  • These are the 10 cherry tomato varieties I grew this year. I like to try new varieties every year but I also have a couple favs that I grow every year. This year's varieties include green grape, blush cherry, blue gold berries, sungold, barry's crazy cherry, indigo cherry drop, brad's atomic grape, amy's sugar gem, pink bumblebee and Hahm's Gelb Topftomate.

    I think the Brad's Atomic Grape was over ripe and It was not blossom end rot? I saw another youtuber say if he didn't pick them on time that would happen.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  Год назад

      Not sure about that. They seemed to start getting blossom end rot pretty early on before they were full size and just got worse as they got bigger.

      @@gapey Thanks for the reply, I have some atomic grape started, they look wimpy in comparison to the atomic fusion. The atomic fusion are growing faster and look more vigorous. I hope I get to taste some soon. They sure did a good job promoting it as their number one seller on Bakers Creek website. I just started some Honey Bee cherry from Park Seed and one called Esterina. However, we have a problem with Tomato Yellow Leaf Curl Virus on Hawaii, so I can only grow resistant varieties or graft them on resistant root stock. I feel like the virus was created to prevent us from growing heirlooms. The virus stunts the tomato plant, but if it can flower and set fruit, the fruits have a chance making it to maturity, so its not a total loss, at least I get to taste them.

      @@mangofever4681 oh no that's a bummer. The only disease I've had to deal with on tomatoes is late blight which happens every year at the end of the season. Some people also get early blight also but I've been lucky to not have to deal with that one yet. Haven't tried those other varieties you mentioned.

    I really enjoy your tomato vids! I do about 50 or 60 mater plants every summer. I noticed you have grown a bunch of my favorites. I love Sun Sugar, Sun Gold, Black Cherry, Rapunzel is my favorite red cherry. For larger maters I love Chocolate Stripes, Black Krim, Cherokee Purple, Pink and Red Brandywine, Black Prince, to name a few! Have a great summer and happy gardening!

      I've never heard of rapunzel. I'm always looking for new cherry tomato varieties to try. Let me know if you'd be interested in a seed swap. :)

      @@gapey Rapunzel has long fruit sets and super sweet red maters about the size of a seedless grape. They are very crack resistant and have great shelf life. It is a hybrid so I don't think its seeds will be true to the mother. I found the plants a few years ago at a local nursery. I absolutely loved them. I found them again this summer at a different nursery. They look identical to the ones i loved...the first red ones are setting on now! There are very few vids of them, I might have to do one...LOL! You will love them, i promise!

      i just googled them, the seeds are available at a bunch of different places....best of luck! Got a "must try" for me?

      @@kjsinsaino hah ok I'll have to keep an eye out for them. Juliet is another one people rave about that I think is a hybrid and need to try.

    Why didn’t you taste them ? I would have loved a taste comparison.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  4 года назад

      Tomatoes pretty much all taste the same with different levels of sweetness so figured it would be boring to watch me eat a tomato and say yep it's sweet or this one is sweeter or this one is not as sweet. I can't think of any other words to describe the taste of a tomato. The flavor profiles don't really change that much between them like say fig varieties or even peppers.

      Gapeys Grub I think we will have to disagree here. I want to know which tomatoes have a superior tastes before I grow them in my garden.

    Can someone tell me if yellow Sun sweet tomatoes are the same as Sun gold or sun sugar but has a different names in stores?
    I bought some at a nursery that had the name (yellow Sun sweet or sweet sun.....and wondering if it was a mistake because when I look up the name sun sweets.....it takes me to sun gold....and it looks much like the last one you showed us. It's a vary small plant and it's taken longer to grow....but now has fruit setting and it's only about 8inc tall

      I've never heard of that variety and google comes up with no results so not sure.

    Great looking tomatoes. The key for me is the tenderness of the skin. I hate to eat a cherry tomato and have to spit out what is essentially a piece of plastic. Of all the cherries you featured, which one would you say has the most tender skin? I am hoping either the Sun Gold or Crazy Cherry.

    • @gapey
      @gapey  6 лет назад +3

      You don't want to grow the amy's sugar gem then. That one had the thickest skin. The sun gold and crazy cherry both have pretty thin skin.

    Awesome! I was expecting this video, haha. They all look so nice! You always say something about the sungold being your favorite, I actually bought some orange cherry tomatoes some time ago but here they do not say the type on the package, just the commercial name, so I might eat a sungold and never know! 😢🙃
