  • When applying for a Temporary Resident CARD by reason of Family Unity in Mexico, you must have several supporting documents with you, such as:
    A Mexico Visa Application Form, printed and signed. If the applicant is a minor, the parents or legal guardians have to sign the application form.
    A passport or other travel document, which has blank pages so the visa can be affixed.
    A valid FMM (forma migratoria multiple)
    Proof of family relationship (marriage certificate, birth certificate, apostilled if foreign-issued, also translated by a perito traductor with their attestation forms and seals
    If using Mexican birth or marriage certificate, it must be a certified copy with a QR or bar code - this can be obtained at the goverment run kiosk or office
    Any additional documents that the Mexican embassy asks you to provide.
    COPIES OF EVERYTHING
    You apply ONLINE for a Temporary Residence Card at the National Immigration Institute (Instituto Nacional de Migracion (INM)) website:
    www.gob.mx/tra...
    Complete tramite (application procedure) online but do not sign the documents themselves. You will do this in person at the INM office.
    Collect the required documents. See the requirements for a Mexico Temporary Resident Visa below.
    Submit the application, print out copies
    PAY your fees by printing out the invoices from this website: www.inm.gob.mx...
    Take these Pago de Derechos to any major Mexican bank and pay them in CASH, obtain receipts and make photocopies of all pages.
    On the date of your appointment, you must submit ALL the documents and photocopies of all documents and the application forms at the INM office.
    Make your appointment for your INM visit here: citas.inm.gob....
    If you are approved, you will be photographed and fingerprinted and your biodata will be secured in the Mexican governments official database.
    If all goes according to requirements and with some luck, you will leave the INM office with your Temporary Residence Card.
    The Mexico Temporary Resident Card is valid for one year on the first issuance and can be renewed for another one, two, or three years.
    After four years of living with a Temporary Resident Visa, you become eligible to apply for Permanent Residency.
    UPDATE AS OF MARCH 2022:
    The certification I was missing when I took in my Acta de Matrimonio can be obtained here:
    actasmx.com/ki...
    you will take your acta de matrimonio to the kiosk, pay your fee and receive a validated version of it which the INM office will need.

    FYI, you can also get temporary residency by family reunification to someone who is not a Mexican citizen. I applied for and received temporary residency, and was able to get temporary residency for my partner this way. : )

      This is really interesting but makes sense if the INM allows for unity with someone who is in a Mexico on a permanent residency or work visa. Good to know, we missed that in our research.

    Good afternoon Greg, Thanks a ton for the information on getting my marriage license apostilled. I called the Georgia Secretary of State's office in Atlanta and for the unbelievable price of $3.00 I got it done. I did have to leave the marriage license at their office with a prepaid return envelope. They processed my application the next day and send me the form. Super easy and for the right price. Thanks again

    Good afternoon Greg- If you do not reply I fully understand as my questions have been coming via rapid fire but understand you do not know how much I really appreciate and plan on posting on your tube my entire process. I believe I am good on the payment and scheduling appointment area and thanks for posting the information about the translator in Coyocan as I will use them. The information about having our US marriage license apostilled in the US was huge. I found a few people in Atlanta that handle that service but it will run about $175 (ouch). I am now in the online application process and there are a number of options with "what do you want to do" The ones that might pertain to me are Extend the stay or Change stay condition. There are a five other options but I do not think that would be me. If I choose Change stay condition there are seven options. My wife is not home who obviously is fluid in Spanish and the seven options are in Spanish. I see one that says Camion de condicion a residente temporal por unidad familiar- Since I see the word temporal and familiar I believe that might be me?? I will try to paste the screen shot.

I wanted to double check with you about a few things. 1.) You did this process while you were on a tourist visa in Mexico? 2.) Were you married in Mexico? If not, what was the process like when having your marriage certificate certified and translated in Mexico? 3.) Do you have any knowledge of what it is like/ how you obtain a work permit after getting temporary residency? And lastly 4.) Do you have any RUclips channels or websites that you recommend to research this process further? Thank you!

      Hi and thanks for watching. I hate to say it but no, your wife can’t accompany you in the INM office but rest assured that most INM staff speak some English and are prepared to assist you, especially if you bring written notes to help. In order to pay your fees, you will go online to the INM website where you will apply for two separate things: change of residency by reason of family unity and a change of visitor status. These are two different fees and the website will provide you with two different pages with the costs to pay. These pages will need to be printed out and taken to any Mexican bank to pay and they will only accept cash for these. They will issue you two paid receipts and you must make two copies of each of these to take with you to the INM office. Hope this helps!

