I just won an auction which has one of the Compal JAX-10 variants of this. Will be going through a similar journey on that once it arrives, assuming it's otherwise functional.

Never heeard of this little computer before. Something about classic UMPCs that I just love. I wonder how it'd do with Desktop Linux? Not sure what would work well with 512MB RAM, but It'd be cool to see

i bought one and only tiny core 14 works (no wifi, no touch screen) but with a USB docking (targus dock121) and ethernet i manage to install filezilla, icecat and somo other packages i think it could be a interesting mini server

This is the best video resource I've found on this topic. Thanks - I'm wanting to get *linux* on mine, so different battle, but could I bother you for all files and links that you've collected? It would save me time finding drivers and give me a head start.

I put together most of the resources that I used into one file as a sort of tutorial you can download here:
fastupload.io/TxbcWqz5jo2c7lT/file Unfortunately, this is probably not everything because my organization is terrible, but it's pretty much everything I used for this video. Hope this helps!

Thanks. Ignore my other comment. Derp. So I'm having some success with NetBSD and Slackware on this device. I've found a ton of firmware and drivers, both win XP and midinux, but haven't flashed the firmware yet. (Kudos on the 3.5" drive - I have one so I might do the same!)
Puppylinux, slacko edition, works too. I'll be making a video soon about these!

I'd love to see a video on installing another Linux distro on this device. I'm curious as to what modern distro could even be installed on it given it's only got 2GB RAM and 2GB of internal storage.

Curious to know if you plan to do a tutorial for a version of Linux as well, pretty clueless when it comes to Linux so in trying to get a version to work I’ve just been kinda stumbling around lol

Sometime flashing the Bios improve the overall experience, i have the Honk Kong version of this device and i have worked hoirs and hours on it. So far the Windows Xp os has been the best on it. Forget Linux has you will get drivers issues.

I had some issues on the way. My formula was to make live bootable Gparted, reformat internal drives of Itelc Idol to FAT32(I found 2 drives, with 2gb each. So watchout for freespace of WinXP after installation).
When formatting internal drives is finished, then run WinXP installation from external DVD rom.(Good to jave some writable DVDs laying around. Tried USB winXP install, but got EULA error message).
I did not need to use BartPE
(But BartPE/WinPE is still nice to have knowledge about. Really powerful tools that can be customized for your needs).
After WinXP was installed, i just followed the rest of his guide. If you have old floppies, you might have to reformat them more than once before using the flashing tool. I got a lot of error during making the floppy, tried many other floppies. After formatting it(Not Quick) in Windows 10 like 5 times, made BIOS flash boot Floppy with no error messages. Copied over BIOS roms, and booted and flashed fine from my external floppy drive.
When it comes to the touch pen, I had issue with callibration. I simply had to push very hard up in the corner.
Device is working fine. Very happy. Good luck. And big thanks! to the content creator of this channel for making this nive video. Might not have done this at all, if not seen this.
