Great video, haven’t laughed so much in years. I’m old enough to remember using Leica cameras professionally in the 1970s. Nobody seems to remember having to constantly recalibrate the rangefinders every six months or so. That’s why SLR cameras became the norm for professional photographers. Please tell me that they have improved since then.

Leica cameras have to be so expensive, because if they weren't, nobody would want one. The price is the feature that makes them desirable.

My favorite camera was an Argus C3, 35mm. After many Nikons and others, I came to the Lumix LX100 with a Leica lens. From first moment I put my hands on it, felt the dials, I was back home on the Argus. The shots are just fine for me and at the super value of being essentially a Leica D-Lux, interiorly, I'm happy as can be with the camera and it's lens. Smart video on this subject. Thumbs up! 1.4k

I sold Leica Cameras in the Eighties .They are beautifully finished and built . Seriously . The Lenses are second to none ..35mm Bodys are cheap to find these days but the lenses are sooo expensive . I ended up building up a Nikon system instead .Then again ...if i was a Dentist...........

My main camera is a M2 but I have to agree with you in every way. Leica failed dramatically with M5 and decided to be a luxury camera manufacturer to avoid direct competition from the Japanese manufacturers. It's a business strategy they had to choose because they are NOT AS GOOD as say Canon or Nikon. Even optic wise Canon is the leader in consumer market. I chose M2 partially because it represents a part of history where Leica was passionate about innovation and leading the industry with no compromise in quality. Even with inflation counted, it would cost roughly 3000 dollars today (200-300 USD back in 60s), that was decent price for a camera with innovation back then, not 8000 USD with Hermes or stuff lol

I owned several Leicas in the past. It only make sense in the film age with the outstanding image quality, fidelity, micro contrast and bokah, but now in the digital age, the prices and lack of ingenuity, they have lost the minds.

Leica cameras are the answer to the question; What would a camera made by Apple look like today? I get that Leica has some great lenses, but the high costs for the small bump in overall picture quality compared to the competition just isn't worth it IMO. Also, you are a true man of silliness! Yes, the difference being that the Apple camera would outperform the competition in addition to being much more aesthetically pleasing. Just look what they did with smartphones, not to mention the entire "silicon" line of computers.

My father bought a Canon IVSB in 1956 and it was pretty much an exact replica of the Lieca. A few years later, dad bought a house. So glad dad bought the Canon, otherwise I may not be here today.
Was watching DJI Mavic drone videos and this popped up. Hilarious. People would love your take on drone video cameras. RUclips is so smart it knows people are not liking the Mavic 2 Pro's camera and recommended this video. Amazing.

Leicas are made by elves riding unicorns in a palace made of platinum, that's why they're so expensive. I have a Leica, but it has a black dot instead of a red one. There was no way I was going to spend all that money on a red dot. I'm not daft. Excuse me now, I have to champagne my diamond lawn.

He's right. There was a time, way back when, when I shot with a Leica M4 film camera. Pricey then but no where near than what it is today. Legendary optics, but at these prices? The new generation of Fuji, Nikon and Canon glass that's being released for high pixel sensors is impressive. Yeah, the lawyer, doctor and dentist camera.

A trip to Cuba (or some other remote or 3rd world country) with a Leica is the cheapest way for one to pretend they' re sophisticated. Dentists? They are obsessed with macro lenses.
The minimalistic look (a bare minimun of buttons and dials), the build quality and the optics. These are the only three things I can see Leica has that my own cameras lack. (I have a Canon 6D and a Fuji X100F myself, btw).

The curiosity of the human . If something is rare , expensive or unobtainable we want it . As this increases as does our desire to own it. If leica release tomorrow their new lense will cost 100 thousand dollars but only 5 will be made , they will all be sold .
That PanaLeica 25mm f/1.4 is a fantastic lens. Besides from the 12-40mm it's the one I use the most. If you have Phase focusing on your m4/3 you should look into the older Zuiko 4/3 lenses. I have the 50-200 and 12-60mm and they are great. Focus for video isn't that good though but it works.
Rolex and Oakley have done something similar.
Rolex was given a watch to a newly sworn in US president for years (Eisenhower and LBJ for example), but because they were thrusting their stuff in front of famous people with press time, they saved $$$$ but could brag an endorsement.
Oakley does something similar: when I was in Afghanistan, the reps were giving away goggles to combat ops units. They were present to give sunglasses away when those Chilean miners came up from their cave in. So all the world could see.
That makes for good free marketing.

