I saw Mercury Rev with the Flaming Lips as an opener in 1999 at SXSW. They preformed Deserters Song and Soft Bulletin that night. It doesn’t get much better than that!

i saw them play the 2nd stage at lollapalooza in the bay area trippin' balls when they were pimpin' their debut full length & it was a freakin' psychedelic tsunami of sound! next this senior citizen gets on stage approaches the mic to introduce the next band AND I'M FREAKING OUT because (thinking out loud) that dude looks exactly like Timothy Leary & the hottie trippin' next to me says; "it might have something to do with the fact that that is Timothy Leary" anyshizzle he's raving about this next band blah blah blah some group called TOOL doubtful they ever went anywhere

Remember buying Deserter's Songs when it came out on the strength of Opus 40. However, it was this track which will forever remind me that the album purchase was the best decision ever. That said, the entire album is pure quality.🙌❤🙌

@@virgindie25 How come? At its time it was universally acclaimed by critics and it saved Mercury Rev's ass from the bankruptcy. Lotsa copies were sold for an indie band like these guys. And, in words of Donahue himself, he said that he would hear them playing the record everywhere, even at the supermarket.

Maybe the most under appreciated band of their era. Every album from "Yrself Is Steam" through "All Is Dream" offers up some brilliant varieties of psychedelic ear tickling. Droning, ambient stoner waves to orchestrated, symphonic dream pop with some guitar freak outs all over. They where incredible.

Very moving. Played this for my GF when I broke up with her. So deeply touching still since I deeply loved her and she me, but couldn't go on with someone who has a personality disorder yet is such a beautiful person. We still are very very close friends even though I have another GF (who btw supports our friendship 100%). A beautiful song, fitting to the memories I have of her.

Tell me about it, i ended my relationship with a bipolar woman about a year ago, i got her into Mercury Rev and Mogwai and she sent me the link to this video and described in detail what we were doing and where we were headed when this song was playing in my car, sadly because of her violent and self harming outburst i cant be friends with her...i know im far from perfect, but no matter how many women have come and gone, i am flooded with thoughts of her and how at one point i couldnt see myself apart from her

Loved this album years ago and sadly forgot about it until I recently heard a portion of chord progressions from "holes" on a comedy show of all places. No RUclips back then. And never saw MR live. Now seeing this done live is just breathtaking! Such a different and subdued way from the studio albums amazing arrangement of strings, woodwinds, and brass. This was an amazing performance made all the more amazing by the small applause afterwards. Not out lack of appreciation, but from a very select few who got to see this live on Jools Holland.
