Shojo series in general get butchered when adapted no matter which studio. I feel like Shonen get more care invested in it and bigger budget off jump. A++ for the ASIP reference.
Some studios have done it well, I enjoyed how Bones made Snow White with the Red Hair a lot, but yeah a lot of them get 0 budget and cut half the story out.
@@ColleensMangaRecs Snow White With The Red Hair is legitimately my favorite romance story EVER among what I have read/watched in my life. Considering that anime in Japan is so often intended to be one long commercial for the manga, it's kinda amazing the degree to which the 7 Seeds anime managed to do the exact opposite.
This is actually untrue and a total myth. Watch the Cannipa Effect video on it where he explains how anime most of the time is actually not even a commercial for the manga ok man.
"There's nothing more hated by the manga community than a bad anime adaptation." Me crying in Berserk: Edit after watching the video: Damn... They did y'all so, so dirty.
It’s sad that none of yumi tamuras work was adapted properly 😭 I didn’t mind the basara anime too much even tho it ended at 13 eps but the way they treated 7 seeds is way worse than that. It’s such a shame because it had so much potential ! I’m currently 50 chapters in and already love it
I haven't gotten around to watching the Basara anime yet (because also where can you even watch that) but it was made in the 90s so I don't expect too much anyway. At least in that one I recognize Tamura's artstyle lmao.
@@ColleensMangaRecs I don’t think it’s available anywhere legally unfortunately. I watched it more than 10 years ago on RUclips when that was still a thing 😂 I think the adaption was pretty ok and was a good gateway to the manga except the ending which was really rushed
i think the live adaptation of her newest work (mystery to iunakare) is pretty good based on the rating and reviews. at least we're relieved that tamura sensei finally has a successful adaptation :')
i don't understand why netflix doesn't stick to pumping out cheaper, less art / animation intensive comedy anime, like 4-panel adaptations or something. surely it would be so much more cost effective and appeal to short-attention span on-the-fence potential anime enjoyers
The combination probably of wanting to strike gold with an adaptation, while not wanting to give it a large budget in order to (in their minds) maximize their return. The problem is too tight of a budget, or being given to a studio on the cheap usually leads to a poor product. They fail to learn the lesson because the failure of the adaptation itself is then blamed on the source being adapted...rather than the fact they cheaped out on adapting it in the first place and didn't take sufficient or even respectful care when making it.
@@r2kmoon2 It kinda is, studios don't get to decide what to adapt . If Netflix is involved with finance not just on license for streaming then essentially they become part of the "Production committee" , . Generally studios are always been blamed despite that the real culprit is the funders, give them tight budget and schedule with few eps ofc it'll turn bad or just okay.
Nah, Netflix can lead to some great anime like Great Pretender, Supercrooks, Kotaro Lives Alone, or Aggretsuko, they just have a problem of twenty duds for every fantastic adaptation :(
Bad adaptations are awful. I remember reading my favorite webcomic and being excited that it was getting a Kdrama adaptation. Of course it was terrible. I felt betrayed, bitter, and angry. Bad adaptations of any media shouldn’t exist. Drives me CRAZY.
@@ColleensMangaRecs Sweet Home. The webcomic is amazing. The Kdrama made me annoyed and have a burning hatred for Imagine Dragons. Heck, it’s not even the first Webtoon to have a cruddy adaptation. True Beauty’s adaptation was butchered too.
@@LizzieShiro Cheese in the Trap was my first realization that kdrama adaptations are pretty bad often times too lol Haven't watched sweet home though! It's been a hot minute since I watched a new kdrama in general honestly
@@ColleensMangaRecs honestly agreed. I only loved sungkyung playing baek inha, that too because I love her and kinda biased towards her. The drama was boring as hell otherwise and took away the dark sides of Jung yoo and Hong seol
Fine, you convinced me. I'll read the manga. I was avoiding it like the plague because I thought it was as bad as the anime but now I'm interested. Love your videos. Thanks for talking about shojo stories, they don't get nearly enough attention.
@@meimeioma5477 Hi, I have started it and I'm enjoying it a lot. I'm on volume 12 if I remember correctly. The classic shoujo style feels nostalgic and comforting. I got attached to the characters and I'm not gonna lie, the angsty parts got to me in the best way. I cried because I cared, which is not something that happens with every story. The drama, the romance and the action are to my taste. Although you do need to forgive some things along the way because this is an old series, there was no deal breaker for me. I would say going back to it is worth it, even though we have many new shoujo manga now. I hope to read the rest of the volumes soon. These are my two cents :)
My all-time favorite manga and I was so excited to hear it was getting an anime. I was flabbergasted and horrified by the anime. Couldn't finish it either. I was hoping the anime would be a way to convince my friends to read the manga, but now I just pretend it doesn't exist smh
This happens to so many series even WEBTOON adaptations aren’t safe. My fave one “Sweet Home” was butchered by pretty boys trying to act seriously and doing it poorly and bad cgi. (There was a small bit of the cgi that looked amazing, but that only lasted one episode and the rest was down hill from there. It was like they threw all their budget on casts and one episode of good animation.)