Actual fact: I live in Uberlândia, Brazil. It's a OK town, developed and relatively safe. A Leica M11 right now in Brazil costs: R$ 89,999.00 just the body + R$ 19,000.00 Summilux 35 mm lenses, that sums up to R$ 109,000.00 which it's enough to buy a full popular apartment in Uberlândia, or half of a semi luxury house. An average Brazilian makes R$ 2.400 monthly, which means that this kit costs the average person around 4 years of work, without spending a single cent into any other expenses. It's that expensive.
Can't believe you bought a Leica, you could have bought a herd of canon 6D's and rounded them into a pen using Sony A7 for that cost.....I don't know why I'm using sheep herding as an analogy, but you could have paid for a sheep with influenza to pee into a cup for that money!

Late to the party but here's the real reason - Leica pays a team of minimalist artists strip anything distracting from its logo. Same principle for those fine dining restaurants that reduce portion size so nothing can distract from the vast surface area unspoilt by food.

I started off watching your videos maybe a week ago when i was looking for info about the panasonic g80, I'm now just watching the videos for the slightly surreal feel and amazing intro songs.
I get blurry background with the wide aperture setting on my Huawei p10 plus which has 2 Leica cameras. No red dot though. I used an M2 in the sixties and it was crap despite the red dot on it
Preferred the Rolleiflex with the Schneider 2.8 lens. Way better mainly because of the larger film

Many years ago I owned a Canon EOS 5, an EOS 10 and a number of Canon lenses. At that time I knew a Leica agent who travelled the the Midlands area demonstrating Leica cameras. He had 2 x Leica SLR's and a number of lenses. My Canon system cost about £2500, his Leica system cost £15000. He explained that whereas Canon/Nikon bought optical glass at £10 per kilogram, Leica spent £100 per kilogram on their glass. We once took identical shots across a field and the far better resolution of the Leica glass was readily visible. The build quality also exceeded that of my Canon cameras and lenses. Unfortunately, someone screwed his house and stole the lot. Fortunately, it was owned by Leica and was replaced immediately.
Nothing to do with cameras, but my best friend from childhood is called pete draper, also from the midlands (Leicester specifically). I did wonder if you were one and the same but I'm fairly sure he isn't into cameras.
This IS among one of the reasons though. And in the digital era it is also the colour processing, even RAW. There’s just different natural colour compared to others. One of my customers did pretty much the same thing, comparing his 5Dm3 and M10. The roll-off and tones were completely different. The Canon colors felt boosted, artificial. It’s not something you would notice outside of direct comparisons, but the difference is there.
Besides that, let’s not forget Leica cameras are unique on the market. Smaller batches of a unique product vs high demand, makes a higher priced product.
Most important differentiator for me is the shutter. Leica M cameras have THE most direct and silent shutters out there. It’s instant and stable, no squish nor delay. Really a great pure photographic tool.

To answer your question, the reason people buy Leicas is because it teaches you to understand photography and become a better at it. I used to have an M6 and I took it on holiday with a friend to show him how to use a manual camera because all he ever shot was point and shoots, until he went to a D70. He was totally offended and completely brushed me off. A few weeks later he asked me what the Depth of Field preview button did on his Nikon D200 was for. I laughed so hard.
On a manual Leica M6 set the Aperture follow the exposure guide on the triangles. Want to change exposure? One click on the Aperture ring means one click on the shutter speed. People who never shot on a manual don't know this.

The photographic experience with a M10, all manual, no AF lenses, no zoom lenses, is phenomenal-orgasmic 🤪🙌. Must try it with the Summicron-M 50mm on it.
I bought a Leica M7 recently. I got it for really cheap (in terms of "cheap" for Leica) and I absolutely love it. I've never received so much attention from dudes over the age of 50 in my life. It's great!
