Amor Desdémona yes! I got tripped up by a series with totally fine reviews, plenty of 4s and 5s and it was awful. I just kept going because I thought the ratings meant it had to get better 😂😂 and soon I was too far in. And it was awful.
That’s why I’d recommend reading some the one star reviews aswell, the way people write their comments can give you a pretty good impression of whether you would agree with them and if they have the same taste :) Still had a few disappointments because I relied on goodreads, though 😩

I think the term you were struggling for was "sample size" meaning that you needed to increase the size of the population reading said book to justify the rating, rather than having an average rating based on 2 people.

I'm so...baffled by Palahniuk. When I was in high school I used to worship the guy -- Invisible Monsters was the first book I read that had a trans character in it, and the whole book seemed so fresh and exciting and cruel and I adored the structure and the narration style. And I kept reading his books and noticed that they're... all the fucking same. First person narrator makes themselves hit rock bottom to be able to understand that consumerism = Bad and the USA = not that great. Shocking stuff gets thrown in along the way. And then I realised that what I thought to be trans representation was just... part of the Shocking Stuff. An oddity. A *freakshow* element. And got so disgusted by the realisation that I never read anything by him again. Don't even get me started on how he treats every single female character ever. I don't know about authorial intent or whatever. He's a gay guy. I hear he's super nice to fans. Down-to-earth. Whatever. But his books are... gross. Not shocking, or edgy, just gross. As if he just wrote everything down he knows he shouldn't. But we have some taboos for a reason. It just feels like he's disrespecting his readers and want to see how much we can take, and then mock us for having empathy and a degree of decency?? Idk.
i still love Invisible Monsters for some of the quotes, but i re-read it recently and had a lot of issues with the trans representation myself. it's really really making me rethink whether or not the book is worth holding up as an example of good writing. i'm nonbinary, but i'm not a trans woman so i can't speak on the representation REALLY, and i would never argue with a trans woman's opinion on it. still, i got the same vibe you did. a lot. in a way, given when it was written, transgressive authors would really be the only people writing about trans issues. i appreciate that it was and is a taboo subject for many. that being said, i really think it wasn't....... great...... and i think people deserve better than to be written about solely as a punch line or "gotcha"

That sentence from the Claire Messud book! I laughed so hard, why is it so complicated and long? I read a book by Claire Messud called The Woman Upstairs randomly because I saw it at the library. Absolutely nothing happened in it. When I finished it, I was left wondering why anyone felt it necessary to write that book. It had no point whatsoever. I love this video! The Emperor's Children sounds like a book my college creative writing class would hail as the best book ever written; literally everyone's stories in that class were written with a similar tone.

My mom and I saw that in the theater the day it came out. I was probably about 14 and deeply in my Twilight feelings and we sat through the whole movie, which we honestly enjoyed up until the last 5 minutes when we noticed the date on the blackboard in the classroom and realized it was 9/11. Cue the entire theater errupting in screams of outrage. Someone threw their popcorn at the screen. It was great and we still talk about this in the rare occurrence we come across 'Remember Me' on cable.
an alternative to the almost moon, for family dynamics and mental illness is The Girl In Between. It's drastically different from the almost moon, but its incredibly good and shows off mental illness and mother daughter relationships.
I feel like Goodreads eviews usually skew too high--books that I think are trash get 4/5 stars. So maybe you could pick the highest rated books and see if they are as good as the ratings suggest? Just an idea!

ive seen Fight Club and read Guts, so other than your review thats all i have to go on. I think, maybe in some cases a lot of his work is like...cringegore. Or whatever the name for overly disgusting and purposely uncomfortable would be. I felt like Fight Club and Guts had some purpose to them. ive seen Fight Club and read Guts, so other than your review thats all i have to go on. I think, maybe in some cases a lot of his work is like...cringegore. Or whatever the name for overly disgusting and purposely uncomfortable would be. I felt like Fight Club and Guts had some purpose to them. Like hey...practice safe masturbation methods, check your curiousity. That book sounds like...it was just a dump for every horrible thing he thought he could some up with. Like A Series of Unfortunate Events, but for adults. theres no happy ending or redemption. Bad things happen, bad people exist, the end.
