often because they don't get oil. Instead they are sealed with grease and can't handle the rpm needed to make power. So you either have to keep the rpm way down for reliability which limits power. Or you change the pulley to spin them faster in order to make power which causes premature bearing failure and more frequent bearing replacement. I finally removed the kit because i got tired of replacing the bearings every year.

That looks like a Powerdyne BD-11a supercharger. I had one of these on a 92 mustang and it was an internal belt driven supercharger. I'm intrigued though. In complete disagreement with you as well, though hoping to be persuaded otherwise.
Dunno, is this really a bad supercharger? I mean it picked up 70ft-lbs tq. in the mid-range, which makes sense because the heads don't flow a ton up high and the cam isn't ground for top end power. It's only a 6lb pully and there's some timing pulled out of it. It really makes sense to me, this isn't a high flowing engine. I wouldn't really say this was a bad supercharger, I'd say that this isn't a supercharger / engine / tune combination for somebody who likes to brag about peak numbers on a dyno sheet as if they mean something. This definitely would be felt if you were pulling a load - not that this was really designed to do so. I would say this could be modified in a reasonable manner to breathe a little better up-top and get those numbers a little more respectable. Not going to be a power-house, but still.
Koop It identified as a turbocharger. They failed to use the correct identifying pronoun in the video. Therefore it was triggered and called the Blower Police.
The Powerdynes were always junk. Vortech was the way to go on these if you wanted a bolt on kit. Most of the guys who wanted more went Procharger with custom brackets since they never made any for the truck, and that was only before turbos took the market. My 95 was an NA full exhaust, full bolts on, untouched long block and made 495whp 525wtq with a 150 shot BigShot GT40 plate kit and 245 356 with no juice. I always regret selling it, it was such a fun truck.
@@BigMikesGarage minor bolt ons would get them into the 13s just simple but effective mods. Stall, shift kit, intake exhaust etc they were running 13s trapping 100+. That isn't "a ton of mods" I think is how you put it.
I really hope this mr. Banks is mentoring a child or at least an employee. The amount of genius engineering and knowledge he has contributed to the world has been matched by very few people. If he were to retire today the entire automotive industry would be set back decades.
Thanks to banks for the gmc syclone. I never seen one in person but im amazed by the engineering that went into it. Even the drawing sketch looks like the modern 2000's gmc trucks.
Powerdyne is a good little blower. Picked up 75hp on a stock fox body. There is something really wrong with this truck. A centrifugal supercharger should never make the peak power RPM lower. Get it tuned properly and give the powerdyne a fair shot.
Cali If you treated them responsibly they were great STREET blowers. They were realistically only good for a 6lb kit. None of this 9 & 11lb BS. They were targeted at Vortech A-trims. They were never designed to compete with S-trims like many people try to. They were easy to install and maintain. Didn’t have to worry about running oil lines or anything. Once the db11 came out with the improved bearings they had virtually no problems if you left them alone. I have personal experience, on a SBE foxbody with a HCI it pushed the car to 11.9s on drag radials with a 1.9 60ft. It wasn’t a bad supercharger if you left it at 6lbs.
@@m.geisel I remember these blowers back in the day and many had issues with the internal belt and bearings. They were cheap for a reason. All the serious street racers were rocking S-Trims, none of them Powerdynes.
Cali They fixed the bearing issues the db10 had, hence the DB11. The key to what you said about street racers is that they weren’t meant for anything serious. They were inexpensive, relatively so, and made a low amount of boost. They weren’t designed to be anything fast. Just a low boost, low hp street blower
@@bankspower Hey Banks Power - we need the real important info - how tall is Gale? Does he need all that height to see further than the other turbo experts?
This era vehicle brings me back to my 1989 Pontiac sunbird Turbo. Had a distributor even. crank scraper, roller lifters multi port Injection. Muncie 5 speed. Stock. Really was untouchable on the street unless someone had a cyclone or a lot of money under the hood. Paid 2900 back then used. Now it would cost you about 30K to have as much fun.
