This is one of the BEST things i've ever seen on RUclips. I won't even explain. Anybody into film, into Garbo, into Mercouri, into real characters & personalities, will love this clip. Thanks for posting!
So beautiful and moving. Melina Mercouri was such a wonderful, passionate actress and personality and she always said that her ideal was Garbo. Garbo, her magic, her genious, her beauty. I worship Garbo too and I can totally see and understand Melina's feelings. Thank you for posting this.
I LOVE BOTH OF THEM - THIS CLIP IS A JOY FOR ME - I TRULY HOPE BOTH OF THEM ARE RESTING IN PEACE WITH THE LORD AS THEY GAVE SO MUCH HAPPINESS IN THEIR BRILLIANCE !
I've seen movies with Garbo she was stunning in Camille. But she must have been something in person because this isn't the first actress who claimed Garbo made her weak in the knees, lol.
Garbo's great love affair was with John Gilbert and may have worked had he not been an alcoholic. You can actually see their love affair in the silent films they made together, especially "Flesh and the Devil". She had many women friends, but there was never any substantial evidence of a romantic relationship outside of a friendship. Mercedes de Acosta indicated such but she was known in Hollywood by every major Actress to stay away from her because she was desperate for a relationship with a well know Hollywood beauty. She tried with many but failed with all including Marlene Dietrich. Garbo had 5 major relationships and all were with men (Leopold Stokowski included). She would have probably married John Gilbert (and she almost did on 2 occasions but failed to show up at the Ceremony) had he put more into the relationship than was the case. Garbo was certainly perceptive enough to know she could not live her life with an Alcoholic. To many from the early days most notably Adela Rogers St. Johns,, the movie "A Star Is Born" is based on their relationship.
@@sshowgirl933 Marlene Dietrich was married only once and stayed married to the same man until their deaths. She had one daughter Maria Riva; It is no doubt she had many affairs over the years, but she did remain constant in marriage to the one man she married. The rest is conjuncture.
Every major Actress from the early period certainly through the Studio System into the 1950's and beyond always cite Greta Garbo as being really above reproach and in a category all her own. There were really no comparisons. Many stars were touted as the New Garbo, but it was not true and just a publicity stunt. I don't know if there are words to describe fully how everyone from Katherine Hepburn, Bette Davis, Joan Crawford and many others to have made such similar positive comments about Greta Garbo. And it wasn't something simply to say in an interview, as they truly meant the appreciation for Greta Garbo and the impact she had on them both in personal settings and on the Silver Screen.. Marlene Dietrich said there was just no one to compare with Greta Garbo. Orson Welles and George Cukor made similar positive comments regarding Garbo. The comments were never negative but rather an awe they had when meeting Garbo, working with her in the movies or simply seeing her movies. There was truly no one to compare with Greta Garbo. And if anyone was put in a spot during an interview and Garbo's name came up, they quickly made it clear that Garbo was in a class totally by herself and oftentimes their favorite Actress such as Mercouri indicates in this interview. And that remained the case until Garbo's death on Easter Sunday, April 15, 1990. Greta Garbo was truly the most unique and memorable talent ever to come out of Hollywood.
@@XX-gy7ue Garbo died on April 15, 1990, which was also Easter Sunday of 1990. New York City, I assume had been a good place to live for the last half of her life. It always was a mystery to me though that she chose New York when she could have lived anywhere in the World. Since that time 9/11 happened and now the Wuhan Virus has taken over the City, or at least parts of it. I am sorry Garbo is not alive any longer (I doubt she would have lived until now), but glad she was able to enjoy New York City before all the problems that have occurred since 1990. I wonder had she lived if she would have moved back to Sweden? She had a home there one time, and whether it was still in her Estate (as were the properties on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills) at the time of her death is not known to me.
@@richardmcleod5967 , SHE DIED EASTER SUNDAY MORNING BECAUSE SHE IS A SAINT ! if you visited 450 east 52nd street ( and you should ) you'd still see her imprint there after 30 years , there will never be another !
@@XX-gy7ue Yes, that was her address. Are you able to visit the address, at least by visiting the outside of the building? I remember residents of the building were interviewed outside at the time of her death as they came and went from the Building. Rex Harrison was living there also at the time and was interviewed and discussed about how sad her death was to so many people. That was on the news reporting at the time.
Lovely. Beauty? I walked into a candy store in the old city in Barcelona, and saw a girl working there that made Gena Davis (back then in Tootsie) look like chopped liver. Funny thing as you get older...beauty continues to become more profound...more moving. I'm 59 years and living in san francisco....once a week my bud and I go to North Beach to sit outside and girl watch.

Oh dear , Melina was a far better actress than Greta Garbo , and clearly far more intelligent too. Greta Garbo had this air of mystique about her because she had little if anything to say . She was told by the studio bosses to keep her mouth shut when off the screen . I wonder why , too dumb maybe . I did not think she was particularly beautiful , she was average actually, and as an actress ,... Garbo is also grossly overrated . Miss Mercouri is being far too kind here , but then she is a gracious lady , unlike Garbo who was silently and frequently rude to people , even in the privacy of peoples homes .
a great woman talking about another great one, greta garbo is one of my favorite actresses and I love Melina very much

I don't know what the dynamics are, but Garbo had the look and moves, independence, intelligence, and an eye for great art.
I love her and how she talk and laugh 2:15😻💕
Joan Crawford expressed almost the exact feelings after meeting Garbo for the first time back in their MGM days lol Im sure there were many more ;)

Androgenous NOT transgender. Creative people seem to have that quality. It doesn't even mean you are necessarily monogender sexually.
