Hey bud I have a high speed hotdog critique. The dog deflected quite a bit because there was no internal skeletal structure. Also it was right on the tip, allowing it to whip back faster.
I think a more reasonable test would be to slip a wooden chopstick through a dog and then go full speed a bit farther down, like maybe an inch or two. The chopstick is about the same strangth as a finger bone.

The sawstop is one of the most amazing safety inventions ever. The amount of force they can stop and the incredible speed at which they stop the blades is jawdropping. Thousands and thousands of terrible accidents have already been avoided due to Sawstop and as it becomes a truly ubiquitous piece of technology many more livelihoods will be saved.
Probably tens of thousands of accidents if not hundreds of thousands, cumulatively over the decade(s).
Bosch system was better, it did not damaged the blade , but typical US, lawsuits by sawstop stopped it in US, so were they actually interested in safety or just making money. Now of course they let part of sawstop tech free, when consumer safety start to mandate sawstop from all table saw ... you are going back to people rigging circular saw to the tabletops, when cheapest table saw is over €1000.
We in Europe enjoy freedom and use all the dangerous saws that Americans cant handle and can only dream of , like table mitre saw combos. 🙂
@@pete_lind Bosch chose to infringe on the patent rather than pay to license it, and after defending their patent sawstop gave them a license. Bosch were not the good guys here but it makes a good story for the poor saw maker lobbyists that want to jump into the tech for free 20 years later.

@@hughduffel There are double the amount consumers in Europe that in US and there no report 120 000 people getting injured by table saws , EU would regulate it. I bought Makita 14" cut off saw , its 1kg/2ibs heavier than US version, because the blade guard is bigger and i am considering buying makita LH1201 , 12" combo miter/table saw , banned in US for free market , also DeWalt (D27112-QS has sliding miter saw) , Bosch , Metabo a.s.o have models . Bosch system did not sell when consumers did not need it and Bosch would had licensed it . Always they use some case of person that used table saw without blade guard , yeah most injuries would have been prevented by security devise that user removed , thats what happens to SawStop , one blade and most wont replace it .

My aging father still uses the table saw he bought in the 1980’s and has had some close calls. This machine is incredible.

Even with those people saying things like, “going to slow” or “they wouldn’t work that well”, there is one fact that remains. A blade that stops at all when a finger gets caught in it is better than no auto stop at all.
True and it’s clear that it stops much faster than human reaction time. Sometimes people take minutes to realize they have been cut. Some of the comments on this video are giving me new appreciation for my fingertips 😬

Perfect for small projects. Not got a lot of power so if the wood starts to flex it stops the saw pretty easy. Use it for small tasks and you will be happy. My best friend has one of this in his workshop. One time I was helping him doing some cutting and suddenly the sawstop activated itself without any visible reason. When I took a look closer I realized that inside the wood was an old and rusty nail.

I've used these saw's for many years and i can tell you firsthand it has saved multiple people from danger. These are high quality, well made saws.
This is one of the best advertisements I’ve ever seen. With 22 million views I take it I’m not alone. I hope you were paid handsomely for your effort. I say that with complete sincerity. Your video clearly demonstrated that this device should be widely adopted in mills and wood shops everywhere. I brought this video to the attention of my manager (I work in a medium sized wood shop building custom windows and doors) but of course I was told the cost was prohibitive ( unfortunately I work in Florida). In my 13 years in the shop I’ve witnessed one person cut off two fingers and seen two other serious injuries on the table saw.
So the sawstops, not a good option for cutting hotdogs then?

Lets hold off on the nobel prize considering they patented it and made it an exclusive tech and then gouged up the prices. Now that their patent is coming to an end, the prices are plumetting as they prepare to compete which shows they chose fat, fat margins over helping people and still making a lot of money. They were prohibitively expensive and inaccessible since they didn’t have to compete with anyone.

I found this video because I saw a video of CMT dado locked blades. It's because of you tubers like you Jonathan that people like me are made more aware of possible accidents in the shop. You are making everyone more safety conscious and I thank you for that. I was shocked at the carbide flying off when activated by the safety stop on the saw stop. I'll be buying a CMT dado for my shop for sure.

at my old woodshop class we didn't have these, we just had the woodshop teacher running at 60 mph towards the saw because his internal "my dumbass student is about to get their goddamn thumb cut off" alarm went off

My dad's classmate got like a third of a finger and the tip of another cut off, he flicked his hand around because he thought he just nicked it but when he put his hand back on the wood his finger was across the class, he couldn't feel it because it cut it so fast
I use a table saw a few times a week sometimes for hours at a time. It is really a tool to respect and keep aware of at ALL times. I am very impressed. I know a handful of people that have lost hand fulls of fingers in them

i actually already tested this machine unintentionally. and let me tell you i did bleed from it. but the cut was very minor. im glad we have this in our shop. it saved my finger.

