This feels like a bunch of them got together at an Oscar’s afterparty one night, and in a drunken stupor were just like “what if ALL of us made a movie?”
If you look at the character posters they distinguish between humans and Barbies (a species that apparently includes her friends and family?)... combined with the Real World road sign, I wonder if this suggests some kind of Pinocchio story concerning the manufactured nature of the Barbie World.
I believe so, the leaked pictures from when they were filming showed Margot and Ryan in these gaudy neon clothes surrounded by regular people in regular locations, seems the main plot is they go to the real world for some reason Hell if you look at Kate McKinnon’s poster it looks like she’s playing a broken Barbie who’s kid drew on her, cut her hair, ruined her dress then broke the joints in her legs so she’s always doing the splits so there is probably a fake world and real world colliding narrative
The truth is, almost all of the animated Barbie movies (which are more, fantails featuring Barbie as an actress) are well voiced, written and directed. Company has standards. Also half the movies have queer readings
From what I've read, the plot concerns the Margot Robbie Barbie being kicked out of Barbie Land after having some form of nervous breakdown over her existence as a Barbie, which to me sounds like it's going to explore the expectations placed upon these archetypes of femininity... also, if you look at the character posters which were also released by Warner, they present a lot of Barbies, each with a different profession, but they present the Kens as "he's just Ken" or "he's also Ken", which I think will also play into the satirical look at the idea of Barbie. I'm excited for this, not just because it's a Greta Gerwig film (Lady Bird is one of my favorite coming-of-age comedies of the last ten years, and while I had some structural issues with it, I did adore a lot of her take on Little Women), but because she co-wrote the script with her partner Noah Baumbach (who wrote and directed Marriage Story and The Squid and the Whale... he also co-wrote Fantastic Mr. Fox with Wes Anderson), and I think that combination will give this film a very potent satirical bite. I also think Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling are perfectly cast.
I am excited about this. I was such a Barbie kid! This feels very much like how a kid in the '80s or '90s would play with them. I hope this is in the same vein as the Lego Movie! There's definitely a lot of adult/meta humor here. I look forward to catching as many of the easter eggs as I possibly can!
this movie looks so fun! I know movies have been going more serious lately and I think it's a little sad, but I am definitely gonna watch it in theaters.
I immediately mentally booked my ticket when I saw her stepping out of the shoes. That’s such a golden BARBIE thing and I had the same reaction as you. As for plot, considering Barbie’s driving towards a ”real world this way” sign, plus being sad/sighing at Ken following her, all signs points to her leaving Barbieland and entering the real world. Will Ferrel’s clip looks like a business meeting board, my question is if they’ll go meta enough to make it a Mattell meeting board.
I think that based on the trailer they might go the enchanted route to visit the "real" world. With the travel where Ken popped into the car unexpectedly.
That’s what I think too. I hope they spend a fair amount of time in the Barbie world because that part looks very funny and we haven’t seen anything from them in the “real world.” It could fall flat once they get there. Or it could have real Elf energy. I’m definitely going to see it. It seems like my kind of thing.
I am genuinely so intrigued by this movie. The huge cast, the very unique style it's giving and I'm intrigued to see what the plot is. My guess is better maybe realising she's not "real" then trying to find her way here, ultimately landing in the conclusion of realising self worth. That's legit just need on the car bit and I'm intrigued to see what exactly the plot ends up being, however close or far I am.
LOL Michael Cera. First time watching the trailer too! Glad I got to watch it with you! 😊 Not sure how it’s going to play out, but totally excited to watch something silly and visually pleasing lol
My only gripe here is that I'm not seeing any of Barbie's family in the credits. Skipper, Stacie, Todd, Tutti, Kelly/Chelsea, Francie, Jazzie. There's also no Courtney (Skipper's best friend). None of the family or friends I grew up with Barbie and Ken having, except Gloria, Midge and Allan are there.
Isn't this movie the reason Ncuti Gatwa wasn't available to play the Doctor in time for the 60th Anniversary? This trailer aside, that also makes me curious: for the _Doctor Who_ connection. Also, I'm getting "Beach Party" movie vibes (the ones with Annette Funicello, from the 1960s), so maybe the plot will be a parody of those films.
I have to say that your reaction while watching it was almost identical to mine. I just keep think, "What is this movie?!" No idea if I'll watch it, but it looks interesting if nothing else.
It seems the answer to the big question of plot is already seen in the trailer itself. Barbie is driving past a sign that says Real World This Way. It would seem to be YET ANOTHER cartoon/magical/game/fiction character visits "Reality" and gets a nasty surprise and rude awakening. Barbie will likely dump Ken cause he's so fake and will either stay in the real world or go back to Barbie World and change it to be "better". Who's gonna take bets on this?
I believe there is going to be a trailer coming with maybe more plot. Because this was labeled as Teaser Trailer 2. I know the plot was originally going to be about Barbie being kicked out of Barbieland for her perceived flaws. But it’s likely been re-written since then. I did read somewhere she was still leaving Barbieland but maybe by choice now.
The impression it gives me is off 2 young kids playing with Barbie dolls in real life. The actions of some of the characters, the not knowing what they’re doing about when stopping over (i.e. no idea about sex). Think it’ll be a bit like the Lego movie in the sense that’s it’s a kid in the real world playing with these with Will Ferrell once again being one of the outside figures.
It certainly looks like a fun movie, even if we can’t get a sense of the substance of the film. The cast is bonkers for who they got and how they get to play with the archetypes of each iteration of Barbie and Ken. I’m intrigued
Somewhere (I don’t remembered where) I read that then plot is that in Barbieland the women rules because all the professions and Ken only be ken, and Barbie want to meet the real world so when they came here (ken tag along) Barbie is very surprised and terrified because here the men rules, and Ken wants to transform Barbieland into Kenland. In hear is very heavy in gender politics in a very satirical way.
This movie looks like it might manage to walk the fine line of being humorous enough for adults while being innocent enough for children. I might actually watch it and I’m a grown woman over forty.
Everything I've seen about this movie makes me feel like it was made especially for me. I am a lifelong Barbie collector, and my favorite movie of all time is _2001: A Space Odyssey,_ but I also love self-aware silly movies like _Spice World_ and _Romy & Michele's High School Reunion._ But I'm also cognizant of the fact that an amazing cast and an acclaimed director don't automatically guarantee a successful end result. I look no further than _Babylon_ to demonstrate that a movie can still go very, very off the rails in spite of having all the right elements on paper.
Greta Gerwig writing/directing it had never sold before any trailers or posters came out. Plus Hari Neff, a trans woman, is playing one of the barbies which is beyond awesome.
The scale of her car! I wonder if Will Ferrell is reprising his Lego Movie role? Anyway, since Barbie is driving to "the Real World", most of this trailer stuff might just be in the beginning (and end?) of the movie?

I just hope if thats the case that the story and the message are unique enough to make it standing out, bacause its look like a lot of love is put in the movie and a lot of talent is behind it.
Will Ferrell is playing "Mattel CEO" so I'm assuming the two lead Barbie & Ken leave Barbie World and enter the real world... And maybe confront Mattel?
From what I can glean from Ryan’s interviews, it seems like Barbie and Ken are going to the real world, so Barbie’s gonna inevitably face misogyny… and I have a feeling Ken won’t like that.
I am worried that the 'real world' thing will turn it into all of the modern 'oh look this fictional character popped into our reality how wacky!' boring corporate movies, but I'm going to stay hopeful given the people that are involved with it.
