The man that truly anchored the music, gave GG their groove and who played exactly what was needed to give their music that rock solid feel. Impeccable taste and unimpeachable quality drumming from a mostly unsung hero!
The Master! John takes a back seat to no one and is absolutely original. His signature sound is indisputable and creativity infectious. He is easily in my list of top 10 drummers along with the likes of Joe Morello, Buddy Rich, and Simon Phillips.
As a former drummer who learned from the jazz and rock greats, I remember when John joined the band on the fourth album Octopus and I was immediately blown away by his unusual approach to the songs and his syncopated cymbal strikes etc. IMHO, he ranks above Ringo and Mooney and can take his place alongside Bonzo Bonham, Ian Paice, Bill Bruford or Alan White. 🥁📀
A great rock drummer who gave gentle giant much needed power. On top with Bonham for sure. And yes so hilarious it always a fun to watch his playing and mimics.
@@williamjueschke9960 Zappa started out his career playing the drums. He's even shown in 200 Motels (the movie) playing the drums. He's not that bad but tremendously underrated. (I was being a bit sarcastic) I loved Weathers style. Kind of like Aynsley Dunbar.
Great player, whose style joined seamlessly with Ray Shulman's bass lines, thus creating the most furtile soil the polyphonic garden of delight that Gentle Giant was could grow on.
This is from "Gentle Giant German TV ZDF 1974 - Live Brussels Film Studio" which can still be found on RUclips. Also, I think you can get DVDs of the band during that era from their website or fan websites.

John owns it. What a killer drummer, a powerhouse. Very precise and full of groove. I met him once, a real gentleman and a humble human being.

And what would have happened if Dunbar said yes to LZ when offered the gig.
A very underrated drummer.
Zappa was an underrated drummer. Not Weathers.

Sir, you've done what I was going to do like last two-three years, but was too lazy for that!
Pugwash! The satin top finishes it off nicely...

Every time Weathers plays it means something.
Face time with Mr. Pugwash Weathers. Only way to keep Giant time.
Great drummer, he is really into the music. Back in the days when talent counted.
A man who enjoy his shit! Great!!
Fuckin' excellent drummer!
LOVE him ad his playing!
Lovely and vigorous.

He was the gamechanger!! Best drummer in progrock....Not a chops show off, he showed off his musical IQ. Very rare these days.....
So how then is it prog?!?!?! Malcome was their best drummer
Ok, you are correct.

JW is a great drummer!
He was perfect for GG!!!!👍🥁
I'm dying.
Puggy had no experience with progressive music going into GG. A pretty fair adjustment.
Great. he could play the glokinthings aswell.
Big time
Anyone know the source of the video?

Qué Genial!
Not much of a compilation. One song just chopped up.
Its a compilation of his appearances in the video

@@tixximmi I think it was meant as a compilation of John's funny faces while playing.
