    Many years ago, when I lived in a townhouse, I put up a simple GAP vertical antenna. A member of the HOA complained. I argued that the antenna was properly installed/guyed,etc and not a danger to anyone or anything. Eventually, they waited until I was out of town and hired someone to go up and take down my antenna and throw it in my yard. Never again will I live in an HOA complex/neighborhood.

      A woman I worked with had an hoa. Her garbage were fenced in but a neighbor saw a tree over the 6 foot fence. We live in Buffalo and my friend took it as a sign that a Lemon Tree rooted next to her garbage can IN BUFFALO, NY. Not a lot of lemon, orange, banana trees growing in the northeast. They waited till she was at work and the hoa came in and removed. It literally destroyed her. HOA's suck when they get carried away.

    Just a minor quick correction to the price discussion occurring at 23 minutes into the video. The 7300 lists for $1299 (the current Icom $200 in-store discount coupon ends 12/31, thus the price reverts to $1299 on 1/1/21); the FT-DX10 lists for $1699. So, the Yaesu is not twice the price of the 7300. Hope this helps those comparison shopping features and value. As noted in the video, both are excellent radios.

    Fun and informative video! I met you and John at 'Hamcation 2020'. The FT-DX10 is a sweet radio and I'd definitely love to have one. Right away I could see where this radio would be a competitor to the IC-7300. I have owned two IC-7300's and loved them 100%. I like their filtering and intuitive operating features. Indeed the best bang for the buck. Sorry, but he FT-DX10 isn't twice as much as the IC-7300. It costs $700 more and the additional features on the FT-DX10 would be worth it. Whatever your budget allows, either radio is a winner! Thanks guys for a look at this impressive rig.

      The 7300 NR isn't as good as Yaesu's. I love my 7300 too but the audio on it is very harsh sounding compared to even the FT-891 with no DNR. The filters on the 7300 are also not as good as the 891. I think Yaesu may be on to a winner with this + it's got monitor out which is missing on the 7300, I got the PTRX panadapter and I have it hooked up to the Airspy HF+ and it sounds a lot better but the cost of this was mad but I already had the 7300.
      Definitely thinking about getting rid of the 7300 for the DX10. It's funny though, I'd never think about getting rid of the 891 it's just an amazing radio for it's size.

      @oOOscorpionOOo - I have an FT-891 and love that radio. I will never sell it! I also have a Yaesu FT-991A and to my ears the FT-891 has better filtering than the FT-991A! Yes, I can see myself owning an FT-DX10. 73!

    Nice to see this! I'm waiting for mine to arrive on Tuesday! I had originally ordered a 7300 but it was on backorder and I changed my mind after looking through the specs. The dx10 is expensive but really seems worth the money. Both of them are cheaper than the last accordion I bought, so that made it not seem so bad!

    For those of you who are not designers and may not see it. the 3D display provides a clear view of the historical signal strength when viewing the 3D mode - which is an operating parameter that the 7300 does not offer.

    • @n4hnhradio
      @n4hnhradio 2 года назад

      With FT-891, FT-991, and FT-991A, you must run the DNR at 9 or more, to avoid the digital artifacts that make it sound like you are listening under water. But it works very well at 9. Also, minimize the noise in the front end of the receiver, with IPO, ATT, and/or RF gain.
      The FTdx5000 and the FTdx10 have DNR algorithms that don’t produce the under water sound. FTdx101D/MP, as of the April 2021 update, has the same DNR performance as the FTdx10.

      Same here! I peeked out the DX3000 but as I heard from the DX10 I changed my mind. I should get mine in the mid of January :)
      The noise reduction is awsome, I had no idea that it's that effective. The DX10 also is reduced to the essential controls. Nothing too fancy but all filtering has a knob unlike on the 991.

