  • Howard Zane shows us how he pastel weathered this Akane Brass HO scale Allegheny. This was his first attempt using pastels vs airbrushing a brass locomotive so this IS NOT an instructional video. Do so at your own risk. The end result in this case was quite impressive so enjoy the video. If you have a locomotive or brass piece you would like weathered or painted contact Tommy Gilbert at Tommy Gilberts Hobby Shop 717 4768589 as I do not offer locomotive weathering at this time.

Great work! It is a pleasure to watch this video. I've got two Rivarossi's Alleghenys and one of them is weathered. They are very good runners.

I do all of my weathering with water mixable artist oil paints in the earth tones from black all the way to white. it allows me to make a series of colors that a real steam locomotive would acquire from running on the tracks for many years of operation. I more or less follow what Juan Zuloaga and Jerry Spoelma at The Whistle Stop do for weathering. They've been a really big help in getting me to understand how to apply the weathering and use colored photos for reference.

Stunning work. I really like the graphite use. What brand of pastels is Mr Zane using?

What colors would you recommend to buy and use for weathering? By the way, am not going to attempt to paint the Brass Loco I got from you, keeping it just the way it is.

@politicsandtrains I would use the brand Pan Pastels like in the video .they come in sets .black ,Grey's ,rust ,burnt umber off white or a color like light concrete, brown also a variety. Graphite to weather the boiler

Are you weathering a brass H8? I think God will punish you for even thinking about that.
