For the most part Michael was a victim of circumstances, that's what was so tragic about his story. Eventually he got fully immersed in the family business and he lost his soul. Sad stuff.

Yes, he is working in a pizzeria in Buffalo (New York City is probably too dangerous for him) when a young guy comes in, orders a slice of pizza and then asks to see his tattoo. No, that college boy died when he gunned down Solozzo and the police captain. That is when the mafioso Michael Corleone was born. That was his initiation to the criminal underworld with no exit door.
This is the moment when Michael totally let that hardness take over his heart. First, he finds out that his brother Sonny has been killed, then immediately after he witnesses his wife's murder. There was a coldness present in Michael after this that wasn't present before. As another commenter said, Michael was a tragic figure. A tragic figure in a heartbreaking tale.
+Tony Montana I agree that Fredo's betrayal drove Michael deeper into the darkness... just as the attempt on his life, which,-- in turn-- endangered his family, his wife's abortion, his wife leaving him and ultimately taking the kids, and so on did. But Michael was already 'gone' so to speak before those things occurred.
+Daniel Daniel I agree that Michael was definitely a changed man after the double murder, but something died inside him after his wife's and brother's murders. His eyes are pools of pain and anger. On a few occasions he'll smile and show love and affection, but those times are rare. He's figuratively dead inside.
@@shmosel_ in the first definition of it, yes you're right. The term overkill was not a thing back in the days. So Massacre was a substitute word for it, when somebody gets killed innocent and with needless brutality.
He was in big trouble with the Corleones after that, so he probably knew he was going to die. He was lucky he managed to get out of there, but he couldn’t fully outrun them since he died in a deleted scene the same way Apollonia did. Poetic justice.
In the book after the explosion that kills his wife he was unconscious for a week and when he woke up he said "tell my father to get me home, tell him I want to be his son" this is when Michael really became Michael
The darkest moment in Michael's life. Even darker than the end of Part II. Imagine he now knows that Sonny's dead. Not only a great personal loss but now he knows that he will be the don one day, a position he never truly wanted. And then the true love of his life Apollonia is killed. If you read the books you would understand that Michael was extremely in love with Apollonia. Her innocence was what he was drawn to. He could be pre-Sollozzo Michael with her. And then she was taken from him. This is when Michael became the cold-blooded man that we see once he gets back. Broken-hearted. Broken man. Breaks the viewers heart. When I watched the Godfather Epic which is the first two films put together in chronological order it was extremely powerful
By any chance, did You read the book of godfather? I am going to the bookstore i red there are more parts of the godfather series.. I have never watched the movie until now. It is the greatest film i haver even seen in my life.
+Sahil Khan I read the Mario Puzo original. I have not read any works by any other authors as I do not believe them to be canon. The book is very good and essential has the movie's plot in much more detail with much more added in. The book is a bit darker in tone. Very very good though and worth the read for any fan of the movie
+mannythegreek Appolinia had the purity...the innocence ...the freshness that draws men to pretty young women.Michael`s descent into evil and criminality was not the result of any one or two events. It came about step by step beginning with the attempted murder of Vito Corleone (Michael`s father). It was indeed a remarkable character development to see the idealistic young man just returned from WW2 grow into a ruthless revenge obsessed Mafia Don.
+mannythegreek I read the book also and it was so sad reading it when Appolonia dies but I disagree that when he gets back he goes straight to Kay and has the same relationship.
Man I can’t believe one of his guides after like months and months of protecting, carrying, and getting to know Michael would betray him like that. The man pays you, treats you like family, and even knowing his wife, you try to blow him up wtf
Yes, but to give the character some credit, he specifically asked if Michael was driving. He didn't want to kill his wife. Michael said yes, then she wanted to surprise him and ended up saving his life at the cost of hers.
Not really a world where anyone can be trusted. In the book Michael has started to become a little suspicious of Fabrizzio but more because he is showing signs of sexual interest in Apollonia than because he suspects actual betrayal. Calo, the other one, is considered dumber than Fabrizzio but more dependable.
Seriously. My heart broke in so many scenes in this film. This film crushes you. Breaks you. Blows you away. It will always be my favorite film ever made. So perfect.
No doubt.Barzini was a vicious adversary who would stop at nothingMurder was an everyday tool to people like Barzini, Santos Trafficante or Jack Ruby. When you appreciate this fact, and when you appreciate the intense war the Justice Department under Bobby Kennedy launched at the Mafia, it`s easy to see that the Mob killed JFK.
If you have read the book you would know that michael barely interacted with her. He was just attracted to her innocence and beauty. It was more like an arranged married thing. We dont even see their converastions as a married couple. So it is difficult for me understand how appolena was his true love when he was much more involved with kay. I felt it was mire of a lust than love
