  • "Into the Woods, A Fairytale Christmas" is this year's magical themed display at Castle Howard, North Yorkshire, England, one of the finest stately homes in the United Kingdom. It has been the private home of the Howard family for over 300 years and is spread over more than one thousand acres of land. It has been the setting for many films and TV shows, the most famous of which is Brideshead Revisited, and also, more recently, Bridgerton.
The breath-taking rooms with well-known furniture collections and artworks have been filled with a sparkling world of fantasy, inspired by Steven Sondheim's 1987 musical, bringing fairytales to life in a stunning show. See the full tour of the house and show, as well as the grounds and (of course ;-) the Gift shop.

I loved Brideshead Revisited and on a trip to the UK made a special trip to Castle Howard so see where it was filmed. I haven't seen Bridgerton. The Christmas display at the castle is just fabulous, I would love to be able to see it in real life!

I have seen clips of Brideshead revisited on RUclips and I'm planning on watching the series soon as it looks amazing! I haven't watched Bridgerton either. I went to Castle Howard for the Christmas Fairy Tale display :0) and the incredibly beauty of the building and grounds. Then as I prepared to go I discovered how famous it was for film settings, etc 😊😊 Hope you can see the Christmas display at the Castle one day soon. Thank you for your lovely comment. Xx

The castle and the grounds are beautiful. I didn’t like the life sized dolls in the rooms though. The furniture and regular furnishings were stunning.

I'm so glad you enjoyed the castle and the grounds as I tried to include the paintings, the beautiful ceilings, walls and general beauty of the place itself. Then the Fairy Tale was an extra treat on the day for me. I'm so glad you enjoyed most of it Cheryl. Thank you for your lovely comment. Xx

Whoa, the staircase alone followed by the Sleeping Beauty bedroom have left me gobsmacked and curious about the rest of the castle. Do they make a lot of money off of tourists or do they have money to burn, because these decorations do not come cheaply to buy, maintain, and store each year? Tell us about the history of the ropes that wall photos, paintings are hung from that appear to be attached to the ceilings, not the walls. I saw these in the WWII drama, "Bletchley Circle," about the women working as code breakers at Bletchley Park with mathematicians and Alan Turing on the Enigma codes during WWII. Their private homes had them hung in this manner. I was not familiar with it, thus wondered if it came from having perhaps cloth or costly wallpaper on the walls, but not on the ceilings, therefore it was wise, frugal, cost-effective to attach wall decorations to the ceiling? (Forgive me, I type stream-of-consciousness as you present things to us, so that you know you are reaching folks and not just filming for voyeurs who really aren't paying attention to your tour and information.) I so appreciate all you share. I especially found Hansel & Gretel's room appealing. This would be a great place to test the accuracy, subtleties of one's color discernment! I wonder how many people in the modern world do not realize that nutcrackers, in fact, crack nuts for eating? Yet another room with the family portraits hung from ropes, cords, chains from the ceiling, not the walls? So interesting how those from the past lived. That Crimson Dining Room looks more like an English Rose color to me and that would be good for the appetite, whereas actual crimson would give off way too much vibrating energy to make for good dining and digestion. I fear this would be overload and not remembered by wee ones, but would be great for children well into elementary school years. That trinket box in the olden days would have been called a casket for little treasures, because a casket is a box for treasured things, even if small, whereas a coffin is what is for corpses. I loved the rack of greeting cards you showed us. They were lovely designs and colors and appropriate subjects to be sent from there. Praise God, a lot is based on the ancient fairy tales and not on Disneyfied perversions of the original stories, that were once-upon-a-time written to helps kids deal with fears. It was a gorgeous day to view the gardens, lawns, statuary outside, fountain, and note how they might all look from horseback.

Thank you so much Philippa. Such an interesting points you make. I'm so glad you managed to enjoy the rooms of this magnificent place ( including the gift shop :o) Yes the original fairy tale stories are certainly full of strange things when you look at the history, etc. The fountain was glorious and I can't believe a rainbow appeared as we were by it. 🤗😘
