- Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue at Live Talks Los Angeles discussing their book, "What Makes a Marriage Last: 40 Celebrated Couples Share with Us the Secrets to a Happy Life."
What makes a marriage last? Who doesn’t want to know the answer to that question? To unlock this mystery, iconic couple Marlo Thomas and Phil Donahue crisscrossed the country and conducted intimate conversations with forty celebrated couples whose long marriages they’ve admired-from award-winning actors, athletes, and newsmakers to writers, comedians, musicians, and a former U.S. president and First Lady. Through these conversations, Marlo and Phil also revealed the rich journey of their own marriage.
Wow, it's Phil Donahue! Good to see you're still going strong, Phil!
It's so lovely to see Marlo and Phil still together and in love.
I remember watching Marlo and Phil falling in love before our eyes right there on his show. They sat across from each other, gazing into each other's eyes and smiling broadly, as if no one else was in the studio. Instant chemistry! 💞
I watched that chemistry as well?
Yes I watched that show and you could feel their chemistry. It was great.
I'm a door slammer.
The older you get you pick your arguments. It's not worth the loss of energy.
My husband was so funny. Everybody said he should have been a comedian. It helped keep us together.
I remember that show where they met. Sparks were flying throughout the entire show. Anybody who was watching it saw it too! I am so happy for them both.
I saw the show were they met.
Hi! I found my son, whom I was forced to give up thanks to the Phil Donahue show!
❤😮😢😅❤️
✌️♥️🙏 🥰 So Happy for You!!!
THIS made my DAY!!! Congratulations!!! what a blessing!
Phil Donahue was, and is, the greatest Interviewer of all time. His sharp wit, candid questions, probing without pushing approach is unmatched. His cutting edge subject matter was riveting and fascinating. His compassion was palpable. He will always be the best ever.
Oprah who?
lol …so true!
That is so true what Marlo is saying that one should accommodate that person you care about. Unfortunately, not everyone feels that way and I found myself in a loveless marriage due to the lack of not having someone that loved me at all.
Marlo is always beautiful. I still have fan photos loved That Girl!
Still my favorite couple after all these years
I miss the Donahue Show. I liked the audience participation which gave you insight to what the rest of the country is thinking.
I grew up watching them both and LOVED both of their shows. I remember the Donahue show on the day that they met! Her comment "marriage is like putting your ear up to a vacuum and sucking out your brains," before she met him was classic. So glad they have lasted this long. At the same time, wish she would listen to him more, interrupt less...not being sexist I would dislike it even more if he did the same to her. But as she said, they are different. Beautiful after all these years.
I love Phil and owe him so much. He could never know. He opened so many minds to the endless variations in human sexuality. We are all variants. It is not a continuum. It is a night far from the city where the stars all shine a different light. Marlo will always be in my mind. I was 11 at the start of 1966. Marlo was held up but the teens and others as the ideal woman. They both are just people but what great people they are. Phil was a substitute father for me. I watched his show whenever possible and watch his timeless shows today. I learned more important things from him then my university.
People are people! Realize we All have faults, be their best friends. My husband said if I just went over and got a deck of cards and played solitarie which gave me time to clear my mind and not get really mad, and in my husband would go outside, then come back in and say ,,,are you not angry at me now. I just need to quiet time which we both finally say okay we are near to each other. We are best friends!.Laugher is so good for us all!. How do you raise kids without laughter? One time my son got up at night and told us to be quiet as he had school in the morning! We were laughing.but didn't realize we were loud. Compliments, even small ones
I loved the phil Donahue show. Saw him in person at a book signing. I loved the way he interviewed people.
So nice to see you both, sending you both many blessings! 🙏🏼❤️🥰⭐️
Marlo ,My husband,and I used to watched your show . ❤❤Beautiful lady!❤❤
I am very happy and appreciative that both of you wonderful people have opened up to us. So worth it.
Love Phil Donahue and Marlo Thomas .Much respect for the
both of them individually and
together .Danny Thomas was
a saint and thank you Marlo
for keeping St.Jude helping
the beautiful little ones and there families. ❤🙏
What a great show. Every young couple should watch. Thank you for broadcasting it.