The sad thing here is that Michael was the intended target. The bomber even asked Michael if Apolonia was going to go, and Michael told him no. So he planted the bomb to kill Michael. But Apolonia wanted to surprise Michael by driving him, and before he had time to get in the car, she turned the ignition and that was it. Tragic.
@Ferruccio_Guicciardi NO one can get to me.All my loved ones are safely at Rest .Their ashes distributed by me,their last son,in chest deep waters of the ocean . I read the book, and there's one bit from the book that they left out that REALLY should have been in the movie. Michael wakes up in bed a week after the bombing and Don Tomassino is with him, and tells him what happened. Michael, at the very end of that chapter, while still in bed, says the following: "Tell my father to get me home. Tell my father I wish to be his son." That was probably the most powerful line in the book for me.
Yes, a true turning point. The scene that always got to me was when Vito (still weak from the gunshots) goes to the mortuary to see Sonny before the mortician had a chance to prepare him. He begins to cry and says: “ Look what they did to my boy.” Heartbreaking.
I feel so bad for micheal. he lost his first wife who was the love of his life and then he loses his second wife not to death but hatred and then his daughter is killed when he was supposed to be killed. He lost all three of the women he loved most.
Not just Appolonia died, but all kindness of Michael died too. Just about one moment, all grace from him falls and rises an cold and evil man. Like Joker said: “All it takes is one bad day to reduce the sanest man alive to lunacy”
That poor angel did not deserve that :( Hearing about his brother's death, and watching his wife die in front of his eyes in one minute is enough to harden anyone's heart
He loved Appolonia in a Earth-shattering and passionate way,in a way he never loved Kay.Appolonia awakened possessivenes, raw passion and longing inside of him.She made him alive,at Peace and happy. With her death he lost a part of his humanity...
Michael chased Kay for marriage. Everything was fine till she figured out he lied to her and even then she goes back to him. It's the assassination attempt that was the straw that broke the camel's back and even then that's because Michael kept chasing for more power and making enemies.
Apollonia was the love of his life; albeit she was very young and a bit of an airhead. Then again, she would have matched his lifestyle much better than Kay ever could. Just about everyone around Michael either got killed or destroyed in some way. But the assassinations of Apollonia, and later his daughter, were the biggest tragedies of his tortured existence.
Some guys point out that apollonia was "too femenine", that don't make any fucking sense to me. She is a female and it's in her nature to be feminine. I think it's beautiful for a woman to be feminine, warm, loving and caring, and that's exactly what he needed in that point. I don't know about you guys but i want to marry a woman, not a man.
No doubt in my mind Appolonia would’ve birthed the right children to continue the legacy. Instead, Michael was stuck with the (in my opinion) unworthy of the bloodline, irrelevant, annoying children with the embarrassment of the mother they had. Michael made the huge mistake of going back to her. What could have been, had App. lived....
Bigger blow was apollonia would have been a son breeding machine for Michael with no questions asked. He should have just grabbed another sicilian old school hottie to do just that. Kay screwed him up.
It's because Apollonia represented his innocents. In Sicily he didn't have to deal with his family or the Mafia. He was free and got to be fully open with Apollonia. When she died, it was the last straw, Michael was going to have his vendetta against his father's enemies.
the Mafia were not exactly the smartest cookie in the bin, eh...i mean of all the places Tom and Sonny could have sent Michael, they send him to Sicily, where the rival Mafioso families have extensive spies and contacts, and right in the arms of Don Tommasino. They could have sent Michael to Mexico or maybe Norway, but nope had to be Sicily. Yeah the Mafia would have a real tough time finding him in Sicily.
In Sicily, he was under the protection of Don Tommasino. He had all of Tommasino's men helping to look out for him. Tommasino was implied to be one of the more powerful bosses in Sicily and happened to be a longtime friend and business partner of Vito Corleone. Undoubtedly, Tommasino had leaks or men who were feeding rival families information about Michael's whereabouts. But bear in mind that Michael was wanted for murder. But Tommasino's influence was great enough that it kept Michael safe. If Michael had went to Mexico or Norway, he would've had no protection and could've easily been tracked down by United States authorities or he would've been killed by assassins who would've found Michael a much easier target.
