The LQ4 and LQ9 are probably the best 2 LS based engines to swap you are able to bore the cylinders more than aluminum blocks due to the cylinder sleeves the aluminum block contain. Plus the C.I block is great for boost. LQ4 any GM 6.0 in the heavy-duty truck line up 02 through 07 1/2. Lq9 any Vortec max I.e 03 through 06 escalade SS Silverado H2 or Denali.

i disagree with the size. it all comes down to cost. there is plenty of engines out there that are the same size and can make loads of power but nothing is cheaper to buy and build than a chevy. thats why sbc swaps were so popular till the LS came out.
In Europe we use a VAG 1.8T for swaps, 1800ccm and turbo/supercharger and more.... Because is cheaper than LS, sorry but "no replacement for displacement" in Europe is a shot in foot
Ford coyote is cheaper and makes similar power, but it's a less common swap because it's a bigger engine. Size IS a big consideration in swaps. A lot of cars simply can't easily fit a dohc v8
thats not a good comparison. better comparison is the ford small block, its the same size and can make the same power its just more expensive. even a chrysler small block is the same size but it cost more to build and swap. they dont make near the amount of swap parts as they do for chevys. its really cost 1st, size 2nd.
ford small block and ls are no where near relevantly close in cost to build. it takes about 3 to 4 times the money to build a 347 ford compared to a 347 chevy.
I put an LS1 and trans from a 2002 SS Camaro and Getrag limited slip differential from a CTS Caddy into my '97 NA Miata. Love it. Nothing like 350 hp in a 2300 lb car. I have to make an edit; Upgrading with a BTR "stage 1" cam and the proper supporting mods for 400+ hrsprs is an even mo bettah experience!
@@brockmaine2743 If you didn't watch the video, the Vortec engines are basically LS engineered made from cast iron instead of cast aluminium And it's spelling is perfect for the He protecc, he attacc meme
My grandpa has a bunch of hot rod cars, and he’s super particular about everything on them. They are as close to factory spec as you’ll find. National level awards, etc. He has a ‘55 Chevy sedan, which is 100% perfect, except for the engine. Instead of the stock one from 1955, he put a LS2 engine under the hood, cranking the old, little hot rod to 400+ WHP. One of the craziest builds I’ve ever seen.
LS swaps are mostly common in USA. Back in Europe, where common cars are mostly compacts and hatchbacks, most people swaps their stock engine with motorbikes engines (Often combined with serious weight reduction). Example : a Citroen AX with a Honda CBR 1000 engine.
@@DRendle13 I am so stoked. Any advice on traction? An Lsd is a no-brainer, but there's just *so* many other options to consider. Caltracs, slappers, ladder bars, Helwig springs, roadmasters, traction bars, 4-link...
I have the 5.3 ls in my 03 Silverado best motor I've ever had. Almost 200000 miles same coil packs only changed plugs once. Lots of power after tune headers and cold air intake. Engine restore is really good for the famous cold start knock. After my upgrades the truck has alot of bottom end torque.
Another thing that doesn’t get mentioned is that the hardware and the electronics to actually run the engine are super accessible, thanks to GM and now Holley. GM has what they call a “run kit” that they will sell you over the counter just so you can do your engine swap and now Holley has got on board and made fuel injection nearly fool proof. I just wish other manufacturers would take the hint and make their equipment more “hot rod friendly”. Looking at you Dodge and Ford.
See now here in Australia there are two main engines to use in swaps. LS or Barra, LS is V8 and Barra is in line 6. The LS has torque and is short and wide, while the Barra is built for power and stupid amounts of boost and is long and skinny. Chevy VS Ford What's your choice? Personally I'm a Holden guy so LS for me but I have to admit that the Ford Barra is a great engine.
I don’t want to be the guy that corrects everybody but when you mentioned that the 4.8 has more meat on the cylinder walls that’s not correct. It’s the same physical block as the 5.3 but it just has a shorter stroke so that’s why it has a smaller displacement.
20502chris, you are misinformed. When they calculate displacement it's the (cylinder bore) x (the stroke length) x (the number of cylinders). Both the 4.8L and the 5.3L engines have the same size bore, the difference is that the 4.8L has a shorter stroke length than the 5.3. Both engines have same cylinder bore and same piston separation so they have the same wall thickness. It's the same for say a Honda K20 vs a K24, both are 4 cylinder, but one is a 2.0L and the other is a 2.4L, both have the same bore size, it's the stroke that is different between the two.
Exactly, I love the Hotrod mag build where they took a LS and destroked it with the 4.8L crank and used some custom rods and spun the motor up to around 8K and was making something like 600hp on the engine dyno with motor sitting at 5.6L. Really makes me wish GM would make a new 350 block with that idea and stick it into a new Z28.
@@sigmaprojects sadly watch chevy commercials I love Chevrolet but they act like we're retarded and don't understand that this people are in fact paid people to say what gm wants them to say and look at all the gay little vehicles they are trying to sell. Chevy has the 6.2 now days. What other V8 do they make? If I was ceo of gm I'd be making new big blocks for trucks and I'd bring back some of the classics like a mean new 305, classic 350, a factory 383 396 400 427 454 and 496. I wish ford chevy and dodge would make BIG motors again for pickups and cars and bring back some of the muscle cars with new versions of old motors.... wow that would truly be badass
I understand you point, but the general public does not have an appeal to the 350, 400, 454, etc. Secondly, manufacturers are having to fit the mold of government regulations.
The reason why LS is used a lot in swaps is because it’s cheap power that can be found everywhere, they came in a lot of cars/trucks that are now in junk yards.
Had an LS swapped 91 foxbody GT w/ Cast iron 5.3L, ls6 heads, LSA blower and a 6L80 auto. Daily driver. Lol the guy who has it now did the 03/04 cobra IRS, fully tubed the front, roll caged it and runs it as a daily/ track car/road racer on the weekends! Wish I never sold it 😓
Which actually makes it a pain when you want to find a 5.3 in a junkyard. The first 5.3 I bought was actually a 4.8. No matter, just fed her a couple of extra PSI of boost to make up for the lower displacement.
Matt Pratt my buddy literally just made that mistake. They told him it was a 5.3 but it's really a 4.8 so just gonna turn up the boost and send it anyways

