When I was a kid in the 1950s, I watched this show, Victory At Sea, (about the Navy in general during the war), and The Big Picture, (about the Army). They taught me a lot about World War II in general, and about the different services and where they fought. I have since learned to look beyond the propaganda and to sift the truth out. Still a good show.
Not to mention the music. We had a German maid in the early 1950s, who lived at our home in the United States. I remember watching victory at Sea with her and feeling a little embarrassed.
They say the Germans are thrifty. This woman collected all of her change in a big bottle in the basement. When she left, she forgot the bottle. She later came back for it. It was a really big bottle.
My Uncle Fred was a submariner in the Pacific in WWII. Thank you Uncle Fred! He was in the Navy 30 years, he was also involved in Korea and Vietnam, retired in 1973.
School mate told me his brother is on board subs! I've dug out several house foundations to know about tight spaces, having to work you're body around obstacles, to complete tasks! I went into 2 caves an found myself stranded in each. So I know about being stranded in total blackness. I scuba dive so I know about depths, pressures cold, wet, hardships of the sea. I was scuba diving at North Hiro Straight, by the lighthouse, when submarine made the tradition down between Vancouver Island an San Juan Islands! Sub so close I could see plating. Now I know why orcas an others hate sub sonars! Sonar goes right through you're body with massive impact, all they're communication is lost!
The American captain: you know, if I were that Nazi skipper, I'd never touch Singapore, I'd figure they were expecting me there. No sir, I'd come around sumatra up through sunda straight and make my run there. The Nazi skipper: you know, if I were those Americans, I'd figure that we wouldn't touch Singapore, I'd figure we would be expecting them there. No sir, I'd figure we would come around sumatra up through sunda straight and make our run there. Thats what I'd figure if I was an American captain, so let's do the obvious and go straight to Singapore where they wouldn't expect us and wouldn't be there like we expected
Amazing how important and effective the submarine was during WW2, especially in the Pacific. You hear about the allies closing the air gap in the Atlantic with air cover. In the Pacific air patrols must have been a threat to the US and IJN along with Destroyers. I would think both sides lost submarines to air patrols. The chances of a sub chasing down another sub astronomical.
I love these old sub battle vignettes. I just wish the Penis Fluctus time mark could be way bigger! Don't you! I want it to block the whole f-in screen - not just 1/3rd!
I remember watching this program every week back in the day (I'm 72 YO). thanks for posting.
Me too. I’m 78.
WOW - this is the first time I've heard the sonar return sound. Great production this. God bless our brave submariners.
I watched these as a kid along with Victory At Sea.
I watched these when I was a kid!
Air Power too!
As a submariner, I approve of this film.
Thank you for your service!
Thanks

Ah, now I finally know why this channel is called PeriscopeFilm.

William Schallert was in evert tv series ever made.
Thank you. We sure did.
Now I know why that call it the silent service. After listening to ear shattering klaxons and diesel motors all day, everyone onboard is deaf!
Hilarious
What?
Bless our Vets 🇺🇸
Man, haven't seen this show since the sixties

Use to watch ch Combat with my Dad. Only time he talked about his military service. Wish we had watched this show together too.
Patty Duke's dad a hero in the Navy?
Is that who the Captain is? I thought that it might be the man in Mr. Ed.
That German U Boat has an ayooga alarm that speaks English, just like our subs.

I love how the Germans measure distances in yards.
Only sometimes... Near the end of the program they switched to using meters. I guess you could call that a continuity error...

Submarines have become THE capital ship of every navy... that has them.
A U-boat officer wouldn't quote range in 'yards'.
Only when he speaks English with his crew.
There were only four speaking parts in the whole production.
Doesn’t it beat the modern crap?!?!?
Good thing they weren't using Mark 14 torpedoes.
I love a German using "yards" had periscope never heard of metres?
Is that Sub captain the man on Mr. Ed, or the man in the genie show?
German skipper in the Enemy Below.
Sam is yummy!

Smoking on a German WW2 U-boat. Ridiculous 😅
Captain Kirk
