The game has a decent overall story, not bad at all imo. The leveling system is where this game falls a bit flat though. But they did try something new with 2, which I can respect.
This game is amazing. Story, Characters, Battles, Gameplay, CHOCOBOS, Dragoons!!! Great Levelling System too, I just don't understand people. I just wish the encounter rate was a little bit lower, people in Bafsk and Salamand had their dialogue changed after certain story events like the other towns and not stuck in a time bubble, and most of all, for the game to have had its own version of the FINAL FANTASY Main Theme, which sadly it doesn't (every Main Instalment has it, except II, X, and XIII. The reason they are my bottom 3 Main Instalments. Bottom is XIII because it also lacks Victory Fanfare and Prelude).
People always told me how FF2 sucked cause of the levelling system and when I played it I realized the issue wasn’t the levelling it was the horrible time wasting dungeon designs and constant back tracking to the same towns over and over again. Still the music is great and there’s still fun to be had but I think the levelling system is the least annoying aspect at least in the PR version
The game itself is great once you understand how everything works. The grinding can be tedious but crafting each character to your liking is worth it. Ill say the soundtracks for the Pixel Remaster games are done beautifully
I’m not sure how the pixel remaster did in rebalancing it, but “great” is a huge exaggeration lmao. It’s a very interesting game, yes, and the basic idea of having a character repeatedly do something in order to become really good at that thing is intuitive and nice. But in practice, it’s a total clusterfuck. I’ve only played the Famicom version, so I’m sure later remakes did some work in ironing out the really egregious kinks (at least I hope so), but the reality is that its inherent design flaws prevent it from ever really being a solid, balanced game. It was the original prototype for the SaGa franchise though, and I’m a huge fan of those games, so I respect its place in gaming history and admire the experimental mentality that went into making it. But nothing saves this game from being a gigantic mess. 😐
@@Aether776 If things didn't take so long to level in the original I'm sure it would have been considered a masterpiece. The framework of the level system is great, as is the music.

@@MTGHedgefund i always had an idea for a remake of 2. It's kinda interesting how "remake" has changed over the years. In the literal sense of the word, this *is* a remake of FF2. Also there should be an option for Dawn of Souls.
@@Geraki0nI'd love to see a modernized remaining of ff2, expand on the characters a lot, use the progression system in a different style of gameplay that compliments it(think elder scrolls)
I don't know about "easily"... 12 had the worst story for me, 13 was a big miss, and 14 vanilla version had to be rebooted and even then it sucked. Not to mention that the very first game barely had any story, being mixed with random stuff with almost no connection. So yes, 2 has it's problems, but I think these games need to be looked at chronologically, and for a game that came after the 1st one I think they did quite alright. Of course the later games got better, as it should be. But to call 2 easily the worst one is I think not fair.
FF2 was way ahead of its time. I think it was too ambitious. New level system, multiple character deaths, over the top final boss. Also broken af if you know what you are doing.
@@douglaswilson2375 Every second iteration of a series back in the NES Era was ahead of its time. But hey we got the SaGa series thanks to it and Unarmed ftw
It's not the worst because FF15 exists. FF2 may be heavily flawed, but I'll take that over a half-complete game created by a mercurial deadhead and directed by a misogynist.
