- Today we are pruning my two prized Fatsia Japonica shrubs and oh my goodness, was it such a good idea to get Richard involved?
To say he’s not the most gentlest of “pruners” is an understatement. But he did a good job. They’ll both be just fine so don’t be alarmed!

Richard is so funny, he couldn't look more unenthusiastic if he tried! 😂
Oh Nikki you are completely right there 😆😊😍
Wow Richard was really going for it there ! Haha that was both difficult to watch and hilarious all at the same time I was transfixed to be honest ! Erm... well done I think ?! LoL brilliant tactic Richard, that's the way to never get asked to help prune anything ever again too funny loved it x
🤣🤣 hi soulgirl and yes, that’s exactly how to never get asked again 🤣 glad to have made you smile and I’m sure the Fatsias will thrive 😊😍🌸💜
Well done Richard the angry gardener😠. Your garden looks beautiful Janette. 🌺🌹🌺
Hi Jane and thank you 😊 glad we made you smile today 😍
Richard, by far my favourite gardener🙌👍👍
Awwww that’s just very sweet 😍
That was hysterical! Love you both. 🤣🤣
Oh Quail Hollow 7, thank you, so glad we made you smile 😊😍
Omg Jeanette! I can't breathe! I'm laughing so hard. You stayed so calm whilst Richard was literally yanking the leaves off! 😂😂. I get so upset when the wind moves a plant. If my husband goes near one of them I scream! Very brave Jeanette. Well done Richard for joining in 😂😂
🤣🤣 Davena I’m glad I made you laugh. But do you know what, those Fatsias are just fine and dare I say it they are thriving. Seems they enjoy a bit of tough love 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener I finally planted my little one earlier this year it was doing great until todays gales. I need hubby to make a wind breaker as its at the side of the shed and it seems to be a wind trap. I love yours after pruning x
Oh I’m sorry you’re having bad winds. I think wind is hard for our plants. They’re tough plants though, so I think yours will be ok Davena 😍
'The new leaves are .... the new ones!' 🤣
😂😂😂
Oh my gosh everything looks so pretty after being trimmed thank you so much for sharing you do such a beautiful job in your garden always love watching what you have to share
Thank you so much for watching 😍
Richard, you just lost your job!! lol He is mad at someone!! lol At least he's not the Grumpy Gardner! He's smiling because its over!! So funny. Your garden is beautiful!
Hey Peggy, thank you, glad to make you smile. 🤣😍
Hi Janette! You are so calm, I couldn't help but smile every time you said "Be a little bit gentle Richard" haha 😀 I do love when Richard makes an appearance in your videos though! Hope you have a wonderful week! -Cara
Hey Cara thank you 😊 glad to make you smile 🤣😍
Just taken some Fatsia cuttings for the first time and it led me to this video, you two are hilarious 😂 ❤
Hello and 😊 thank you!! I must tell you that a couple of years on from this video and both my Fatsias are still thriving - they’re such tough plants, I love them 😊 and I now have a few Spiders Web Fatsias too which are very pretty. I have one cutting! Good luck with yours and thank you so much for joining us today ☀️😊💜
Hilarious! Venus and Mars! And the fatsias look great!
Haha yes, that is an apt description 👍 the Fatsias are still alive 🤣😍
😂😅 I do enjoyed watching the two of you get on! Well done!
Aww thank you so much Rowena and wishing you a very Merry Christmas 🎄🎄🎄
Love to see you guys in your lovely garden working together... beautiful
Hi Felecia, thank you! Although I thought he was going to be a kinder gardener. Made me laugh though 😊😍
"Peel Richard!!.... he looks like he's plucking a turkey 🤣🤣 bless you Janette your patience is inspiring 😊
🤣🤣 he didn’t peel though, he just yanked 🤣🤣 not asking him again that’s for sure 🤣🤣😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener I think that's the plan, as you suspected 😅👍
🤣🤣
Hilarious!!!! Made my day x Thankyou.
Aww thank you Indy, glad to make you smile 😊
Richard is plucking a chicken 🐓 I don’t know about pruning 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 excellent video Janette 💕
Hahaha yes! I wondered what it was it reminded me of 🤣😍
WELL Richard! What can I say? Jeanette they do look beautiful ❤️
Hi there Judy 😆 thank you xx I think they will be just fine. Better not let him do any deadheading 🤣😍
So funny! Richard I think it’s going to be fine!! ❤️
🤣🤣 hi Mooj, they’re still alive 👍🙏
Love seeing you and Richard together . I want that plant for my garden. Thanks for sharing
Oh Tru_Passion you have to get one, they’re the easiest things in my garden to look after I think 😊 thanks for watching 😍
Haha i love it, sorry couldnt stop laughing 🤣🤣🤣
Hey there Leisha, thank you and so happy to make you smile 😍
Thank you ..... You have put a smile on my face today and that is a good thing ..... you two are so much fun .... Hugs