I completely forgot that I watched this whole show in 2020. There was nothing else to do really at the time and apparently it left very little impact on me but you know what I think I’ll read the manga now.
I love the back and forth between the two Colleens, that was a fun gag! And you've definitely proved that we need 7 Seeds in English. It sounds like such an incredible sci-fi series, English speaking fans should be able to enjoy the story without only having the anime as an option.
I feel a lot of Openings spoil the series or season a lot, but it's usually vague enough that unless you are manga reader you don't notice the spoiler, for example the Tokyo Revengers and To Your Eternity openings
As someone who hasn't read or watched 7 Seeds, I hadn't even heard of it before your channel honestly (though you have persuaded me to check it out, even though it's not typically my genre), I could feel your pain. I've had a lot of adaptations of favorite series of mine be just absolutely awful, and made me question if the creators even read/watched past the synopsis. One of the first that comes to mind is the second Percy Jackson movie, the first was okay, and still enjoyable in it's own way, but Sea of Monsters was an abomination and completely ruined the important lore of the books, especially with that awful ending 😨
I remember watching the anime 2 or 3 years ago and I loved it and in the last half year I heard a lot of people say that the manga is A LOT better so I'm currently reading the manga and I adore it. It's such an amazing series. I'm at chapter 100 so I will watch the video after I finished the manga so I won't come across any spoilers.
7SEEDS is actually the anime that made me decide to read mangas before animes. Originally I'd watch the anime before decided whether I liked it or not. And then decided whether I cared to read the manga. 7Seeds was a series I decided I wouldn't read the manga, because while it was a neat story an I'd enjoyed it, I just never really got to the point of caring about it and it left me confused and not wanting anymore of it. Until I was immensely bored one day and read the manga online, I was immediately extremely engaged with the story and characters, and my heart was full of rage for what the anime did to this amazing story. It unfortunately made me be wary of anime adaptations and I even avoided watching animes altogether. I've gotten over it a bit, but it still pains me to think there were people who watched 7seeds and thought 'meh average story' and never thought of it again. I will never watch an anime before a manga if I can help it though 😌 but i will add; I don't like it when other manga fans diss anime just for being slightly different than the manga. Sometimes that sort of thing is necessary for it to run smoothly in a different format and audience. But I understand when they get upset when anime onlies aren't experiencing the full story; I understand it all too well. That was a ramble I'm sorry. What I was trying to say was: Thank you for talking about 7SEEDS it's an amazing manga I'm glad there are people who also really love it. And thanks for putting my grievances towards the anime into words.
as someone whos only seen the anime, this convinced me to read the manga. i never knew the anime was absolute ass, it seemed decent to me when i watched it with no prior knowledge 😭😭
7 Seeds is my #1 favorite manga, and just seeing what the anime looks like compared to the manga is painful, to say nothing of the way the pacing and storytelling have been butchered. By coincidence I came across an ANN article today about the anime from when the first season aired, and the way 7 Seeds's reputation has been dragged through the mud without the manga being legally available to defend itself is the worst thing about all this. 7 Seeds and Yumi Tamura deserve so much better. Thank you for raising awareness!
Oh hell nah, this anime is getting the Requiem of the Rose King treatment. Aka I'll have selective short term memory loss every time anyone mentions it.
@@ColleensMangaRecs On the bright side, there is this upcoming anime based on the manga Bibliophile Princess is coming out soon and the visual look really good.
Mary Sue comes from Star Trek fanfics in the 70s where female fanfic writers always self-inserted as an amazing officer, usually youngest in their class; talented and beautiful in every way. It's a recurring theme in fanfics and the term was coined by a woman. Fantastic video and they did you folks worse than Berserk.