I miss the Phil Donahue show~!!! He still looks great. Marlo did most of the talking...wanted to hear him too.
You both look great! Congrats on a long relationship and marriage!
WoW, Marlo is 82. She's so beautiful, inside and out. He's quite amazing, too. Together they are the best there is.
It's called good lighting! ha, ha. But you're right.
Good lighting but she had “ work” done. And why not? She does look great
Marlo, I LOVED your dad; everything he did, professionally, was wonderful. AND I STILL tell my clients (therapist) about your story about "The No Friends Club" ("Free to Be You and Me"). Thank you so much for sharing your story on this interview.
Just absolutely wonderful !! Love you both !! Phillip W. Tucker
May God’s Hand of Divine Protection be upon you both !!!! Your year’s of giving through The Phil Donahue Show , and Marlo’s continued dedication to her Father’s work with The Hospital , ST. Jude !!! And My recollection of yes , That Girl when I was about about 7 or 8 !! Love you all !!!! Phillip W. Tucker
Marlo - Phi, I’ve always enjoyed listening to both of you. Thank you
I enjoyed you in the hallmark movie and that girl so much.
Phil talk show was very good too. Thank you both for so much .
For St Jude many many thanks,
I raised my two sons in the 1970's on the "Free to be You and Me." movement. I wanted them to have this in their repertoire. I love that Phil thinks so much of Marlowe and her feelings and thoughts.
I used to watch his show and would debate the people on there all the time, but through the tv 😂 I LOVED it and it really educated me in so many things. And Ms Thomas, oh. just recently looking at what she's done, in her OWN accord, not to mention carrying on her father's legacy, with St Jude's.. she's just FABULOUS. How i love her ❤
True Love Ages Well !!!
wow this was so very informational. I love when Marlo said this is not a "how to" or 'tip' book but it seems to me it's experiential ... couples sharing their experiences and how they each keep and work on their marriage. Thanks to Phil and Marlo and the interviewer & the questions asked. Great job for allowing them to speak without cutting them off at the pass.
Glad to hear from them both. Marlo is a story teller, that's her gift. Phil seems Ok with her chatting. He chatted all of his life..He has learned to share and knows when to interrupt and not to. Especially giving grace to a bold feminist partner. I think they have strong personalities and found love in the middle.
They're not just in love.
They're good friends.💏
Love you guys so much! God bless you❤️🙏
Well adjusted people!
Greetings from Florida 🌴 Seeing You both is Lighting Up My Screen with Love 💕 Thank You 4/ Sharing and still Caring💕 God 🙏 Bless !
Wonderful interview. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you both so much ❤️❤️
I remember the phone interview for macrobiotic cook I had with your mom. She said, with a gentleness I was unaccustomed to "My husband is in show business, he might come home at 3AM and want you to cook him a steak, could you do it? that gentleness, probly one reason your marrage has lasted.💋
How refreshing!
Phil has deep thoughts and processes things deeply, that always took more time. Marlo is a quick thinker. I kind of wish though, that Marlo allowed Phil to take his pauses and not fill them in. Because after he pauses, a deeper thought or question emerges from Phil. That was always his gift. He was thinking and she kind of seemed impatient waiting for him to continue. I wish she would just breathe and trust in his wisdom that emerges, after his pause. Marlo has very smart things to say also and is eager to say them.
Beautiful couple. I used to watch Phil growing up in the 80's. I love looking at the history on both of you. Sexy intelligent couple. Btw. Phill has amazing blue eyes hey Marlo?
Marlo didn't let Phil finishes his sentences. :(
Like her but she talked too much!
@@maryherren4969 100%
I agree.
I think he respects her so much that her let her speak full out and even interrupt. She was a prominent leader in the early women's liberation movement and P.D was all ready a true feminist when they met.@@maryherren4969
typical long-married couple where the wife does most of the talking and the husband just sits there and listens.