    • @LeideHuend
      @LeideHuend 3 года назад +1

      @@torpe1 I don't know the Icom transceivers very much but I agree, it's not a replacement for the DX3000. It fits to a new generation with the hybrid SDR design and seems as an entry / mid level transceiver of the Yaesu family, right between the 991 and the DX101 I would say. The DX3000 has its very own place and it's still awesome as well as not equipped with newest "state if the art" technology. However, I thinkt both receivers are great, sharing different technologies between the classic superheterodyne and direct sampling SDR. The hybrid SDR design surely is a good compromise for a fair price tag.

    The 3D perspective is better for showing time. As signals are displayed the further time elapses the further to the back the signal trace is shown. It has its usefulness in crowded conditions identifying interfering signals, plus keeping an eye on the noise floor working the receiver front end.

    Point of order. Rob Sherwood doesn’t spend a lot of time on sensitivity. He talks mostly and rates radios by their close spaced blocking dynamic range. That’s where the FTDX 10 is a mile ahead of the 7300. Sensitivity is easy. Selectivity is hard

    Huge difference between FT991a and FTDX10 - the whole architecture is different. Superhet all through vs superhet first and then direct to SDR hybrid, that means you have much quieter noise floor, much better roofing filters, and better full digital tx/rx enhancements. Even Elecraft is going to the Superhet front with SDR Hybrid combo in the higher optioned K4 with the FTDX10 being a fraction of the price.
    Think about that last one, it means a lot.

  • @RSwrightMD
    @RSwrightMD 3 года назад +5

    Eric - you are somewhat misquoting the Sherwood report. He points out on his website and with his talks that sensitivity is comparable across all rigs. It has been consistent for 40 years amazingly and band noise (atmospheric and human-made) make sensitivity ratings meaningless. Rob Sherwood ranks transceivers by DR-3 @ 2Khz , largely a CW contesting metric. The selectivity of the rigs by blocking dynamic range (BDR), DR-3 (20 Khz for SSB and 2 Khz for CW) and RMDR (Reciprocal mixing dynamic range) are the important metrics for contesters and Dxers. It will be great to see if the FTdx-10 has similar performance to the FTdx-101d. No doubt it is a great performer in a small package but time will tell if hams are willing to pay twice the price of an Icom IC-7300 for it.

    • @miker8379
      @miker8379 3 года назад

      This also comes into play on ssb in crowded conditions such as 20m. Wonder if it's plagued by closeby transmitter neighbors or field day conditions like the 7300 is. Looks very interesting.

    • @RSwrightMD
      @RSwrightMD 3 года назад

      @@miker8379 Lots of hams talk about field day conditions but at best field day is 24 hours out of an entire year of ham operating. I do not base my purchase decisions on field day plans as I would not take a new personal rig to field day for others to break. I have not found the BDR of the Icom rigs to materially impact my multi rig contest station ever. Rob talks about BDR, but it is meaningless for most hams, except those running M-2 or M-M in a contest station. Buy the rig that meets your operating specs and provides a lot of pleasure operating. Lots of field day set ups use the Icom IC-7300 so it must work for most clubs.

    I am guessing the noise reduction algorithm in the FT DX10 is similar to that of the FT 891 which is outstanding. It makes an HF rig sound like a local 2 meter. Glad to see Yaesu getting better on their ergonomics and away from menu hell. With the great audio filtering and external monitor, Yaesu could drop the price closer to the IC 7300 and give ICOM a good run for the money. BTW, what is up with the DVI video interface? It is not 1999 anymore. Ever hear of HDMI Yaesu? Geeesh.

    Just bought one, spent several hours getting to know it and it needs several hours more. What I’ve discovered is that some of the negative things about the ergonomics can be overcome by alternative means - the multi dunctional ring! If I have one major gripe it’s the tuning knob is so easy to accidentally move freq. My FTdx3000 had more buttons but new advances in technology and the ever important price point means I have to also adapt. The receiver is something else, let me repeat ‘something else’. DNR is quite something and I have to check the antenna is plugged in on some bands as it’s that quiet. Hooking it up to an external monitor really completes the square for me, it looks and feels great. 73 de M0AZE.