Lol!! Too funny! Richard reminds me of my bf when i ask him to help me with something!😂😂😂 They do it cuz they love us and they just wanna hurry and get it done. Lol, i thought Richard was gonna rip that tree top off. 😂You need to do more videos together. Ty!!!
Hello Sunshine, yes! He definitely wanted to get it over and done with. He’s not doing any more pruning in the near future 🤣 thanks for watching 😍
Oh my gosh you’re a little treehouse is so cute and your butterflies are beautiful you have a whimsical place to go and sit in that beautiful yellow chair oh my my beautiful garden such a beautiful place to sit down and listen to the Birds singing and watching the butterflies flying around your garden thank you so much for a tidy beautiful garden to enjoy .Hugs and kisses from grandma Sandy and Debbie
Aw thank you Sandy and Debbie, I must say I do love my little treehouse. I think the euonymus may sprout some leaves again so we will see what happens 😍
So lucky to have such a loving husband that’s here working hand in hand with you keeping this beautiful garden looking beautiful thank you so much for sharing my dear friend
Sandy … another lovely comment, thank you. Yes, he really is the best and makes me smile 😊 bless you, have a great day 💜
Janette, you and Richard made my morning with this video! Richard developed his own snatch and grab technique to pruning the Fatsia . I really need to add one to my garden. Thanks for the fun video.
Oh NJ I’m so glad we made you smile today 😊 and yes, you must get a Fatsia, they are fabulous and so easy to look after, and very forgiving 😉😊
Snatch and grab 😂😂😂. Love it
What a good laugh!
Hey Gemma, thanks for watching and this was a very funny day 😂😊
🤣🤣🤣 You pair are so funny. Its a pleasure watching you. Poor Richard!! xx
Oh thank you Debbie 🤣😍
👏👏great job Richard. Janette omg I was laughing 😂 through most of this video. In the end though it came out great. I was wincing when Richard was snapping the stems off at first, “The Angry Gardener” love that🤩
Oh Elizabeth thank you. I was expecting some negative comments from this video I have to say, but I’m glad that so far it has just made everyone laugh 🤣 the Fatsias will be just fine but I’m not going to let him hold my secateurs 🤣😍
Lol, negative reaction? No way. You have to be one of the cutest couples in gardening 💚🤗
Oh bless you 💜

