No it wouldn't explode like a nuclear bomb.what would have happened would have been a small explosion from the expansion of the water into steam and that steam fallen back to earth. We as a people owe a debt of gratitude to all the men who removed the rubble from the roof . who put the fires out and to these 3 brave men.
But I just get so mad when I see a nuclear bomb explosion when people speak of nuclear power. The material used in a nuclear reactor in no way can cause a nuclear explosion. Another very misleading statement is when a reporter states that this stuff has a half life of a billion years. Then you hear this has a half life of two years. . Well a long half life is good. That means this element will release its radation so very slow .I would be afraid of the short half life because that element is releasing its radiation real quick and very dangerous .I wish people were more educated about this subject.

Suggest you watch Titans of Nuclear on Spotify. There are three episodes covering the Chernobyl HBO series. You might change your mind! Perhaps you do know the Chernobyl plant continued producing electricity despite the disaster that had just occurred. Was the level of radiation from the disaster really a danger to anyone other than the firemen and helicopter occupants? Did the firemen and others really have to die? Could they have left the plant to burn itself out? What is the truth? Most people don’t care. Nuclear bad! Really?

Would have been a completely different story if the Government of USSR would have mandated that it be built properly rather than quickly.
Reactors would have been in proper containment vessels, those vessels would have been in structurally sound concrete structures. Like other powerstations outside of former USSR have been. Was they cheapest type of reactor type to build (no secondary cooling systems), and poorly trained staff, ie those that caused the start of the meltdown by fully removing control rods.
Therefore if anybody is to blame, it was the Russian government.
Inferior knowledge, inferior training, inferior action.
