@joseluismunoz470 usually there are rules against secondary accounts, even in the discord servers themselves. while I agree that the TO's response was maybe a bit too much unless the rules stated that exactly that is the response to secondarty accounts and that they didn't explain the reasoning well at all I understand that you have to punish that behaviour to keep your community a nice place (and it seems to be a nice place with the responses jordan showed in the video)

People get salty when high skilled players pretend to be lower skilled players. There's a lot of valid reasons to do so, like trying to practice new characters without it being attached to your image or so people don't find out who you're bringing to the next big tournament. That being said it can make some people really angry, probably because they don't actually play each opponent like they're worthy of their best effort and get shocked when someone pretends to be bad smh

To be fair, it’s not smurfing when you are facing the same level of competition. Smurfing is when you deliberately alter your rank to verse lower skilled players for easy matches. But you literally cannot “Smurf” in a tournament with no prerequisites. Since you are not bypassing anything to begin with.

I don't come from a fighting game background, I play mostly tcgs so it's probably a bit different, but when my friends and I play games like yugioh, we always give it our best from deckbuilding to the actual games. We only play casually and it's all in good fun, but we also want to push each other to get better. Personally I'd feel offended if the person I was up against wasn't giving their best, even if I'm at a disadvantage. Otherwise how am I going to learn and get better?

Smurfing makes a difference in a seeded tournament. It could lead certain players to underperform or overperform because he wanted to mess with the bracket. Should he have gotten banned? Probably not. But saying what he did was inconsequential is being disingenuous.

I don't know how it works in smash tournaments but in most tournaments the lowest seed goes against the strongest players, so if it works like that in smash too then it would achieve the opposite effect of smurfing
@div1_gambler glad too see someone else say this. there really isnt such a thing as smurfing in a seeded open tourney. Its not like smurfing in elite where you will only get matched against weak players, being low seeded means youll face high seeds early on in bracket.

@Sizzyl Maybe? I know it primarily as a term for someone subverting the system to play against lower-rank players, be it by making a new account or intentionally losing matches to lower their main account's rank.
Even if they intended it as simply using an alt account, "smurf" is almost exclusively used as a term for accusing someone of doing something wrong (IE, subverting systems to play unfair matches against lower ranks). Simply making an alt account isn't necessarily wrong, and you can just simply say "alt" instead of "smurf" if it's not meant to be accusatory.

I don't play smash at all, but I assume it's referencing the Power Rankings system the community uses to rank players in given regions/countries.
People should be able to act as whatever gender they want online as long as there's no catfishing involved. Those who get up in arms about it like the TO create a rigid environment where everyone is afraid of having to prove they are what they say they are. It sets a bad precedent because someone could be banned if they don't fit the TO's definition of a "real woman." Especially if someone is genderfluid and doesn't always identify as a woman. If nobody cared what gender people are it wouldn't be an issue. The ban for smurfing sure, if that's against the rules that's fine. But for the TO to say it's "really really f'ing weird" to "impersonate a woman" is unprofessional and it's not their place to police people's gender.