Hey there Grandma Sandy and Debbie, thank you so much, what a very lovely comment, so kind 💜
Oh wow your garden is BURSTING with JOY!!! I planted a Fatsia because I loved yours so much. They grow SO FAST!!! Another beautiful video my sweet friend. Hi Richard! (He's so funny) I think we are all coming to love him too. : )
Awww thank you so much. I watched you revamp your lovely seating area today, I couldn’t comment because I watched on my TV but it’s fabulous 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener So sweet of you. . . thank you my dear.
Looks beautiful Janette 😊. Love the butterflies x
Aww thank you Lou 😍
Nice. Richard and you have some diff techniques it seems. 😂
😂😂 yes Kord, and this was about 2 years ago I believe and I’ve never let him prune since 😂 mind you, the Fatsias are still absolutely fine 👍 hope you’re having a great weekend 💚
🤣🤣🤣 That was so funny, Richard should get the RHS award for garden merit for his unique pruning style 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣 thank you Stephen, he can win in the “must try harder” category 😊🤣😊
I giggled all through . Richard has a more aggressive approach to trimming 🥴🫣but wonderful viewing . Love the tree wish we could grow them in WV . Oh goodness Janette he is learning😏
🤣🤣 he’s not going near anything tender that’s for sure. They’re as tough as boots though so I know they’ll be just fine. As you said in your video Teresa, isn’t June wonderful!! 😊
He makes a quick job of it. Great job Richard!
Hey there John! Yes, no hanging about, just rip it all off 🤣 like a band aid so it hurts less 😆😍
Brilliant 😂👏👏👏
😂 Sara thank you and glad to make you smile today. This was perhaps 2 years ago and Rich has not pruned anything in my garden since 😂 however … I am pleased to report that both Fatsias are still alive and doing tremendously well despite their shock treatment 😂🌺💚
It’s the aggressive pruning for me 😊
😆😆 oh that was a funny day, and my Fatsias are still alive a year later 😆😆 hope you’ve had a good weekend ♥️
I kept yelling to Rich: STOP STOP you are going to break the top off.
Then: Janette, STOP him for the love of God STOP him!
The Angry Gardener - I concur!!
Yes, exactly Deborah. I didn’t mind that he was tanking the fronds off, but the way the tree was shaking was worrying. They’re so strong though Fatsias, they’ll be fine 😊 I won’t let him touch my roses though 🤣😍
That was a good job Richard, very fast, I would hire you as my gardener any time! Lol...nice afternoon you two.
Hello MJ, are you sure you want him touching your prized plants? 🤣 but I knew the Fatsias could take it … they’re still alive anyway 😊 happy days 💜
Thank you for showing this. I have a large fatsia in a pot. I’ve never thought of tree pruning it! I’m going to do it but promise I will be a bit gentler than Rich 😂
Oh Sue I’m so glad to have given you a great idea. I’ve just posted an update on how they look one week later on both my Facebook and/or Instagram pages if you want to have a look. But good luck, I love them in tree form 😍 I’d love to know how you get on.
Well done Rich you two are so funny
Hello Iris, glad to make you smile 😊 and my Fatsias are still alive 🤣😍
You two make a good team of enthusiastic gardeners!😂. Richard didn’t have to go to the gym to get a work out He might have been taking out his frustrations on the Japonica instead of enjoying more of his morning tea but you are making a gardener out of him! Your Japonica looks delightful. I enjoy the tropical look as well!😎💕🌴🌴
Oh hello Mary and thank you 🤣 I like the tropical look too 🌴 I won’t let him near anything else for a while though 🤣😍
That was soo funny, well done Richard 👏 ❤
Hey Helen, thank you for watching my apprentice in action. I think I’ll leave it a while before he can touch my secateurs 🤣😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Yeah I think so, 😂😂 enjoy the rest of your week 👍
Beautiful , beautiful garden MashAllah 😍 ❤
Richard's natural pruning is similar to mine. 😊
Oh thank you so much 😍
Richard didn't seem real excited 🤣
No Julie, he didn’t did he? 🤣
Ha ha ha ha 😂😂😂 love this!!! 😂 if u want something done in 10secs with no fuss, ask Richard!!! Loveee it!!! 😍😍😍😍
You’re so right there Jean 😊 does not possess much patience 🤣😍
As usual l was cracked up laughing. Richard alone could be responsible for deforestation in England. Cut my leaves off with snips as they are quite tough. I have been tree forming my Fatsia which is in a pot on the Patio. Love your butterfly and bug corner, l'm being cheeky but what is the significance of the long pole and life ring in that area?
Hi Penny! Thank you for sending me pictures of your beautiful Fatsia. The long pole 😆 well, that is to prop up the middle of my washing line 😊 and the lifebuoy, well that was just from a shop in Leigh on Sea by the coast and has absolutely so significance whatsoever, I forget it’s there 🤣😍
The fatsia's look great. You are brave Janette, Richard was so rough.😂
Oh Adra yes he was brutal. What was I thinking? They’ll survive though … but he might not 🤣😊
This is hilarious-the angry gardner
🤣🤣 but Debby, a week later and they are looking fabulous!! I put an update on Facebook & Instagram today … they’re alive 🤣🤣
Oh Bless you Jeanette but you have your hands full with Richard. Please, please don't leave Richard alone with that other japonica, he doesn't have your lovely calm and sweet nature X 😀
🤣🤣 oh too late Julie 🤣 but I promise he’s not allowed to go near my roses 🌹😍
Richard has done some really lovely things, your little birdhouse, ladybirds and butterflies. I love watching your videos and this one in particular was just so funny 🤣🤣 Looking forward to your next one Jeanette X X 😀
Aww yes he has xx thank you Julie 😍
Lovely butterflies 🦋 😂😂

