Great rudder design. So many companies get caught up in flashy gimmicks to sell the kayaks. Sometimes you just need the basics to be dialed in and high quality. Always been a Hobie fan. Been incredibly impressed in the past 2yrs!
Installed and done. Anyone curious, I preordered from mariner sails on 2/11. Arrived at my door on 2/17. Took 2 minutes to install. The blade is about 1.5" longer with a slightly different profile. There is more surface area, but not a huge amount. The shape is slightly different Edited to add: It works well. I fished 3 days in the Galveston bay with the new rudder installed. It is a drastic increase in turning. Popping it up and down can be a pain if you have a crate or rods in the rod holders. The cable interferes with things in the rear storage deck.
How the seat is attached is another HUGE improvement! There are 2 more advanced attachments instead of the 1 little plastic attachment on the 2021. With the 2021, the seat easily detaches when you don’t want it to. I haven’t used my brand new 2021 for this reason. Hopefully the dealer will trade my unused 2021 for the 2022
Is there a way to upgrade the rudder on a 2000's Sport? Or even replacement parts? I just picked one up and the Metal "T" is bent (It facilitates the up/down as well as the steering L/R movement)
@Flex Wenger I can not say 100% since I do not have a PP, but I strongly believe it will. The footprint of the xl rudder on the starboard side is as small or maybe even smaller than the original. The XL flips straight up and down into the water, unlike the original, making it look like it would work better with the PP. Again, I dont have the PP but if it works with the original rudder, I can see no reason the XL wont. Im in the garage looking and comparing, any questions on measurements, just ask.

Love my 12.0 but if hobie wants to keep this a competitive kayak at the almost 1900 price they will have to include this rudder, map pockets, and a rectangular hatch from the factory.
Backordered from anywhere between 1 week and 5 centuries. Good luck waiting! I'm just going to roll my own large rudder. I hate to hack up a new boat but Hobie is too busy moving production to Mexico.
One more check in the "Pros" Colum on my way to a Passport 10.5. Still hoping and praying you all find a way to mount an H-Bar on the 10.5. Reasons: I only have 11.4 inches of storage space, so 12' is out. + at 73, with a not so great back, weight is also important. Yes I know the LYNX could be an option, but at twice the price, and with less stability, the Passport 10.5 is where I need to be. I need to be able to stand up easily, just for comfort, and also for fishing, and the H-Bar looks like just what the Orthopedic MD ordered. Please get to work on making this happen, otherwise, this "Mr fixit" is going to have to find a way to improvise.
It sucks to buy a $2000 kayak and still need to pay extra to upgrade. I recently bought a LYNX and have been an owner of old town. My old town never needs any upgrade. What you get is the final product.
I don't recommend this upgrade. The initial pull to deploy the rudder works fine. The pull to retract does not work, there is not enough rotation on the pivot point to easily retract the rudder. I call shenanigans.

Same general style of rudder that should have been put on the Compass. Sadly, I don't see a way to do a similar retrofit.

Yeah that plastic clip to hold the seat down is just plain ol’ lazy cheap. Gotta think of a modify to use to hold it down.