Back in the day I owned a 94 lightning ,I installed a Vortech Supercharger A trim and I also installed 1.72 ratio rocker arms my truck went from running a 15.2 @ 89 miles an hour to a 13.40 @ 104 miles an hour with making 11 lb of boost. Back then the vortec was the best choice for these vehicles I don't know why anybody would install that piece of crap from Ford Motorsports. Using a mathematical formula were you take the weight of the truck some other factors and what it runs in the quarter mile and it factored out that the truck was making approximately 425 horsepower.
If you can find a guy named Mike, he had a shop in Las Vegas NV called Silver State Motorsports, he was do a lot with Lightnings with turbos getting some impressive #'s back in the day. He might have so info for you.
Why no curve? The peak numbers are really bad, my second car was a 2000 Saab 2.0 turbo with over 200.000km on it. Factory low pressure model turbo and over 200hp 300nm at the wheels, with a engine with less then half of the displacement.
wouldn't it be easy to move the timing up a few degrees and see if that helps. fords got their distributer right in the front where you don't need spelunking gear just to find the tightening bolt
Around 8:42 he claims that the production GMC Syclones came out in 1992 & 1993. That claim is incorrect. The Syclones were only made in 1991. GMC Typhoons were only made & available in 1992 & 1993. Now my all time favorite out of them, even though I'm more of a Typhoon fan, are without a doubt the Limited Edition (only 10 made, if I remember correctly) 1991 Marlboro Edition GMC Syclones! All red with white Marlboro markings & a "Corvette style" removable I-top.
All the guys out there that say the only thing that matters is "boost" might want to take note here, there is a lot more too it. Watch his supercharged gmc whipple vids too.
That's crazy. My Volkswagen 1.8t with minor bolt ons and a tune made 207 to the wheels through a 5mt. That's 5.8l with forced induction. That transmission must eat up a ton of power. Is the torque converter even locking up?
id put a snow kit on it it will help a lot not even a tune based one and if u do it right it can look like factory and in a pinch you can use a lower based fuel
Thats a Powerdyne blower. They were belt driven instead of gear drive. They never made much boost especially on a 351. Put a Vortech YSI on it. See if it makes any power.
Sounded like the belt was slipping. What was the boost up top ? That would explain low hp but high torque. Not defending the blower at all but it should have made more hp for sure
Everyone knows the peak HP and peak TQ numbers dropped to mid range RPM avgs because there wasn't a real Christmas tree in the bed. Thanks for the video:)
i hate to say it, but the worst superchargers ive ever seen were the TRD ones from the early 2000's. $2.5k-$5k and they usually only added about 20hp at the best. many underfueled the engine along with generating a ton of heat making them ping-monsters. some included injectors along with a reflash and this helped, but they still sucked.
It's a shame we can't get a new RCSB 2wd Chevy or GMC with just a 6.2L, a 6.6L L8T is just dreaming. I wish they would have sold the S10 and S15 with a TPI 350 V8 or later Sonoma/S10, Colorado/Canyon with the LS1/LQ4/LQ9/LS2. They sold some 5.3s but they were rare and low output.
Gale Banks strikes me as someone that would of been a doctor if he wasn’t into cars and trucks, ya know? He just seems to have that “doctor” demeanor about him.
I am curious to see how the Banks Idash 1.8 gauges are wired/installed in this vehicle. I have an older ford diesel that has no engine computer. Are these gauges somehow plumbed into that truck's engine computer? Or are the gauges working off of their own sensors? Thanks.