***** We're not exactly known for our organized crime. Or any crime. And yeah, having a group of trusted friends and going to a mountain hotel without letting anyone know could have worked a helluva lot better. A country with few guns and fewer cops, as well as few foreigners. If a second group of male sicilian hardasses showed up at the same place you were, it would stand out :D Then again, the climate, food and italian-skills of Norway can't really compete with Sicily.
Ted Brasy Immigration isn't really much of an issue, but yeah it has caused a rise in crime. And we dont 'let in people without any check', you nitwit. Believe it or not, but living up to the moral responsibility of helping those less fortunate is not something I nor most others see as negative. Sometimes bad people slip through the gaps, and sometimes the trauma good people have lived through causes problems. That is not a good reason to just give them the boot as people like you keep advocating. Yeah, things like human rights, social responsibility and common decency isn't valued much in your decrepit society. It might harm profits and even out the distribution of wealth! Can't have that! Locking the doors to those in need out of fear from a tiny minority is the easy and cowardly way. We decided to do otherwise. And if you take a look at the statistics of Scandinavian countries VS. USA, you might notice that we're doing quite fine. *drops mic and leaves*
I remember seeing this for the first time and I’ll never forget the shock of it when I first saw the guy walking away. I was like 13 and it fully hit me what was gonna happen. Damn man. Such a tragic scene that gave birth to a tragic character, who set forth a tragic series of events.
I have always firmly believed that this was Michaels decent into pure darkness. Everything before was strictly business and out of love for his family. But this…this completely broke him and he was never the same.
@@slide5039 Super depressing. I don’t hate that movie but I don’t think it’s that good. I do like the last little parts of it though. It was a good tragic end for a character like michael
I believe it was Barzini who through some obscure connection (cannot remember) had Fabrizio paid off to rig the car, expecting Michael to be in it. Of course, it is Apollonia and it is the turning point of Michael's development. There is actually a deleted scene where Michael himself guns down Fabrizio in his New York apartment. The scene is literally deleted, and the only thing remaining is a picture of Al Pacino firing a double barrel.
The build-up to this is just so intoxicating and beautiful, it's all the more gut wrenching when it happens. This is tragedy right up there with the best in literature. Just brilliant.
I just noticed how Fabrizio asked Michael in the beginning if he was driving and if his wife was gonna be with him. He thought it was the perfect opportunity to take out Michael but he ended up taking out the wrong person
Ah the moment that destroyed any goodness in Michael..or what made him suppress it so. He trusted, and for those few months, felt like everything was right. The betrayal completely ripped Michael apart, not the attempt on his father, not Sonny's Death, but the assassination of his love. This is probably why he really never trusted anyone after, and killed all that felt like they would betray, including his brother. Such a sad and epic tale of a man's descent into loneliness.
If you really think about it, this scene is so slimy.. First, he finds out his own brother gets murdered over some BS(he definitely wasn’t expecting to hear that) and then secondly, his own trusted body guards end up betraying him by blowing up his wife to pieces.. That kinda had me thinking like, ok.. Maybe Barzini got in contact with Fabrizio somehow and had him betray Michael for a better life in America . Luckily, he didn’t get in the car with Apollonia. Dude knew something was up as soon as he saw Fabrizio slowly walking away.. like, if we can’t kill you, then the wife has to go.. heartbreaking man. You come to understand with Michael turned so cold blooded after all of this.. It’s almost like at this point, he really didn’t have a choice but to be ruthless..
This is the culmination of the transition of the Michael Corleone we know. Went from a humble war hero to ruthless mob boss. It's started when he was roughed up by the crooked cop when he try to protect his father from another hit, took him down the road of no return when he kill that cop and his father rival in retaliation. This was the breaking point when his wife was killed to get to him. You can say from either part of the incidents the good Michael died, but the quote stands true with any tragedy character in transition: you either die a hero, or lived long enough to become the villian. That what happened to him. In many eyes, he's a hero. Within himself, he became the villian.
With Apollonia at his side Michael could have achieved far greater things. Kay was a burden. Note how Vito had an Italian wife who did not question his affairs.
True! Also note: in the book, Vito’s wife was described as coming across as ‘disinterested’ and she explained it by saying: “I do not care about the pain of men because they do not care about the pain of women.” Sounds like a match made in heaven, huh?!
I'll never forget how shocked I was by Apollonia's death when I first watched this movie. The saddest thing about it was that she wasn't supposed to be the one to die in the car. The guy who planted the bomb was expecting Michael to be in the car and probably didn't know Apollonia decided at the last minute that she wanted to drive it. He could have tried to get her to her father's house like Michael suggested, but in the end I think all he cared about was to do his job and not get caught. I'm surprised Michael never sought his revenge against that guy like he did with the guys who attempted to kill his father and who murdered Sonny.
That bomb was meant to kill Michael and while it may seem like it failed to do so, I actually think it did. The Michael from before this tragedy is no more. It was at this point that his fate to become the godfather was sealed and he knew it.
Even though the bomb didn't get him, Michael truly died that day...

