Deep Halder is correct about India's diversity. India's internal diversity is comparable to the diversity of the rest of the world combined. India has a thousand languages. And perhaps 5 million different ethnic groups with different distinct cultures. Many of these cultures are very different from each other. And are more similar to Silicon Valley, California, than they are to many other cultures inside India.
I think this might make dealing with rape difficult, because it comes across as demonizing a specific subgroup or ethnicity or culture. And then the Indian woke make a huge fuss.
The USA has similar problems, which has led to a large increase in per capita rape in recent decades. It is difficult to discuss because Americans who oppose prisons and police don't like discussions of rape.

I like how people are asking silly questions about rapes in India as if there are no rapes in the so-called developed countries. Rape in India happens exactly for the same reasons rape happens in America or Japan. Rape is a primal instinct and can happen anywhere anytime just like murder or burglary no matter how many rules and laws are in place. It is exacerbated by drugs and porn industry and sustained by toxic masculinity and social conditions.

The perpetrators of the crime against Nirbhaya were fast-tracked through the courts, and the adult rapists given the death penalty. Hopefully the Kolkata doctor rape-murder case will also see speedy justice, as it has received much media attention. It’s good to see nationwide agitation, and calls for Prime Minister Narendra Modi to give support. Hopefully he will, as it is the central government which can ‘set the tone’ for India’s treatment of females.

Rapes per capita in India are below levels in the USA and UK.
Suspect rapes per capita are higher among some subgroups. But because of wokeness and political correctness, studying this phenomenon is difficult. And we don't fully know which subgroups are engaging in rape in many countries.
In India rape has been one of the top 5 political issue continually since at least the 1970s. And it is a dominant issue in every Indian election since the 1970s that I am familiar with. This massive emphasis on reducing rape is a positive sign.

However, in this interview the term "massacre" is an exaggerated term used. There was a massacre of Hindus in Bangladesh (then part of undivided India) in October 1946 Noalkhali as there was a massacre of Muslims in the Gujrat riots in 2002. There had been attacks on Hindus in Bangladesh, quite widespread, in 2001. Currently, following Hasina's fall, there have been attacks on Hindu property, and at times on Hindu lives but branding this situation as a "massacre" is stretching the definition of massacre.

48:00 It's simple... we are still a largely agrarian-feudal society, with the mores of a pre-industrial culture and all the related identity-based discrimination that comes with it. Now take that and mix it with veneer of modern urban life, you get a gross reaction more often than in other places. Combine that with shockingly poor policing.

    • @AnAn___

Many of the agrarian societies are also matriarchies. I don't think they are the problem when it comes to rape.
Isn't rape primarily in urban phenomenon of young men who want to free themselves of the shackles of the community matriarchs and matriarchy? Perhaps influenced by modern culture (rap) etc.?
Which ethnic groups in India do you think commit disproportionate rape? Which regions? My observation is that rape varies greatly by ethnic group and region.
In the UK, a lot of rapes are performed by conservative sunni punjabi mirpuris. What are the equivalents in India committing rape?

Woah, that was some rambling mental gymnastics from Deep Halder regarding sexual violence in India. I’m Australian, female, and have been travelling in India for over 30 years. Since taking early retirement I’ve been staying for six months every year in many different states. The big change in India happened around the time that the BJP government under Narendra Modi was elected. He gave impetus to young Hindu men to be forceful and superior. India is also horribly corrupt. For example, if a wealthy politician’s son rapes and even kills a foreign or local girl (to stop her talking and identifying him), the police will be paid a hefty bribe and then pin the crime on some man from a lower caste who can’t defend himself under the law. It’s disgusting.
About nine years ago I reported a sexual assault, when a young Hindu man forced his way into my hotel room in Mysore. He locked the door, and tried to tear my clothes off in preparation for rape. An elderly Australian-Slovakian man witnessed what was happening to me through the open window to my room, but it was an American girl, who had watched the young Hindu guy tracking foreign girls as they went through hotel reception to their rooms, who was the only person brave enough to rescue me. Hotel security people were very good and they called the police who took me, the American girl, and the young Hindu man to the police station. There was even what seemed like a confession and an apology from the young man, but it went nowhere. The male police officer made me sign a blank statement, then said the young man would be held overnight and prosecuted in court. But the next day I enquired and he seemed to have been released so I suspect a bribe was paid by his family. There are very few female police officers, and the ratio of police to public is still extremely low in India, so this journalist seems to be an apologist for Hinduism.
Gang rape and mob intimidation by Hindus is now very prevalent in India, however I never experienced it under Manmohan Singh’s presidency. When I ask Hindus what their ideology teaches them about honesty and attitudes to women, they say it’s all about karma. You do what you can get away with but you face your karma in the next life. Indians used to quote this lovely phrase to me, “guest is God”, but that’s now meaningless. Indians are hugely racist against other Indian groups, especially those of a darker skin colour or of less education or ‘culture’, and if they are from the ‘wrong’ religious group. They are also caste-ist and misogynistic. The rape laws have changed for the better, but neither Hindu nor Muslim personal law considers rape in marriage a crime. Until marital rape becomes a crime, I doubt that females will be treated better.
I hope that one day a more balanced government will be returned to power. India is the one country I travel in where I don’t fear anything bad from Muslim men. The Muslims in India that I know well have a much stronger code of honour and honesty compared with the Hindu men, though I’m still very critical of Islam as an ideology.

So, basically I have a completely different expression to yours. A few years ago I visited Bengal and was assaulted in the metro by a Bangladeshi Muslim immigrant which I reported but to no avail. The Mamata Banerjee government there protect πapist when they are his party workers and Muslim. Now listening to the doctor being gang πaped and murdered by political goons of Mamata Banerjee in reputed state government hospital in Kolkata.

I’m sorry you didn’t achieve any justice. It’s not surprising that we have quite different experiences though because we are from very different backgrounds. Unfortunately vote-bank politics is now increasing in Western democracies too, such as in UK, US, Australia and Canada. It’s not easy to get accurate statistics but rape per capita is still quite low in India, however when it does happen it’s often violent and frequently involves gangs. And the legal process is quite corrupt and not transparent. If the Prime Minister could step in and set a strong example of prosecuting ALL men who commit sexual violence against females I think it would help a lot.

Please do not mix everything and say that all RELIGIONS !! - Juda, christianity, Islam, HINDU, Buddhist, jain etc. ISLAM is not RELIGION. ISLAM is called MAZHAB/DEEN/Ideology. christianity is RELIGION. sanatana/hindu/Buddhist/jain are DHARMIC philosophy based spiritual paths. All people should make this distinction. they are different. evrything is not a RELIGION.

what is SANATANA DHARMA (HINDU - Hindu is a Geographical term ,not religion . There is no such thing as "HINDU" "RELIGION". Both these terms are given, imposed by foreign , outside rulers.
what is SANATANA DHARMA ( HINDU)?- IS A dharmic PHILOSOPHY based spiritual path, search for truth , which raises human conscience & consciousness to a higher level leading to self realization and seeing God in all - the creation.

DEEP & YASMINE - please note. Bangladesh is an ISLAMIC theocracy - officially ISLAMIC . so, unwritten understanding is that Bdesh should follow ISLAMIC tenets, sharia rules. So, everything you talk should be explained , seen in light of QURAN/HADEES/SIRA. Otherwise you will not make much sense.
