To answer your question: screaming and growling vocals require very specific training so you're learning to vibrate a certain flappy thing in your throat (like vocal fry). Without this training, you are just destroying your throat like the girl in this video.

Something I learned from my emo days was that screamers actually did absolutely DESTROY their vocals chords. Most can only scream for a few years (maybe 2-3 albums) before doctors end up telling them if they scream for any longer they'll have to get surgery or stop performing all together. So most end up just switching to regular singing like Oliver Sykes, for example.
Alissa White-Gluz is an INCREDIBLY talented frontwomen in a huge European melodic Death Metal Band, Arch Enemy. She is amazing. I am so jealous of the girl that got to have her as a made coach!
I know right?? I was so freaking jealous she could meet her, I was listening to arch enemy's avalanche before an university exam and it was the first one in which I got the full score with laude (30 e lode, in italian). English literature, Shakespeare and Beowulf. I loved studying for it, so fascinating. And the music made me all pumped up while I was waiting for my turn (in Italy we have oral exams where we get asked something out of the hundreds of pages of the material and the professor tries and ask whatever he can about the whole thing, also based on how you unswear. It's like a really nerve-wracking conversation lol but it's so satisfying when you get it all right and you're actually conversating and enjoying talking about something). It's a very fond memory of mine and she was a part of that. And that girl looks like she doesn't even *know* who she's talking to lol
I lost my dad suddenly in High School too- I felt so hard for this girl talking about it- of course she was struggling f those adults calling her lazy. 💔❤️

There's actually two kinds of "screams"! One is the false chord scream (death growl) which is the one you hear most commonly and what the Made coach, Alissa, is known for. And then there's the fry scream which is higher and more shrill. Both have a similar base to the technique, but then branch off. Interestingly, the "scream" isn't much of a scream because it doesn't use the voice at all, it's actually forced air. For the false chord scream, your vocal chords and larynx stay wide open and for the fry scream, your focal chords are at rest and the air passes through a very thin gap. The way you hurt yourself is by incorporating your voice into the scream. If you can find them, check out endoscopies of metal singers while they are singing and you'll see what the vocal chords do. Also, check out Mary Zimmer of the Voice Hacks channel. She's a metal singer and goes more in depth with the differences and anatomical placement. I definitely recommend working with a coach to start so that they can help you place everything.
The false chord "scream" is more gutteral (literally), isn't it, than the others? And, contrary to popular thoughts about "metal screaming," none of the techniques use your voice at all, right? As that is how you strip your vocal chords. I wish I could tell the difference in the feeling of each one. I dont think I even know how to not use my voice...
MADE came to my high school and I auditioned. The guy kept asking me interview questions and I smoked cigarettes at the time and told him I wanted to be a soccer player to help me quit smoking. I didn't get the part and I didn't quit smoking for 10 years after. Thanks a lot MTV 🙃

One of my most treasured memories of my Grandmere (french canadian/Maine) during my high-school-horror days was when we cried together while watching the end of the opera singer episode of MADE! We were sitting next to each other in the den, and as soon as that adorable boy opened his mouth and sang - we turned to each other and laughed at one another’s tears. My Grandmere said, “dear guy!” and although we both felt silly, we were so proud of his journey and the beauty of his singing voice. I will NEVER forget that special moment with my Grandmere who was shortly thereafter very sick with Alzheimer’s. I am so proud to be named after her and to have known that there are people in this world who exude that level of kindness and beauty. I LOVE YOU!! Thanks for taking me back..
That made episode where the mom popped her head in the door and said time to go to bed in a mocking manner was flippin hilarious, especially when Jamie lost it 🤣
This series is everything and so nostalgic 🙌🏻 this series and the movies and makeup series are just amazing!! Please do MTVs…. Next, Parental Control, Room Raiders and My Super Sweet 16. All them are such dumpster fires and my 14 year old self is begging you to do these 🤣🤣
My freshman roommate was on this show; her tagline was “I’m not a quitter but I’m not going to do this anymore” and that was pretty much how she dealt with college too.
Jaime I just gotta say this. You and Nick are honestly goals! I think it’s adorable how he takes part in some of your videos and is so supportive of you!
I definitely remember this but it just makes me angry seeing that MTV facilitated (and likely encouraged) kids to trash other kids on TV. Alissa White-Gluz is still doing really well in the band Arch Enemy so props to her for being talented and kind. But I'm really disgusted by all the negativity on that show. The kids are bad enough, but the coaches? Yikes. Way to encourage kids at the most vulnerable and emotionally-trying age 🙄 PS. I adore Jaime and this not at all about her. I love that she actually brings it to light and calls it out. Cuz the me who used to watch Made and current 33 year old me are very different and it's crazy the things we accept as "normal" at a young age.