Marlo should allow to talk instead of constantly cutting in to him when he’s talking.
You two are true love and most of us never find that. Not with it being mutual anyway.
Thank you too.
I wish Phil had done more talking in the interview. Marlo seemed to take over.
Yes I stayed at home alot during that time like a year.
Great couple!😊
hi guys...thanks for sharing...
He talked for a living, now she constantly interrupted him!
Great couple
Good insights into what couples need to do to
obviously their biggest problem is she never lets him speak.. sheeesh!
Congrats! 🎉
They look the same, a good looking happy couple.❤
And you have to trust each other. I been married twenty -thres years now.
It was Mary Tyler-Moore who threw her hat in the air in the intro-not Marlo in That Girl….
Sure wish I could find that kind of love. He also has a daughter that at the time lived with her mother. I thought Ted Danson was only married twice.
Even in nice marriages like theirs the wife is always interrupting the husband.
Love looks like love, 👍
Peace fully wow
WOW a it’s charming to see a man wear a pink sweater. '!!!!!!
That's Phil for ya'!
The reflection of the pink makes him look healthier.
I guesstimate Phyllis lady isomers my head.
A feminist that actually looks at her husband adoringly, I mean nothing negative by this message. I only mean to say that it IS possible. Congratulations to both Marlo and Phil.
P.S...he looks at her the same way.
❤️❤️
❤❤❤
My room mate and good friend for years was Dale Unger. I do Not think they knew each other well or at all.
He was a cousin of Marlo. Danny Thomas was His mother’s brother.
Beauty from God
And plastic surgery.
They are very old people, may God save there souls before they DIE.
LOL😂
My comment had too many typos. Never mind.
What year is this? I guess overlooked it. Thank you!
👍👍👍
I agree with Phil SDonHUE bout the continual coveraGE OF D.T......N. GOUIN
Love beyond fault
OMG Phil, don't even give Trump the exposure !!
Only 83 comments?
I believe he has a daughter that lives with her mother.
Nope
@@dianehogan2471 Yes it is true.
@@lianelayman6584 No, it's not. Watch the video again. They specifically say he has four boys.
Seems there was a daughter. Wonder what happened.

Sounds like Marlo but doesn’t look like her but then again she’s in her 80s she’s not gonna look the same
She talks to loud, and too much. She treats him like he is senile! Let him speak! 😊
From what I see HE IS BECOMING SENILE and fast. Maybe it is love lol. She is wonderful for standing by him.
He could have some dementia that they are not sharing.....My husband has difficulty ( now that he has dementia)expressing what he is thinking or finding the correct words. Give her a break... Sheesh we don't know them
I liked her with donald better, lol
Donald who? The one on That Girl who was just on TV.
@@lianelayman6584 yes,lol
Ha, ha, yes.
Do you both practice your Catholic faith?
I think you know that answer.
Lucky ass

You don't have to be liberal to have hated the Iraq war. It was completely irrational. Had nothing to do with 9/11.
What I remember about it was Israel having our back. I'll never forget it.
Would like to hear him more. She takes over too much. He can t get on stage. It’s not sharing time it’s hogging time as it appears to my ears, eyes! Frustrating to view!

Wow cosmetic surgery Queen!
PHM
Obama! Another disappointment I can't watch That Girl now.😢
Sadly, I've been disappointed several times during this interview. Marlo was much more effective when politics were left out. Most all the people in the book are far left liberals. Not JFK ones. A couple of those people mentioned are putrid to me, having seen things I wished I hadn't. The division in my country, starting with Obama, really saddens me.
The Shriners have to beg for money on TV all of the time. Too bad she spent so much of her dad's money on her facial surgeries!!
Shriners & St. Jude are 2 different outfits.
What a nasty, ridiculous comment. Absolute nonsense. She's rich from all of HER work. Seriously, get a grip, Sarah.
Don't reply on how people spend there money has nothingto do with this interview Marlo and Phil are good people and they look great they had success with there lives and they deserve to celebrate fovever❤ Iowan
