I’ve been learning to serve obsessively and this may be the best video on it on RUclips I know it’s just backswing but your technique, communication and production values are off the chart
You are a great instructor. For many years I've tried to have the classic backswing but my toss has always been a huge problem. I didn't realize it until I watched your video. I'm tried the second type or the delayed yesterday and I actually controlled my toss. Could have been just a good serving day but I'm going to stay with it for awhile and see what happens. Thank you
Honestly, my backswing felt really stiff while I was doing the staggered backswing. But I took the quiz and switched to the classic backswing and everything just felt so much more fluid. Thank you so much for this
Just realised that I've switched from 1 to 2. 2 allows me to be more relaxed in the first part of the serve (toss and backswing) and more explosive in the racket drop and contact. Great video, thanks!
I'm coming back from pandemic slowdown. My serve was suffering and I was in just the past few days fixing my hitting arm position. Not many coaches teach this, on the serve or otherwise.Saw a Federer serve video where he straightens his hitting arm on the windup, flexes his chest, then cocks at the elbow. Your lesson does exactly this and my serve is BACK! Thanks!
Thank you! Thank you! This completely explains what I’ve been trying to figure out through experiment. Ive always used a full swing, but when I saw how hard you hit your serve in a previous video, I tried to mimic it but had no real clue what I was doing. Turns out I was actually doing the most abbreviated motion….and I can’t believe how effortless speed is generated with a much shorter ball toss and quick motion. Definitely a learning curve after all these years, but I’m loving it.
Thank you!. I have been looking for exactly a lesson like this that can fix my backswing! Very well made, crisp lesson. Would love to see more lessons on different shots from you sir. For example, I want fix my forehand, specifically for slow balls where I tend to hit out of the court
This is another great video from you. I had once tried to the delay one, until I realised that I opened racket during the swing/drop. So I switched back to classic one, as the elbow move keeps the racket close. Quick question: are you the same one with the short hair doing the serve contact video before? Your videos are all great with good technical explanation and no gimmick. Love your work! 👍😍
Great video, thanks. I've never seen the backswing techniques explained in such a detailed way. It has cleared my mind on technical questions I've always had in the past on the backswing.
Just watched your tennis con 5 offering and it was really good. I know a lot of instructors say stay sideways through the motion but it seems that what you teach really stresses the turning of the shoulders into contact to cause the racket drop and shoulder to go internal to external. Any clarification you could provide, I’d love to know. Thanks for the awesome stuff.
Thank you for your sharing and explanation. But I have a little suggestion, especially for the green hand about server: could you please make the slow motion of backswing, i.e. arm motion, rotation, wrist rotation and so on. Thank you.
Thanks, great video.. Can you please tell us how to deal with the toss timing and the bending/jump when you serve? It's so important and no one talks about it. It's so hard to do.
Finally someone made a video about this. Was wondering how the hell do the pros move their arms during the backswing. What's worse is the ad and deuce serves may look slightly different due to camera angle => making it tough to see whats going on.
I love your videos now. You have toned down the stylistic portions of the production in favor of more information content. I started with the abbreviated takeback and it worked fine because it was simple. But timing was hard. And as I got more coordinated, I moved to the staggered takeback. However, I did experience the problems with a poor drop. I have to say that I did not try to copy any pros technique at this point. I was just trying to get a reliable serve. When these efforts failed, I moved to the classical takeback. I also toss parallel to the baseline with a platform stance. Like yours, my whole serve is basically modeled from Fed's serve and I admit it was hard to get. The journey was about 1.5 years of hard work but it's worth it. When i used the other takebacks, my serve was just so inconsistent. Sometimes I would hit with power. Sometimes not. Sometimes it would be accurate and sometimes not. Now I can consistently serve with good power and accuracy. I also have a reliable kicker and decent slice. Life is good. Thanks for the video.
Hi, Wally, thanks for the kind words and for sharing your journey! 🙏 There's a lot of personal tinkering and experimentation that goes into making your serve "your own." But in the end, those bombs down the T or sick slice serves make it worth it. I'm glad you've finally settled down with one (sounds like a marriage 😂).
I really enjoyed your video first time I've seen you show three different types of serving motions I kind of prefer roddick's motion it seems to work best for me looking forward to your next video
Thank you so much for another original and insightful analysis! (Mind-blowing stuff!) Whenever you have a chance, just a quick question: do players with a staggered backswing toss the ball more in front of the baseline to buy time or is the backswing with racquet drop just more accelerated? (I've been struggling with the timing here and end up opening the racquet face up too early exactly the way that you've show, propelling the ball long.)
No - Ball toss in front doesn't buy you more time . I think you could be over analysing things . Try this. Find the action you like then suit ball placement accordingly. Guy here likes Abreviated swing . So that is best for him. A Rod started with classical and himself went to his ab swing . Good coach should help you find your serve
Hi Kuriimu Ika - love the name by the way! That's great to hear that you're finding your favorite style. Remember that you can (and should) blend whatever works for your serve instead of sticking to a rigid technique.
Great point! Nadal has changed his serve over the years, with a hybrid between the abbreviated and staggered. As I mentioned in the video, the classifications are very broad and most players will never perfectly fit into one category - it is much more based on their personal preference and rhythm.
Whenever I serve, it slightly hurts my upper arm and shoulder and I'm not sure why... Is there any common swing mistake than can commonly cause shoulder/arm pain? Thanks!
Hey Ethan! Thanks for watching! We can make a video dedicated to breaking down Federer's serve and how you can best take away the elements that makes his serve so great and put it into your own.
hi, great vid, thanks. I am wondering if you could make a comparison and analysis of Fededer's slice serve vs S.Williams's ? these two have the best slice serve on tour from male and female players, however their techniques are quite different, I mean the way of pronation. I'd like to know which one is better for amateurs to copy?
Thanks for watching! What a great video idea - we can certainly make a video breaking down both of their serves as well as other strokes. Both are great serve styles to copy as they are very smooth and minimalistic motions.
I have a staggered motion but seeing how much fun you have doing the abbreviated motion makes me want to try it. =D I’m not sure why but Wawrinka’s take back makes me cringe. I guess seeing the racquet that high that long makes me think of waiter’s tray or something.
got a rotator cuff injury due to serving a few years ago and it's never truly been the same. I know you're not a medical expert but which style would you recommend to put less strain? Very vague without actually seeing my service motion, I know.
Hey Mattin! Great question, I have had players that I've worked with before who had previous shoulder injuries so I know that you'd want a backswing that's effective but puts the least strain on your muscles and tendons. You can actually execute any of these backswings and stay injury free. What's more important is that you are in a comfortable position at the end of your racquet drop and at contact. This means that you'll want to decrease the amount of external rotation you get. I would personally recommend using the classical backswing or starting from the trophy position while keeping your racquet drop nice and slow to begin with. Hope this helps!
Hey guys! Thank you so much for watching the video 😊 Let me know in the comments which backswing you have or would like to have!
Classic hesitation. Excellent analysis and idea. Thumbs up from me.
First time I've seen various serve backswings discussed. Nice!
I'm so glad to hear that! I hope breaking down the different nuances of this stage of the serve helped :)
I’ve been learning to serve obsessively and this may be the best video on it on RUclips
I know it’s just backswing but your technique, communication and production values are off the chart
Why are you guys so underrated? Yall should have 200,000 subs