The iDash gauges are being fed by Banks Analog and Thermocouple modules. All the iDash needs is +12v/ground to operate. Here's a selection of modules and sensors. www.bankspower.com/c-70-products-idash-digital-monitor-idash-1-8-accessories.html
This is so cringey. Matt, do your research on that supercharger. Given the age, has the belt been replaced... ever? Belt slip in the housing will cause just that issue. Back in the day, I made over 400 rwhp with that same supercharger. Speaking of back in the day, that is on a Dynojet dyno, not a loaded Eddy current dyno like the one you ran the truck on. Not a good vid, guys.
How someone drives around a supercharged car without a manifold/boost gauge. Who knows. He may be experiencing dangerous manifold pressure (fast furious joke)
Correct, we have a suite of sensors that can be added to any vehicle, even if they do not have OBD-II. We have a page that shows the possibilities here: official.bankspower.com/tech_article/whats-going-on-in-my-engine-and-how-do-i-know/
What's happened here is that is a stupid plenum for a truck... you've increased the velocity without increasing valve or air in the heads... So basically it's mimicking the APPROPRIATE long runner truck plenum with dual throttle bodies. The velocity increase is evident in 70 ft lbs ( respectable gain ) and that it lowered your PEAKS JUST AS SPACERS OR ANYTHING LENGTHENING THE RUNNERS WOULD DO TO INCREASE LOW END BY WAY OF VELOCITY. I have a BD11A ( same unit basically ) rebuilt with just standard stuff and A trim... going in an E-150 with the proper truck 5.0 that's been completely ported to where my runners can flow near 280 cfm each. The difference is my cam is a .496 lift and 291 duration adv on exhaust. or near a 400 HP 5.0 N/A. @ 6 psi I've calculated my stall speed will be at 500 ft lbs plus running water / meth injection. So I've mixed a higher duration cam with the torque of a long runner even spacers though I dont think my 1" phenolic spacer will clear. I will more than most likely see those 500 hp results with only 6 psi depending on how the plenum volume takes the boost or if I have to upgrade the trim level understandably ... i really just wanted to push over 400 but either way... I've seen in recent times BD11a go on Mustangs with 340 HP crate engines... run the A trim 2.93" "6 psi" pulley and make 420 rwhp. So there's no way you can title this as "the worst supercharger" . I understand that's the point of the question mark but it seems more like a propaganda video to sell something and another assault on the wallets of blue collar builders who can only afford a $1000 or such blower only unit . and I get that this is a commercial channel and all but come on... you're kind of ruining it ... or maybe just making these units available cheaper but then you can't find Volutes anywhere or drives up the cost of the rarity for people to sell larger trim volutes and impellers.
Making a twin I beam truck handle is very hard, its "ok" offroad on the road it does not keep up ifs on a c10 or s10. Best of luck... i hope the ford can win.
I don’t know about that... my 94 Ranger Splash with twin I beams handled quite well... I don’t think making it handle is all that hard... making it handle without chewing the insides off the front tires as a daily driver might be harder to achieve 👍😂
Since the supercharger is offset (not sitting on top of the intake manifold), is it possible to drive it with an electric motor instead of the belt? That should allow the crankshaft to send more power to the drivetrain?
Needs a big electric motor, which means a big battery bank and a speed controller that can work with the ecu/tps. It takes a certain amount of work to compress that air charge, whether that energy is from exhaust backpressure, the crank, or elsewhere.

I really hate being this much of a dick, I'm just particularly curious what you had in mind when you made that statement, if there's any way you can remember. I know it's been way too long now...
That guy needs to stop talking and listen! Banks is a legend and doesn't need his input.
Matt's a sharp guy who is personable. Proud to have met and shaken his hand.
Was this re-uploaded because of the new you-tube policy? Was the supercharger's feelings hurt?
Koop It identified as a turbocharger. They failed to use the correct identifying pronoun in the video. Therefore it was triggered and called the Blower Police.
You're not allowed to disparage blowers anymore.
youtube censors americans now.
@@kbtube8125 censors are meant for you KBtube was a bad name to start so maybe have some personal responsibility
@@kbtube8125 So how did you watch this and get the privilege to watch it and complain?