Yeah it's pretty bad. My friend was on this show and they incouraged people to say bad things about her. Also she was relentlessly bullied because of this. She has had drug issues, and I can't say for sure what it is from but MADE mtv did not help.
@@kaitiemarie9572 Oh my gosh, that's horrible! I had a feeling they encouraged people to say awful things to make the "makeover" seem more dramatic. Bullying can most definitely push someone who is already dealing with mental health issues and/or prone to addiction. Unfortunately I have loss members of my family because of drugs so my heart goes out to her, you, and everyone who cares about her.
@@kaitiemarie9572 I'm so sorry your friend experienced that. People are so awful. I'm in my 30s and I just have to wonder, was everyone just really that mean and cruel in high school and middle school in the 2000s? It makes me so sad and angry that it's hardly a unique experience to be bullied and hurt like that. I myself have dealt with mental health problems as a result of such experiences. Adults definitely encouraged this sort of behavior, imo.
I remember MTV had this series/mini series about a “fat camp” (their words not mine) over a Summer & the drama, trials and tribulations. The camp counselor was this tough very Boston dude named Tony or Mike or something like that. Kids were hiding candy, cell phones, crying over getting their hair bows thrown away because of lice, etc.
I was just thinking about MTV's early 2000's lineup (including Pimp My Ride and Trailer Fabulous) and just remembered this show. They would always show these weird and embarrassing interviews from the classmates of the person who was being "made" saying stuff about how dorky they were and could never be prom queen and at the end of the episode they always made it seem like the participant won the whole school over with their news "skills" and a makeover . It basically was like She's All That in every episode.
OMG! I love these!!! I love that you & your hubby work on them together. This series is so much better than even the movie reviews. You have found your niche. Keep up the great work!!
I LOVE Alyssa! Back then she was singing in The Agonist. She sings in Arch Enemy now and is with Doyle from The Misfits. It's so weird to see her on an MTV episode of anything. LOL!

So I am not classically trained in singing but screaming has always come naturally. From what I have gleaned; it is the same as when an opera singer belts or a gospel church singer wails. I know that when I scream- it’s the same motions as singing but I just warble my vocal chords in a specific pattern to get the desired effect. I have also been doing this for 20 + years and keep getting better. The lower jaw definitely dips a hair and widens. It is important to train properly to avoid those nodes you speak of. Corey Taylor of Slipknot has always done it right and still can. Chino Moreno of Deftones did it wrong and lost his ability to scream after a single album and tour.
A girl from my high school signed up, I didn’t know her but she was the popular, cheerleader type, and she signed up to become a boxer. It didn’t last a month! Lol they came to my high school once and came to a house party but had to leave because kids were drinking and being dumb. They ended up never showing any of the footage anywhere, because she gave up.
My parents were poor, so we didn’t have a video camera. However, I would remake Oprah episodes in our bathroom since I could do different “camera angles” by tilting the mirrors on the side by side medicine cabinets. Memories ❤️
Omg can you please makes this a mini mini series where you just review Made episodes!!! I about lost it ! This took me Waaaaaaay back to when I'd spend my summer breaks with my brothers eating whatever the hell we wanted because both parents worked!!!
My friend was on one of these shows. He was an actual musician that they hired to be in the high school band. He was like, 30. So in the title cards they called him "The Elder" or something like that. He said MTV was pretty horrible because they wouldn't let the girl they chose to make over include her disabled best friend in the band. She wasn't in the episode at all. Different time.
I can relate a little! So when I was about 19 I got through the audition process and MTV flew someone out to film me for 3 days. It's pretty interesting. They don't provide a script but they do have you repeat or adjust things you said if they're interesting. They do want drama. I ultimately didn't do it because they wanted to interview my ex and I had a young daughter that I didn't think would want to see us arguing on TV down the road. They also were implying they wanted to switch my "made" transformation idea into something else. Thanks for helping me remember that weird time. It was strange seeing how much better everyone treats you when someone with a big camera is following you too. Oh, and I invited like 3 friends to an outing to be filmed, about 15 showed up 🤣

That is awesome! I've only seen her a handful of times. Such a pretty lady and I love her music.
Right!! I was like omg is that Alissa????
She was awesome
Saw her live a few times and it was a banger. She can also sing supernice
I lost my dad suddenly in High School too- I felt so hard for this girl talking about it- of course she was struggling f those adults calling her lazy. 💔❤️
Same here, it was hard
@@ShoppingAttic Sorry for you’re loss- high school is hard enough. Sending you some love.
Jennie, Evelyn, I'm truly sorry for your losses. Heartfelt best wishes to you both.
My brother and I would watch this after school all the time, then MTVs Next would come on after which was another huge trainwreck in our lives.
