Great job David Sterns for waiting and holding to his price point. JD Martinez costs Cohen $19M NPV once you account for the deferrals and 110% luxury tax. That's way better than the 1yr 20M or 2yr 40M estimates which without deferrals would've cost Cohen $42M NPV. And now there is no commitment past this year to a 36-year old with zero defensive value. The pros outweigh the cons, but let's acknowledge that Vientos is likely getting short changed in development / playing time and that a full time DH means less ability to use the DH to give players a half day of rest from playing the field. The pros are the Mets have a very solid lineup: Absolute non-negotiable: 1-2-3-4 Nimmo-Lindor-Alonso-Martinez. You have to bat Alonso 3rd so he spends fewer at bats starting off the 2nd inning with nobody on base. JD is your traditional cleanup hitter here, lots of home runs, but lots of strikeouts. Either way, I suspect the bases will be empty very often after JD bats. Up in the Air: 5-6-7: Marte-McNeil-Alvarez. I expect JD Martinez to strike out a ton and Marte to be up with the bases empty, so he could serve as a 2nd leadoff man, steal some bases, and McNeil fouls enough pitches to let Marte steal, then drives Marte in with small ball. Alvarez feels to profile like JD Martinez as a 2nd cleanup bat, able to take big cuts. No idea: 8-9: Baty-Bader. Bader isn't great offensively, but he had 20 steals in 2023 and Nimmo takes enough pitches to let him run. I don't feel strong about Baty's identity in the lineup and expect him to move around a bit. Of course injuries will happen, especially with the health record of the outfield so we shall see how quickly this turns into Vientos-DJ Stewart-Zach Short at the bottom 3 spots. The focus is on getting men on base for our sluggers to drive in. Let's not fall into the unproven belief of lineup protection being based on who bats behind you. Intentional walks are no longer a strategy, and pitchers are more likely to hit Pete in the hand than try and pitch around him because they're scared of who's behind him. Marte can take more risks (bunt for hit, steal bases) when he's not batting 2nd.
The Mets gave Vientos up until the last week of spring trading to show them something, .. he didn’t they responded. Believe me if Vientos, Stewart, Choi or Voight would have shown just a little bit of something JD is not a Met.
Finally someone to protect The Polar Bear. JDM not only will help get Pete some better pitches to hit, he lengthens the lineup in a way we haven't seen in some time. Kudos to Cohen and Stearns for giving this year's team a legit middle of the order bat this late. They aren't punting this season, while not mortgaging the future payroll.
Great job as always guys, and Joe, you were fantastic on SNY during the spring breakout. My question: at this year‘s trade deadline, which outcome do you feel is most likely: Vientos is traded, Martinez is traded, or both are still on the team? Thanks!
That lineup is deep now all of a sudden. And the 3 x factors in this lineup are Marte, Baty and Bader. Bader is going to bat 9th but they need to put Marte and Baty in spots in the lineup where they will be well protected and you gotta push these 2 as well. They need to push Marte to bat in the top of the lineup and protecting him with Lindor in the 2 spot is the place he should be. If Marte is encouraged and can succeed batting number 2 that's a huge win for this lineup. That's 1 way to deepen this lineup for sure. Then Baty should bat 6th and be protected with Alvarez and you put the former batting champ behind Alvarez. That'll push Baty to succeed in that 6th spot where pitchers can't just pitch around him to pitch to Alvarez. This lineup can be the best and if it succeeds like I think it will, with this lineup, you have real speed from 1 to 3 and you get speedy again towards the bottom of the lineup when it gets to McNeil and Bader. Also, once the lineup gets to McNeil, it'll become speedy from McNeil all the way to Lindor, so it'll be 5 guys back to back with speed from McNeil to Lindor. You get it? This lineup makes the best sense and it has a great potential to be a dangerous one this year. I would love to show this to Carlos Mendoza because I really want this to be the lineup. More than me wanting it, I think it makes the best sense out of any way these players can be lined up. They need to put someone dangerous behind Marte at this point of his career and like I said, someone dangerous behind Baty, to force pitchers to pitch more to these 2 guys. It'll make the lineup alot more dangerous. Don't just put these 2 guys towards the bottom of the order somewhere. Put them where they have the chance to thrive, be dangerous, and just have them both well protected.
Hi from Sweden. Love the pod. Going over to see a game at city field in August. My favorite Mets pitcher of all time is R.A Dickey. Is their any chance we will see a knuckelballer in the Mets ever again? Is there a knuckleballer in the farm system? Is their any other team that has a knuckleballer in their system or was R.A the last one? Thanks for an amazing pod
Pete is playing every day dude. He's played in at least 150 games in every season besides 2020. Filling in for first base is going to be a pretty rare occurrence.
I was very against signing any DH because i want vientos to develop.... but at that price its really too hard to say no. Hoping Vientos can become the DH next year. if not hes trade bait for a RP or need at the deadline.
Even though STEARNS went against his MINI MARKET/ MONEY BALL PHILOSOPHY, he made the right move signing JD MARTINEZ to be their DH. He brings protection for PETE ALONSO. SO CHUCK IT UP TO MINI MARKET STEARNS!!!
@@FrankMajor-u4c Hey kid, it's called a projection for a reason. Ithink its a fair estimate based on the protection Pete will get. The Mets are now deep from 1-7 in the lineup.

I don't think that Stearns wanted this. He has said repeatedly that he wants the young players to play. This feels like Cohen or the veteran players asking for a more competitive roster.
I’m actually a little sad about this news. Similar to David Sterns I was all in on letting Vientos get a crack at a full season. Martinez is going to do fine in Queens but he doesn’t make the Mets a World Series team. I would have rather seen Vientos get a shot. Also assuming the Mets can get Soto and DH him in 2025 Vientos has no future with the Mets. Without proven big league playing time his trade value diminishes.
Mark Vientos this spring: 7-for-41 14 K's .171/.209/ .415 triple slash 3 HR 3 RBI HARD TO TAKE……..VIENTOS ALREADY HAD HIS OPPORTUNITY OBVIOUSLY. HE NEEDS TO FIXED THINGS UP IN AAA. THAT GOES FOR BATY AS WELL; IF YOU WANT TO MAKE AN MLB ROSTER YOU HAVE TO BE HUNGRY AND PERFORM LIKE YOU WANT IT. YOU HAVE TO PUT BETTER NUMBERS TO MAKE THE TEAM. THE METS HAVE GIVE PLENTY OF SHOTS TO VIENTOS & BATY
I still don't believe Stearns actually EXPECTS this to be a playoff team. Hes a GM of a team in the biggest market....he has to excite the fan base. Yes....he has hope.....but i don't buy into him legitimately EXPECTING a playoff team. Remember..... this wasn't a costly move and it adds hope to the fan base. Starting pitching will ultimately decide the fate of the 2024 Mets
Vientos is going to AAA, he has no value on the the team, Wendle is your back up infielder, vientos is not an outfielder, he can’t hit major league pitching and he is not playing over baty at 3rd
Can’t hit major league pitching? I respectfully disagree. He can hit major league pitching. He puts the ball in the seats a lot. I think Mets fans expect more from him. Also I don’t his glove in the field is that good.
Word up y’all, thankful for emergency podcast

Conor and Joe We’re going to be in the playoffs for 2024. The sky’s the limit. Keep up with your fine ideas on Mets news.