    Good afternoon Greg, Thanks again for posting the video as this helps a ton. My wife was born in Mexico but also has US citizenship. We got married in Atlanta and currently live here. We will move to Coyoacan the later part of this year. We will be in Coyoacan for five weeks in May and June. I was going to start the process of getting the temporary residence card at the Mexican Consulate office here in Atlanta but it sounds like it would be best to fly into Mexico City airport and get the tourist visa and then apply to have it changed to temporary residence. Okay I have created an account with the Insitituto Nacional De Migracion and obviously trying to get an appointment. I understand once I get the appointment I will print the QR code that will be used to gain access to the facility for the interview. Question is when do I print or gain access to the two forms that will be needed to take to the bank in order to pay the fee for change of status and the fee for the temporary residence? I understand our marriage license that was issued here in Atlanta that also has the official seal from the county will need to be translated. I understand that needs to be done by a perito traductor in Mexico (is that correct). The paperwork I will take to my interview will be 1. My and my wife's passport ( with all the original paperwork I plan on having at least two extra copies). 2. My wife's voter ID card. 3. Copy of a power, gas, and water bill in her name. (yes we have a home in Coyoacan that my wife's mom lives in but all the services are in my wife's name). 4. Original and copy of receipt from the bank where the fees were paid. 5. Original marriage license and translated copies. Do you know of any other paperwork that I will need?
    I believe they take your picture at their office so there is no need to bring a passport style photo. Greg, I am sorry but the very long list of questions but hopefully you can find time to answer and I want to give you a huge thanks in advance. Hey if we ever meet in Coyoacan then breakfast, lunch, and dinner are on me! Thanks again

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching and writing. The fee forms that you will take to the bank in Mexico can be found here: www.inm.gob.mx/gobmx/derechos/Remember that you will have TWO SEPARATE fees to pay: Derecho de Residente Temporal (DRT)
      **AND**
      Por Recepcion, estudio, y en su caso, autorizacion de cambio de condicion (For receiving, investigating, and in your case, authorization of change of condition) - which is the fee to apply for the change of status from tourist to any other kind of stay.) You will do these separately on the same website listed above and it will take you to a page where you can print out the facturas you will take to the bank to pay, in cash. The bank will then issue you two receipts showing that you have paid the required fees, which you will take to your INM appointment. You can print these out right before your trip, what matters is that the fees are paid within a month of your INM appointment.
      Next question - yes your official translation of your apostilled marriage certificate must be translated in Mexico, ideally in the jurisdiction where you plan to apply for residency, by a perito traductor. There is a good one in Coyoacan, not too expensive : perito-traductor.com/contactanos/
      Based on what you have described, you should have everything you need to get it done! Buena suerte!!

Or do I need to go back and get my birth certificate. Thank you for your help!

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад

      Hey Marcus, thanks for watching. The answer is it depends. If you have a Mexican government issued Marriage Certificate and the name matches your own passport, you should be able to use those two documents to establish a family relationship to a Mexican citizen and qualify that way. If your marriage certificate was issued in the US and you married a Mexican citizen, you may also be able to pass the tests with an apostilled, recent copy of the marriage certificate which must be also translated into Spanish by a perito traductor. If you have these documents, you can apply and try making the appointment, the worst thing they can say is 'no' and take your application pesos, but if your marriage certificate matches exactly to your Mexican spouse's official name (same first name and apellido - family name) and it matches their official Mexican id, passport INE card, etc, then you have a good chance. Remember, names on all identity documents and certificates must match precisely, without exception. Good luck!

We both live and work in the U.S. and my wife is a Mexican national and I wanted to apply for temporary residency to avoid the hassle (of me) having to get a tourist FMM every time we want to visit family throughout Mexico. My concerns is that my wife (or both of us) must be in Mexico before I can apply. If that's the case, it won't work for me because my job does not allow me to work remotely from another country. I just wanted to get a head-start on the process and seize the opportunity. Thank you in advance for any advice.

    Lovely video, thanks so much in advance!

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад +1

      Yay!! Glad it was helpful! First things first: yes, your husband needs to have his INE card and you will need to bring it with you (and two copies of it) to your appointment. I don't think there is any way around this, although they might accept his Mexican passport as official ID. They usually ask for the INE as the primary form of ID for Mexicans. Secondly, you will need the marriage certificate that you were issued by the registro civil "validated" by the official CDMX government. I think this is just a process to collect more fees but they will issued you a different official version of your marriage certificate which you will surrender to the INM office to prove your marriage. The place where you get this done is walking distance from the INM office in Polanco and it's upstairs from a medical office and bakery. I don't know the address but I am sure the INM office can provide you with it. You will need to bring this validated copy of the marriage certificate with you on the day of your INM appointment.

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад

      OK I am looking at the form now. It seems to be issued by an office called Gobierno del Distrito Federal Direccion General Del Registro Civil Certificaciones. Basically, it looks similar to the registro civil marriage certificate but without your fingerprint and it has a bar code and a QR code at the top of the page. This is what they will scan at the INM office.