Same here
Next and Date My Mom
That next show was such trash. I still watched it though. 😂
next was absolutely crazy, a show like that would NEVER be possible today
And room raiders 🤣
To this day my husband and I still say "She's not a Christiaaaaaaaan!" Trading Spouses would be a good Member That. It's not a real young person's show, but it was pretty damn funny!
Marguerite Perrin! the God Warrior...she ended up in the NY Pride Parade lol.
Lol that episode made me pee in my pants 😆
As in Wife Swap? Or were those two different shows?
Bwahahhahha!!!😂 yes
SHES DARK SIDED
Jamie! This one was had me rolling! The calls to your husband for his opinion! 🤣💀
Do MTV’s My Super Sweet 16!!! Ooh or Pimp My Ride!!! Remember how outrageous those car makeovers were?! The opening of that show was the best! When we was just shredding the cars and making fun.. classic.
Don’t forget “Next!”
And "Date My Mom" 🤣
Wow. Those were the days, huh?
That was so much great info, Cheers thanks
@@erinwasson78 It really is! It's amazing all of the sounds people have figured out how to make!
@@MrAdryan1603 No problem! :)
This is fascinating!
F-uncomfortable is how I feel when I watch the office. Also I wish this was longer, I needed more of you and your input on things I’ve never ever watched in my life as an Aussie.
There was one episode of made where the kid wanted to become a singer or rockstar or something and their coach was the lead singer of this band no one had ever heard of called Majorette… and I fell so in love with that band and listened to them on repeat on MySpace all day and night. And now, they’ve been completely scrubbed from the internet there is no trace of their hit song “Bombilla” and I’m so distraught. If anyone finds this song ever, on any platform, Just throw me a line please 😭
It seems to be on Amazon Music and Shazam?
The metal parents have me HEAVING LAUGHING 😆😆😆
I enjoy Jamie’s clips of her childhood parodies doing these shows 😂😂
RIP to Danielle who passed away a few years ago. I loved her episode so much.
Oh no. ):
How sad what happened?
@@screamingtenderness I'm not sure of how she died, but her episode of Made is up on RUclips. All you have to is search MTV Made and her episode is one ofthe first to pop up, it was posted by her sister who says she posted it in memory of Danielle, who passed away in 2018, I believe.
@@avataranime101 she had a surgery and sadly became addicted to pain pills
OMG I remember her 😭 she was also in Fat Camp, right?!
The Superbad “that’s a cool story” cut in had me crying 😹😹😹
I've struggled with depression much of my pre teen and teen years and even adulthood and yes people thought I was "lazy" luckily my mom struggled with the same stuff and she always supported me ❤
If you ever do one on Next or My Own (both MTV shows lol) and want some questions answered, I’ve been on both haha. First season of Next (I told them I wanted to bring my dog and they were like aight. He pissed on the bus LOL) and then I won my episode of My Own. Bahahah. I have both on vhs somewhere
Wasn’t My Own that show with people trying to impersonate celebs? 😂😂
It felt like a fever dream
I LOVE the husb-cameos.
"No" *hangs phone up, walks out of frame*
Jamie is the only RUclipsr that I don't skip over her sponsored segments because they are hilarious.💛
Literally same, it’s like it’s on little video with characters I didn’t know I needed in my life.
"TIME TO GO TO BED!!!" Omg I'm dying
Oh my god the mom going "TIME TO GO TO BEEEEDDD!!" I'm freaking wheezing 🤣🤣
I love this new series Jaime! So nostalgic. Your ads also make me and my partner laugh out loud.
Those parents are amazing!! I'm an SLP and I've heard about other SLPs whose job is working strictly with metal singers to help support their vocal folds! Crazy!
My stomach hurt so bad from all the laughing with this episode I just can’t 😂 😭
Oh we *WOULD* get along! 😂 oh the hours of home-filmed news segments, reality shows, movie trailers and music videos my sisters and I made as kids!
Thank you for sharing this moment ❤ it was beautiful to read
That made episode where the mom popped her head in the door and said time to go to bed in a mocking manner was flippin hilarious, especially when Jamie lost it 🤣
Jamie: "Bill, can you pass me the shrimp fried rice"
Me: * laughs with a snort, fart combo *
I know everyone always comments on the sponsorship spots, but I’m telling you, the sponsors should automatically pay you double! Amazing!
That's Alissa white from the antagonist but currently in arch enemy..she is awesome!!
The moms head bobbing around when she did the “TIME TO GO TO BED” has me in tears. I’ve watched it like 4 times already.
That screamo episode was so amazing. Her parents 🥺😂🥰💕
This series is everything and so nostalgic 🙌🏻 this series and the movies and makeup series are just amazing!! Please do MTVs…. Next, Parental Control, Room Raiders and My Super Sweet 16. All them are such dumpster fires and my 14 year old self is begging you to do these 🤣🤣
I would also suggest Scarred, but that one is definitely not for people who can't stand seeing injuries, so I would unsderstand if Jaime refuses lol.