Fantastic video. Nobody really discusses the serve backswing per say that much. So good job here.
Your videos are so brilliantly presented. I've coached for years but some of these are massively improving my understanding of modern techniques
Thanks!
Also helps a great deal to point one's chest up at the ball. Keeps the arm in the socket and increases power and control.
Most detailed explanation Ive ever seen . Great video
Reason I found the abbreviated so helpful was it took my focus off of my arm and I could focus more on the legs and jumping at the ball.
This is sick, might just be what I've been needing to improve my serve consistency!
Your videos and comments are incredible, a very good knowhow, amused and instructive
Thank you! Thank you! This completely explains what I’ve been trying to figure out through experiment. If the perfect content didn't exist, now there it is! Congrats bro, you are the best of all.
These 2 brothers are the best. Great stage presence and charisma!
Thanks for your detailed explanation if the different types of back swings.
Thank you!. I have been looking for exactly a lesson like this that can fix my backswing! Very well made, crisp lesson. Would love to see more lessons on different shots from you sir. For example, I want fix my forehand, specifically for slow balls where I tend to hit out of the court
One of underrated tip for better serve. Thank you for making vedio. And thanks to youtube algo that I ended here!!!!
Thanks for watching, Jignesh! I am happy that you found us too. I hope the tips on the backswing continue to help your serve 🙂
Great video! I'm a big fan of the abbreviated motion (Roddick's serve)!
Thanks so much! Same here, the few times that I've hit an abbreviated serve, they explode off the court 🤣
such a professional breakdown, excellent work
Another great RF vid 👍