Gale calling that truck a critter absolutely made my day
My Suburban once had a Paxton S/N 95 supercharger. Did help very little.
Formerly owned by Bob Petersen of HotRod.
Holy crap just slap that alky on there already. Whew! Great to see this guy in action. Never lose the live of talking engines.
Most of the lightnings i ever ran into at the drag strip were running 11s and 12s back in the day.
Not even close. They were mid 15 second trucks stock and high 13's with a lot of mods.
@@BigMikesGarage didnt say they were stock.. just saying it was frustrating driving a trans am sports car getting beat by trucks lol
@@BigMikesGarage minor bolt ons would get them into the 13s just simple but effective mods. Stall, shift kit, intake exhaust etc they were running 13s trapping 100+. That isn't "a ton of mods" I think is how you put it.
I wonder how the truck would do with a real cold air setup and not drawing in under hood temp air
I really hope this mr. Banks is mentoring a child or at least an employee. The amount of genius engineering and knowledge he has contributed to the world has been matched by very few people. If he were to retire today the entire automotive industry would be set back decades.
Banks is family company. Gales daughter, son-in-law, and grandson all work here. 👍🏻
damn that is the best pillar pod i have ever seen for a OBS ford would love to get one
Many high-end car audio shops can do fiberglass work like Matt's pillar.
Thanks to banks for the gmc syclone. I never seen one in person but im amazed by the engineering that went into it. Even the drawing sketch looks like the modern 2000's gmc trucks.
What a cool truck. I think I want one!
Powerdyne is a good little blower. Picked up 75hp on a stock fox body. There is something really wrong with this truck. A centrifugal supercharger should never make the peak power RPM lower. Get it tuned properly and give the powerdyne a fair shot.
Powerdynes suck! But I agree it should make more power with a proper tune.
@@m.geisel When you say "DB" I'm thinking is this guy talking about an Aston Marton. LOL You mean BD-10 and BD-11.
If I had the money I would go to Banks for all my vehicle needs. America needs more men like him.
Hey, we're not that expensive! haha. Thanks for the love.
@@bankspower My pleasure, thanks for the videos and taking pride in your work!
The history and stories in this video were awesome, thank you for sharing.
I've got a powerdyne on an 89 sho. It's not the Fastest thing in the world but it sure is fun and it's drivable.
It was irritating to watch Matt continually talk over or interrupt Mr. Banks. Matt needs to learn to shut up and listen ALOT more.
And the guy didn't have any specifics ready for Mr. Banks. It's all... probably, I think, around... So much patience, Mr. Banks.
Wow a old school powerdyne. Seems like these carb blowers from the 90s are juat heat pumps that wine. Crazy it retards the timing that much.
If you can find a guy named Mike, he had a shop in Las Vegas NV called Silver State Motorsports, he was do a lot with Lightnings with turbos getting some impressive #'s back in the day. He might have so info for you.
Mas air was available on the f150s after 94 on the 302/300 ci motors with auto trans .
Love the idea of finding the true numbers of horsepower and torque
Why no curve?
The peak numbers are really bad, my second car was a 2000 Saab 2.0 turbo with over 200.000km on it.
Factory low pressure model turbo and over 200hp 300nm at the wheels, with a engine with less then half of the displacement.
HOW HAVE I NEVER WATCHED ANY BANKS POWER VIDEOS? WTF.
wouldn't it be easy to move the timing up a few degrees and see if that helps. fords got their distributer right in the front where you don't need spelunking gear just to find the tightening bolt
G'day,,air temp can be reduce by water injection,,this will give you your desired air density,,
and will solve detonation problem,,
Around 8:42 he claims that the production GMC Syclones came out in 1992 & 1993.
13:10 demonetized!
Love the lightning clean
I would really like to see more on this truck!
