This is how I clip the nails of my German Shepherd Dog. I basically try to: Keep it relaxed Clip down to the quick Walk her after to keep them filed down Enjoy!
Finally someone shows how to actually trim the nails. Omgoodness I have been sooo afraid to cut my germ shep nails because I can't see the quik and where to stop. I don't wanna hurt my baby. This helped me soo much. I cut her nails while watching your video. It helped. She layer down and let me. Now some did chip. So I filed it down. This video has been save. Thank you sir.!
I just conducted a search for GSD nail trimming and I’m glad I came across your channel. This is the first year that both of my Shepherds nails are a little to long. My biggest fear is cutting to far and striking the nerve. I’ve considered using a dog nail grinder but I don’t think either would like it but it would be easier for me. Thanks again and she’s a beautiful dog. My two are also seven years old, both born in 2011. Subscribed.
All About Shepherds - My pleasure and again, thank you. Due to what I learned upon watching this video, I decided to use a clipper and I was a little nervous at first but I used small steps by trimming just a little nail at a time until they no longer we hitting the concrete. My female was more cooperative and now that her nails are trimmed, she appears to be in a much better mood and play like she used to be. My male is less tolerant, so it took a few attempts to complete his. Grinders, in my opinion, appear to be a safe method and I would prefer using it. Unfortunately, it takes longer and I don’t know if either of my dogs will have the patience for it, but I would like to try. Once again, thank you and my two GSDs thank you. Please keep the videos coming. They are great.
Thank you for this video I recently rescued a long haired german shepherd ❤😊 & he wasn't being cared for properly! But he's just as calm/sweet will be using this method!
WOW! She's so calm. I'm having to deal with my baby being foot shy after I took him to the vet and they did his nails. It was the WORST hatchet job I've ever seen! He was in for a check up due to an infection. They asked if I wanted them to be cut since they knew I did them often. When they took him in the back for his trim my husband was in the office with me. To make a long story short I heard his screaming from the back. I listened to him going on and thought, "What the heck!" When I heard him he was obviously in pain. I walked to the back thinking ,"Eh, maybe he moved and gt snipped a bit too short." As I passed through the door there were two vet techs holding him in a bear ! He was between 2 counters that were about hallway length apart. The 3rd girl had the clippers. Mind you we trained him from day one not to be shy about nail days. The floor between the counters was soaked in blood! They decided to tell me to go back to the room after I asked what the Hell they were doing! They had cut all of his nails but one. But cut every quick!!! Not minorly. They were super short. Given that I normally did them all the time. Now I am having to try to calm him and retrain him. But, I will never let anyone else do them, Thanks for showing how they are supposed to be trimmed.
Barbara Vance oh no, that is terrible. I have had some very bad experiences with vets, especially when it comes to nails and ears. One traumatic event like that can lead to a lifetime of unwanted behavior. Unfortunately I have gone through the same thing and learned the hard way just like you. I am sorry to hear that. These days I cut nails and clean ears a few days before going in so that I can avoid their "assistance". Aura knows when she is done she will go for a nice walk so she "tolerates" it. Lol
Oh No! I'm sorry you went through that too! It really bugs me how some of them treat Our animals. They shouldn't be in the animal business if they don't care. It reminds me of the time I went into a vet's office for a job. I had to take a test and tell him about my experience with animals. So, I passed and was given the job. And I was so happy I could work with animals and make a difference. So, first day I went in he told me that all of my animals would be free except for paying their cost for meds. Which was great for me. And I was walked through what he expected. He said I'd be a great fit, yada yada yada. Great! Then he says to me, Just remember we are here for their money! We are not here to be their friends or to rescue them. It was a J.O.B.! The vet who was the person that was going to take care of my animals, didn't just dislike them but couldn't give a care less if they lived or died as long as he was paid. Anyway, now that I wrote a book. Sorry. That's a great idea. To take them for a walk first and wear them down. LOL! I will do that tomorrow. Have a Great night! i'm binging on your videos.