I second Room Raiders that was a dumpster fire for sure
All of thissss
Room raiders you unlocked a memory with that
Oh my goodness, I got chills hearing you sing "bring me to life". Amy Lee would be proud!!!!!
**hangs up the landline** Jaime, my therapist says you're giving me flashbacks to my deep-seated insecurities developed during the early 2000s.
This totally had me crying my eyes out. I hated high school and so much pushed down emotions came up from this. People are so mean.
My freshman roommate was on this show; her tagline was “I’m not a quitter but I’m not going to do this anymore” and that was pretty much how she dealt with college too.
I always dreamed of being MADE into a rockstar where they could change my voice lol. This peaked my senior year, just like me!
You really have a beautiful voice Jamie. Love hearing you sing randomly in your videos. Do more of these MTV throwback shows please! 💞
Omfg no wonder our generation is fucked. I remember watching this at the most formative years in my life *facepalm*
Jaime I just gotta say this. You and Nick are honestly goals! I think it’s adorable how he takes part in some of your videos and is so supportive of you!
Can we just talk about how beautiful Jamie's hair looks
First thought upon seeing her
I definitely remember this but it just makes me angry seeing that MTV facilitated (and likely encouraged) kids to trash other kids on TV. Alissa White-Gluz is still doing really well in the band Arch Enemy so props to her for being talented and kind. But I'm really disgusted by all the negativity on that show. The kids are bad enough, but the coaches? Yikes. Way to encourage kids at the most vulnerable and emotionally-trying age 🙄
PS.
You can find it on RUclips. I’m not kidding when I say I listen to it many times a week, just running around the house doing laundry and stuff😂
Also, I love this style of video where we get your initial reactions to things. Do more of these "unprepared" videos, please! 😂😂
When her mom yells, "TiMe tO go To bEd!" I had to pause the video and collect myself 😂😂
I love how Jamie always makes a new funny commercial for her ads!
Idk why you dont have like 10 million subscribers lol love the creativity you put into your work jamie, love love love!
OMG! I love these!!! I love that you & your hubby work on them together. This series is so much better than even the movie reviews. You have found your niche. Keep up the great work!!
As a metal head, the metal girl’s episode was amazing. I love her so much. Absolutely precious, and I’m so glad she got her wish 🖤🖤
Ok can I just say that I actually love your sponsored ads. They’re hilarious and my soul needed those laughs. 🤗
I LOVE Alyssa! Back then she was singing in The Agonist. She sings in Arch Enemy now and is with Doyle from The Misfits. It's so weird to see her on an MTV episode of anything. LOL!
Such an amazing power couple! I freakin love them.
I remember watching that episode and almost passing out seeing her on MTV.
I had never seen it before so yesterday was a surprise! Haha
the screamer episode was so wholesome, we can see how awesome you could be when you have great mentor(s) and supportive parents with sufficient sense of humor 💕
the metal part is HILARIOUS. I love death metal music and I laughed my ass off the entire time! that mom is amazing too. I LOVE this series! talk about a trip down memory lane of my teenaged years. uhhh, also. YOUR VOICE IS AMAZING. I replayed your evanescence part so many times. so, so good!
I had to double check but that Made coach is in the band Arch Enemy now 🤘🤘
So I am not classically trained in singing but screaming has always come naturally.
My parents were poor, so we
didn’t have a video camera. However, I would remake Oprah episodes in our bathroom since I could do different “camera angles” by tilting the mirrors on the side by side medicine cabinets.
Memories ❤️
when you did the last episode on "Becoming" my head immediately went to "Made", I loved this show as a kid. I hope Julia sees this video, she was dope
Same. I was hoping she'd do Made!!
Omg I needed this today! Just put my doggie to sleep on Thursday. Need any kind of distractions rn!
Sending you big hugs and the best vibes 😔❤️
Jamie: MADE was strange!
MTV's My Own: Really?
Paris Hilton's MY new BFF series: I know right!
I loved the Paris show hahahaha.
Holy crap I totally forgot about that Paris show!
I wonder what happened to her new bff. 🤔
@@HunterWoodlawn yup, that was a huge guilty pleasure😎

Alissa White-Gluz was such a huge inspiration for me. Loved her music and her appearance.
Oh, and I invited like 3 friends to an outing to be filmed, about 15 showed up 🤣
14:35 *Jaime:* "You know who she looks exactly like?"
*Me:* "Danny Gonzalez?"
*Jaime:* "The girl who plays the daughter in _What Women Want_ ."
*Me:* "Oh... Her, too."
I agree, she does sorta resemble Drew Gooden. 🤣
Crying laughing at this 🤣 you should 'member Next. That show was iconic for the time
