    Oh man, I wish I could find stuff like this. In my area all I've found are fossilized coral and shells. I used to wanna do this for a living as a kid! It's so satisfying to watch

      I'd watch all of them. Even with commentary saying what your about to do and with what bit and then music if you don't want to talk the whole time

    I've made elk shed horn belt buckles since 1971 and seeing all the grinding and knowledge of anatomy at work on that rock is most interesting to me in the Jurassic area I live in.

    This was a hypnotizing video for me to watch. Thank you. One day I would love to visit New Zealand. I would love to see the beauty there...and find a fossil crab or two. That is top of my bucket list now.

    great work! Very fascinating to watch the crab slowly emerge! I wish we could find those here but alas here you only find the odd bit of tooth or bone. Which is fun to do but finding a completely intact fossil encased in stone that you can then prepare yourself seems like a much more rewarding thing to do! Perhaps a fossil hunting holiday will have to be planned. ^^

    What a wonderfully compliant crab - wheres all the calcification???
    Love the timelapse, I learnt to keep the rubble pile a bit cleaner, makes it easier to find the bits that decide they want to take off in a random direction.

      My pleasure! I learnt by practising on broken bits of crab till I got a bit more confident. As long as you take it easy and slow, you won't damage anything too badly! Thefossilforum.com has some good threads and examples as well 😄

    How does that tool works? Is that a pneumatic vibrating chisel or something more like ultrasonic? I know nothing about this kind of gear.

      Hiya Ricardo, it's a pneumatic chisel. It does about 10 000 blows per minute.

    Just came across your video for the 50 lb crab find, wondered why you were looking at what seemed was common round rocks.
    this is so fascinating, what was the amount of tlme this actually took ?
    a lot more time consuming than cracking open shale fore trilobites.

      The area is known to have crabs in concretions which are those round rocks. This prep took about 12 hours if I remember correctly 😀

    wow just wow, it must have taken a good couple of hours to reveal the crab and it's amazing :0) defo ten out of ten Mamlambo as you have the patients of a saint, i'd be worried about hitting the crab :0) do you use different scribes for different bits of the concretion :0) thank you and for taking the time, hours , to show us how it's done :0)

      Hi Robert! It took about 8 hours to do. Once you find the crab, it's easy going but it's always a worry that you will damage it when you are going through the rock looking for the carapace. I only have the once scribe at the moment, I am saving up for a Microjack 5 or 6 to do the finer detail work 😁 PS Got the package today!!!

    What was that substrate that the crab was encased? It look like volcanic ash.

      It's a concretion formed from siltstone.

    Hi mate, me again question for you. What tool are u using for removing the rock is it a dremel?

      You can use the dremel but it has to be the engraver, not the one that rotates really fast. Mine is a Pneumatic air scribe and the model is a cp9361 from Chicago Pneumatic.

    Hello it's amazing the job u did with everything i also want to make a preparation of a crab but i don't know at which level of the Dremel engraver start or use for all the process i would like a video or tips about how to make this and preserve the fossil intact which level did u use on this crab or well i mean at which speed rpms?

      @@MamlamboFossils, I was just noticing how quickly you were wasting that matrix.
      I work with a type of claystone that shows up in nodular form in the glacial till up here in Holland, Michigan. Right now I'm simply slabbing the material on a 10" diamond saw, but I fancy carving it with rotary diamond tools, as well.
      Your tool impressed me, as I said, with the amount of material you could remove in a decent amount of time. Is that a siltstone matrix enclosing those crabs?

      Hiya Jim, it's a copy of the CP9361 air scribe. I'm unsure of the exact make-up of the concretions. I'll have to send a bit away to have it analysed soon.

    Hello, i am new to the channel. I think this would be neat to do. Do you sell rocks this size? I would like to buy one so my son and i thats 8 could try do what you did. Not sure if thay tool is expensive or not.

      I live in Arkansas. I went to South Dakota, just wondering around with professional as a kid i found a big petrified turtle and so poo with bones in it. I remember it like it was yesterday lol. So much fun well except for the rattle snakes that ws always around us.

      Hi Robin, it's based on the CP9361. It's made by a company called Suntech, they are out of stock on Amazon at the moment and I haven't been able to find another supplier. Google "Suntech air scribe" and it should appear. 😄

    Are you not tempted to go deeper in between the claws and carapace to see if you can reveal its face?

      I definitely am, just saving up for a Microjack so I can do it without the risk of damaging the crab 😃

    what glue are you using?

      I mainly use two different glues. CA (super) glue - a really thin one that gets in the small spots. That's for sticking things together. Then paraloid b72 for consolidating and coating the crab to stop it deteriorating.

      @@richconroy5559 I only coat fossils that are flaking off or degrading in some way. I think it's best to keep them as is if possible. But not if they lose bits when you handle them!

    Do you think these crabs were buried alive? Are they molts? I live near the Mazon Creek deposits . Our concretions were buried in mud deposits in a River estuary during storms. Pat

      Good question Pat, they are complete crabs. I think it must have been some natural even that buried them. Perhaps a landslide. It's all up for debate though 😁

      Mamlambo it sounds like your concretions are formed the same way ours are. I really enjoy your videos. I like the way you film, and your narrating. What an awesome place you live. My wife and I live in the states, were lucky enough to vacation in New Zealand , 2 weeks on the South Island. I did not know there were so many fossils there. We did see the Petrified Forest in the tide zone.

    Really enjoyed this vid! Could you give me an advise on what and where to buy an engraver like that? I am looking for something affordable but not wanna waste money on junk. I'd really appreciate your help ;)

      Mine is a copy of the Chicago Pneumatic CP9361 made by a company called Suntech. I got mine off eBay for about $120 and it works really well. Haven't seen them on there again though. The original CP9361 with a tungsten stylus is a good place to start.

    Is there a reason you only ever reveal the top part instead of going all the way around?

      Yeah, it takes ages to do the whole crab and it gets very fragile. I also like the look of the rock framing the crab

      It's called an "air scribe", mine is based on the CP9361. They don't rotate but rather move in and out 13000 per minute 😄

    Just fascinating to watch, it's difficult to imagine the eons that little guy has sat in his stony jacket, snug and not knowing the surf was waiting to throw him around, break his hidey-hole and destroy him. Then he is rescued by Mamlambo, and safely revealed to the world! LOL, sorry just had to wax loquacious! Seriously though, when you are finished, is there something you use to stabilize the entire display, or put some kind of finish on it? Beautiful little crab.