❤
This channel is so underrated
Great explanation of the different back swings. Very thorough and clear.
Great video, thanks. I've never seen the backswing techniques explained in such a detailed way. It has cleared my mind on technical questions I've always had in the past on the backswing.
Great video on different variations of the serve. I am just trying to build up more consistency and variety at the present time.
Such great quality videos. Keep them coming!
Great job, love categorical breakdowns, excellent work!
This is amazing and a very helpful content! ❤
Another excellent video! I have the classic back swing because Federer.
You’re back!
We're back!

Excellent video!
Thanks for posting mate! This explains the mechanics pretty quickly and clearly. I scored the staggered momentum serve :)
Thanks, great video.. Can you please tell us how to deal with the toss timing and the bending/jump when you serve? It's so important and no one talks about it. It's so hard to do.
Exactly what I keeded thanks!
best channel on yt!!!!!
Great video any thoughts on which backswing is easier on rotator cuff
My man top notch video like always!
Love the hair bro but aero dynamic wise it must slow you down on the court lol!
Awesome Vid!! Can you do a vid on the toss? Mines are erratic. I cant seem to fine the perfect release point.
Great video gives me more ways to work my serve thanks!
Make more content dude… absolutely fab
Hey Chun! We are starting weekly uploads very shortly :) 8 videos currently in the making. Stay tuned!
Really xcellent.. 😁 And the infectious laughter..
Great video! So helpful
This guy is legit!!

How do you like your V7? Is the V8 worth upgrading into? Thank you!
Out standing.

Amazing video!
TOP content. Talented guy.
FANTASTIC CONTENT, CLEAR INFORMATION... LOVE IT
Great video, thank you
welcome back!
Great stuff. But is it alright for a player to mix different backswings depending on the situation?
Hola amigo muy buenos los vídeos y explicaciones del servicio tipo latigazo natural
That shit helped a lot, awesome stuff guys!

Love you!!! How about a slice serve.
Very informative
On the staggered do you pull the elbow back with the toss?
F A N T A S T I C Video guys. Cheers and keep going
Can you make a video on the smash?
You explained that well :))
Very nice!
I am John from Greece and i found it very detailed.
Great job, sincerely!!!
Mine is the second 😂
Great video
wow! what a great video!
Thanks a lot ! Clear explanations, even for a French speaker like me! 😂
I use the classical pendulum backswing
How fast is your serve?abbreviated motion..what do you mean?best regards
I'm kind of in-between first and second type before I stayed in the second one lately, and I used the pinpoint stand from the beginning
Hi Kuriimu Ika - love the name by the way! That's great to hear that you're finding your favorite style. Remember that you can (and should) blend whatever works for your serve instead of sticking to a rigid technique.
I want to watch your videos but i never know which serve you are illustrating in this video are you talking about flat serve or kicker or slice??
Abbreviated backswing here, made the switch one day and never looked back. Far more consistent for me.
Do you have any courses about the serve?
LOve your teachings
Hi great vid. The evaluation questionnaire does not work for me.
I wish you would explain the type of serve would this be the first serve and is this a flat serve because I dont see any spin.
this is great!
From my understanding, Nadal uses the abbreviated. Nice

Maxime Cressy serve would be an "abbreviated backswing"? I really like his serve and I want to serve that way.
what is the speed of your splendid serve
Very nice...
is the wrist bending at contact point?
Bravo 🙏
I have a staggered motion but seeing how much fun you have doing the abbreviated motion makes me want to try it. =D I’m not sure why but Wawrinka’s take back makes me cringe. I guess seeing the racquet that high that long makes me think of waiter’s tray or something.
Missed you
how about tsitsipas?? is he abbreviated??

@@RacquetFlex thank you for the detailed response, I'll be sure to be aware/mindful of that next time I practice
Nice... 👍👍