There was a coldness present in Michael after this that wasn't present before. As another commenter said, Michael was a tragic figure. A tragic figure in a heartbreaking tale.
Like.
I think this was a big step towarda that but the final nail in the coffin was Fredos betrayal.
+Felicia Moore Michael was gone after he committed double homicide at the restaurant.
+Daniel Daniel I agree that Michael was definitely a changed man after the double murder, but something died inside him after his wife's and brother's murders. His eyes are pools of pain and anger. On a few occasions he'll smile and show love and affection, but those times are rare. He's figuratively dead inside.
What turned Michael:
Killing sollozzo
Sunny getting massacred
Appolonia gets blown to hell
mrsanatra1 You can't massacre one person.
Yes you can, he was massacred, can't call his death (taking like 100 shots) otherwise.
Yeah but many bullets missed.
@@shmosel_ "look how they massacred my boy"
@@shmosel_ in the first definition of it, yes you're right. The term overkill was not a thing back in the days. So Massacre was a substitute word for it, when somebody gets killed innocent and with needless brutality.
Fabrizio's face at 1:59 is so ice cold. He was such a warm, funny character up until then, and in that one shot, it all vanished

He was in big trouble with the Corleones after that, so he probably knew he was going to die. He was lucky he managed to get out of there, but he couldn’t fully outrun them since he died in a deleted scene the same way Apollonia did. Poetic justice.
And THAT was the point. He got Mike to let his guard down

Every time I see this scene is as shocking as the first time; poor Apollonia, and poor 'college-boy face' Michael. They both died in that scene
I know, according to Godfather wiki, she was 17...or maybe 18.
+Skyler Powers She was 17
Lucrezia & Pierotto's Love Theme Exactly, so sad.
At least he got a piece before she was blown all to hell.
Why couldn’t it have been Kay
+mannythegreek Sure will do, thanksfor your reaction ;)
No amount of money would make me betray someone i have gotten to know personally and liked.
Yes, but to give the character some credit, he specifically asked if Michael was driving. He didn't want to kill his wife. Michael said yes, then she wanted to surprise him and ended up saving his life at the cost of hers.
Ahh the lone gunman theory....
I believe Don Tomalissimo played a role in this
Not really a world where anyone can be trusted. In the book Michael has started to become a little suspicious of Fabrizzio but more because he is showing signs of sexual interest in Apollonia than because he suspects actual betrayal. Calo, the other one, is considered dumber than Fabrizzio but more dependable.
@Kaniesha Benmaamar For money and he wanted to get to America, which the Five Families arranged for him.

