I’ve been learning to serve obsessively and this may be the best video on it on RUclips I know it’s just backswing but your technique, communication and production values are off the chart
Honestly, my backswing felt really stiff while I was doing the staggered backswing. But I took the quiz and switched to the classic backswing and everything just felt so much more fluid. Thank you so much for this
You are a great instructor. For many years I've tried to have the classic backswing but my toss has always been a huge problem. I didn't realize it until I watched your video. I'm tried the second type or the delayed yesterday and I actually controlled my toss. Could have been just a good serving day but I'm going to stay with it for awhile and see what happens. Thank you
Thank you!. I have been looking for exactly a lesson like this that can fix my backswing! Very well made, crisp lesson. Would love to see more lessons on different shots from you sir. For example, I want fix my forehand, specifically for slow balls where I tend to hit out of the court
Thank you so much for another original and insightful analysis! (Mind-blowing stuff!) Whenever you have a chance, just a quick question: do players with a staggered backswing toss the ball more in front of the baseline to buy time or is the backswing with racquet drop just more accelerated? (I've been struggling with the timing here and end up opening the racquet face up too early exactly the way that you've show, propelling the ball long.)
No - Ball toss in front doesn't buy you more time . I think you could be over analysing things . Try this. Find the action you like then suit ball placement accordingly. Guy here likes Abreviated swing . So that is best for him. A Rod started with classical and himself went to his ab swing . Good coach should help you find your serve
I have a staggered motion but seeing how much fun you have doing the abbreviated motion makes me want to try it. =D I’m not sure why but Wawrinka’s take back makes me cringe. I guess seeing the racquet that high that long makes me think of waiter’s tray or something.
Whenever I serve, it slightly hurts my upper arm and shoulder and I'm not sure why... Is there any common swing mistake than can commonly cause shoulder/arm pain? Thanks!
got a rotator cuff injury due to serving a few years ago and it's never truly been the same. I know you're not a medical expert but which style would you recommend to put less strain? Very vague without actually seeing my service motion, I know.
Hey Mattin! Great question, I have had players that I've worked with before who had previous shoulder injuries so I know that you'd want a backswing that's effective but puts the least strain on your muscles and tendons. You can actually execute any of these backswings and stay injury free. What's more important is that you are in a comfortable position at the end of your racquet drop and at contact. This means that you'll want to decrease the amount of external rotation you get. I would personally recommend using the classical backswing or starting from the trophy position while keeping your racquet drop nice and slow to begin with. Hope this helps!
Sorry to say but it does not matter what kind of backswing form you have, if your ball toss is completely irratic. Low tosses do not give beginners enough time to properly perform the service motion; not to mention, if you cannot toss the ball in the same place every single time. The ball toss either makes or breaks the serve; yet, nobody goes in complete detail about how to toss the ball, where to toss, or when to toss the ball. My toss is debilitating my serve and confidence.
Backswing is for me a big mistake, as a phrase mistake. There is no swing in it: Francis ( The same goes for all kind of strokes in tennis. ) Think it over...
Hey Ferenc! That is a really interesting point. I always wondered why they called it a backswing, although some aliases for it are Wind Up, Take Back, and Prep to name a few. I'd love to know what you call it 🙂
Just realised that I've switched from 1 to 2. 2 allows me to be more relaxed in the first part of the serve (toss and backswing) and more explosive in the racket drop and contact. Great video, thanks!
This is another great video from you. I had once tried to the delay one, until I realised that I opened racket during the swing/drop. So I switched back to classic one, as the elbow move keeps the racket close. Quick question: are you the same one with the short hair doing the serve contact video before? Your videos are all great with good technical explanation and no gimmick. Love your work! 👍😍
Great point! Nadal has changed his serve over the years, with a hybrid between the abbreviated and staggered. As I mentioned in the video, the classifications are very broad and most players will never perfectly fit into one category - it is much more based on their personal preference and rhythm.
Players using the 2nd motion, I think, would toss the ball higher than those who uses the 1st or 3rd motion. There are odd balls like Jay Berger, McEnroe (keeps his arm straight on his back swing) and Current(who tossed low). ruclips.net/video/0MYYUbTuTYs/видео.html ruclips.net/video/kyEgKjGoi5Y/видео.html
Thank you for your sharing and explanation. But I have a little suggestion, especially for the green hand about server: could you please make the slow motion of backswing, i.e. arm motion, rotation, wrist rotation and so on. Thank you.
Thanks, great video.. Can you please tell us how to deal with the toss timing and the bending/jump when you serve? It's so important and no one talks about it. It's so hard to do.
That's what I like all emotion at one time and to have an abbreviated one but not super baby but straight back this is going to make it a lot easier on the timing because when you start dealing with that dropped elbow position that's trouble you're going to that's the only good like a flat surf like you going to cannonball and you're looking for an ace that's just explosive flat surf but if you're going to go for a slice which almost every ball has a little bit of slicer top on it on your surf that's going to give you a little bit of control so why would you even mess with a low percentage serve in the first place I'm carry out it's the best players in the world don't mess with exaggerated take backs you're looking at the joke of it you never want it's it's the same as I'm doing abbreviated it's an abbreviated take back he had to change his serve because he had tennis elbow because he was taught the other method which was the drop the elbow lower and he developed in a cell but from that he quit and now he's on the abbreviated one like mine and that's enabling him to time it all together still get the lift still get the proper service motion which is the throwing one and then he's got the nice finish
Finally someone made a video about this. Was wondering how the hell do the pros move their arms during the backswing. What's worse is the ad and deuce serves may look slightly different due to camera angle => making it tough to see whats going on.
Thank you! Thank you! This completely explains what I’ve been trying to figure out through experiment. Ive always used a full swing, but when I saw how hard you hit your serve in a previous video, I tried to mimic it but had no real clue what I was doing. Turns out I was actually doing the most abbreviated motion….and I can’t believe how effortless speed is generated with a much shorter ball toss and quick motion. Definitely a learning curve after all these years, but I’m loving it.
Hey guys! Thank you so much for watching the video 😊 Let me know in the comments which backswing you have or would like to have!
Classic hesitation. Excellent analysis and idea. Thumbs up from me.
I’ve been learning to serve obsessively and this may be the best video on it on RUclips