This video convinced me to read 7Seeds and it permanently changed my brain chemistry, thank you so much. I am now the proud owner of the physical manga (I somehow found it selling inline for 80 bucks????), I could ramble for hours about the symbolism, I love this manga so much and to think, I found it because of a video about how badly the anime fucks it up. From the bottom of my heart, thank you
7 seeds is my favorite manga, Basara also being in my top 5. The best way I can describe that story is of a pure lick of dystopian genius. One of the most brilliant, dark, somber works of fiction I've ever read. The way Tamura was able to develop so many characters alone is astounding, as most authors struggle to balance even five. Yet here we see the perfect example of a modern anime adaption refusing to take seriously the work of an author who made something that was (quite literally) serious, and to be taken as such. I remember finding out it was getting an anime adaptation and knowing almost immediately it would be horrible. I gave it an honest, open-hearted chance, but alas, it was so darn awful that I felt compelled to leave my first ever anime comment section post, begging for people to ignore everything about the anime and read the manga instead.
oh my god THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR TALKING ABOUT THE ‘Mary Sue’ THING. I literally can’t stand it and it just feels odd as people have no issues with blatant male power-fantasy MC’s.
I dunno, personally I use the term "Mary Sue" primarily towards power fantasy protagonists. Kirito from Sword Art Online is my go-to example of a Mary Sue.
Mary Sue's (and Gary Stu's) are definitely a thing, but like a lot of critiques it is used a lot as a label for 'thing I dislike' rather than the proper trope in writing. For instance, while many Mary Sue's are OP, that is neither a requirement nor sufficient. OPness is an independent problem in writing that is actually a problem with the general writing in the story, not the character, as it is robbed the story of any real tension. But, because people see OP character they immediate jump on the Mary Sue label for the issue which doesn't really apply well. It should also be noted, like most any writing flaw, you can actually have a good enjoyable story despite the flaw, and in some cases because of the flaw. Many manga/anime isekai's and fantasy stories leverage this quite a bit by having a protag that is insanely OP, but there is a weird silly charm to it. The problem is generally when the flaw is recklessly used, where someone genuinely thinks they're writing something serious and thoughtful, when the flaw is robbing it of all that serious thoughtfulness. It is kinda like trying to write a mystery story where the mystery is plainly obvious from moment one. This could have been written as another type of story, like a crime investigation story and potentially worked, but as mystery it fails miserably.
So after watching the first few minutes of this video, I decided to go read the manga so I can enjoy this video to the fullest. Turned out to be one of the best decisions of my life because I loved reading it. Had me feeling every type of emotion and the at the edge of my seat. It pains me to see how the anime adaptation did, but the manga is phenomenal. Basara Is next on my list now too.
Before watching your video I had to go see for myself and... Natsu being unable to tell the others they found water in the first episode was my last straw 😭In the final chapter of the manga there was a very meaningful call back to chapter one where Natsu reflected on how she was able to call out to others a lot easier despite it still making her nervous!! The pacing for this adaptation is insidious, and I 100% agree with everything you said.
Thank you I've very vaguely knew of its existence but never really looked into it, you have convinced a middle aged Japanese man watching a westerner talk about manga to read the manga.
I'm amused that this seems surprising to anyone. In all of Hollywood's history, WHEN HAS A MOVIE OR TV SERIES EVER LIVED UP TO THE BOOK? NEVER, That's when. Same holds true for Manga/Anime. Taken stand-alone an anime adapted from a manga may be good, exceptional even, but viewed in tandem WITH the manga, the flaws will always show. That's just the way it is. The Mona Lisa is a beautiful painting, but when is an actress or model ever going to be able to replicate that beatific smile? The interpretation of another artist's vision WILL fall short, because it does not contain the same level of emotional understanding the original artist holds for the original creation. The connection is not there.
It seemed that shoujo manga with similar style (rather complicate characters and storyline) have always been hard to be adapted to anime. The best that I can remember was Please Save My Earth, but I wasn't that happy with some aspects of the anime either. Its OST really impressed me though.
As someone who didn’t read the manga, I liked the anime at first (cool concept/ cool theme song) but I gave up completely during the summer team A plot. I was just so confused why they were rushing the plot line when it seemed so important!!! You know the pacing is bad if someone unfamiliar with the material knows that something is off. Also, to find out that Hana is a bit of a narcissist makes so much more sense! The anime made it seem like she innately knew more, but now knowing she just thought she did gives the character so much more depth and makes me think about those scenes so differently! Netflix fumbled the bag on this one, which is a shame because it was such an amazing story (I’ve now read the manga and hold sh*t! )
7 Seeds is truly an anime of all time. The plot was there, the background story exists, and the entire concept is definitely animated in 2D. The characters are designed and they have their own stories as well. The voice actors did a job giving voice to these characters, the story writers did a job composing the stories. However, especially, the animated studio actually animated the story into an anime, and the coloring was done, too. And when I hear the main character said "it's seedin' time", it truly reminds me that I'm watching the anime of all time. And it's sad, because it should be so much more.