Tough series of events for Michael. Hearing of Sonny's death and Appolonia getting blown to smithereens.

The last time we see Michael smile was when he was in Sicily. After that, he became so cold.
One of the saddest scenes ever... Apollonia was his soul mate.
This gets me everytime. He never loved any other woman more than her.
True
Only his daughter
Who knows how they might have gotten along a year or more later? Would she have been happy leaving Sicily?
You must not have read the book the movie was based on.
This scene was so mean, Apollonia was so innocent :(
Agreed but she was a casualty of war
"When they come... they come at what you love" - Michael Corleone, Godfather Part III
Tragic.

I read the book, and there's one bit from the book that they left out that REALLY should have been in the movie.
Michael wakes up in bed a week after the bombing and Don Tomassino is with him, and tells him what happened. Michael, at the very end of that chapter, while still in bed, says the following:
"Tell my father to get me home. Tell my father I wish to be his son."
That was probably the most powerful line in the book for me.
Hey, that scene EXISTS. It is in one of those mini series with Godfather deleted scenes. You can also find it on RUclips.
Its was cut, didn't know why
Yeah
Yes, a true turning point. The scene that always got to me was when Vito (still weak from the gunshots) goes to the mortuary to see Sonny before the mortician had a chance to prepare him. He begins to cry and says: “ Look what they did to my boy.” Heartbreaking.
The fact that they cut out this scene, is the reason I do not consider this movie perfect as most people do
I feel so bad for micheal. he lost his first wife who was the love of his life and then he loses his second wife not to death but hatred and then his daughter is killed when he was supposed to be killed. He lost all three of the women he loved most.

Very sad that beautiful Apollonia were taken from Michael in such a horrific manner. She would be the perfect wife to him, more so than Kay.
Michael chased Kay for marriage. Everything was fine till she figured out he lied to her and even then she goes back to him. It's the assassination attempt that was the straw that broke the camel's back and even then that's because Michael kept chasing for more power and making enemies.
it truly was heart melting. a beautiful innocent and ordinary girl died just like that
Apollonia was the love of his life; albeit she was very young and a bit of an airhead. Then again, she would have matched his lifestyle much better than Kay ever could. Just about everyone around Michael either got killed or destroyed in some way. But the assassinations of Apollonia, and later his daughter, were the biggest tragedies of his tortured existence.

No doubt in my mind Appolonia would’ve birthed the right children to continue the legacy. Instead, Michael was stuck with the (in my opinion) unworthy of the bloodline, irrelevant, annoying children with the embarrassment of the mother they had. Bigger blow was apollonia would have been a son breeding machine for Michael with no questions asked. He should have just grabbed another sicilian old school hottie to do just that. Kay screwed him up.
I feel He loved Apollonia more than Kay.
Even when he was old he remember her.
If a second group of male sicilian hardasses showed up at the same place you were, it would stand out :D
Then again, the climate, food and italian-skills of Norway can't really compete with Sicily.

Until his kid also got shot in front of him 30 years later… Damn. Why the hell did they release the GF3 on Christmas anyway? That movie was depressing

She was such a cutie pie. Any man would have turned into the godfather version of Michael after losing a young beautiful bride like that.
No doubt!! The love they had is a rare thing--so pure and heartfelt--they were perfect for each other!!
This is why I have always maintained that Michael Corleone is not a villain or even an antihero. For me he's a classic tragic hero.
that was one cruel moment=((((
@2:11 omg you can see her leg sticking out of the car!!!

"She want's to learn how to drive. She will make a good American wife." was the hint here
Damn Michael went through absolute hell throughout the entire franchise
With Apollonia at his side Michael could have achieved far greater things.
Kay was a burden.
Note how Vito had an Italian wife who did not question his affairs.
True! Also note: in the book, Vito’s wife was described as coming across as ‘disinterested’ and she explained it by saying: “I do not care about the pain of men because they do not care about the pain of women.” Sounds like a match made in heaven, huh?!
“She was wonderful, beautiful. I loved her. And then she died.”
He does seek revenge. Its a deleted scene. In the book he gets his revengem
