    I saw one of the first Corvettes to hit the dealers showrooms in1953. Oh I wanted it so bad ! But I was a soldier and soon to be sent to Korea. The price was $ 3000.00 give or take. Some years later, I walked into the showroom and fell in love with the 62. Now they were $4800.00 Well, I still couldn't afford it but I bought it anyway. There were budget problems, but no regrets. it was gorgeous looking from any view and could kick ass with anything on the street, it was red, and now, only a memory, BUT I LIVED MY DREAM.............. You can too.

      john francis That`s some sound economical advice you got there.... "If you see a car you want but can`t afford it,buy it anyway" Seriously,did you catch shrapnel with your head in Korea or something? Your advice to kids is to get into debt they can never get out of so they can "live their dream" to drive a car they can`t afford 2-3 years while in their teens? You were shipped to Korea in 53,so you`re in your late 70`s now? And this is the advice you`re giving to kids?? "Get in over your heads in debt buying a cool car". I seriously doubt a 70+ year old man sits on You Tube (with a scull as a thumbnail no less) telling kids to get into debt they can`t handle. I`m calling bullshit on your whole Korea/Corvette story

      That '59 Stingray (8:20) instantly reminded me of the Mark 5 racecar - and usually heroics car - driven by Speed Racer, in the cleverly eponymous television cartoon series. It lacks the cartoon car's lethally pointed 'guards (fenders), but the long raised feature line over each wheel is certainly similar.

    • @kurtl8425
      @kurtl8425 5 лет назад +9

      They can’t make new retro versions. The classics are death traps by modern standards. After all the changes you’d have to make to the design to get them on the road they’d barely resemble the originals.

    • @ohmyblindman
      @ohmyblindman 5 лет назад +7

      It was tried with the T-bird. What a flop. It's an idea that sounds good, but doesn't even look good on paper. The major car manufacturers need to sell many thousands of units and there just aren't enough people in the market for the nostalgia mobile.

    • @CrazyBear65
      @CrazyBear65 4 года назад +5

      Unfortunately, due to Big Brother's fascist rules, all new cars have to have "crumple zones" and airbags, and ridiculously restrictive emissions devices. Thing to do is take the old vehicle, with the vin, and then add some modern brakes, suspension, etc. That way it's still titled as an older vehicle, so they can't make you put airbags etc. in it.

    Jay...I felt like a kid in a candy store watching this! I used to own a 1971 454 LS5 but for me the ultimate Corvettes will always be the mid 60's. They turn heads where ever they go. The '63 split back in particular is poetry on wheels. You look at it, your mouth drops open and you start to drool! As far as the '59 race car is concerned I've only seen one B&W picture until now so to see and hear it in living colour on high res. is the icing on the cake! So from one gearhead to another thanks!

    I'm surprised how little Ed knew about the '53. 300 were built, all red, white and blue. Red sportsman interior, with a two speed powerglide tranny on the floor, polo white body and that 150 HP blue flame six. Of course, you've got all three colours in those lovely hub caps. Built in Flint, MI before the long run in St Louis until 1981. At least he was up to speed on the other cars, and he deserves saint hood for restoring the first Stingray (or is it Sting Ray?), and bringing back that historical moniker for the C7, including the logo!

    Love this channel. Like someone else mentioned.. his garage is like a museum. Jay doesn't come across as arrogant or pompous when showing his cars either. He has a genuine love of cars and you can tell he wants to share it with people.
    And for those who are jealous of wealthy people...instead of complaining.. go work hard and make yourself wealthy and stop complaining. Jay donates quite a bit to charity too btw.

T-40 4 speed, posi-trac rear end, solid lifters, etc) rebuilt a lot of it including the Rochester unit with parts from Jack Podell and Corvette Central. +tinsane73 a bit bulkier and fuller looking body. i like them better too. the 58-62's were too whispy and thin looking. almost like a tall skinny nerdy kid with glasses.

    I met Jay Leno once in Las Vegas before he was about to shoot something. He is the most down-to-earth honest genuine person, let alone celebrity. It's sad that there is only one Jay Leno around, because by god we could use more of them.

      Welburn said in the video that the '59 racer was driven by Elvis in "Clambake". It must have been repainted. Clambake is my favorite Elvis movie, partially because of the Corvette! (But the vintage race boats are cool, too.)

      The '59 Stingray was altered many times in it's life as Mr. Welburn pointed out. Different engines and paint. It was a working race car and test bed for GM. It was in fact painted red at one time in it's years. Here is a link to Bill Mitchell with it when it was red.
      en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corvette_Stingray_(concept_car)#/media/File:Bill_Mitchell_(automobile_designer).JPEG.jpg
      There is and was only one '59 stingray. Thanks to Jay for starting this car up. I've seen a thousand photos but never heard it run. Leno's Garage is better than all of the car mags put together.
