So many years ago, my bass player handed me a cassette tape of Live at Blues Alley. As a singer myself, I was always asked who my favorite singer was... and there is no real answer for that. But from that point on, Eva became the answer to many a question. She delivers pure raw perfect vocals no matter the song, no matter the genre; Blues, Jazz, rock, Gospel. Blue Note blew it big time when they wouldn't let her make the album she wanted to make. She refused to be put in a box. Emotions aren't wrapped in a box, they need to be expressed many ways. The best singers feel all emotions and can deliver them all. She expressed them all, in her delivery, her writings and her paintings.
The song has beaten most famous singers... ella, sarah, not that good, etta james and billy holiday awful, oddly marvin gaye and joni mitchel took very good shots at it.. but trying to do it with strings ruined every attempt to do that... joni would have done well, but for a horrid mixing.
Such precise intonation. But more remarkable still is her absolutely masterful control of dynamics. from full bore gospel scream to an intimate pillow talk jazz voice inside one bar! @3:30 Astonishing.
I play flute, and Eva is my number one teacher. The dynamics, when to use vibrato, etc. My whole musical goal in life is to be able to play any of her songs and come close to the dynamics. That's makes the whole thing. My biggest problem, besides that I'm not good, is that all her songs are in a key to low for the flute range, so I have to either play them in a higher octave, which misses the point and sounds terrible, or transpose the sheet music a bit higher so it still sounds like her song. BUT THEN, finding a good backing track in the new key in Eva's style is nearly impossible. But all in all, I love, love, love listening to her, and I content myself with that, and the hope that I can learn from her dynamics and how she handles each note so incredibly lovingly. Thank you flat5sharp11 - we are on the same page.
She's is very soulful! What I really love is that she kept it jazzy, adding a touch of blues towards the end and totally understated! appreciate that in a singer. She has major chops! She could have taken thevgospel and R&B routes because she has the range or chops to do that, but she didn't!. This song was written as a jazz standard and she kept it true to the way it was written, melody first! I digg her for that. I sing this song and it's pretty in and of itself, doesn't need a lot of rifts and runs! She's got a new fan!
It is so amazing how Eva can take a song we have heard a million times by a million other performers and just make it seem like we have never "really heard or understood". It like the first time we are hearing it. It always come across as though "this is how it was intended to be song".
She was a gifted arranger as well as a singer and guitarist. I think the best example is her "rediscovery" of Over the Rainbow. I was hypnotized the first time I heard it. This beloved song done by the best interpreter of songs of her time, Judy Garland, has somehow been retranslated by our beautiful songbird. I was listening to a familiar song , but at the same time a new song and a new way to listen to those same words. When a great Jazz artist comes on the music scene, you expect her or him to find new ways of "telling the same story" with their interpretation of songs. If the artist doesn't do that, well, they soon fade away. Eva's Jazz work might have made her a star in that genre. But to take on the most beloved song in the American Songbook made Eva Cassidy fearless. I think that may be why this fan loved her work.
You are so right, many sing this lovely song, including me, but absolutely NO one can do it like the late great Eva, we sure do miss her, what a talent.
I only discovered Eva Cassidy recently when she showed up as a recommendation in my feed. The song was Autumn Leaves and once I listened, I was hooked and changed forever. I then listened to her rendition of Over the Rainbow. My God...the angelic pureness of her voice, her ability to give each song new life and make them uniquely her own. She can touch my soul in a way no other singer can. What a shame that she was taken from us so young. I picture her in heaven with her guitar, sweetly singing, with the angels all sitting around her in pure rapture.
Oh my God! Are you kidding me? Eva is just beyond anything we as humble people deserve. I simply can’t get enough of her greatness. This is simply beyond human endeavor. God bless you Eva. Thank you so much!
I'm 75 years old and this brings back memories of all the fine jazz and big band singers we've had over the years but she surely must be near the very top.....she was just so good.
She is so gifted there is no messing , no drama. Just this beautiful crisp clear angelic voice she is the best vocalist to have ever have graced this earth !