That's crazy. My Volkswagen 1.8t with minor bolt ons and a tune made 207 to the wheels through a 5mt. That's 5.8l with forced induction. That transmission must eat up a ton of power. Is the torque converter even locking up?
If I recall correctly it's the bd11a (powerdyne) old school SC
240hp @4200 and 330tq @3200 stock
id put a snow kit on it it will help a lot not even a tune based one and if u do it right it can look like factory and in a pinch you can use a lower based fuel
Banks is a wealth of information and I watch whenever I see him in a video. I have never noticed, is he a giant man or is the host just a tiny dude?
Andrew Underwood if you look at mr banks next to the truck he is a giant and the host is normal sized
Next episode should be ignition timing system upgrade and methanol injection, that will make that HP peak wake up.
being face to face with mr. banks is like facing the headmaster at highschool when you knew you screwed up.
Thats a Powerdyne blower. They were belt driven instead of gear drive. They never made much boost especially on a 351.
Put a Vortech YSI on it. See if it makes any power.
Had a Powerdyne on my fox body Mustang. Nice, quiet setup but not a lot of HP.
Sounded like the belt was slipping. What was the boost up top ? That would explain low hp but high torque. Not defending the blower at all but it should have made more hp for sure
That’s Jack in the bean stalk and the giant
I really wanted to see them do something with this, but I couldn't ever find anything else.
So the charger made the power sooner than later?
So air density is basically the weight of the air, not necessarily the amount, correct?
When are you gonna finish this little project???
Water meth with some e85 would let you get that timing back.
Everyone knows the peak HP and peak TQ numbers dropped to mid range RPM avgs because there wasn't a real Christmas tree in the bed.
Thanks for the video:)
No 93 octane fuel? I'm staying in Wisconsin! 😯
i hate to say it, but the worst superchargers ive ever seen were the TRD ones from the early 2000's. $2.5k-$5k and they usually only added about 20hp at the best. many underfueled the engine along with generating a ton of heat making them ping-monsters. some included injectors along with a reflash and this helped, but they still sucked.
That A pilar pod is awesome! Is that a custom piece?
IDK man Banks makes that f150 look like a ranger lol.
Gale you are the master. Please lower your prices on the older motor home headers for us workin stiffs.
I love that Gale has a soft spot for S10's. me too. his record diesel truck was an s10? right?
Dodge Dakota with Cummins !
Gale Banks strikes me as someone that would of been a doctor if he wasn’t into cars and trucks, ya know? He just seems to have that “doctor” demeanor about him.
I think if you took the charger off you find the engine is smoked and needs a rebuild
I've always wanted one of these, and a Ford nite
A lightning and a nite bronco
This is so cringey. Matt, do your research on that supercharger. Given the age, has the belt been replaced... ever? Belt slip in the housing will cause just that issue. Back in the day, I made over 400 rwhp with that same supercharger. Speaking of back in the day, that is on a Dynojet dyno, not a loaded Eddy current dyno like the one you ran the truck on. Not a good vid, guys.
My vote, Gale and Jay on a future episode!
I bet the supercharger is unable to keep up with airflow demand past midrange and begins to pull vacuum up top..
How someone drives around a supercharged car without a manifold/boost gauge.
Who knows. He may be experiencing dangerous manifold pressure (fast furious joke)
How did you get the Banks iDash to work without OBD2 on that truck? Ir is it a matter of just adding sensors?
When do we get the next exciting chapter? I'm hooked!!!
Bank Sir, did you not test a supercharger for GM? once that netted zero increase? and this is "still worse"? Ford let us ALL down with that one?
Glad these guys at least do real world dynos with the hood down
Man I kept thinking that guy was jackvale
TRUCKSHOW PODCAST !!!!!!!
Worst is trying to eliminate bumpsteer... its really hard when the tie rods follow different arcs compared to the suspension.
@@jdhill770 Yep... need to respect the laws of physics. The electric turbo would be basically somewhat like building a hybrid.