First time I've seen various serve backswings discussed. Nice!
I'm so glad to hear that! I hope breaking down the different nuances of this stage of the serve helped :)
Why are you guys so underrated? Yall should have 200,000 subs
Honestly, my backswing felt really stiff while I was doing the staggered backswing. But I took the quiz and switched to the classic backswing and everything just felt so much more fluid. Thank you so much for this

Fantastic video. Nobody really discusses the serve backswing per say that much. So good job here.
Your videos are so brilliantly presented. I've coached for years but some of these are massively improving my understanding of modern techniques
Your videos and comments are incredible, a very good knowhow, amused and instructive
These 2 brothers are the best. Great stage presence and charisma!
Most detailed explanation Ive ever seen . Great video
Thank you!. I have been looking for exactly a lesson like this that can fix my backswing! Very well made, crisp lesson. Would love to see more lessons on different shots from you sir. For example, I want fix my forehand, specifically for slow balls where I tend to hit out of the court
This is amazing and a very helpful content! ❤
Excellent analysis and explanation.
❤
Out standing.
This channel is so underrated
Exactly what I keeded thanks!
Great video gives me more ways to work my serve thanks!
Always a great lesson.
Maxime Cressy serve would be an "abbreviated backswing"? I really like his serve and I want to serve that way.
You’re back!
We're back!

That shit helped a lot, awesome stuff guys!
This guy is legit💪🏾!!!
Great video, thank you
I want to watch your videos but i never know which serve you are illustrating in this video are you talking about flat serve or kicker or slice??
Can you make a video on the smash?
Great video any thoughts on which backswing is easier on rotator cuff
Love you!!! How about a slice serve.
Bravo 🙏
This guy is legit!!
LOve your teachings
Very nice...
Killing it
How do you like your V7? Is the V8 worth upgrading into? Thank you!
I have a staggered motion but seeing how much fun you have doing the abbreviated motion makes me want to try it. =D I’m not sure why but Wawrinka’s take back makes me cringe. I guess seeing the racquet that high that long makes me think of waiter’s tray or something.
The serve backswing quiz link no longer works 😢
Whenever I serve, it slightly hurts my upper arm and shoulder and I'm not sure why... Is there any common swing mistake than can commonly cause shoulder/arm pain? Thanks!
how about tsitsipas?? is he abbreviated??
that wilson blade 104 v7 can serve up some serious bombs too...
Welcome back, guys!
AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Missed you
Nice... 👍👍