🤣🤣 oh Martha I’m so pleased we made you laugh 😊 I’m keeping the house 🤣😍
You are a brave woman, Janette! But, Richard did do a good job under your strict supervision.
🤣🤣 thanks TB. I won’t let him near my David Austin roses that’s for sure 😉🥰
Definitely a caution but loved it!
🤣🤣🤣
Oh my word, I think Richard hurts as much as the Fatsia after that first "prune". They look so nice, I like the tree form as well, just hope they aren't too stressed out after that ordeal 😊
Hello Wende!! I’m not sure Richard will have a 2nd pruning job to do that’s for sure 🤣 I know the Fatsias will be fine though 😍 hope you’re ok 👍😊

I'm good, hope you guys are well, and Richards knee is ok.
I’ve only just started watching (a few videos ago). You guys crack me up!!! 🤣🤣🤣 That was so funny! Loved it!!! Encore!!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Both entertaining whilst I learnt something new. I’m going to do that with mine once I’ve found the perfect spot for them (a year & some later still in there pots) 🙈😂
Have a great day. It’s going to be another scorcher ☀️🪴
Hello Dee and thank you so much for watching … it’s so nice to have a new gardening friend 🌸 and glad we made you smile 😊 Fatsias are brilliant plants aren’t they? Very forgiving, fortunately 😊
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener aww bless you. Thanks for taking time out to respond to my message. I absolutely love your garden. It’s beautiful. I did do some binge watching of your videos including you guys painting the fence lol!
I do love a fatsia. It’s a bit hot now to put it in the ground. I’ll wait until next week. I’ll be an avid watcher of your videos. Thanks again and enjoy the fab weather we’re having atm 😊☀️🪴
Oh that’s so nice of you. The fences need a touch up, I have the paint but it’s one of those laborious jobs that once you start you have to finish. So I am not looking forward to doing it all again 🤣 thanks for watching my videos 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener 😆 you’ll get to it at some point I’m sure. Mine need doing. New fences so….
Today would be perfect! But alas I have to go into work…
Have an amazing day and weekend ahead 🪴☀️🥵
Thank you Dee, you too 😊😍
It's all looking beautiful, Jeanette! You said angry gardener when I was thinking Aggressive Gardener. Anyhow, an interesting and entertaining video! Do you generally add a few annuals in summeras well? My perrenials seem to be later bloomers and I hate waiting too long for color.
Hi there Esther, thank you, yes Aggressive, that is very appropriate 😊 I do usually plant annuals too. The seeds I sowed in March were supposed to be my annual display, but the slugs ate all the seedlings I planted within days 😆 so annoying. I will go and buy some annuals now. 😍
🌿🌿🌿TEAM WORK‼️🌿🌿🌿
Hey Marlise, yes!!! I’m not going to give him any promotions though 🤣😍
Hi
Richard tackled that job like a man.Gardening aside. You know when you buy new clothes, socks etc? My husband insists on just ripping off those plastic bits attached to the labels. So rough. Consequently my things have holes in before i wear them😣I now have to grab them out of his hands and i use a scissors to cut them off. I do think it's a 'man thing' because my husband is the same...and a godsend on other things😍🌸💕
Oh yes!! Sharon, he does that too! Rips them off, how funny our men are 🤣😍
That’s tree reminds me a tree we had back home , but what we had there it was self cleaning, and as the leaf died the trunk was getting taller and taller , almost like a palm tree . By the way you guys are a good couple. 😊
I just looked it up what im talking about is called , Cecropia obtusifolia , is what Google says 😊
Oh yes Max, I just googled and it does look very similar. Very beautiful, and self cleaning too?! Thank you for watching my friend 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener It does , just like palm trees do
Bye for now my sweet friends can’t wait to see your husband back in the garden again he’s sort of sounds like my husband leave the gardening to me
Haha I think that’s the best idea 🤣
My heart was in my mouth. I think we will leave Richard with the tree houses and benches in the future...pruning is definitely not quite his thing😅
Hello Una, I thought “what on earth is Una going to think? She will be totally horrified!” - we both send you our apologies 🤣🤣 PS Fatsias are fine, tough old boots, promise not to let him touch anything else 😊
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener Yes, thank goodness it was a Fatsia. If it had been anything more delicate I would have had a heart attack 🤣
I guess you don’t want us to write a ‘Forward’ for your upcoming Pruning Book? 🤣
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener 🤣🤣🤣
Doesn’t sound too Happy about pruning I was surprised I thought he would enjoy spending time with his beautiful wife. But a little Encouragement by you he did get in and help.

