    I like how they have to advertise how fast the electric truck is going lol. It's like every EV has to show it off, even though it doesn't make sense for a work truck.

    I love the way these asutonomous vehicle masnufacturers use the words "for greater safety" but what they really mean is "for greater profits" at the expense of drivers and their families. They will start off with a "humen safety driver" - (who will presumably sit in the cab all day bored shitless) until enough miles have been done to prove the autonomous driving capability and then the mining companies will sack hundreds of workers and run the trucks without drivers.

      We have a whole range of different types of trucks running around on our roads. Here in Melbourne we have not just B-Doubles which are 1.5 semi trailers long with double articulation, capable of carrying a 20 ft and a 40 ft container. We also have the more recently introduced double semi-trailer combinations. These can carry a 40 ft container on each trailer chassis. They come in two different varieties, one with fifth wheel turntables like the middle unit of a B-Double, and the other as a semi-trailer and dog combination.
      The trailers carry notices saying PBS Approved Vehicle and if you google that you can find more information on the website about the various combinations of vehicles that are allowed on Australian roads.

    You notice there weren't any cost comparisons between the electric truck and a similar diesel powered truck? That rapid charger probably costs twice as much to charge the truck than the diesel fuel would,plus rapid charging degrades batteries at least twice as much as standard charging. The heat produced by these batteries under maximum loads would be significantly higher than a diesel. The cost of replacing these batteries is probably higher than a new engine,and for sure will have to done at least 10 times before a similar diesel powered unit would need replacing.
    A Tesla gets about 4 years outta it's batteries and they cost approximately $20,000 to replace. I imagine this trucks batteries would be a whole hell of a lot more!
    Add the fact that the production of batteries has a carbon footprint about 6 times that of the internal combustion engines for at least a year of the proposed use of the batteries.
    They just can't make an all electric vehicle that's as efficient as an internal combustion engine in the long run. They are gonna have to reinvent the batteries to do this. Battery technology just ain't up for it!
    The way to go is "hybrids" diesel electric,or natural gas or whatever/electric. It's a long proven concept with all the bugs worked out already. They seem to forget that.
    Although,for general car usage,the hybrid is only effective if you drive long uninterrupted distances. Trying to use one for regular day to day city driving, they're less efficient than normal vehicles.

      I have never heard of a Tesla battery needed to be replaced after 4 years, where did you get that information? I am not a Tesla owner or fan boy but I am just curious.

      They are designed to last over 1500 charging cycles, and are designed to get 300000 to 500000 miles before replacement.

      Well your 1500 cycle number sounds about right,but the 3 to 5 hundred thousand numbers are completely out of the realm of possibility. The mileage per cycle isn't anywhere near those totals.
      Anyway I heard the average durability of the batteries on one of those car magazine TV shows. Car and driver etc. One of those. Even if they last 10 years that's still barely into the mileage range you've stated.

      I have heard the average model 3 gets 400 miles per charge. If the battery can last for 1500 charges would that not be 1500 x 400 miles = 600 000 miles. Unless I am doing the math wrong. Even so, I average about 1500 a year on gas and keep a car for 10 years. If you add up 1500 a year over 10 years that would equal, that would equal 15000 and I heard a replacement battery is around 8000, you would still come out ahead. If I could buy an electric car I would. I do mostly city driving and only average around 200 - 300kms a week. If I had a Tesla Model 3, or some other brand I would have to only charge about every week or two. If you haul or tow, work with your vehicle, have a long commute, or go on long trips they are mot worth it but most city people would be able to electric no problem. And really that's where you will notice the biggest change in stuff like air quality, is in the city. Especially during heavy traffic when you have thousands of cars idling, barley moving. I think once you can get a decently equipped electric car for around 25 000 to 35 000 that will be a game changer. In a perfect world I would love to have an electric car to do all my boring/city driving and a petrol sports car I could take out on the weekend.

      I must have dropped a decimal point! Sorry. In your situation that sounds ideal,but I drive at least 54 miles a day just straight to and from work. That's not counting any running I have to do. Just wouldn't be for me. The show I saw about them was years ago when they were just coming out,and they were getting about 150 miles a charge some of the other brands that were out were only getting about 75 miles.
      You also have take into account that the Teslas use lithium based batteries and they are notorious for bursting into flames/ exploding if they are penetrated. Plus the disposal charge is considerably higher than for a lead acid car battery. Most places give you money off for your old battery,they can make pretty good money recycling the lead etc.
      To me,they're just not to the point where they can replace an internal combustion engine in any amount to make an overall affect,to justify the expenses. Something else I've never heard is how much does it add to your electric bill to charge them,plus the expense of installing the charge system in your home. Because they don't charge off 110 or 220 house current. I'm pretty sure you need a step up transformer to get back up to the voltage required.
      Like I say,I'm no expert at all just read a lot.

    Seems like they could do more with a railway system instead of the large road trains. Less wear and tear on the roads, less tires to buy and 425 tons per three truck setup is maybe 4 rail cars worth.

      And who's going to pay for that expensive infrastructure? We're talking billions in investment here. Only the government can sponsor such a project, but why would they? Those dirt roads you saw there in the video are private and those prototypes are not allowed to drive on public roads.

    EV's will always out perform petro units until you have to recharge them. Electric motors have a lot more torque, smoother power and a superior motors, that is why locomotives are all electric drives. The problem is charging

      - which is why diesel electric haul trucks have been around for quite a long time (limited market penetration) , the torque of electric without the recharging, or battery issues of a pure EV (300-500kWh of Batteries per vehicle are still logistically and economically challenging)... Kyoto, Paris and Glasgow all caught up with the corporate marketing people. Now everyone is having a go at Pure EV. the experiment rolls on.
