The cage is not symetrical. The tapered edge of the cage goes toward the axle (away from the trans.). You will see one side of the cage is flat, and the other side has tapered countersink edge.
Awesome man! Thanks. Have just swapped one for the first time using your video. Went great. Found a way to get the boot on to the axle really easy. Cut a ca: 3" sheet of thin plastic and made it into a funnel and stuck it in the boot. Then it slid on surprisingly easy.
Thank you so much for explaining ...re assembly of CV joint..it came apart as I removed the diff..spent the evening trying to figure what I had done wrong..easy fix in the morning..👍
@@andrewhkim one of the bolts was stuck and I had to do some hammering..the cover came off and some of the balls came out..I took the rest out, cleaned everything and put it back together with new grease..but i had the same problem as you encountered...i can fix it in the morning..thanks again..
Hey Andrew, How are your GKN CV boots holding up? I'm about to order some and wanted to get your input on that brand from England. Thanks in advance!!!
Couldn’t tell you haha. My car is an active barnfind. It’s been sitting since due to head gasket issue, and other family time takes priority. But I’d just roll with the GKNs.
Don’t think it’ll remove any play if it existed before. It’s just basically fixing the torn boot. If you need to replace the metal joint parts itself, then you can either buy a new axle or rebuild them. I’ve read that some Porsche axle/joint parts will work, but use the BMW boot

Interesting. Guess I didn’t look close enough. Wonder if it has any significant effects if it’s reversed.
@@andrewhkim from what I know it adds a few degrees of movemement..not very significant for vehicles with low angles of suspension movement.
Great job as usual, with attention to detail!

Great idea! Would have helped a lot! 😂
Life saver! Thank you for all of the links as well.

How did it come apart? The circlip should keep it together, no??

Best video by far and short too

This video helped me soooo much thank you man

What if my existing axles have some play in them? Will this rebuild get rid of that? Or are they long gone and new axles needed?
Really appreciate this video. Specifically the order of the ball bearings and the casing. Huge help! Thank you very much!

Does rebuild the boot and greasing remove any play in the joint? or the joint itself must be replaced?

nice video bro!

You didn’t rebuild the cv joint on the other side?
It wasn’t torn.
Wait you mean the right side? Or outer joint of the same left axle? I did inner boots on both axles. Just didn’t record the other one.
Will rebuilding it fix the clicking noise ??
That’s the route I’d go. There’s rebuild kits w new bearings and such. Take a look at the Porsche kit w/ BMW boots linked in the description.