After nicking my finger on my Ryobi table saw a couple of years ago, I haven't had the courage to use a table saw again. I just bought the Sawstop Compact Table saw and I'm ready to rip! Love the video. Jonathan rocks!
That technology is amazing. I remember as a kid watching something about a baby who lost all her fingers in a paper shredder. It's incredible how far safety has advanced.

Back in like 2001 or 2002, I was in my high school shop class when a friend of mine was using a dado stack on the table saw and it kicked back on him, pulling his hand into the blade and literally grinding his pinky finger down to the first knuckle and his ring finger down the the second knuckle. Had these saws existed back then he wouldn't have lost his fingers. So I definitely feel that they NEED to make this the standard on ALL table saws.

My high school has one of these in the wood shop. It's been set off a couple of times since I've been there.
I lost my index, middle, ring finger on my left hand. Also had my thumb reconstructed using the remains of the ring finger and sawed through the little finger leaving it hanging by skin.
Woke up 3 days later and the saw stop was being talked about on whatever show was on in my ICU room.
God has a sense of humor.

This really should be required in shops used for education. I recall many years ago taking a woodshop class in a middle school where students were using the table saw on a daily basis, and I always felt that was less than safe. That class was certainly not without accidents and this would improve the safety immensely
It activates when an electrical resistance is sensed. This will happen when you feed wet wood, nails, hotdogs or body parts into it.

Well if everything goes accordingly nobody will have their hands or fingers chopped off, main reason the accident happens is because one's hand slipped and pushed their fingers or hands into the saw or their clothing got caught and pulled their hand or fingers into the saw... if you are chopping off your fingers or hands while it's moving at super slow speed towards the saw, you probably better off without those limbs since you obviously can't feel anything u dumb fck!

I've heard the "you were pushing too slow" argument before, my response is: just how fast are you pushing material through your saw?
Your high speed push was very impressive and convincing, but it really isn't needed since no one can even push wood through a saw that fast. Actually trying to cut wood that fast would cause a whole other set of problems...

The fast push through the blade answered this to my satisfaction. You would endure some damage but most likely not an amputation.
@@mktsmith62 I think Jimmy DiResta cut his finger off once. Said the bill was $15,000. And a new SawStop saw is around $3-4,000. I'd say it justifies it if you use the table saw daily
The speed is excessive but it proves how even in an unrealistically worst-case scenario, your finger will still stay attached. It's not too often where you go way beyond what a product was meant to handle and it still does what it intends to do.
You can't push material thru the saw that fast but during a kickback scenario your hand could certainly be thrown into the blade that fast.
I remember seeing the first sawstop videos years ago when it was coming to market, good to see the company has been successful with their great invention
They succeeded by manufacturing the saws themselves. They wanted extortionist fees for licensing the technology to other companies - so they are the only maker. Now that their 20 year patents are about to run out - they are both trying to get the patents extended and get the CPSC to mandate similar technologies on all table saws sold in the USA.
So, regardless of how good the Sawstop saw may be, I detest the patent owners. From the beginning it has appeared that they care more about the money than actual saw user safety.
Impressive safety features ... These are the things that geniuses should be working on. Just amazing.

My mom passed 2 years ago and 6 months after, my dad cut off 2 separate fingers in 1 month in his woodshop using his table saw. He’s 84 and my sisters wanted to lock up all his tools…instead we bought him a Sawstop. He’s activated it twice and just laughs about it saying glad we bought it. It truly has saved him and definitely well worth it.
I hope he has no other tools. Having cut off 2 fingers and triggered a table saw twice already makes me believe that your dad should not be in a workshop anymore.

@@EnrikaGames I thought it looked impossible to me so i went back and watched the clip again. It actually seems it didn't break due to G force but rather by hitting other teeth parallel to it. The "shockwave" probably caused the blade to wobble sideways slightly, resulting in a small overlap between the teeth and thus being able to hit one another. It still does look incredible though.