If someone is interested in reading the manga I would recommend the scans "Boku-Tachi" (chapter 1-26, vol 1-5), "Storm in Heaven" (chapter 27-70, vol 6-13) "Tsukihana" (chapter 70-125, vol 14-24) and "Yanbang/True Love Translations" (chapter 155-178, vol 31-35) for the series since there isn't a pro-translation of it anywhere!! They cover most of the manga and in my opinion are the better scans. *For the chapters between 126-154, vol 25-30 there really only is Rain over Paradise's scans but I'm not a fan of the translations (though I appreciate it being available in English ofc !! ) I would love an official omnibus release in English someday! I can only hope....I will make a deal with the devil.....plz......
I have never read the manga, nor have I started the series out of pure curiosity before this video. But, the moment you mentioned Gonzo handled the project, I just felt a chill down my spine.
I am a HUGE fan of 7 seeds manga so when the anime came out i at first was excited...then that excitement became dread and anger. Natsu is my favourite so watching what they did to her really pissed me off.
I'm definitely adding this to my reading list. Usually I'd start the manga where the anime left off, but it looks like I'd better just start at the beginning. I'm actually very annoyed that Summer Group A was in the first episode knowing now that they were supposed to be a big reveal
I haven't read 7 Seeds yet because I'm still currently reading Basara but this video really made me frustrated. They should've just added the scene after adapting the arc, idk what made them think this would make the watchers more curious than confused. Thanks for the warning😭😭
they even revisit the scene again in episode 10 so the only reason they did this is to add them in the story earlier without giving a backstory first 😭😭
I appreciate this video, because I didn't even know 7Seeds was a bestselling Shojo Manga or was that long (2001-17? Sheesh!) The set up was amazing though so I don't doubt it. With that being said I kind of understand why Netflix/Gonzo didn't follow this one panel by panel. Seems like alot of the build up and tension comes from simply not knowing things. Along with the fact that it's already an animation, most casual watchers lose interest in that stuff fast. If Netflix is paying to have it published they probably wanted to speed up to the exciting premises immediately to maximize the investment, Thus creating a massive shitshow. Very sad that money is usually the reason to butcher stories.
I remmber being furious while watching the anime, and then going back to the manga cuz I hadn’t read it in a while at the time. The way I describe it to people is like someone skimmed through and took random pages and made an anime from it, you get all the iconic moments with non of the contex or build up. Ugh
It's late but, I.. I love how you explained these, thank you so much 😭 I was very sad when I saw the anime and non-manga-reader audiences thought that '7 seeds' are boring and not good. No, it's not boring! It's the first manga (read them first in middle school) that made me emotionally invested in them. I cried, smiled, terrified, and feel happy for them, more than I expected. and when they finally finished, I had this empty feeling because I wouldn't going to have anymore story about them. Watching you speak loudly about these make me feels better and realize that even after 10 years, 7 seeds still have a high spot in my heart. Thank you again, Colleen ❤
I'm literally going to stop watching this so I don't get more spoilers, I'm just going to read this damn thing. I've never heard about it before and honestly this has been an amazing review for it, chaotic, but amazing.
Didn't even know the manga existed before watching the anime, I think the story is really well made in the anime but its all rushed and like you said "it takes away all the suspense" it just throws every character in front of you at the beginning and some scenes could be way more emotional, when the baseball player comes in the world and everyone is getting eaten by the tiger, there is no emotion whatsoever in the animation, it gives the same feeling as watching two peoples playing chess. An emotional story like that and a empty animation 😔
I was so excited for the anime and I watched all of season 1 in one sitting. It wasn't the best but the idea was great and I was so excited to see season 2 and so on... I am adding the manga to my list now! Haha
Imo both ways of referring to Summer B and Spring Teams have equivalent quality. In the Manga there is the suspense of not knowing at first that other teams other than Summer B exist, yes, but in the Anime you have the revelation from later that not all of the teams woke up at the same time which creates suspense.
6:20 I was already gonna subscribe but this clip just put the nail in the coffin. I love your personality and the analysis and comparison is so well put together. Definitely finna read.
