- Around 7 pm or so May 20, 2014 a pod of about 8 killer whales entered Pender Harbour (the loud sound of them blowing alerted us) and were feeding around channel markers for awhile (must be salmon around!) and then went further into harbour towards Madeira Park centre. It was a quiet evening with not one boat around. I threw in my rowboat (almost falling in as I jumped in, as I as in a hurry and did not want to miss the action) and rowed across the harbour near the Skardon Islands to wait for them to leave the harbour. Took a quick shot of a seal while I waited, and was lucky to get a few shots of the orcas when they left the harbour about 40 minutes later. It was an amazing thing to experience! Another boater and I were counting them when they left (they went between Charles and Williams Islands) and reckoned there were about 8 orcas! Sorry the film was shaky, I was in a tiny rowboat most of the time and I was pretty excited. We really do live in paradise.
