- General Antonio Luna (John Arcilla), commander of the revolutionary army, is spoiling for a fight. After three hundred years as a Spanish colony, the Philippines must endure a new foreign power: the United States of America. General Luna wants to fight for freedom but members of the elite want to strike a deal with the Americans. The infighting is fierce in the new cabinet but General Luna and his loyal men forge ahead even as his military decisions are met with resistance from soldiers who are loyal only to President Aguinaldo (Mon Confiado). Ultimately, it is the general’s legendary temper and pride that bring him to his death when a pack of presidential guards assassinate him in broad daylight. While American newspapers blame Aguinaldo, the mystery of General Luna’s assassination was never completely solved and his killers never put to justice.

I just realized that Heneral Luna's tactic on war against Americans has been effective and succeeded in today's Taliban's war with the Americans in Afghanistan. What a brilliant general. If only he was not murdered by traitors.

What good would an isolated and starving fortress do if the rest of the country had fallen under foreign control.
Moreover, the Philippines then did not have a well-trained army (at the footsoldier level, at the non-commissioned officer level and the leadership level). Most generals had titles but no matching skills. Those take time to develop
Then we did not have the equipment needed to do battle on even roughly equal terms.
Plus we did not have a developed logistical base for supporting the waging of modern war. Not even modern guerilla war, As it turned out.
Finally we were not all imbued with a strong sense of being one nation. Instead we were still regionalistic. So the Americans easily split us apart. Remember the Caviteno Aguinaldo was captured by Filipinos from Pampanga dressed as revolutionary soldiers, led by a very few American officers.
Gregorio Del Pilar's stand at Tirad was ended by Americans who were led around the Pass by a Filipino from the Cordillera. They picked off Del Pilar and his little band from behind.
There were many Filipinos who were highly motivated. But wars are not won only on inspiration . You also need trained, disciplined troops with good leadership and effective strategies.
Our people were up against a much more organized, trained and experienced army that had learned to fight in relatively modern ways during the USA Civil War of the 1860s and which had successfully fought the guerillas of the native Indian tribes, chasing them down and killing off most of them between 1865 and 1900.

The ideas of the film were unique and it was not dull. It was definitely an eye opener for me. Some of the historic films I have watched gradually gets gradually boring that's why I was not really a fan of such genres. However, after watching heneral luna (and goyo) because our teacher told us to do so, it definitely changed my views on these kind of films. I have learned a lot about how Filipinos fought for independence and how some Filipinos fought for their own, selfish desires. Kudos to all the casts that brought justice to their characters! Hoping to see more of films related to the Philippines history!!!

I've watched a LOT of K-Dramas and I always wonder how does it feel watching your old country. Whether its '90s, early 1900's, 1800's or even LONGER than that range. GMA already did a series with 'history, tradition & culture of the Philippines' but it was just a 'highlight', the series didn't focus to such genre.
Series: My Love From The Star, Philippine Adaptation. (oh, 'di pa talaga masasabing ATIN.)

No doubt kung bakit hanggang ngayon, Heneral parin ang tawag ko at ng karamihan sa kanya. Wala eh. Ang galing lang kasi ng portrayal ni John Arcilla, inangkin nya yung pangalang Heneral Luna. Parang totoo talagang nangyari lahat ng yan at di lang acting.

Theres no doubt how amazing John Arcilla’s portrayal of Heneral Luna is. He was in theater and started acting at a very young age. And other actors/actresses were amazing as well. But, we forget to appreciate how good it is, how realistic it looks with the help of the Director and People behind the camera. Everyone did a very great job on this movie! Sulit two hours mo, or maybe kulang pa nga.

This movie really broke me because of the heroic effort of all the revolutionary figures for the independence of the Philippines, I can't help but respect and feel jealous because there wasn't as many notable people or events in my country's independence like Heneral Luna.