I remember that I read the 7 Seeds manga but then stopped because it was too strong for me and some parts of it bothered me. Still, it was an amazing story! So when I saw the 7 Seeds anime on Netflix I decided to show it to my brother, since that's more his kind of story. I didn't remember the manga that much anymore, so I thought the things were in the same order as in the manga. I felt like the manga was way scarier and was surprised that it wasn't impacting me as much. There was also a part with Summer B team when I was surprised something was happening that I was sure should have happened after a different event, so I told my brother about that event that I was sure they had been cut from the anime... They did show the event in a later episode, so I spoilered my brother... But I was truly surprised it wasn't making much of an impression on me. I even got the idea that maybe the story wasn't as great as I remembered. I suppose this video explains why... They totally ruined the anime!
Thank you for this. I think the thing that really gets me with this adaptation is that almost no one I know actually even know the manga, which is one of my absolute favourites. So with an adaptation like this, very few people would even give the manga a second glance. I hope it gets a different anime adaptation in the future, the one it deserves... Because it could genuinely have been so good.
I've finally got to reading 7SEEDS at the end of 2023 and this is so disappointing. Most of my friends who knew of the series entered it through the anime and dropped halfway through, now I understand why.
Thank you for reviewing 7 Seeds! I was SO disappointed when they posted the trailer and character designs for the anime as there's no Tamura sensei's style left in them :( this could have been a great anime if they truly stick to the manga /sigh......
I didn't even realize Trinity Blood is considered a shoujo and it actually makes a lot of sense. Trinity Blood with its okay anime adaption definitely did it's job with advertising the manga which I enjoy. There are a lot of series that need a Fruits Basket or Fullmetal Alchemist reboot.
The passion in the production of this video was the exact right level for the importance of this topic. 7 Seeds is one of my favourite stories of all time and I was excited when I learned after finishing it there was an anime adaptation...thank you for sparing me the realtime heartache of watching it
I know I have to let go, but I'm still crying about it... It could be such a good anime series... but no... no... and now we won't even be given another chance (probably). and they didn't publish the manga in English too. honestly, this sucks. it's devastating.
@@ColleensMangaRecs fellow shoujo lover!!! Can you do a discussion on how kid characters are treated in shojo as opposed to how they are treated in other anime medium? Most kid characters specifically little girls in other anime medium are treated like creepy feitsh fuel instead of human beings who face hardships and have growing up to do.
Wow I did not even know 7 Seeds was a manga. The absolute awfulness of the anime made me think it must have been original, as I couldn't imagine anything either being that poorly adapted, or something that bad getting adapted in the first place. The concept was great though, so I will definitely be looking into the manga now.
I knew it.I always felt something off about this show despite not reading the manga I was always curious on how much of this potential was wasted and looking at this video really filled in the gaps. I honestly feel really bad for manga readers only seeing their fav show be ruined to no fixture
The crazy hair and eyes second character is a great addition to keep the suspense and a clear cut between the scenes, good work. I'd like to see more of this way of comparisons or just crazy stories
I didn't read the manga nor watched the show but seeing the art I will definitely do. in shojo is a slow burn and take its time with the characters and environment... and adapting alllll that into a short season is definitely not the best idea
I was so happy when I saw that 7 Seeds got an adaptation and its in my top manga. And the anime was horrible, I was so sad. Have not finished reading the manga because where I was reading from was blocked a few years ago and haven't gone looking for a new source yet.
DUDE YES!! I love this manga I started reading it over 10 years ago and it's so hauntingly beautiful. I cried every volume. This anime is a huge let down and I refuse to acknowledge its existence.
For some reason I never could get into this manga. Tried it 2 to 3 times and always dropped it really fast, but after your video I want to try it again. It always sounds interesting.
I remember finding 7 Seeds on Netflix and not being able to make it through the first episode, it was probably the first time I just straight up dropped an anime. I hadn't discovered piracy yet so I think I just ended up rewatching Fate/Zero again.
So I waited to finish the anime before I watched this video and as someone who never read the manga, I gotta say I really liked it. But the last three or so episodes were really hard to get through. I gotta read the manga now. The story was kinda hard to keep my mind on honestly as there were sooo many characters. At the end of the last episode I was like “wait who was that again?!” Also 1st opening is way better than second 🥵
Lmfao @ the change up in 2:36 . The fact that there are 40 characters somehow is the thing that makes me want to read it, that is genuinely amazing Oh, and I would also like to request the removal of those Ghost Hunt volumes from the background or I will unsubscribe for flexing. Thank you and regards
The anime was ok in my book, and it got me to read the manga which is astronomically better. So it did it’s job as a commercial. I just feel if you’re a manga reader and you’re anticipating an anime adaptation you’re setting yourself up for disappointment. Because it’s not the story by one author it’s an adaptation by a team of people and the author is rarely involved. They take creative liberties and while some are phenomenal and can elevate the manga to new heights like most Shounen anime when it comes to Shojo or Seinen it’s the opposite… most of the time. With animation action scenes can be godlike but when it’s a quiet series or a story heavy one animation doesn’t really do the trick. Cutting out key elements for runtime erases the story and since they’re unsure if they’re gonna be greenlit for another season they try to jam pack as much as they can in 12 episodes. Because that’s all they are promised. All in all I don’t blame the studio for a bad adaptation. They did what they could with the limited resources and time crunch they were given. The industry is setup for 15 flops and 1-2 Golden eggs a season.
