I had the BLACK HOLE Sentry Robot figure, which was purchased from Circus World at the mall. I took it to school for show and tell and someone swiped it from my tote tray during lunch.

Merry Christmas everyone!!! Excellent episode!!! I'm really happy Raymond was able to get his Chewbacca back after getting such a raw deal. Similarly, for ages, I pined over the Kenner Stretch Monster. I had one when I was four, but after getting too curious about the goo inside him, I jabbed him with a Bic pen, and found out he had corn syrup in him. My Mom was coming up the stairs, so I threw him under the bed, and planned to fix him later with tape thinking no one would ever know. Unfortunately, I left him too long, and he bled out completely. My Mom found him two weeks later when she was cleaning. She told me she was disappointed in me, and that was no way to treat a friend. Also, she threw him out in the trash. I felt really guilty about it, and apparently became so morose that the following Christmas I got ''Krusher'' from Mattel as a replacement to cheer me up. I loved Krusher, but it just wasn't the same. Years later as an adult, I found a seller on eBay that was offering replicas made from the original Kenner molds. It was an expensive purchase, but worth it. So since 2012, I've been reunited with Stretch Monster and all is well, but for many years, I was haunted by his absence.

WOW ! … White Whales… what an interesting concept !
For me… I thought for a few minutes before I remembered one obsession like that where I remember going from bottom to top end to end of a mall and even to another store to try to find mine. Actually it was two figures from the same line.
I was a NUT for little robot action figures ! LOVED my C3PO and R2D2 Death Star Droid and even my Power Droid ! I got two Cylons and Muffet from Battlestar Galactica and I absolutely LOVED my Twiki from Buck Rogers ! (although I traded him for a… DRACONIAN GUARD for crying out loud ! A Draconian Guard ! The kid I did that trade with must’ve had some serious dirt blackmailing me !)
But the one, actually TWO figures I turned over like 5 stores trying to find were the companions for my Black Hole Vincent, Old Bob and a Humanoid… I could not find them anywhere…

Oh yeah… I watch 2 more minutes and Jason bring up this too ! LOL Well… I don’t wanna brag but I DID have the brown Sentry… I didn’t even know about S.T.A.R. until way later. But yeah the Sentry was cool. I wasn’t too interested in Maximilian… the red seemed cheery and even though his arms were vac legalized, there wasn’t any articulation to make him menacing so I gave a hard pass…

The missing link in my kid years as far as things I wanted was the entire line of aliens featured on the back of Matt Mason cards. The pictures were fantastic, and luckily the four horseman have done a reissue. But all that goodness is ruined after hearing that blue Chewbacca story from the nightmare in the basement. Seriously ruined my holiday season and going to therapy now.😂❤

I had a ROM as a kid, and my mom saved a lot of my toys to pass on to a grandchild, but she passed away before that could happen. When my brother and I were going through my parent’s house after they passed away we found a box of these old toys, and I found my ROM… who still worked! Now he sits on top of my bass amp when my band plays, with his little red LED eyes glowing

For me it would be Devastator. I remember looking through those little Tramsformers pamphlets and seeing all the bots that made him and wanting them SO badly. It was this sort of magical, totally unattainable thing. Never got them, though. We were poor and most years my gift came from Toys for Tots, so I was glad for whatever I got there.

When I was a kid the one figure I had a hard time finding was the original storm shadow. I looked around everywhere and even called stores asking if they had any but never had any luck. One day I was in a department store with my mom and decided to look if they had one. At this point I had pretty much given up hope on finding one but as I walked down the toy aisle a worker was restocking the shelves and had a new shipment of Joe’s in a box she had not opened yet. She opened the box for me and there was just one storm shadow figure in the entire box. I grabbed it as fast as I could.

This was great! For me the ones that got away were... Joe: Storm Shadow (just like Tony, I could never, ever find him). Transformers: Microcassettes - by the time I started collecting TF the OG ones (Soundwave and his tapes, Optimus, etc) were long gone, but I'd seen them at school years earlier and always wanted Soundy's tapes. Star Wars: I saw but never owned the Tusken Raider and Death Squad Commander, and I always wanted them, along with the die-cast Star Destroyer which a friend owned, and the 12 inch C3PO I saw at a market and never got. Tron: Kid bought a Lightcycle into school and I always wanted one. But my number 1 most desired toy as a kid, which I saw around but never got to own... was the Mego Hulk. I don't know if they count as 'White Whales' because I got to see them (excluding Storm Shadow), but they were deffo 'Holy Grails'. Though there is a completely different list of toys which came out that I didn't even know existed as a child which I would have dreamed of... (Flagg, Terrordrome, Predacons, Marvel Super Hero World, Palitoy Death Star.. on and on!)

