I'm doing just the same on a X6 M50D right now, (only 100K km's, and already leaking coolant into the exhaust...) and this vid realy helped me to fix this as quick as possible! Keep up the good work!
Hi and thanks. I have currently taken the engine and gearbox out to replace broken timing chain guides and rebuild the timing system. I think you will enjoy the content that I will edit soon😉
This is a great video, whilst they can be a pain EGR's do more than just help meet emission standards, they lower the combustion chamber temperature and keep the car running as BMW designed. The bush for the EGR valve shaft usually wears first which causes the shaft to tilt in the bushing and get stuck or exhaust gasses blow push the gap and gunk up the mechanism eventually causing the same issue. The cheapest copies on ebay etc are poor quality, seen many fail after less than 18 months. The EGR cooler also incorporate a vacuum controlled valve, this can also get stuck particularly if the valve on the top of the EGR cooler with 2 vacuum pipes connected fails or the vacuum lines have chafed on the inlet manifold. You can easily check whether its physically stuck by pushing the control rod and check overall functionality of the EGR system in ISTA. ISTA will take over the running speed of your engine to simulate different driving conditions, whilst testing things like turbo actuator, EGR valve position, Air mass, Air Temp and it can work out in many cases where the problem lies for example if the temp difference across the cooler isn't correct, the EGR cooler itself could be blocked usually due to the vacuum valve being stuck open.
Thank you for your feedback and for the great and informative comment. I would love to have more viewers like yourself who contribute a lot to this community🤝
Sorry I can't recommend that. What I would recommend is to replace/repair the unit and keep your vehicle as standard as possible. People mess with these things and if not done right can cause a lot of money and headache. The EGR valve on this car had lasted 165k miles so I think it is fair to expect a replacement. Hope this helps🔧🔩🤝
The egr valve is like appendicitis to the engine. It is put for environmental reasons, but it clogs the engine with soot and raises fuel consumption. Without it, throttle response is better in low rpm, car is faster and fuel compsumtions is low. With good mapper no problem :)
Could someone please give my any ideas. My car was pulled by a BMW dealer cus they was going to do a ”exhaust gas recirulation cooler” recall. Everything was changed! Drove the car home (25) mins and it warned me for low oil, pulled the hood and its litterally spitting oil under, could they have forgotten anything to put back or what? BMW say they did nothing wrong.
That's horrible to hear. Take no nonsense from these guys and bring car back to them. I bet it was some unexperienced apprentice who made a mess of your car. Don't ask me how I personally know and why I started working on my own cars and later doing work for people who appreciate a honest and detail work.🤝🏻. Best of luck and hope you get it sorted
@@TheKeenMechanic Yeah a BMW dealer 🥲 It was litterally pissing oil! How is the EGR really placed on a 518 2014 N47D20 if u know? Do u have to remove oil canels? Im not sure but if im correct it does look like the oil return needs to be removed to replace the EGR system, whole system was replaced and reinforced. Yeah bro they really have destroyed a car ive had since new and done 200k km with zero problems, they were surprised how good the condition was and ive always been doing it all by myself. Thank you a lot for your replaying, im just loss for words over this.
@@dpayne8611 Not sure where you are but here in the UK they will be afraid to mess you about if you mention you will contact a solicitor/lawyer or the ombudsman. It is very unusual to have no issues and suddenly after their work your car end up in such a mess. On the N57 I did a lot of work there are no oil lines in the way of removing the cooler but having said that I always make sure I have plenty of space when working. Not sure if there are any changes on the later engines as yours is N47 2014. Just stand your ground and ask them to investigate and explain how it happened straight after their work. Don't be afraid to threaten them with court. They will have to fix it as they make billions every year and this will cost them literally nothing. Don't be afraid to also tell them you will expose this on social media. Best of luck bro
@@TheKeenMechanic I have one more question! Sometimes I drop a drop of oil from the rocker cover and it smells like burning! Do I have to change the entire cover or just the seal?
@@mariansgura5930 Try with the rocker cover gasket only. It should be ok. If not, then it may be warped and you may have to replace the rocker cover as well

Hi mate, this is a great channel. While some items are a bit different to my X5 N57 your videos have still been a great help.
Thank you

Super video,i have same problem, need to replace egr valve
Glad you like it. I have tried to pack as much info in it as possible. Thanks for your nice message
I have a recall on it and i was hoping that it s a visible part, so i can be sure that they replaced it
Thanks for the usefull video!.
You can see the egr valve from the top. Just keep an eye for leaks of coolant if they replace the cooler too

do you recommend closing the erg valve and normal software shutdown, so that you never have a problem with it again??