I love 7 Seeds manga, I want the paperback so bad 😭 I fortunately discovered the anime, thought the premise was interesting and jumped straight into the manga, never looking back
It is kind of amazing how badly 7SEEDS was adapted. It's not like Netflix is known for featuring bad adaptations, but many of the adaptations Netflix picks that aren't guaranteed shōnen hits are generally very hit or miss. Some examples of bad adaptations/choices: Cagaster (of the Insect Cage), Levius, Last Hope (aka Unit Pandora), Japan Sinks, Ultramarine Magmell, The Way of the Househusband, Yakitori: Soldiers of Misfortune, etc. There are a decent number of good adaptations on Netflix, but their bad ones make you wonder who decided they should even be on Netflix.
THANKS FOR THIS! I was so excited when I first saw netflix had made an adaptation. I couldn't get past episode 1 lol I skimmed for the "good scenes" for like...3 episodes more? and now I pretend it doesn't exist
I’d never heard of this series till this video… but nothing pisses me off more than a bad adaptation! especially if the source material is good. i might check out the manga now
I liked the 7 seeds anime but I also never read the original series 😅 it did make me super interested in the manga though, there's something interesting to me about finding out an anime coming out in recent years is based on a manga series from 20+ years. I feel I should read it if I can find it
One of my favorite manga of all time. I was so frustrated when I watched the trailer for this anime, but I tried to give it a change. I couldn't even finish 2 episodes, it was just depressing how poorly this was handled. Netflix did my girl dirty.
I get it. One of my favorite anime was Trigun. And as much as I loved the anime I wish it was more like the manga. The manga had more details and the villains were a bit more sinister AND Wolfwood survived at the end. Was the TRIGUN anime good YES Would it have been better if was adapted to the Manga HELL YES
I tried to watch Seven Seeds and instantly noticed that the material was good. Good story, good plot, good characters, everything good was there but... -- for some strange reason which YOU helped me verbalise -- the anime never "clicked" with me. I kept thinking that the pace was bad, the animation was often annonying and that sometimes the story wandered on things that didn't need that much attention. That is a similar sensation I had with Cagaster of an Insect Cage (an insanely good story made into an anime almost unwatchable). Thank you for your comments, they helped me understand a lot that I didn't understand in the beginning.
Ohhh I watched just one episode, and thought it was bad. Forgot completely about it, even the title. Now you make me realize this serie is much more!! I'm gonna read the manga then. Thank you ☺️
Thanks for the video. Like you said, I haven’t read the manga and I liked the anime. Didn’t know the manga was that different, the manga story progression sounds so much better and interesting.
I’m not much of a manga reader (I sometimes read a manga series if the anime series I like has stopped being adapted), and I don’t have Netflix, so I have no investment in this series, but your analysis and explanations was well done and very interesting. For the adaption to be this bad, I wonder if American Netflix executives had some demands on the anime studio to dumb down the adaptation to reach a wider audience range…
As someone who liked the anime as it first started I did end up having to forcefully push myself through season 2. I’ll have to read it now that I know it’s better.
7:11 well every anime intro and outro show off all the charachter as well show what will happen so i just skip them all until the last episode. and i have seen this anime's 1st episode and got so confused that i didn't opened netflix till now

@@ahhhhyes The manga’s just mediocre.
Me being a huge fan of both berserk and 7seeds🤡
I watched it more than 10 years ago on RUclips when that was still a thing 😂
I think the adaption was pretty ok and was a good gateway to the manga except the ending which was really rushed
There was a basara anime???!?!?!?
Honestly I loved legends of Basara anime. The manga is obviously better but it was great!
i think the live adaptation of her newest work (mystery to iunakare) is pretty good based on the rating and reviews. at least we're relieved that tamura sensei finally has a successful adaptation :')
i don't understand why netflix doesn't stick to pumping out cheaper, less art / animation intensive comedy anime, like 4-panel adaptations or something. surely it would be so much more cost effective and appeal to short-attention span on-the-fence potential anime enjoyers
For real?! Like Way of the Househusband being low budget makes sense. It's a goofy comedy and not a post apocalyptic sci fi series.