@@RacquetFlex thank you for the detailed response, I'll be sure to be aware/mindful of that next time I practice
I'd like to have the classic backswing
I've always used the staggered back swing and always feel a bit rushed and feel like I have to do a higher toss because of it...
Great to see the big guy back in action. Your associate is good of course but he isn't you
👌
can you let me know your string setup😄😄
Great question! I am currently using the HyperG with about 52 tension using the Jet Method.
@@RacquetFlex thanks 👍 I asked because you have best knowledge of tennis on RUclips..... Your setup must be best too😉😉😁
Are you right handed or left handed?
the quiz got removed
❤❤❤❤❤❤

This dude the male Osaka
4th type: no back swing
Anybody ever tell you that you look like a male version of Osaka?
You are going to slice your hair off with that swing.
I'd love to know what you call it 🙂
Your hair is so distracting, it’s impossible to pay attention and focus on what you say
Yes! Osaka is my spirit animal 😆 We are both half Japanese so she's a real inspiration to us.
Your hair is awesome! Let it fly my friend😎
This is sick, might just be what I've been needing to improve my serve consistency!
Reason I found the abbreviated so helpful was it took my focus off of my arm and I could focus more on the legs and jumping at the ball.
What about Delbonis' pre-backswing lol
Another great RF vid 👍
Just realised that I've switched from 1 to 2. 2 allows me to be more relaxed in the first part of the serve (toss and backswing) and more explosive in the racket drop and contact. Great video, thanks!
Great video! I'm a big fan of the abbreviated motion (Roddick's serve)!
Thanks so much! Same here, the few times that I've hit an abbreviated serve, they explode off the court 🤣
This is another great video from you. I had once tried to the delay one, until I realised that I opened racket during the swing/drop. So I switched back to classic one, as the elbow move keeps the racket close.

such a professional breakdown, excellent work
From my understanding, Nadal uses the abbreviated. Nice
Great point! Nadal has changed his serve over the years, with a hybrid between the abbreviated and staggered. As I mentioned in the video, the classifications are very broad and most players will never perfectly fit into one category - it is much more based on their personal preference and rhythm.
Man your serve looks great with all backswings. Jealous.
Players using the 2nd motion, I think, would toss the ball higher than those who uses the 1st or 3rd motion. There are odd balls like Jay Berger, McEnroe (keeps his arm straight on his back swing) and Current(who tossed low).

One of underrated tip for better serve. Thank you for making vedio. And thanks to youtube algo that I ended here!!!!
Thanks for watching, Jignesh! I am happy that you found us too. I hope the tips on the backswing continue to help your serve 🙂
I use the classical pendulum backswing
Such great quality videos. Keep them coming!
Thanks a lot ! Clear explanations, even for a French speaker like me! 😂
How fast is your serve?abbreviated motion..what do you mean?best regards
Hi great vid. The evaluation questionnaire does not work for me.
1 classical pendulum
2 staggered delayed
3 abbreviated
On the staggered do you pull the elbow back with the toss?
You hair is disturbing ..have a nice haircut sir
Make more content dude… absolutely fab
Hey Chun! We are starting weekly uploads very shortly :) 8 videos currently in the making. Stay tuned!
what is the speed of your splendid serve
You explained that well :))
Do you have any courses about the serve?
is the wrist bending at contact point?
Classical Backswing
TOP content. Talented guy.
FANTASTIC CONTENT, CLEAR INFORMATION... LOVE IT
Thank you for your sharing and explanation. But I have a little suggestion, especially for the green hand about server: could you please make the slow motion of backswing, i.e. arm motion, rotation, wrist rotation and so on. Thank you.
Can you make only a Video from the abbreviated backswing, from the side an behind?can i find it on Your Homepage?
Marcus

I am John from Greece and i found it very detailed.
Great job, sincerely!!!
Mine is the second 😂
Really xcellent.. 😁 And the infectious laughter..
Great stuff. But is it alright for a player to mix different backswings depending on the situation?
wow! what a great video!
I wanna play this guy, but he'll probably charge me. I don't wanna pay to get my ass kicked!
Thanks for posting mate! This explains the mechanics pretty quickly and clearly. I scored the staggered momentum serve :)
Thanks for your detailed explanation if the different types of back swings.