Alex Grigoryev you swap a LS in your RX7 so it reliable but you buy a RX7 if your Lan-Evo IX is too reliable
The best part about an LS Swap is all of the hurt feelings when I lift the hood of my old Ford.
Then why not just buy a Chevy and put an LS in it?

i disagree with the size. it all comes down to cost. there is plenty of engines out there that are the same size and can make loads of power but nothing is cheaper to buy and build than a chevy. thats why sbc swaps were so popular till the LS came out.
A lot of cars simply can't easily fit a dohc v8
thats not a good comparison. better comparison is the ford small block, its the same size and can make the same power its just more expensive. even a chrysler small block is the same size but it cost more to build and swap. they dont make near the amount of swap parts as they do for chevys. its really cost 1st, size 2nd.
ford small block and ls are no where near relevantly close in cost to build. it takes about 3 to 4 times the money to build a 347 ford compared to a 347 chevy.
zach miller a coyote is NOT cheaper than an ls/vortec

I wish more people out here in US would do that. I follow a few and am never disappointed, absolulty love those builds!

You ain’t really a car guy until you LS swapped a Smart Fortwo
Killa Namikaze You can't put such powerful engine in a small, tall car, it become unstable at high speed
Diogo Areias bUT you can! It’s all over RUclips. Look up LS smart car
Cameron MacDonald if you say so, I believe. I said that because smarts are tall and not very aerodynamic
Cameron MacDonald all see os smart with bike enginez
Killa Namikaze, I say an LS4 with F40 speed manual from the Pontiac G6 would be a nice combination for the smart car

LS SWAP THE WORLD!
See now here in Australia there are two main engines to use in swaps. LS or Barra, LS is V8 and Barra is in line 6.
The LS has torque and is short and wide, while the Barra is built for power and stupid amounts of boost and is long and skinny.
Chevy VS Ford
What's your choice?
Personally I'm a Holden guy so LS for me but I have to admit that the Ford Barra is a great engine.

I don’t want to be the guy that corrects everybody but when you mentioned that the 4.8 has more meat on the cylinder walls that’s not correct. It’s the same physical block as the 5.3 but it just has a shorter stroke so that’s why it has a smaller displacement.
^This guy knows his stuff^
That's not how it works 4.8l= 4,800cc bore diameter 5.3l= 5,300cc bore diameter so you shave off more to make 5.3
20502chris, you are misinformed.
20502chris you couldn’t be more wrong, the 4.8 has a shorter stroke and that’s it. Both the 4.8l and 5.3l have a 3.78” bore
So with that being said, what would be a good LS to boost if the 4.8 and 5.3 are the same thing
the 4.8 doesn’t have any more meat on the walls than a 5.3, it’s the same block, just a shorter stroke by 0.35 in.
He didn't read the brochure correctly
Exactly what I was about to say when I heard that. But his point still stands generally because 4.8 & 5.3 have the same block.

4.8s and 5.3s are the exact same block, different stroke.