I like the FTDX10 a little better just because of the filters and being able to plug it into the PC monitor . HDMI does require licensing and the use of the logo, but that surely isn't what's stopping them from it, they're probably just using that to support legacy hardware. Makes sense to use an older PC in the shack as most ham radio software is older and not very resource intensive.

    hdmi is not only interface now, but DisplayPort and USB-C that is in reality the same Display Port in Alt Mode of USB-C
    Yes, DVI sounds very obsoleted in 2020 and must not be installed at all. Inside it may require more components to transmite into DVI and cost in overall may cost more, but there is no development I suppose yet and it is the biggest investment.
    USB-C with DP sounds more and more reasonable as many mobile displays are in the market that might suite HAM constrained in free space desk

    I use DVI-D on my new Gamming pc for the monitors. it's like HDMI with out sound which you don't need, it's not a tv. and yes the radio makers would have to pay HDMI a royalty for ever radio sold. same reason Icom has DVI-D in 7610. I'm Loving my Yeasu FT-DX10.

    I was building regen receivers before my teens and learned tube theory alongside transistor theory in tech school back in the 60s. Never did much digital stuff during my entire design career either. So maybe it's because I'm old school, but I'm a bit lost on the point of all this sdr ham stuff as to why we need it. It's a neat gadget to show off with, but what's the real draw? It certainly isn't the price!

    • @IHateYoutubeHandles615
      @IHateYoutubeHandles615 3 года назад

      I'm not an expert, but I believe the draw is twofold: 1) you may be able to get a better dynamic range, more easily. 2) the waterfall display shows not just what's happening now, but what happened several seconds ago, so it's easier to locate a CQ that just happened but is currently quiet.

      The biggest advantage is versatility. Do you want a special filter that would be very difficult to do in hardware? Program it. Want ten more filters? Program them. At some point people might even be sharing code. That's impossible with hardware.

    You mentioned the Sherwood receiver test. Keep in mind that's heavily CW biased. Compare *ALL* the numbers of the FTdx-101D against the Kenwood TS-890S and you'll see why the 890 is a better SSB rig.

    Give it a year and the price will be more reasonable .Its got a lot of good stuff going on , the fact that you can just plug in a monitor with no need for a pc hook up is great .Cw decoder built in i think and i presume a rtty decoder as well .Big seller for Yeasu when the price come down a bit .

    Lets be honest, the 7300 is a good radio and Icom packed it with features back when it was released but at the expense of receiver performance and audio quality. The Audio sounds harsh compared to my FT-891 which sounds really good with headphones, I always listen with headphones.
    I got the PTRX panadapter and use it with the Airspy HF+ and SDR console and it made a big difference but It was expensive when you add it all up but I already had the Airspy HF+ and the 7300, I'd never advise anyone buy all 3, 7300, PTRX and Airspy, you're be at the price of the DX10.

    *ATTENTION* !!! A DVI video output port is compatible with very common HDMI inputs by using a very simple (fully passive, no embedded chips, just pin-to-pin wires) and readily available DVI-to-HDMI cable. This sort of cable is ~$10, barely a few dollars above the cost of a more common HDMI-to-HDMI cable. So all the grumbling and faffing-about concerning the DVI interface is just a wee bit silly, given this important tidbit of info. You don't need "an obsolete PC monitor", you don't need "a monitor with a DVI input", all you need to do is purchase a DVI-to-HDMI cable and use any modern monitor or TV that has an HDMI input. I hope this helps. Google terms: DVI HDMI Cable. Cheers.

    I was about to pull the trigger on the IC-7300 and then this video hit the net! One of the pluses, the 7300 has is a vibrant userbase with many "experts" willing to assist. I'm sure the FT-DX10 will be the same way in a couple of years, but not at the moment.
    Is there an internal tuner?
    Looking forward to version 2 with an apples to apples comparison.

    Yaesu is going to sell a lot of them for sure but with the economy the way it is now who knows I have a FT-2000 which also can clean up the receive just as well because it also shares the same filtering as the FT-5000 it is the little brother to the FT-5000. But I must admit the FT-DX10 has a great display and a lot of features that I know I would use when the price comes down a little I will have to pick one up.
