    We start lambing in 5 weeks, i am a 1 man band but my wife makes sure there is always food on the table and she is a godsend for that. Everything lambs outside (450) as we have no sheds so we are in the hands of the gods with the weather. I generally find it either starts bad and ends good or starts good and ends bad. Have you tried giving every lamb a probiotic at birth? Hope it gets better for you.

    Hope your animals turn the corner soon James, and yourself and the family stay well. No need for apologies, it’s a tough time of year for many farmers and that’s after a very poor years weather. You can only do your best, and I appreciate the videos and the extra effort it takes to film and talk and edit on top of the everyday hardships of farming. (Especially with the sheep).

    I don’t know why people would complain. I think it’s great that you explain everything to a tee. It’s just some people love to grumble. If you didn’t explain then they would complain about that. Just keep doing what you’re doing.

    I am thinking that perhaps the feed is inadequate to produce good colostrum. The iodine precaution only prevents joint ill. I had terrible problems until I found a reliable, well balanced feed with 5% bypass protein. I was lucky enough to have a partner whose thing was not lambing but he was a great help with thoroughly cleaning out the pens, bedding up and feeding. Being on your own must be difficult for you. Another thing I did was invite interested youngsters to give a hand. That didn’t always work out with the odd one who thought helping involved standing around with a clip board. I know I would have been exhausted trying to run a channel as well.

    Keep your spirit up James. It's hard working on your own. Your doing a grand job through tough conditions. You give great detail in your videos. I thought we had a lot of rain up in the Isle of Lewis but you Irish boys have hard a hard winter.

    James dont apologise, your a busy man with the added work and hardship associated with a blanket condition like watery mouth . I hope things take a turn for the better soon for you, as for farming high up we are the same and we feel if you have the space to keep them in , they are always a day stronger when they go out.If youcan get some dairy teat wipes ,clean the elder before a lamb sucks and if you can try and tube them 75mls of colostrum if you can .good luck man and yes you do have great stock .

    Spectam is very good at preventing watery mouth if you can get it. A couple of squirts of it orally after being born. I also find 40ml of liquid paraffin to a watery mouth lamb really helps them. Just some suggestions I hope could help.

    We used Trymox LA on all our new borns last year and didn't have any watery mouth at all. Just one mil under the skin did the job as they were born, we didn't have any joint I'll either, so a good result. It's such a shame they banned Spectam.
    Ask your vet what he thinks about the Trymox.
    Good luck. I think we are all struggling with this weather and nowhere to put lbs at the moment.

  • @vwvw4
    @vwvw4 7 месяцев назад +2

    I think considering you have sporadic watery mouth, you should prophylactically inject every lamb with antibiotic as soon as they are born. It would be also worthwhile to give EVERY lamb a feed of reconstituted powdered lamb colostrum within the first 2 hours of birth. Your ewes look to be in very good condition and a thin ewe wouldn't cause watery mouth, but poor colostrum production by the ewe is likely the issue. Perhaps use the word fresh instead of sick for a ewe starting to lamb. Condolences on the loss of your Aunt. You are so lucky to have your sheds! Maybe get Cammy to scan your ewes, if you can get a group of shepherds in your area it would be worth the ferry/drive for him.. You can lose a ewe just as easily as the lamb when your scanning is off. Why isn't your Dad helping you?

    • @jamesfox5245
      @jamesfox5245 7 месяцев назад

      We are injecting every lamb as born. Colostrum is probably the problem alright. Il have to get it tested.

    You can buy a bottle of spectam if you see the lamds getting watery mouth or if a lamb has it give them 1ml or a 1ml and a half and it'll clear them or even better if you can get a spectam squirt bottle and give it to every lamb born but 99% sure its gone of the market

      Lambing outdoors is great in good weather but giving our wet climate in Ireland ,you need them indoors , aye mules are absolutely fantastic mothers , easily lambed to anything, but too many triplets and we found 3 crops were enough as after that they put everything into the lambs with many not getting up after lambing and with limited milk , wouldn like to face that outside on a wet morning.Good luck