@@SemekiIzuio yeah that’s my point, they should do more like that instead of butchering things that need more care & money put into them
The combination probably of wanting to strike gold with an adaptation, while not wanting to give it a large budget in order to (in their minds) maximize their return.
But it's not Netflix's decision. They're simply financing it.
When they announce an anime adaptation of a series you like: :D
Netflix is doing it: D:
I personally does provide some good anime( Aggressuko and Great Pretender come to mind), but this ain't one of them. 7 Seeds deserved better.
It has more to do with the studio than netflix imo
@@playdoh658 True.
Nah, Netflix can lead to some great anime like Great Pretender, Supercrooks, Kotaro Lives Alone, or Aggretsuko, they just have a problem of twenty duds for every fantastic adaptation :(
Not just Netflix; studio Gonzo and studio Kai are also responsible for this rather cruddy anime adaptation of a great manga.
Bad adaptations are awful. I remember reading my favorite webcomic and being excited that it was getting a Kdrama adaptation. Of course it was terrible. I felt betrayed, bitter, and angry.
Bad adaptations of any media shouldn’t exist. Drives me CRAZY.
I gotta know which kdrama it was 🤭
@@ColleensMangaRecs Sweet Home. The webcomic is amazing. The Kdrama made me annoyed and have a burning hatred for Imagine Dragons.
Heck, it’s not even the first Webtoon to have a cruddy adaptation. True Beauty’s adaptation was butchered too.
@@LizzieShiro Cheese in the Trap was my first realization that kdrama adaptations are pretty bad often times too lol
Haven't watched sweet home though!
@@LizzieShiro Tbf true beauty’s original comic is pretty garbage to begin with
Its so sad because 7 seeds has so much potential for being a multi season anime with so much intrigue! So much wasted potential :((
U can even made winter team story, the underground shelter arc, the summer battle royale arc as independent 2 hours movie. They are so good.
Fine, you convinced me. I'll read the manga. I was avoiding it like the plague because I thought it was as bad as the anime but now I'm interested.
Love your videos. Thanks for talking about shojo stories, they don't get nearly enough attention.
It is tied for my favorite series ever so I hope you end up liking the manga!
It’s been a year since your comment. What was your opinion of the manga? Did you get around to reading it?
I was hoping the anime would be a way to convince my friends to read the manga, but now I just pretend it doesn't exist smh
lmao same here, I'm like "7 Seeds has an anime? whooooa that's crazy"
Hope you like it!!!
Hopefully you've forgotten the majority of it so you will not be spoilered. You won't regret it.
You'll be good on spoilers if your past chapter 50!! I don't talk about anything that isn't past season 1 of the anime basically.
@@ColleensMangaRecs Ah, good. Thank you. ^^
I will never watch an anime before a manga if I can help it though 😌
but i will add; I don't like it when other manga fans diss anime just for being slightly different than the manga.
7 Seeds and RotRK animes don't exist in my brain
@@ColleensMangaRecs Wait, 7 Seeds and RotRK have anime? I didn't know :)
I've straight up refused to watch the requiem of the rose king anime. I'm reading the manga first. it's much more visually appealing.
Had to stop watching this halfway because I now really want to read the series... but damn this is so good! Love your channel and your videos
This is clearly going to need another re-adaptation like Fruits Basket and I genuinely hate that they didn’t do it just ice the first time 😤😤😤
As lackluster as the visual, that is something I can sort of forgive. The way the did the story on the other hand, oooooooooooooooh boy.😮💨
RIGHT?! Like they do shoujo animation so bad I'm just used to it but the story too?! I draw the line.
From the bottom of my heart, thank you
OF COURSE!!!!!
Another great video. It really does amaze me how people and studios can make adaptations like this and be like yep this is good
Sometimes it really just feels like they were held hostage by a corporation to make something in 1 month lol
Most of the time they aren't even mary sue's and it's just people getting mad that a woman is multi-talented and her backstory explains why 🙄
Ikr the double standards are so stupid
I dunno, personally I use the term "Mary Sue" primarily towards power fantasy protagonists. Kirito from Sword Art Online is my go-to example of a Mary Sue.
@@TekTheNinja I beleive that for male characters the term is Gary Stu.
Hell yeah!!! If anything this video was made in hopes to get people wanting the manga licensed in English by more people lol
Hearing the “Netflix opening sound “ it’s like hearing the chords of a horror movie soundtrack in an anime adaptation
Thank you I've very vaguely knew of its existence but never really looked into it, you have convinced a middle aged Japanese man watching a westerner talk about manga to read the manga.