      Hi and thanks for watching! You sound like you have two possibilities right off the bat, you can obtain residencia temporal por vinculo familiar (based on your son) or you can wait and get married in Mexico to your Mexican fiancé, which is the path Greg followed. You should definitely obtain official copies of your own birth certificate and your son's birth certificate before you move to Mexico. Your US birth certificate will need to be apostilled in the state of issue. You can try applying for temporary residency through the Mexican Embassy in the US with these documents but we have heard that it can be hard to obtain appointments right now.

      The other option is to skip straight to temporary residency by meeting the financial requirements if you plan to move to Mexico and you have the necessary amount in savings or can demonstrate the required monthly income (see our other video about Obtaining Dual Citizenship.)

    Did you need a certified birth certificate with apostille for your marriage in Mexico and second certified birth certificate with apostille for temporary residency?

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  Год назад

      You will need a certified apostilled birth certificate to apply for your marriage license if you are a US citizen who is marrying a Mexican citizen (Greg needed his to marry Alice, who had Mexican citizenship.) Once you have an official Mexican marriage certificate (you have been legally married), you must get a different version of it that has a QR code and a bar code from the local government office (it's literally a kiosk with an attendant.) You then take this with your tramite de cambio de estancia forms (application to change your immigration status,) copies of your passport, and your pre-paid fees with copies of the receipt to the INM office and stand in line. It's all very bureacratic and a little confusing, which is why many people hire local attorneys to handle the process. When I (Greg) did this, I was next to two different Mexican attorneys who were doing the process for their clients.

    Is it necessary to book an appointment. I’ve heard it’s first come first served at the INM

      Absolutely 100% necessary. They won't even let you into the building without an appointment.

      @@AliceandGreg thanks so much for your swift response. I hope you can answer another question for me. I just got married to a Mexican national in Mexico. However, my FMM expires on Feb 4th and I am unable to get an appointment in CDMX INM before March. Does this mean I would have to leave Mexico and start the process at the consulate in my home country? Thank you!

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад +1

      @@gautamramdas92 Technically, yes. When Greg went into the INM office to apply for his temporary residency card, they initially started to hassle him about “not enough time left on your FMM” - which actually had an additional 90+ days left on it! Supposedly, you can apply for an extension of your FMM via the INM based on your marriage, but we don’t know anyone who has done that successfully. Perhaps someone on this channel can help? If you overstay your FMM, you may be subject to stiff fines from the INM when you try to leave or re-enter, and a valid FMM with “time left on it” is apparently required for the approval of temporary residency by reason of family unity.

    Hi Alice and Greg. How can I book an appointment at the nearest I.N.M. office to where I am moving? (stupid question? ha) I need to get my temporary resident card.
    This video is very helpful. I just got my one time entry, 30 day, card in my Passport from the Consulate here! Of course, I need to make an appointment at I.N.M. in Mexico in advanced. I already created an I.N.M. site login, filled out the tramite form, formato basico, pago de derecho, printed and saved them as pdfs.
    However, I do Not see online where one can look for and book available appointments at the nearest I.N.M. office. I am just not seeing this online. Would you respond with a link? I know I need to make this appointment in advanced and have all my paper work, pay at a bank the 'pago de derecho,' etc.
    Any help is appreciated. Great content. Thanks, C.

    The Right of Payments page is very confusing as what to fill out. Could you specify what you chose to get the $217 fee and application fee? I only got 1 fee and that was $217.

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад

      Hi Hannah! I just wrote this for another commenter, hope it helps explain the fees more clearly:

      Thank you! It did help clarify a bit, but at least on my Macbook the dropdown menus don't seem as clear on the website.
      Also an update with appointments, they are backed up until June now. If I don't get this first appointment right I may have to leave the country haha. I'm guessing from the new immigration policy changes and updates!

      @@AliceandGreg I went to pay my fees today, and the HSBC bank said I need my RFC number, and without it the receipts may not be accepted by the INM for my appointment tomorrow. Do you know what this is? I tried to give her my social security number but she said it wasn't the right one. Did you come across this when you paid fees?

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад

      @@hannahradigan6672 Hi Hannah, the RFC requirement is a relatively new development (within the last 60 days) - basically, the Mexican government wants to ensure that all residents have an RFC so they can be tracked for income and taxation purposes, etc. It's a new hurdle, one that wasn't in place when we processed our application. We will attach a link below to QRoo Paul's always very informative and timely video on this subject.

    Thank you so much for a great video. My husband is Mexican and I want to know what documents do I need from my spouse? You mentioned a voter card and I have never heard of this in any videos. Does the INM allow cell phones in their offices?

    • @AliceandGreg
      @AliceandGreg  2 года назад

      Hi! It's called an INE card and it's considered the primary form of id for Mexicans. You will need either the original and two copies or possibly just two copies to establish your Mexican husband's identity. No, they won't allow you to use a cell phone inside the office, but they may allow you to step outside to use it and then come back.