Omg thank you so much for this I have a girl German shepherd too she’s 6 months old and I just got done clipping her nails this was her first time getting them clipped because I was so afraid but she actually did really good especially when you said clip just above the quick that makes it so much easier for me to know I’m not going too far and hurting her it was such a helpful tip to learn and I did it all by myself I’m proud of me lol I gave her a good big treat afterwards
My dog does that face when she begging for food I will her to leave she will walk away look back me with that face. Trying to guilt me into feeding my food.blame my cousin got feeding food at the table
I am still a bit nervous. My GS is going to not be as good as yours about it. Right now I’m just getting him used to his feet being touched so he won’t jerk back. Which at the moment we live out and he can naturally keep them filed down on the gravel. So it isn’t a big deal for now. But it is something I’m going to have to work with him on. And mine doesn’t bother the chickens either. He learned that lesson as a puppy with a very protective momma hen. lol. Any way thank you for the video. Since he has black nails I couldn’t see too good where the quick was. Video was very informative.
Thanks for the video. Ive been using the clippers the wrong way I suppose. I was using the clippers at a 90 degree to the nail versus vertically aligned. My GSD is 16 months old.
I never knew that looking under black nails can help with finding the quick. Ill have to try rhat out on my dogs! As careful as I am it's still stressful not knowing
I've tried using the clippers for my own GSD but the clippers just don't work, it doesn't help because they were not brain new (sharp) and it's like trying to cut a hard twig or branch. I recently got a dremel so hoping to use that soon on him. He's also had an accident and had to go to the vet because of his nails being so long.
My months old gsd tend to struggle whenever I try to trim her nails. Because I'm worry myself to cut her nails too short. So it's a 2 man job for us to do, husband trim the nails while I calm her down...
Yeah I have seen that. Once they're scared once it tends to stick with them. I would personally just play with their paws and toes every chance you get while petting them. If you can give a little toe massage every day maybe it will calm her down a bit..
That's a tricky one.... "It depends".... Aura always wanted to kill cats. She would see one and start shivering and drooling. Then one day we obtained a cat - we were just going to nurse it back to health. The cat was very young. When the cat saw Aura he was delighted to meet her and started chasing her around and beating her up. She had no time to react or think about eating the cat - the cat just wanted to smack her around and play. They are best friends now.. Kind of a freak thing. Our last GSD got along with cats.. But we had 3 adult cats who were familiar w/ dogs when we got the dog as a puppy and they helped train her..
How often do their nails need to be clipped? I've done kitty claws before but will be getting a GSD in about a year. I've considered the dremel approach but the noise concerns me. This is great advice: handle puppy feet a lot.
@allaboutshepards how do i get the nail shorter without clipping the quick? My GSDs nail are long and click all over my hardwood. Not a big deal until you are trying to sleep haha.
Depends on the dog. Aura needed one every 36hrs minimum from when she was young for the first few years. If she didn't get that she would eat a couch. But we got the energy out and all was well. After age 5 she was very laid back.
Yes. Make sure it is a happy experience and don't reward the fear. If you have to just do 1 foot each day. You can also get puppy used to the clipper sounds and you playing with toes for a few days before you begin clippings. Nailing this now will mean easy clippings for years to come.
Sir I have jsd female 6 year old she have infection in the ear . I check many don't doctor they say to use the augmentin tablet bus this infection is not finished .kindly help me and tell me that treatment
I am not a vet, but I do know that augmentin is an antibiotic used to treat infections. Antibiotics are usually very cheap- if they want too much for it they can probably call it in to your local pharmacy. Be sure to get the ear treated properly as soon as possible.
You nee to put some antibiotic ear drop do the ear cleaning with salicylic i guess that worked for my GS male ... He too got some infection vet named it otitis i guess . But he's all well now...
I know its late but I also used to use guillotine clippers on my GSD and it was a horrible experience so I just switched to metal dog shears and they worked really well, they never chipped or broke and its easy to use
accustom the dog to a treat each time its feet are touched, touched with trimmers, and finally a single trim of just the end of 1 or 2 nails. STOP early. You have plenty of time. To a dog, it is just another handling exercise, so do not inject your emotion into it. If there is blood, you went too far needlessly. Use common sense and stop early.... the 'quick' recedes away from a trimmed nail, so stop early.
2:40 "Its not big of a deal"
The dog: "EXCUSE ME!!!"