I was pretty good about not having too many Grails I missed. The Mego Mission to Gamma IV was one, and I was completely mesmerized by the Mego Andorain and Romulan figures as a kid. Only saw them in a specialty toy/comic shop in my hometown (and even as a kid those prices were obviously marked up for first run). My best friend had the Romulan though, so I still got play time with him once in awhile.

As a kid in the 90s, I had become a big fan of MTV's the Maxx cartoon. Mcfarlane toys released a figure of Maxx in his Spawn line. Tried and tried to find him upon the initial release to no luck....it wasn't til years later that ebay became a thing that I FINALLY was able to add him to my collection.

3 3/4 inch Indiana Jones. I looked through those Raiders of the Lost Ark figures every time I went to a toy store.(I think I saw him in disguise as a German but never the proper Indy). I did get the 12 inch figure at least.

They should've waited a year to release them. There were too many competing lines that year that took precedence, and kids normally had a Christmas list budget for picking out things from the Wishbook catalogs.

  • @justinplayfair4638

Not a figure but a playset…the Mattel Switch ‘n’ Go Lost in Space set. It had a motorized chariot, figures of the Robinson, Dr. Smith and the Robot, and a styrofoam Jupiter 2 that the Chariot could sit in. I asked grandmother for one from the Sears Wishbook for Christmas, and she ordered. But, as fate would have it, the box arrived crushed from transit and she just threw it away. And that was that. Loved that my Grandmother gave kind consideration to my wish, but yeah, it haunted me, the big one that got away…

I don’t know if I saw the Mego Enterprise Bridge Playset when I was a kid in the stores or not, but I was absolutely nuts for the Trek figures, and I really drooled over the commercial for the playset.
I only got McCoy in the original Crew wave (or second wave, I have never checked his body type or his card art and don’t remember if the playset was on the card back or not), and I did get the Andorian from Aliens wave 2. Then I got a Kirk from the later Kirk overstocks (I’m pretty certain that card has a blank back), at a mall store called Chess King.
I never forgot about the playset, and by the time of the internet and eBay, I could at least look up Mego’s Star Trek offerings. Slowly I added some loose Crew wave figures from eBay or local collector sales.
When the Diamond re-Mego wave hit, I was ecstatic! I got a few of the figures from comic shops and the like, ordered a Khan from Canada for both me and my ex (a big Ricardo Montalban fan), and found an sf toy store parked in a far suburb (mostly Star Wars and the other properties but they did carry Mego and Diamond goodies). Sadly the economic crash of 2008 killed that store and a local used toy store, but not before I was able to buy a new copy of the Diamond version of the Mego Bridge Playset. (Only took some 30 years to fill a childhood dream!) 15 years later, my childhood dream is still unopened, despite getting more Trek figures in the nuMego line.
I think I need a second playset so I can customize it as the ISS Enterprise for my Mirror, Mirror figures…..

My white whale....well 2 of them.
First: Mego 12 inch "movie" Superman. I saw this thing at a store as a child and I had the 8 inch one, but that BOX!!!! THE ART! THE COLORS!!!! SUPERMAN LOOKED LIKE CHRISTOPHER REEVE (sort of). I wanted that thing for years.
Well, now I do, in the box with Fly Away Action, and I have Lex Luthor in the box. I'm happy!
Second: I saw a Mego Greatest American Hero once at K-Mart and never got one. Now it's impossible. I did make a custom 8 inch Ralph. That'll do.

Honestly i do not remember ever wanting any figure or toy that i did not see at the store, my problem was we were DIRT poor and i simply never got a ton of things that i wanted. I have often wondered if that was the reason i became a toy collector in the first place. i graduated high school in 1990 and became a collector the same year. which is sort of weird because i had a really good friend that was 6 years younger then me and i was still playing with my toys with my friend till about 88 when i started having friends with cars. yeah so i had a whole 2 years between playing with toys and collecting toys.

My whale gotta be the Jimmy Superfly Snuka LJN figure. The line was introduced with only 5 figures as the first wave in 1984 and Snuka was harder to find since he was getting phased out by the WWF due to his life outside the ring. Eventually did find him as a standalone figure on a peg at a Walgreens of all places in 1986

I totally identify with 'always on the back, never on the front' but my first thought was... Fran, the mum from Jim Henson's Dinosaurs. They had that little Hasbro line in the early 90s? I have no idea why that has become my mind's go-to for this concept but apparently it has. The mum from Dinosaurs. And d'you know what? I actually don't have one at the moment, I have a bootleg with a little tuft of Troll hair. I thought I should share this.

My childhood trauma toy was Manglor. The commercials, the box art… I wanted one so bad. I finally got him, opened him up, and like every other kid I immediately ripped off his arm and you all know how that turned out. We took him back to Woolworths and I exchanged him for a Zoid.