She is one of the few singers I see using contrasts in her voice and performance. What makes her songs so powerful is that she's very moderate in what she does. She could've belted out all those notes but instead we hear these whisper-like notes, then she gradually switches to her powerful voice... :) Just a thing I noticed recently. I am so thankful to see these new videos (this and the Nightbird one). Thank you, millions of thanks, really. If it were my b-day, I would've considered this the most beautiful present possible -- this, or a guitar would probably be as valuable to me as well, to be honest. I am such a great fan, I know almost all of her songs (I daresay there are a few that went unnoticed) but I listened to her albums and I myself sing her songs. She's just my idol, as silly as that sounds. In a time when I didn't knew myself as a singer, Eva gave me a lot of inspiration that contributed to what I am today (musically speaking). We are blessed to have had the chance to listen to such a voice, and more and more lists should start including her in the top female voices, female guitarists etc. Unfortunately there are few people who appreciate her guitar playing, but what she does on guitar is just as beautiful. Also, the band members and those who came up with these arrangements should get some credit as well. The sound of the band overall is very good. It shows the compositions were well thought of.
That's what I thought when I first listened to her sing"People Get Ready". She takes out the big sound when she is ready, and then puts it back in her pocket,as if to say,"see that's what I can do..."
You are so correct in all you said, including the fact that she is so talented as well on the guitar. She has such control of her voice, it's remarkable!
Yes, amazing contrast and control both building up and coming down. First time I heard this song, about 3:30 the full out power back down to the soft tones just blew me away.
What an AMAZING nite that must have been a Blues Alley 1/3/96. Every song was perfection in choice, voice, and execution. I would have left there shattered and profoundly inspired in equal parts!
Thank God she was recorded and filmed. She sings a greater reality. Moving, subtle, powerful, pure. It transcends technique, so much so the voice seems to go directly to the heart.
By far- one of the most incredible voices that ever delivered a note. She sings like the sweetest of horn players and this here moves me to tears every damn time. RIP songbird- Eva- you left us far too soon.❤
Eva captures the spirit of this song like no one else has ever done. The pain, the sadness, the disappointment and also the anger and frustration at the realization that your lover has changed. Brilliant.
Amazing voice and talent Eva Cassidy. Thank you for posting this video, such a blessing to hear this lovely womans' beautiful voice. I know Eva is singing the high notes with the angels in heaven. Truly an wonderful singer.
Breathtaking live performance, not only by Eva but supported perfectly by the band. Her display of dynamic control and phrasing here shows exactly what she had. That combination of feeling, awareness and perfect pitch that most others will never attain. The fourth bar of the bridge the second time, was when my heart exploded!! Bless you !!
Billie wrote it and yes she does own it!!! However, she paved the way and left her footprints, and a canvas of this tune for all us singers to draw from! I am amazed at how much I am touched by Eva's voice no matter what genre she is in. Her beautiful sense of timing, pitch, dynamics, and great range inspire me as well as her story and determination to stick to her guns. Don't have no words to describe her singing 🥺
2:08. The way that she looks right into my eyes. I have listened to her rendition of this song for a long time, but never watched the live recording itself until today. Incredible. Today is my 21st birthday. I have definitely changed for the better since I first heard this song. Thank you, Eva, for getting me through so many long work nights.

I’m 69 and I’m so inLove with her voice it is so beautiful and can make your heart sing and tears roll down your eyes, May she be singing with the Angels
You've Changed
You've changed
That sparkle in your eyes is gone
Your smile is just a careless yawn
You're breaking my heart
You've changed
You've changed
Your kisses now are so blase
You're bored with me in every way
I can't understand
You've changed
You've forgotten the words, I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize you've ever cared
You've changed
You're not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me that we're through
It's all over now
You've changed
You've forgotten the words, I love you
Each memory that we've shared
You ignore every star above you
I can't realize you've ever cared
You've changed
You're not the angel I once knew
No need to tell me that we're through
It's all over now
You've changed
You've changed
perfection

Awesome!
Great voice !!! She is an inspiration ❤️ Best regards from Spain
Wow! And that says it all !
I love everything she does. This one is truly one of her greatest. A true treasure. I don’t mean to make light of this but it’s just Eva breathing. No tricks. No additional effort. Just Eva breathing. Wow! She is just the single greatest courier of song to ever deliver to us. Pure heaven. I wish I could’ve experienced her wonder in person but I didn’t get to. Thankfully we have the recordings. What a blessing. Thank you so much Eva! Thank you so much.
LOVE HER THE WORLD MISSES HER