I'm amazed in all the years my dad did handyman work, he never lost a finger. He did cut his leg open with a skillsaw, though. His reaction was so funny. He calls me into the room and says, very calmly, like he's asking me to hold a flashlight for him, "I want you to have your mother call 9-1-1. Tell her she doesn't need to worry, but I need an ambulance. Don't let her come in here, because she'll worry too much."

@@smutnejajo5149 I don't know about other people and I've never been like horribly injured but when I get hurt my mind instantly moves to making sure people around me don't panic. I personally know how bad my injury is but other people don't. If I'm not careful about my reaction everyone around me might freak out and that can make things much worse. My reaction to pain is different when I'm all alone as opposed to when I'm around people. That's just how my brain works and it seems like maybe there father is similar, he didn't want his wife to freak out.
Regardless of any criticisms, this is simply an invention that makes life better.
Even at high speed, which most folks won’t be doing anyway, the results were impressive.
Not just about cutting speed, as others have pointed out tripping scenarios and kickback, but yes very impressive how far that tech has come since my days of working at bayliner.

@@naverilllang actually, when something happens very quickly, it's possible to not notice it. I have a mouse and sometimes her instincts activate and she gets really spooked of literally nothing - i get nibbed and sometimes it's pretty bad.
Anyway, i don't feel the pain until about a few minutes after because it happens so fast and it's hard to spot the bite until blood pours out or your finger starts throbbing. Sometimes I don't notice it at all until I see all the blood - that's when it starts to hurt.
Well, maybe it's just me and people do actually immediately feel injuries but I think that if you got a brief adrenaline rush after activating the saw stop then you wouldn't feel the pain as much either until your heart stopped beating as fast.
@@naverilllang Losing a finger is the lucky cenario. I've met ppl who got the hand pulled by the saw, slicing it in half to the arm. Things get really ugly.

There's a job site version of this saw that's just under 1k, if you do this professionally it's probably worth the investment. Hospital visits aren't cheap.
You did a great service to the woodworking community Jonathan! Great job! I got the blade on my finger 20 years ago. It was about 1/8th and went into the fingernail. I can still see the scar and it did do nerve damage. So what does that mean? If I think about it, especially when I type, I can tell it happened. Very similar to what a callus feels like on your palm of foot. So no big deal. I'll be glad to email a photo if any geeks want to see. FYI, I stopped using a table saw for about 15 years. Now I'm back and use my GRR-RIPPER 3D Pushblock (GR-100) - MICROJIG. (That's not a paid endorsement. Yes, mine has cut marks but not on my fingers, thank God!

helping in my home, already old, he decided to trim down a bit a wood door with a large table saw
nobody realized a nail was inside the wood. when the blade hit the nail , the whole table shook violently and my dad's hand ended up on the blade
he lost 4 fingers. I never forgive myself about this. Would be great to have had this device 15 years ago.

I have no particular interest in woodworking or table saws, but it's always fascinating to listen to someone talk about something they're passionate about, such as hot dogs and continuing to have fingers.
Table saw is the only tool I'm scared of- kickbacks can be real nasty, even if you're careful about touching the blade it can still shoot wood at you crazy fast. The amount of power going through those things is crazy.

Which is how fast your hand will be moving, if you're cutting a piece of wood on a sawblade. Unless you're practicing your karate on active circular saws, you have no reason to complain.
As others have said, sure when using the tool you wont be moving that fast, but what if someone trips or something?

Okay, first, Jonathan kind of proves that even at VERY fast speed, it DOES stop the blade. Yeah, you're not slapping a band-aid on it and calling it good, but you're not losing the fingers either. But more importantly, considering what a table saw WITHOUT this tech would do to your hand in that same circumstance, ANYTHING would be better than nothing, even IF it didn't perform as well as it does in Jonathan's demonstration.
To me this is like complaining that a seat belt won't save your life if you crash into a concrete barrier at 100mph, so it's not "worth it". That is probably true (not in the Saw Stop case, but let's go with it for now), but how many times do you actually expect that to happen versus the kinds of incidents it IS designed to save you from?
PS I'm not saying YOU'RE making the argument against the Saw Stop, just that the complainers who do are kinda stupid.

Minor damage in this case being not bone. If you have an accident in the workshop and all you need are stitches, that's minor. I remember my highschool woods teacher showing us a metal cabinet on the wall behind the tablesaw. The cabinet had deep dents all over it from pieces of wood getting shot back from kickback.
