- Filmed on 21/02/2023. Keeping up with the once-a-month outings, we travel for the first time since 2020 to Lancashire via The Bentham Line. With also a mini sightseeing and look around.
Starting the journey at Scarborough, we catch the 05:48 Transpennine Express class 185 (vice Nova 3) service to York. Most of the Nova 3's during this week were based at Longsight and temporary out of service. At York and a rather nice change from the class 195, we ride on board 07:07 Northern class 158 Cummins service to Leeds via Garforth. This was a very busy morning commute service to Leeds for the morning peak rush hour.
At Leeds, its a switch away from Cummins to Perkins power as we travel along The Bentham Line on board the 08:19 Northern service to Morecambe via Lancaster. The stunning sights of the Yorkshire Dales crossing into Lancashire now see's frequent services running every 2 hours via The Bentham Line. At Lancaster, the train would switch ends to then travel along the Morecambe branch to the seaside resort town of Morecambe. We had a little bit of time to get some sightseeing done. Also, can see along the Cumbrian Coast Mountains heading into the Lake District.
Next, we then caught the 11:16 Northern class 156 service through to Lancaster which works on regular Morecambe shuttle services throughout the day. We get straight to work with a good hour or so trainspotting at Lancaster with plenty of passenger variety in action. Avanti West Coast has restrained their services via Birmingham New Street which either continues or starts from Edinburgh/Glasgow Central.
Continuing along our way along the West Coast Mainline, we catch the late running 12:50 Northern class 195 service which is working to Manchester Airport (riding as far as Preston) But, all was not well with the class 195 as the train was running at reduced speed due to an engine failure so running on 2 engines rather than 3. At Preston and after a good lunch and Costa Coffee, we had an epic 90 minutes roughly trainspotting at Preston with plenty of freight in action as well.
Next, we then catch the 16:24 Northern class 156 (ex East Midlands Railway unit) to our final station of the day being Blackburn. Blackburn is a junction railway station which see's the lines branching off to Colne and via Settle & Carlisle. A big highlight is DRS class 68 which works a freight to Crewe. I was hoping to get automated announcements but oddly were not working at this station. Nevertheless, plenty of passenger action of mixed Sprinters and CAF workings.
Finally, we catch the 17:04 Northern service through to Leeds via Bradford Interchange. The original plan was to ride to York but having checked the times, I decided to change at Leeds for the train to Scarborough. We catch the late running 19:34 Transpennine Express class 185 (vice Nova 3) service direct to Scarborough. Its inbound journey, the train ran via Castleford.

A brilliant video Ricky. Thank you for uploading this. 🎉
Thanks very much, happy to hear you have enjoyed it :-)
It looks like you had a fun day Ricky, I have certainly enjoyed watching.
Incidentally, my very first train journey as a 3 month old baby was a day trip from Leeds to Scarborough & for the next 10 years, it was a journey I regularly took with my family. That was the beginning of my interest in the railways. Thank you once again for sharing. 😊
That has been a fun day to have done Richard. Wow Richard, I can imagine there were quite unique railway journeys from Leeds to Scarborough you rode on.
Thanks for your kind comments Richard :-)
@@RickyNowis Yes they were great days. In those days, all services between Leeds & Scarborough were first generation DMU's. I loved riding on them & they are my favourite vintage trains to this day.
amazing video ricky
Thank you Rafe :-)
I was pleased to see you got two freight on film at Preston, that first one Hams Hall to Mossend doesn't go that way anymore.
Thanks Mike, I was delighted to have seen some freight variety in action at Preston and Blackburn. I was quite surprised of that intermodal working but that was the working according to Real Time Trains.
There’s a Lancashire Day Ranger but never seen the round robin one before
That is right, there is a Lancashire Day Ranger. There isn't a Lancashire Round Robin ticket. Its improvised title name as I travelled via Lancaster, Preston and Blackburn. Hence for the title Lancashire Round Robin :-)
👍
Thanks Paul :-)
