So happy you created this video! I've been doing this exercise for over a year now and it has improved my left hand independence. I've begun teaching it to my students and can now refer them to this wonderful teaching video. Thank you, Niki!!
Perfect exercise! Reminds me one of the exercises in Scott Tennant’s Pumping Nylon... Thank you very much for the crystal clear explanation and the worksheet...
I absolutely love this LH exercise ( and I am partially convinced that I'm masochistic, given that I enjoy suffering for guitar music ) Thanks for sharing!
I think a big question is this - what is the purpose of finger exercises like this - and all the others out there? will these really improve my playing? now, in the future, etc? will i see an improvement? thanks
Hi Michael and thank you for your comment! Yes, finger independence is crucial for left-hand dexterity, and if we are consistent at practicing it, we'll definitely improve our hand technique. You might notice that moving one finger triggers undesired movements in nearby fingers. These tiny, uncontrolled movements can cause inaccuracy, tension, and fatigue in our playing. That's why finger independence exercises are so effective: as our hand develops better control, our playing will become easier! It can take some time to see the first improvements but don't give up! Consistency and discipline are the path to success
hmm surprisingly difficult, I can keep the little finger just touching the string easily but my third finger really wants to press down on the string.. quite hard to get it to remain just resting on the string
Keeping those two fingers relaxed on the string not pressing not.... Very difficult, but it tickles My funny Bone somehow . LOL 😂 I practice those when I'm watching The Three stooges on MeTV
This exercise is crazy. Looks deceptively simple, but good god is it difficult. Adding this one to my daily(?) routine. Thanks for sharing Nikki!
I know, when I first started it it was one of the most challenging things I have ever done =) Let me know how it goes! Niki
I'm an Ukulele Corner member and I'm co-opting this! Thank you!
Well that’s a great idea! So glad you can translate it on the Ukulele too!