Lmao I've been cosigned I guess
Ever since I watched Basara anime many years ago I kind of already given up the hope to see a good adaptation for Tamura's work 😅
It seemed that shoujo manga with similar style (rather complicate characters and storyline) have always been hard to be adapted to anime.
Netflix fumbled the bag on this one, which is a shame because it was such an amazing story (I’ve now read the manga and hold sh*t! )
Just finished Basara and it was SO GOOD I can’t get over it so I’m gonna start reading 7 Seeds 😭😭
Just stumbled upon this on my feed. I have never read 7 seeds, but will now. Thanks for the recommend
*For the chapters between 126-154, vol 25-30 there really only is Rain over Paradise's scans but I'm not a fan of the translations (though I appreciate it being available in English ofc !! )
I would love an official omnibus release in English someday!
Still waiting for the season 3, i really fallin love with this anime
I remmber being furious while watching the anime, and then going back to the manga cuz I hadn’t read it in a while at the time. The way I describe it to people is like someone skimmed through and took random pages and made an anime from it, you get all the iconic moments with non of the contex or build up. Ugh
It's late but, I.. I love how you explained these, thank you so much 😭
I was very sad when I saw the anime and non-manga-reader audiences thought that '7 seeds' are boring and not good.
I started glossing over the details cause it was getting hard to follow, and then you dropped *FIRST EPISODE*.
Jeeeeez
Didn't even know the manga existed before watching the anime, I think the story is really well made in the anime but its all rushed and like you said "it takes away all the suspense" it just throws every character in front of you at the beginning and some scenes could be way more emotional, when the baseball player comes in the world and everyone is getting eaten by the tiger, there is no emotion whatsoever in the animation, it gives the same feeling as watching two peoples playing chess.
An emotional story like that and a empty animation 😔
That's ashamed that they ruined it amazing video thanks so much for sharing. 🥺
never thought I would find a 7seeds review and its perfect
Berserk 2016: I'm the worst anime adaptation of a beloved manga ever!
7 Seeds: Allow me to introduce myself.
OOOUUUH I see Kodocha in your bookshelf!!! (I love that mom and the squirrel that lives in her hair)
One of my favorite series and also one of the best dubbed animes IMO
I’ve promised myself, if I ever become rich I’m going to have them redo 7 seeds into a PROPER anime.
The crazy hair and eyes second character is a great addition to keep the suspense and a clear cut between the scenes, good work. I'd like to see more of this way of comparisons or just crazy stories
You advertised this manga so well will b reading
If I become the one man marketing team for Yumi Tamura series I wouldn't mind lol
I didn't read the manga nor watched the show but seeing the art I will definitely do. in shojo is a slow burn and take its time with the characters and environment... and adapting alllll that into a short season is definitely not the best idea
I thank you for introducing this amazing manga to me! I stopped watching to read it and came back (crying) to this vid to continue

At the end of the last episode I was like “wait who was that again?!”
Also 1st opening is way better than second 🥵
The fact that netflix aint giving us a season3 makes me mad
Lmfao @ the change up in 2:36 . The fact that there are 40 characters somehow is the thing that makes me want to read it, that is genuinely amazing
Oh, and I would also like to request the removal of those Ghost Hunt volumes from the background or I will unsubscribe for flexing. Thank you and regards
I'll be sure to move them out of frame for you next time lmao
You perfectly summed up so many of the issues that made the series frustrating to watch for long time 7 Seeds fans!
Remember reading 7 Seeds many years back and then when I saw the anime I was horrified T^T Unfortunately I cannot unsee this anime!
I get it. One of my favorite anime was Trigun. And as much as I loved the anime I wish it was more like the manga.
The manga had more details and the villains were a bit more sinister AND Wolfwood survived at the end.
Was the TRIGUN anime good YES
Would it have been better if was adapted to the Manga HELL YES
My favorite Manga of all time, yes netflix deffs didnt do it justice, however, if it wasnt for the adaptation i never would have read the Manga.
7:11 well every anime intro and outro show off all the charachter as well show what will happen so i just skip them all until the last episode.
and i have seen this anime's 1st episode and got so confused that i didn't opened netflix till now
It is nightmare inducing to think that Netflix is thinking about making a live action Gundam movie and or series.😬
.... i'm going to have to get my hands on this manga. i know this video wasn't about convincing people to read it but i'm sold
It was *mildly* trying to get people to check out the manga too lol
Wow this video was so fun to watch!I also agree with you.I couldn't believe how badly they adapted this masterpiece 😥
