Yep. Simple yet containing a whole bunch of practical features: the separate housing for the bolt to reduce the chances of it getting gunked up; extra space between the bolt and end of the chamber, to reduce the chances of it getting gunked up; top mounted mag to assist with ammo feed, and if does, the debris drops straight out ..to reduce the chance of it getting gunked up. (For some reason, when fighting in wet and muddy jungles the Aussies value a gun that won’t get gunked up). Plus double hand grips, a good cyclic rate of fire (600 rounds a minute) and accurate side mounted sights made it very controllable. While 33 rounds per mag of easily obtained and light-to-carry 9mm ammo allowed them to drench the enemy with lead when they needed to. All that with selective fire, cheap to produce, lightweight, sturdy and a 1907 bayonet for close quarters work. Best jungle/desert SMG of the war - “the Digger’s Darling”.
The key innovation in this gun is the separate compartment inside the receiver, isolating the small-diameter bolt from its retracting handle. In addition the casings are ejected vertically down, not horizontally. This means the gun is highly resistant to jamming from contaminants like dirt and sand getting into the firing mechanism. It meant the Owen could be completely immersed in deep mud and when retrieved would continue to fire normally, making it ideal for jungle conditions.