She looks so relaxed and cuddly at the moment lol 🤗
Yes mam! How do you feel when you go out to get pedicure 🤔 😏

Awesome, thanks! I am going to revise this video soon and review some of the grinders out there, too. :)

Thank you for explaining it simply.I was freaking out for no reason. this should be easy now after watching your video.

Thanks for sharing man. Beautiful dog
Beautiful dog💕
Your dog is beautiful! Thank you for posting this video - I am going to cut my Shephard's nail shortly.
I am still a bit nervous. My GS is going to not be as good as yours about it. Right now I’m just getting him used to his feet being touched so he won’t jerk back. great tutorial!! you are a good owner!
my GSD was afraid of our chickens one peck to the face too many
Did you tranquilize this dog because my german shepard puppy acts like I am performing an exorcism on her if even look at the nail clippers so...
Same!
10yrs and my shepherd is still this way too😂
Thanks for the video. Ive been using the clippers the wrong way I suppose. I was using the clippers at a 90 degree to the nail versus vertically aligned. My GSD is 16 months old.
Definitely helpful. Thanx!
I never knew that looking under black nails can help with finding the quick. Ill have to try rhat out on my dogs! As careful as I am it's still stressful not knowing
Great idea, first time clipping our 3GSDs and im gonna take that advice, ill save a chicken treat for them.
Great video..this seem easier than I thought
This is helpful and inform. Thanks
Thank you so much! Ive been acted that I would trim them too short and hurt my boy. Thais makes me feel much better
Thanks the ending was cute
Thank you so much for this great video! So easy and helpful!
Look for the black dot in the center of the nail. That's the quick you don't want to cut.
She's a pretty girl.
Thank you very much for this video 🙏🐕
I wish my dog was that good
Thanks! Yeah, some dogs need a straight jacket for this kind of thing...
Good dog. Thanks for the video.
My German Shepard has that black thing on her paw. What do you think it is? Same as yours.
Thank you man!!!!
Good video mate just a qwick question do you have to do the g claws on them as well
Thank you,
I've tried using the clippers for my own GSD but the clippers just don't work, it doesn't help because they were not brain new (sharp) and it's like trying to cut a hard twig or branch. I recently got a dremel so hoping to use that soon on him. He's also had an accident and had to go to the vet because of his nails being so long.
Good dogs I love mine so much
How to find out quick in black nail. Every time i cut nail its bleeding. Pls suggest

What gadget do you use to cut doggos nails?
What if you let your dog's toenails get real long then what have no idea where the quick is
Thanks man made it clear and easy!,i wonder if you trained her not to mess with the chickens, could i train mine not to mess with cat?
That's a tricky one.... "It depends"....

Good on you mine is like fighting a bag of cats.......

At what month can you use that tool for your German Shepherd nails cause my is 4 months and her nails are big and when she jumps on you it stabs you
She's overdue! :)
Ok thx ❤️
Hi! How old is your sweetie? Thanks!
What month do you start trimming a German Shepard's nails?
How abt the dew claw nail cutting same way not too deep just like the other nails
I’m afraid. Is it bleeding
How often do their nails need to be clipped? I've done kitty claws before but will be getting a GSD in about a year. I've considered the dremel approach but the noise concerns me. This is great advice: handle puppy feet a lot.
🤘
this dog just finished 3 joints. Can we use a dog with typical crakk hedded behavior like mine? :D
Mine runs away and never comes back😂
@allaboutshepards how do i get the nail shorter without clipping the quick? My GSDs nail are long and click all over my hardwood. Not a big deal until you are trying to sleep haha.
Aura's got a bit out of control too. Clip to the quick, and repeat every week or two and they should recede...
I'm in grooming college and nail trimming scares me more than anything lol
Sir is taking your dog out for a walk daily important?
Depends on the dog. Aura needed one every 36hrs minimum from when she was young for the first few years. If she didn't get that she would eat a couch. But we got the energy out and all was well. After age 5 she was very laid back.
Are those blackheads on her elbows!? Anyway nice vid
Nope, just a normal callous
Mine just shows her teeths while i am doing her nails😂
Because she angry
My dog tries to bite me when I do this
This seems simple
🤙
I got a German Shepherd puppy do I have to clip his nails

Good vdo carry on
I got same looking GS and same type of chickens 😂
What about puppy
What clippers are those? I have been using a guillotine one and it broke because his nails we're too thick.
I know its late but I also used to use guillotine clippers on my GSD and it was a horrible experience so I just switched to metal dog shears and they worked really well, they never chipped or broke and its easy to use
Not mine, bfor a walk shez super hipper