Heaven forbid!
Oh my, I think you may need to do this on your own! 😮😂

Yes! 🤣 don’t let him near anything tender 😆
Oh Richard is so funny. Kind of like my husband.
😊 so you have a funny husband too Nancy 😂 they make us smile don’t they? But brutal with the gardening though but the plants didn’t seem to mind one bit 😊 happy weekend to you 🥰
Yes, a lot of times I think why did I ask? I don’t think we have that Fatsia here in Canada. I’m a new gardener at the experimental stage. My husband is making me animals I stuff with moss and grow plants, it’s also topiary.
Oh you’re in Canada 🇨🇦 isn’t it amazing how we can all so easily connect around the world? Fabulous. Your topiary animals sound wonderful Nancy 😊🥰
I’m making standards from branches too, as well as plants to standards. RUclips is great to learn new things. I learned a lot on your channel, I love your garden. The thing I like most is you, taught me important lessons. 1. Let’s get on with it! 2. If it doesn’t make you happy get rid of it. That’s the hardest on but you are so right. Thank you.
Aww Nancy thank you. Such lovely comments, just go for it and if it doesn’t work out, at least we’ve learnt something else 🥰
Oh wow, I thought I might wet myself 🤣🤣🤣
🤣🤣 Lorraine, sorry about that!! 🤣🤣😍
How did you get the first one to have multisteams? Mine currently has only one stem so I'd like it to be bushier 😊
Hello there and thanks for watching. I can’t take any credit for the multistems on that Fatsia, to be honest I have had that plant maybe 10 years so I can’t remember if it started out like that, or grew into two at some point! So sorry I can’t help you with that!! Hope you’re having a great weekend though (pouring with rain here at the moment) ♥️
Loved it Janette! My Fatsias are not yet big enough but when they are, I will do that. Have you ever tried propagating the Fatsia? Wouldn’t it be great to make new plants out of the prunings?
Hello Pamela, no! I’ve never tried propagating them! I need to look that up, maybe next year, I wonder if it’s possible? I love mine in tree forms, glad you do too because not everyone does. Thanks for watching 😍
😂 Richard is a good sport! 😂. The fatsia’s look very nice. Could you leave the old leaves on them or do they eventually dry up and fall off?
Hi Lauren, yes he is fun 😊 you can leave all the leaves on, they don’t shrivel up or fall off, just stay there really. Hope you’re ok 😍
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener good to know. I do like what you have done with it. And thank you, I am doing well 😘🥰. Lots of fun activities at home and in the garden this summer 🥰
That sounds exciting Lauren 😘 have a very fun weekend 😉
I think Richard was timing himself to see how fast it can be done.
Haha yes Sharon, I don’t think he has the patience for gardening 🤣🤣😊😍
Janette, will the fatsia continue to grow just from the top, or will leaves still grow below the new growth (on the trunk)?
Hello!!! There might be an odd little bit of growth down the bottom of the stem but I can pull that off. Next Spring the new leaves will grow out the top, just like they did here, and I’ll pull this year’s off. It’s going to get taller and taller eventually but I like that look. So easy to look after 🥰
The money they save on pruning shears, allows them to buy more plants
Thanks for watching Jordan and I promise he doesn’t do and pruning any more!! 😊🩷💚
@@TheEnthusiasticGardener ok good. You need to keep him far far away from all your beautiful plants

Do fatsia regrow from roots? I've just dug one up but I couldn't get all the roots and I'm worried it'll just come back
Good morning! I don’t think you need to be worried because Fatsia roots aren’t invasive do it’s unlikely to be springing up again 😊 have a happy day 😊🧡

He should be using two hands when pruning… I’m worried he will break that thing in half. This is painful to watch. I’m at 4:24. I’ll keep watching. Pray for me 😅
Good morning to you Jordan! This was painful I do agree 😆 do you know though, 2 years on they are both thriving, although I prune them myself now 😊 wishing you a great day 🥰
